Fractional quantum Hall states of atoms in optical Lattices

We describe a method to create fractional quantum Hall states of atoms confined in optical lattices. We show that the dynamics of the atoms in the lattice is analogous to the motion of a charged particle in a magnetic field if an oscillating quadrupole potential is applied together with a periodic modulation of the tunneling between lattice sites. We demonstrate that in a suitable parameter regime the ground state in the lattice is of the fractional quantum Hall type and we show how these states can be reached by melting a Mott insulator state in a super lattice potential. Finally we discuss techniques to observe these strongly correlated states.

Disordered Bose-Einstein Condensates in Quasi One-Dimensional Magnetic Microtraps

We analyze effects of a random magnetic potential in a microfabricated waveguide for ultra-cold atoms. We find that the shape and position fluctuations of a current carrying wire induce strongly disordered potential that is quasiperiodic with a lengthscale set by the atom-wire separation. The theory is used to explain quantitatively the experimentally observed fragmentation of the quasi one-dimensional Bose-Einstein condensates. Furthermore, we show that nonlinear dynamics can be used to provide important insights into the nature of the strongly fragmented condensates. We argue that a quantum phase transition from the superfluid to the insulating Bose glass phase may be reached and detected under the realistic experimental conditions.

Capacitive coupling of atomic systems to mesoscopic conductors

We describe a technique that enables a strong, coherent coupling between isolated neutral atoms and mesoscopic conductors. The coupling is achieved by exciting atoms trapped above the surface of a superconducting transmission line into Rydberg states with large electric dipole moments, that induce voltage fluctuations in the transmission line. Using a mechanism analogous to cavity quantum electrodynamics an atomic state can be transferred to a long-lived mode of the fluctuating voltage, atoms separated by millimeters can be entangled, or the quantum state of a solid state device can be mapped onto atomic or photonic states.

Phase diagram of two-component bosons on an optical lattice

We present a theoretical analysis of the phase diagram of two--component bosons on an optical lattice. A new formalism is developed which treats the effective spin interactions in the Mott and superfluid phases on the same footing. Using the new approach we chart the phase boundaries of the broken spin symmetry states up to the Mott to superfluid transition and beyond. Near the transition point, the magnitude of spin exchange can be very large, which facilitates the experimental realization of spin-ordered states. We find that spin and quantum fluctuations have a dramatic effect on the transition making it first order in extended regions of the phase diagram. For Mott states with even occupation we find that the competition between effective Heisenberg exchange and spin-dependent on--site interaction leads to an additional phase transition from a Mott insulator with no broken symmetries into a spin-ordered insulator.

Probing many-body states of ultra-cold atoms via noise correlations

We propose to utilize density-density correlations in the image of an expanding gas cloud to probe complex many body states of trapped ultra-cold atoms. In particular we show how this technique can be used to detect superfluidity of fermionic gases and reveal broken spin symmetries in Mott-states of atoms in optical lattices. The feasibility of the method is investigated by analysis of the relevant signal to noise ratio including experimental imperfections.

Ultra-Slow Light and Enhanced Nonlinear Optical Effects in a Coherently Driven Hot Atomic Gas

We report the observation of small group velocities of order 90 meters per second, and large group delays of greater than 0.26 ms, in an optically dense hot rubidium gas (~360 K). Media of this kind yield strong nonlinear interactions between very weak optical fields, and very sharp spectral features. The result is in agreement with previous studies on nonlinear spectroscopy of dense coherent media.
