Critically fixed Thurston maps: classification, recognition, and twisting

An orientation-preserving branched covering map $f\colon S^2 \to S^2$ is called a critically fixed Thurston map if $f$ fixes each of its critical points. It was recently shown that there is an explicit one-to-one correspondence between Möbius conjugacy classes of critically fixed rational maps and isomorphism classes of planar embedded connected graphs. In the paper, we generalize this result to the whole family of critically fixed Thurston maps. Namely, we show that each critically fixed Thurston map $f$ is obtained by applying the blow-up operation, introduced by Kevin Pilgrim and Tan Lei, to a pair $(G,φ)$, where $G$ is a planar embedded graph in $S^2$ without isolated vertices and $φ$ is an orientation-preserving homeomorphism of $S^2$ that fixes each vertex of $G$. This result allows us to provide a classification of combinatorial equivalence classes of critically fixed Thurston maps. We also develop an algorithm that reconstructs (up to isotopy) the pair $(G,φ)$ associated with a critically fixed Thurston map $f$. Finally, we solve some special instances of the twisting problem for the family of critically fixed Thurston maps obtained by blowing up pairs $(G, \mathrm{id}_{S^2})$.

Quasi-visual approximations

We develop the foundations of the theory of quasi-visual approximations of bounded metric spaces. Roughly speaking, these are sequences of covers of a given space for which the diameters of the sets in the covers shrink to zero and for which relative metric quantities (such as ratios of diameters and distances) are uniformly controlled. This framework has applications to questions in quasiconformal geometry. In particular, quasi-visual approximations can be used to detect whether a given homeomorphism between two bounded metric spaces is a quasisymmetry. We also explore the connection to the theory of Gromov hyperbolic spaces via the tile graph associated with a quasi-visual approximation. As an application, we relate these ideas to the dynamics of semi-hyperbolic rational maps. More specifically, we show that the Julia set of a rational map admits a dynamical quasi-visual approximation if and only if the map is semi-hyperbolic.

Tischler graphs of critically fixed rational maps and their applications

A rational map $f:\widehat{\mathbb{C}}\to\widehat{\mathbb{C}}$ on the Riemann sphere $\widehat{\mathbb{C}}$ is called critically fixed if each critical point of $f$ is fixed under $f$. In this article, we study the properties of a combinatorial invariant, called the Tischler graph, associated with such a map. We show that the Tischler graph of a critically fixed rational map is always connected, establishing a conjecture made by Kevin Pilgrim. This result allows us to solve two classical open problems in rational dynamics in the setting of critically fixed rational maps, namely the combinatorial classification problem and the global curve attractor problem. In particular, we prove that there is a canonical one-to-one correspondence between the conjugacy classes of critically fixed rational maps and the isomorphism classes of connected planar embedded graphs.

Profinite geometric iterated monodromy groups of postcritically finite polynomials in degree 3

In this article, we study the properties of profinite geometric iterated monodromy groups associated to polynomials. Such groups can be seen as generic representations of absolute Galois groups of number fields into the automorphism group of a regular rooted tree. Our main result is that, for a degree 3 postcritically finite polynomial over a number field, where each finite postcritical point has at least one preimage outside the critical orbits, the associated profinite geometric iterated monodromy group is finitely invariably generated. Moreover, this group is determined by the isomorphism class of the ramification portrait of the polynomial, up to conjugation by an automorphism of the ternary rooted tree. We also study the group-theoretical properties of such groups, namely their branch and torsion properties. In particular, we show that such groups are regular branch over the closure of their commutator subgroup, and that they contain torsion elements of any order realizable in the ternary tree.

The independence polynomial on recursive sequences of graphs

We study the zero sets of the independence polynomial on recursive sequences of graphs. We prove that for a maximally independent starting graph and a stable and expanding recursion algorithm, the zeros of the independence polynomial are uniformly bounded. Each of the recursion algorithms leads to a rational dynamical system whose formula, degree and the dimension of the space it acts upon depend on the specific algorithm. Nevertheless, we demonstrate that the qualitative behavior of the dynamics exhibit universal features that can be exploited to draw conclusions about the zero sets.

