Rank-two graphs whose C^*-algebras are direct limits of circle algebras

We describe a class of rank-2 graphs whose C^*-algebras are AT algebras. For a subclass which we call rank-2 Bratteli diagrams, we compute the K-theory of the C*-algebra. We identify rank-2 Bratteli diagrams whose C*-algebras are simple and have real-rank zero, and characterise the K-invariants achieved by such algebras. We give examples of rank-2 Bratteli diagrams whose C*-algebras contain as full corners the irrational rotation algebras and the Bunce-Deddens algebras.

Perturbation of Hausdorff moment sequences, and an application to the theory of C*-algebras of real rank zero

We investigate the class of unital C*-algebras that admit a unital embedding into every unital C*-algebra of real rank zero, that has no finite-dimensional quotients. We refer to a C*-algebra in this class as an initial object. We show that there are many initial objects, including for example some unital, simple, infinite-dimensional AF-algebras, the Jiang-Su algebra, and the GICAR-algebra. That the GICAR-algebra is an initial object follows from an analysis of Hausdorff moment sequences. It is shown that a dense set of Hausdorff moment sequences belong to a given dense subgroup of the real numbers, and hence that the Hausdorff moment problem can be solved (in a non-trivial way) when the moments are required to belong to an arbitrary simple dimension group (i.e., unperforated simple ordered group with the Riesz decomposition property).

The stable and the real rank of Z-absorbing C*-algebras

Suppose that A is a C*-algebra for which A is isomorphic to A tensor Z, where Z is the Jiang-Su algebra: a unital, simple, stably finite, separable, nuclear, infinite dimensional C*-algebra with the same Elliott invariant as the complex numbers. We show that: (i) The Cuntz semigroup W(A) of equivalence classes of positive elements in matrix algebras over A is weakly unperforated. (ii) If A is exact, then A is purely infinite if and only if A is traceless. (iii) If A is separable and nuclear, then A is isomorphic to A tensor O_infty if and only if A is traceless. (iv) If A is simple and unital, then the stable rank of A is one if and only if A is finite. We also characterise when A is of real rank zero.

A purely infinite AH-algebra and an application to AF-embeddability

We show that there exists a purely infinite AH-algebra. The AH-algebra arises as an inductive limit of C*-algebras of the form C_0([0,1),M_k) and it absorbs the Cuntz algebra O_\infty tensorially. Thus one can reach an O_\infty-absorbing C*-algebra as an inductive limit of the finite and elementary C*-algebras C_0([0,1),M_k). As an application we give a new proof of a recent theorem of Ozawa that the cone over any separable exact C*-algebra is AF-embeddable, and we exhibit a concrete AF-algebra into which this class of C*-algebras can be embedded.

Purely infinite C*-algebras: ideal-preserving zero homotopies

We show that if A is a separable, nuclear, O_infty-absorbing (or strongly purely infinite) C*-algebra, which is homotopic to zero in an ideal-system preserving way, then A is the inductive limit of C*-algebras of the form M_k(C_0(G,v)), where G is a finite graph (and C_0(G,v) is the algebra of continuous functions on G that vanish at a distinguished point v in G). We show further that any separable, nuclear, stable, O_2-absorbing C*-algebra is isomorphic to a crossed product of a C*-algebra D with the integers by an action alpha, where D is an inductive limit of C*-algebras of the form M_k(C_0(G,v)) (and D is O_2-absorbing and homotopic to zero in an ideal-system preserving way).

AF-embeddings into C*-algebras of real rank zero

It is proved that every separable $C^*$-algebra of real rank zero contains an AF-sub-$C^*$-algebra such that the inclusion mapping induces an isomorphism of the ideal lattices of the two $C^*$-algebras and such that every projection in a matrix algebra over the large $C^*$-algebra is equivalent to a projection in a matrix algebra over the AF-sub-$C^*$-algebra. This result is proved at the level of monoids, using that the monoid of Murray-von Neumann equivalence classes of projections in a $C^*$-algebra of real rank zero has the refinement property. As an application of our result, we show that given a unital $C^*$-algebra $A$ of real rank zero and a natural number $n$, then there is a unital $^*$-homomorphism $M_{n_1} \oplus ... \oplus M_{n_r} \to A$ for some natural numbers $r,n_1, ...,n_r$ with $n_j \ge n$ for all $j$ if and only if $A$ has no representation of dimension less than $n$.

A simple C*-algebra with a finite and an infinite projection

An example is given of a simple, unital C*-algebra which contains an infinite and a non-zero finite projection. This C*-algebra is also an example of an infinite simple C*-algebra which is not purely infinite. A corner of this C*-algebra is a finite, simple, unital C*-algebra which is not stably finite. Our example shows that the type decomposition for von Neumann factors does not carry over to simple C*-algebras. Added March 2002: We also give an example of a simple, separable, nuclear C*-algebra in the UCT class which contains an infinite and a non-zero finite projection. This nuclear C*-algebra arises as a crossed product of an inductive limit of type I C*-algebras by an action of the integers.

Projections in free product C*-algebras, II

Let (A,phi) be the reduced free product of infinitely many pairs (A_i,phi_i) of C*-algebras with faithful states. Assume that the A_i are not too small, in a specific sense. It is shown that if phi is a trace then K_0(A) is determined entirely by K_0(phi). If, furthermore, the image of K_0(phi) is dense in the reals then A has real rank zero. On the other hand, if phi is not a trace then A is simple and purely infinite.

Projections in free product C*-algebras

Consider the reduced free product of C*-algebras, (A,ϕ)=(A_1,ϕ_1)*(A_2,ϕ_2), with respect to states ϕ_1 and ϕ_2 that are faithful. If ϕ_1 and ϕ_2 are traces, if the so-called Avitzour conditions are satisfied, (i.e. A_1 and A_2 are not ``too small'' in a specific sense) and if A_1 and A_2 are nuclear, then it is shown that the positive cone of the K_0-group of A consists of those elements g in K_0(A) for which g=0 or K_0(ϕ)(g)>0. Thus, the ordered group K_0(A) is weakly unperforated. If, on the other hand, ϕ_1 or ϕ_2 is not a trace and if a certain condition weaker than the Avitzour conditions hold, then A is properly infinite.

The stable rank of some free product C*-algebras

It is proved that the reduced group C*-algebra C*_{red}(G) has stable rank one (i.e. its group of invertible elements is a dense subset) if G is a discrete group arising as a free product G_1*G_2 where |G_1|>=2 and |G_2|>=3. This follows from a more general result where it is proved that if (A,tau) is the reduced free product of a family (A_i,tau_i), i\in I, of unital C*-algebras A_i with normalized faithful traces tau_i, and if the family satisfies the Avitzour condition (i.e. the traces, tau_i, are not too lumpy in a specific sense), then A has stable rank one.

Purely infinite simple $C^*$-algebras arising from free product constructions

Examples of simple, separable, unital, purely infinite $C^*$--algebras are constructed, including: (1) some that are not approximately divisible; (2) those that arise as crossed products of any of a certain class of $C^*$--algebras by any of a certain class of non--unital endomorphisms; (3) those that arise as reduced free products of pairs of $C^*$--algebras with respect to any from a certain class of states.
