Two-photon exchange correction to $2S$-$2P$ splitting in muonic helium-3 ions

We calculate the two-photon exchange correction to the Lamb shift in muonic helium-3 ions within the dispersion relations framework. Part of the effort entailed making analytic fits to the electron-$^3$He quasielastic scattering data set, for purposes of doing the dispersion integrals. Our result is that the energy of the 2$S$ state is shifted downwards by two-photon exchange effects by 15.14(49) meV, in good accord with the result obtained from a potential model and effective field theory calculation.

Hadronic weak charges and parity-violating forward Compton scattering

Parity-violating elastic electron-nucleon scattering at low momentum transfer allows one to access the nucleon's weak charge, the vector coupling of the $Z$-boson to the nucleon. In the Standard Model and at tree level, the weak charge of the proton is related to the weak mixing angle and accidentally suppressed, $Q_W^{p,\,{\rm tree}}=1-4\sin^2θ_W\approx0.07$. Modern experiments aim at extracting $Q_W^p$ at $\sim1\%$ accuracy. Similarly, parity non-conservation in atoms allows to access the weak charge of atomic nuclei. We consider a novel class of radiative corrections, an exchange of two photons with parity violation in the hadronic/nuclear system. These corrections may affect the extraction of $\sin^2θ_W$ from the experimental data at the relevant level of precision because they are affected by long-range interactions similar to other parity-violating radiative corrections, such as, e.g., the $γZ$-exchange, which has obtained much attention recently. We show that the significance of this new correction increases with the beam energy in parity-violating electron scattering, but the general properties of the parity-violating forward Compton amplitude protect the formal definition of the weak charge as a limit at zero-momentum transfer and zero-energy. We also discuss the relevance of the new correction for upcoming experiments.

New sum rule for the nuclear magnetic polarizability

I extend the well-known photonuclear sum rule that relates the strength of the photoexcitation of the giant dipole resonance in a nucleus to the number of elementary scatterers-nucleons to the case of virtual photons. The new sum rule relates the size of the magnetic polarizability of a nucleus to the slope of the transverse virtual photoabsorption cross section integrated over the energy in the nuclear range. I check this sum rule for the deuteron where necessary data is available, discuss possible applications and connection with other sum rules postulated in the literature.

How strange is pion electroproduction?

We consider pion production in parity-violating electron scattering (PVES) in the presence of nucleon strangeness in the framework of partial wave analysis with unitarity. Using the experimental bounds on the strange form factors obtained in elastic PVES, we study the sensitivity of the parity-violating asymmetry to strange nucleon form factors. For forward kinematics and electron energies above 1 GeV, we observe that this sensitivity may reach about 20\% in the threshold region. With parity-violating asymmetries being as large as tens p.p.m., this study suggests that threshold pion production in PVES can be used as a promising way to better constrain strangeness contributions. Using this model for the neutral current pion production, we update the estimate for the dispersive $γZ$-box correction to the weak charge of the proton. In the kinematics of the Qweak experiment, our new prediction reads Re$\,\Box_{γZ}^V(E=1.165\,{\rm GeV}) = (5.58\pm1.41)\times10^{-3}$, an improvement over the previous uncertainty estimate of $\pm2.0\times10^{-3}$. Our new prediction in the kinematics of the upcoming MESA/P2 experiment reads Re$\,\Box_{γZ}^V(E=0.155\,{\rm GeV}) = (1.1\pm0.2) \times 10^{-3}$.

Forward Compton Scattering with weak neutral current: constraints from sum rules

We generalize forward real Compton amplitude to the case of the interference of the electromagnetic and weak neutral current, formulate a low-energy theorem, relate the new amplitudes to the interference structure functions and obtain a new set of sum rules. We address a possible new sum rule that relates the product of the axial charge and magnetic moment of the nucleon to the 0th moment of the structure function $g_5(ν,0)$. We apply the GDH and the finite energy sum rule for constraining the dispersive $γZ$-box correction to the proton's weak charge.

Forward sum rule for the $2γ$-exchange correction to the charge radius extraction from elastic electron scattering

Two-photon exchange (TPE) contributions to elastic electron-proton scattering in the forward regime and in leading log $\sim t\ln|t|$ approximation in the momentum transfer $|t|$ are considered. The imaginary part of TPE amplitude in these kinematics is related to the total photo absorption cross section. The real part of the TPE amplitude is obtained from the imaginary part by means of a fixed-$t$ dispersion relation. The dispersion integrals for the relevant elastic $ep$-scattering amplitude converge and do not need subtraction. This allows us to make clean a prediction for the real part of the TPE amplitude at forward angles with the leading term $\sim t\ln|t|$. Numerical estimates are comparable to the experimental precision in extracting the charge radius from experimental data.