Classification of critically fixed anti-Thurston maps

We provide a complete combinatorial classification of critically fixed anti-Thurston maps, i.e., orientation-reversing branched covers of the 2-sphere that fix every critical point. The first step in the proof, and an interesting result in its own right, is a combinatorial classification of critically fixed anti-rational maps as "Schottky maps" associated to certain plane graphs. Both of these classification results heavily rely on an orientation-reversing version of Thurstons's theory, including the canonical decomposition of anti-Thurston maps, which we develop in this paper. Lastly, we give some applications to the global curve attractor and twisting problems, as well as to anti-rational maps with symmetries and to critically fixed anti-polynomials.

Thurston's pullback map, invariant covers, and the global dynamics on curves

We consider rational maps $f$ on the Riemann sphere $\widehat {\mathbb{C}}$ with an $f$-invariant set $P\subset \widehat {\mathbb{C}}$ of four marked points containing the postcritical set of $f$. We show that the dynamics of the corresponding Thurston pullback map $σ_f$ on the completion $\overline{\mathcal{T}_P}$ of the associated Teichmüller space $\mathcal{T}_P$ with respect to the Weil-Petersson metric is easy to understand when $\overline{\mathcal{T}_P}$ admits a cover by sets with good combinatorial and dynamical properties. In particular, the map $f$ has a finite global curve attractor in this case. Using a result by Eremenko and Gabrielov, we also show that if $P$ contains all critical points of $f$ and each point in $P$ is periodic, then such a cover of $\overline{\mathcal{T}_P}$ can be obtained from a $σ_f$-invariant tessellation by ideal hyperbolic triangles.

A canonical decomposition of postcritically finite rational maps and their maximal expanding quotients

We provide a natural canonical decomposition of postcritically finite rational maps with non-empty Fatou sets based on the topological structure of their Julia sets. The building blocks of this decomposition are maps where all Fatou components are Jordan disks with disjoint closures (Sierpiński maps), as well as those where any two Fatou components can be connected through a countable chain of Fatou components with common boundary points (crochet or Newton-like maps). We provide several alternative characterizations for our decomposition, as well as an algorithm for its effective computation. We also show that postcritically finite rational maps have dynamically natural quotients in which all crochet maps are collapsed to points, while all Sierpiński maps become small spheres; the quotient is a maximal expanding cactoid. The constructions work in the more general setup of Böttcher expanding maps, which are metric models of postcritically finite rational maps.

Eliminating Thurston obstructions and controlling dynamics on curves

Every Thurston map $f\colon S^2\rightarrow S^2$ on a $2$-sphere $S^2$ induces a pull-back operation on Jordan curves $α\subset S^2\setminus P_f$, where $P_f$ is the postcritical set of $f$. Here the isotopy class $[f^{-1}(α)]$ (relative to $P_f$) only depends on the isotopy class $[α]$. We study this operation for Thurston maps with four postcritical points. In this case a Thurston obstruction for the map $f$ can be seen as a fixed point of the pull-back operation. We show that if a Thurston map $f$ with a hyperbolic orbifold and four postcritical points has a Thurston obstruction, then one can "blow up" suitable arcs in the underlying $2$-sphere and construct a new Thurston map $\widehat f$ for which this obstruction is eliminated. We prove that no other obstruction arises and so $\widehat f$ is realized by a rational map. In particular, this allows for the combinatorial construction of a large class of rational Thurston maps with four postcritical points. We also study the dynamics of the pull-back operation under iteration. We exhibit a subclass of our rational Thurston maps with four postcritical points for which we can give positive answer to the global curve attractor problem.

Exponential growth of some iterated monodromy groups

Iterated monodromy groups of postcritically-finite rational maps form a rich class of self-similar groups with interesting properties. There are examples of such groups that have intermediate growth, as well as examples that have exponential growth. These groups arise from polynomials. We show exponential growth of the $\operatorname{IMG}$ of several non-polynomial maps. These include rational maps whose Julia set is the whole sphere, rational maps with Sierpiński carpet Julia set, and obstructed Thurston maps. Furthermore, we construct the first example of a non-renormalizable polynomial with a dendrite Julia set whose $\operatorname{IMG}$ has exponential growth.
