Concurrent Multifractality and Anomalous Hall Response in the Nodal Line Semimetal Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ Near Localization

Topological states of matter exhibit unique protection against scattering by disorder. Different topological classes exhibit distinct forms and degrees of protection. Here, we investigate the response of the ferromagnetic nodal line semimetal Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$ to disorder and electronic interactions. By combining global magneto-transport with atomic-scale scanning tunneling spectroscopy we find a simultaneous onset of diverse phenomena below a common temperature scale of about 15 K: A crossover from metallic to insulating temperature dependence of the longitudinal resistivity, saturation of the anomalous Hall conductivity to its maximal value, formation of a sharp zero-bias dip in the tunneling density of state, and emergence of multi-fractal structure of the electronic wavefunction peaking at the Fermi energy. These concurrent observations reflect the emergence of a novel energy scale possibly related to the opening of a gap in the nodal line band of Fe$_3$GeTe$_2$. Our study provides overarching insight into the role of disorder, electronic interactions and Berry curvature in setting the micro- and macro-scale responses of topological semimetals.

Topological semimetals without quasiparticles

The interplay between interactions and topology in quantum materials is of extensive current interest. Strong correlations are known to be important for insulating topological states, as exemplified by the fractional quantum Hall effect. For the metallic case, whether and how they can drive topological states that have no free-electron counterparts is an open and pressing question. We introduce a general framework for lattice symmetries to constrain single-particle excitations even when they are not quasiparticles, and substantiate it in a periodic Anderson model with two channels of conduction electrons. We demonstrate that symmetry constrains correlation-induced emergent excitations to produce non-Fermi liquid topological phases. The loss of quasiparticles in these phases is manifested in a non-Fermi liquid form of spectral and transport properties, whereas its topological nature is characterized by surface states and valley and spin Hall conductivities. We also identify candidate materials to realize the proposed phases. Our work opens a door to a variety of non-Fermi liquid topological phases in a broad range of strongly correlated materials.

Vectorial Bulk-Boundary Correspondence for 3D Photonic Chern Insulators

In 2D Chern insulators (2D CI), the topology of the bulk states is captured by a topological invariant, the Chern number. The scalar bulk-boundary correspondence (sBBC) relates the change in Chern number across an interface with the number of 1D chiral edge modes at the interface. However, 3D Chern insulators (3D CI) can be characterized by a Chern vector C = (Cx, Cy, Cz) and a more general vector bulk-boundary correspondence (vBBC) is needed to correctly predict the propagation of the surface modes. In this work the possible interfaces between 3D photonic CIs are explored, focusing on possible changes in Chern vector orientation. To formulate a 3D vBBC, a link is derived between the Chern vector discontinuity across an interface and the winding of the surface equifrequency loops on the boundary. Lastly, it is demonstrated how to correctly predict the number and the propagation direction of topological photonic surface modes in 3D CIs.
