Flux and symmetry effects on quantum tunneling

Motivated by the analysis of the tunneling effect for the magnetic Laplacian, we introduce an abstract framework for the spectral reduction of a self-adjoint operator to a hermitian matrix. We illustrate this framework by three applications, firstly the electro-magnetic Laplacian with constant magnetic field and three equidistant potential wells, secondly a pure constant magnetic field and Neumann boundary condition in a smoothed triangle, and thirdly a magnetic step where the discontinuity line is a smoothed triangle. Flux effects are visible in the three aforementioned settings through the occurrence of eigenvalue crossings. Moreover, in the electro-magnetic Laplacian setting with double well radial potential, we rule out an artificial condition on the distance of the wells and extend the range of validity for a recently established tunneling approximation, thereby settling the problem of electro-magnetic tunneling under constant magnetic field and a sum of translated radial electric potentials.

Computing nodal deficiency with a refined Dirichlet-to-Neumann map

Recent work of the authors and their collaborators has uncovered fundamental connections between the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, the spectral flow of a certain family of self-adjoint operators, and the nodal deficiency of a Laplacian eigenfunction (or an analogous deficiency associated to a non-bipartite equipartition). Using a refined construction of the Dirichlet-to-Neumann map, we strengthen all of these results, in particular getting improved bounds on the nodal deficiency of degenerate eigenfunctions. Our framework is very general, allowing for non-bipartite partitions, non-simple eigenvalues, and non-smooth nodal sets. Consequently, the results can be used in the general study of spectral minimal partitions, not just nodal partitions of generic Laplacian eigenfunctions.

Spectral flow for pair compatible equipartitions

We show that a recent spectral flow approach proposed by Berkolaiko-Cox-Marzuola for analyzing the nodal deficiency of the nodal partition associated to an eigenfunction can be extended to more general partitions. To be more precise, we work with spectral equipartitions that satisfy a pair compatible condition. Nodal partitions and spectral minimal partitions are examples of such partitions. Along the way, we discuss different approaches to the Dirichlet-to-Neumann operators: via Aharonov-Bohm operators, via a double covering argument, and via a slitting of the domain.

On the semi-classical analysis of the groundstate energy of the Dirichlet Pauli operator in non-simply connected domains

We consider the Dirichlet Pauli operator in bounded connected domains in the plane, with a semi-classical parameter. We show, in particular, that the ground state energy of this Pauli operator will be exponentially small as the semi-classical parameter tends to zero and estimate this decay rate. This extends our results, discussing the results of a recent paper by Ekholm--Kovařík--Portmann, to include also non-simply connected domains.

On the semi-classical analysis of the groundstate energy of the Dirichlet Pauli operator

We discuss the results of a recent paper by Ekholm, Kovařík and Portmann in connection with a question of C. Guillarmou about the semiclassical expansion of the lowest eigenvalue of the Pauli operator with Dirichlet conditions. We exhibit connections with the properties of the torsion function in mechanics, the exit time of a Brownian motion and the analysis of the low eigenvalues of some Witten Laplacian.

On nodal domains in Euclidean balls

Å. Pleijel (1956) has proved that in the case of the Laplacian with Dirichlet condition, the equality in the Courant nodal theorem (Courant sharp situation) can only be true for a finite number of eigenvalues when the dimension is $\geq 2$. Recently Polterovich extended the result to the Neumann problem in two dimensions in the case when the boundary is piecewise analytic. A question coming from the theory of spectral minimal partitions has motivated the analysis of the cases when one has equality in Courant's theorem. In this note, we identify the Courant sharp eigenvalues for the Dirichlet and Neumann Laplacians in balls in $\mathbb R^d$, $d\geq 2$. The result for the Dirichlet Laplacian in the disc in $\mathbb R^2$ was obtained by B. Helffer, T. Hoffmann-Ostenhof and S. Terracini.

Nodal domains in the square---the Neumann case

Å Pleijel has proved that in the case of the Laplacian on the square with Neumann condition, the equality in the Courant nodal theorem (Courant sharp situation) can only be true for a finite number of eigenvalues. We identify five Courant sharp eigenvalues for the Neumann Laplacian in the square, and prove that there are no other cases.

Clusters of eigenvalues for the magnetic Laplacian with Robin condition

We study the Schrödinger operator with a constant magnetic field in the exterior of a compact domain in euclidean space. Functions in the domain of the operator are subject to a boundary condition of the third type (a magnetic Robin condition). In addition to the Landau levels, we obtain that the spectrum of this operator consists of clusters of eigenvalues around the Landau levels and that they do accumulate to the Landau levels from below. We give a precise asymptotic formula for the rate of accumulation of eigenvalues in these clusters, which is independent of the boundary condition.

Lack of diamagnetism and the Little-Parks effect

When a superconducting sample is submitted to a sufficiently strong external magnetic field, the superconductivity of the material is lost. In this paper we prove that this effect does not, in general, take place at a unique value of the external magnetic field strength. Indeed, for a sample in the shape of a narrow annulus the set of magnetic field strengths for which the sample is superconducting is not an interval. This is a rigorous justification of the Little-Parks effect. We also show that the same oscillation effect can happen for disc-shaped samples if the external magnetic field is non-uniform. In this case the oscillations can even occur repeatedly along arbitrarily large values of the Ginzburg--Landau parameter $κ$. The analysis is based on an understanding of the underlying spectral theory for a magnetic Schrödinger operator. It is shown that the ground state energy of such an operator is not in general a monotone function of the intensity of the field, even in the limit of strong fields.

A uniqueness theorem for higher order anharmonic oscillators

We study for $α\in\R$, $k \in {\mathbb N} \setminus \{0\}$ the family of self-adjoint operators \[ -\frac{d^2}{dt^2}+\Bigl(\frac{t^{k+1}}{k+1}-α\Bigr)^2 \] in $L^2(\R)$ and show that if $k$ is even then $α=0$ gives the unique minimum of the lowest eigenvalue of this family of operators. Combined with earlier results this gives that for any $k \geq 1$, the lowest eigenvalue has a unique minimum as a function of $α$.