Nuclear structure contribution to the Lamb shift in muonic deuterium

We consider the two-photon exchange contribution to the $2P-2S$ Lamb shift in muonic deuterium in the framework of forward dispersion relations. The dispersion integrals are evaluated using experimental data on elastic deuteron form factors and inelastic electron-deuteron scattering, both in the quasielastic and hadronic range. The subtraction constant that is required to ensure convergence of the dispersion relation for the forward Compton amplitude $T_1(ν,Q^2)$ is related to the deuteron magnetic polarizability $β(Q^2)$. Based on phenomenological information, we obtain for the Lamb shift $ΔE_{2P-2S}=2.01\pm0.74$ meV. The main source of the uncertainty of the dispersion analysis is due to lack of quasielastic data at low energies and forward angles. We show that a targeted measurement of the deuteron electrodesintegration in the kinematics of upcoming experiments A1 and MESA at Mainz can help quenching this uncertainty significantly.

Gamma Rays from Cosmic-Ray Proton Scattering in AGN Jets: the Intra-Cluster Gas vastly outshines Dark Matter

Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) host powerful jets containing high-energy electrons and protons. The astrophysical environment where AGNs and their jets are found is characterized by large concentrations of both dark matter (DM) and intra-cluster medium (ICM) gas. As the high-energy jet particles transverse the DM and the ICM, elastic and inelastic scattering processes generically lead to the production of final-state photons. As first envisioned by Bloom and Wells (1998), and as more recently pointed out by us and others, the scattering of electrons off of DM could lead to a potentially detectable gamma-ray signal, with the parton-level contribution from protons offering dimmer perspectives. Recently, Chang et al. argued that taking into account photons from hadronization and showering, the actual photon flux is substantially increased. Here, we point out that the proton-jets have to be highly collimated, contrary to what predicted by simple blob-geometry jet-models sometimes employed in these studies, otherwise they would produce a very large flux of photons from inelastic collisions with ICM nucleons, which would outshine by many orders of magnitude the signal from DM, for almost any reasonable ICM and DM density profiles.

$μ-H$ Lamb shift: dispersing the nucleon-excitation uncertainty with a finite energy sum rule

We assess the two-photon exchange contribution to the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen with forward dispersion relations. The subtraction constant $\bar T(0,Q^2)$ that is necessary for a dispersive evaluation of the forward doubly-virtual Compton amplitude, through a finite energy sum rule, is related to the fixed J=0 pole generalized to the case of virtual photons. We evaluated this sum rule using excellent virtual photoabsorption data that are available. We find that the "proton polarizability correction" to the Lamb shift in muonic hydrogen is $-(40\pm5)μ$eV. We conclude that nucleon structure-dependent uncertainty by itself is unlikely to resolve the large (300$μ$eV) discrepancy between direct measurement of the Lamb shift in $μH$ and expectations based on conventional Hydrogen measurements.

Compton Scattering and Photo-absorption Sum Rules on Nuclei

We revisit the photo-absorption sum rule for real Compton scattering from the proton and from nuclear targets. In analogy with the Thomas-Reiche-Kuhn sum rule appropriate at low energies, we propose a new "constituent quark model" sum rule that relates the integrated strength of hadronic resonances to the scattering amplitude on constituent quarks. We study the constituent quark model sum rule for several nuclear targets. In addition we extract the $α=0$ pole contribution for both proton and nuclei. Using the modern high energy proton data we find that the $α=0$ pole contribution differs significantly from the Thomson term, in contrast with the original findings by Damashek and Gilman.

Asymptotic behavior of pion form factors

We consider the electromagnetic and transition pion form factors. Using dispersion relations we simultaneously describe both the hadronic, time-like region and the asymptotic region of large energy-momentum transfer. For the latter we propose a novel mechanism of Regge fermion exchange.

Model-dependence of the $γZ$ dispersion correction to the parity-violating asymmetry in elastic $ep$ scattering

We analyze the dispersion correction to elastic parity violating electron-proton scattering due to $γZ$ exchange. In particular, we explore the theoretical uncertainties associated with modeling contributions of hadronic intermediate states. Taking into account constraints from low- and high-energy, parity-conserving electroproduction measurements, choosing different models for contributions from the non-resonant processes, and performing the corresponding flavor rotations to obtain the electroweak amplitude, we arrive at an estimate of the uncertainty in the total contribution to the parity-violating asymmetry. At the kinematics of the Q-Weak experiment, we obtain a correction to the asymmetry equivalent to a shift in the proton weak charge of $(0.0054\pm0.0020)$. This should be compared to the value of the proton's weak charge of $\qwp=0.0713\pm0.0008$ that includes SM contributions at tree level and one-loop radiative corrections. Therefore, we obtain a new Standard Model prediction for the parity-violating asymmetry in the kinematics of the Q-Weak experiment of $(0.0767\pm0.0008\pm0.0020_{γZ})$. The latter error leads to a relative uncertainty of 2.8% in the determination of the proton's weak charge, and is dominated by the uncertainty in the isospin structure of the inclusive cross section. We argue that future parity-violating inelastic $ep$ asymmetry measurements at low-to-moderate $Q^2$ and $W^2$ could be exploited to reduce the uncertainty associated with the dispersion correction. Because the corresponding shift and error bar decrease monotonically with decreasing beam energy, a determination of the proton's weak charge with a lower-energy experiment or measurements of "isotope ratios" in atomic parity-violation could provide a useful cross check on any implications for physics beyond the Standard Model derived from the Q-Weak measurement.

Pion form factors

We consider the electromagnetic and transition pion form factors. Using dispersion relations we simultaneously describe both the hadronic, time-like region and the asymptotic region of large energy-momentum transfer. For the latter we propose a novel mechanism of Regge fermion exchange. We find that hadronic contributions dominate form factors at all currently available energies.

Probing Dark Matter with AGN Jets

We study the possibility of detecting a signature of particle dark matter in the spectrum of gamma-ray photons from active galactic nuclei (AGNs) resulting from the scattering of high-energy particles in the AGN jet off of dark matter particles. We consider particle dark matter models in the context of both supersymmetry and universal extra-dimensions (UED), and we present the complete lowest-order calculation for processes where a photon is emitted in dark matter-electron and/or dark matter-proton scattering, where electrons and protons belong to the AGN jet. We find that the process is dominated by a resonance whose energy is dictated by the particle spectrum in the dark matter sector (neutralino and selectron for the case of supersymmetry, Kaluza-Klein photon and electron for UED). The resulting gamma-ray spectrum exhibits a very characteristic spectral feature, consisting of a sharp break to a hard power-law behavior. Although the normalization of the gamma-ray flux depends strongly on assumptions on both the AGN jet geometry, composition and particle spectrum as well as on the particle dark matter model and density distribution, we show that for realistic parameters choices, and for two prominent nearby AGNs (Centaurus A and M87), the detection of this effect is in principle possible. Finally, we compare our predictions and results with recent gamma-ray observations from the Fermi, H.E.S.S. and VERITAS telescopes.

New approach to low energy Virtual Compton Scattering and generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon

Virtual Compton scattering off the nucleon (VCS) is studied in the regime of low energy of the outgoing real photon. This regime allows one to directly access the generalized polarizabilities of the nucleon in a VCS experiment. In the derivation of the low energy theorem for VCS that exists in the literature, the low energy limit taken for virtual initial photons does not match on that for real photons, when one approaches the initial photon's mass shell. While this problem has for a long time been attributed to the non-analyticity of the Compton amplitude with respect to the photon virtuality, I demonstrate that it is merely due to an ill-defined low energy limit for VCS, on one hand, and to a particular way of constructing the VCS amplitude, use in the literature, on the other. I provide a uniform description of low energy Compton scattering with real and virtual photons by defining a Lorentz-covariant operator sub-basis for Compton scattering in that regime, that has six independent structures. Correspondingly, six new generalized polarizabilities are introduced in the Breit frame. These polarizabilities are defined as continuous functions of the photon virtuality and at the real photon point match onto the nucleon polarizabilities known from real Compton scattering.

Nucleon EDM and rare decays of eta mesons

I consider rare CP-violating decay modes $η(η')\toππ$ and note that an interaction that leads to such decays would necessarily induce a nucleon electric dipole moment (EDM). The experimental limits for the corresponding branching ratios are quite soft. I relate these decay branching ratios to the value of the induced nucleon EDM and translate the experimental limits on the neutron EDM into much more stringent constraints on these decay rates: $\frac{Γ_{η\toππ}}{Γ_η}\lesssim3.5\times10^{-14}$ and $\frac{Γ_{η'\toππ}}{Γ_η'}\lesssim1.8\times10^{-17}$.

CP-violation in Compton scattering

I consider Compton scattering off the nucleon in the presence of $CP$ violation. I construct the Compton tensor which possesses these features and consider low energy expansion (LEX) of the corresponding amplitudes. It allows to separate out the Born contribution which only depends on the static properties of the nucleon, such as the electric charge, the mass, the magnetic moment, and the electric dipole moment (EDM). I introduce new structure constants, the $T$-odd nucleon polarizabilities which parametrize the unknown non-Born part. These constants describe the response of the $T$-violating content of the nucleon to the external quasistatic electromagnetic field. As an estimate, I provide a HBChPT calculation for these new polarizabilities and discuss the implications for the experiment.
