We give a thermodynamical interpretation of the moment map for toric varieties.
For any algebraic super-manifold M we define the super-ind-scheme LM of formal loops and study the transgression map (Radon transform) on differential forms in this context. Applying this to the super-manifold M=SX, the spectrum of the de Rham complex of a manifold X, we obtain, in particular, that the transgression map for X is a quasi-isomorphism between the [2,3)-truncated de Rham complex of X and the additive part of the [1,2)-truncated de Rham complex of LX. The proof uses the super-manifold SSX and the action of the Lie superalgebra sl(1|2) on this manifold. This quasi-isomorphism result provides a crucial step in the classification of sheaves of chiral differential operators in terms of geometry of the formal loop space.
We identify the category of real mixed Hodge structures with the category of vector bundles with connections (not necessarily flat) on C, equivariant with respect to C^*. Here C is the complex plane considered as a 2-dimensional real manifold, and C^* is the multiplicative group of complex numbers considered as a real group.
We define the character of a group representation in a 2-category C. For linear C, this notion yields a Hopkins-Kuhn-Ravenel type character theory defined on pairs of commuting elements of the group. We discuss some examples and prove a formula for the character of the induced representation.

We construct algebraic and algebro-geometric models for the spaces of unparametrized paths. This is done by considering a path as a holonomy functional on indeterminate connections. For a manifold X, we construct a Lie algebroid P which serves as the tangent space to X (punctual paths) inside the space of all unparametrized paths. It serves as a natural receptacle of all "covariant derivatives of the curvature" for all bundles with connections on X. If X is an algebraic variety, we integrate P to a formal groupoid G which can be seen as the formal neighborhood of X inside the space of paths. We establish a relation of G with the stable map spaces of Kontsevich.
We construct virtual fundamental classes for dg-manifolds whose tangent sheaves have cohomology only in degrees 0 and 1. This condition is analogous to the existence of a perfect obstruction theory in the approach of Behrend-Fantechi [BF] or Li-Tian [LT]. Our class is initially defined in K-theory, as the class of the structure sheaf of the dg-manifold. We compare our construction with that of [BF] as well as with the original proposal of Kontsevich. We prove a Riemann-Roch type result for dg-manifolds which involves integration over the virtual class. We prove a localization theorem for our virtual classes. We also associate to any dg-manifold of our type a cobordism class of almost complex (smooth) manifolds. This supports the intuition that working with dg-manifolds is the correct algebro-geometric replacement of the analytic technique of "deforming to transversal intersection".
We study the non-archimedean counterpart to the complex amoeba of an algebraic variety, and show that it coincides with a polyhedral set defined by Bieri and Groves using valuations. For hypersurfaces this set is also the tropical variety of the defining polynomial. Using non-archimedean analysis and a recent result of Conrad we prove that the amoeba of an irreducible variety is connected. We introduce the notion of an adelic amoeba for varieties over global fields, and establish a form of the local-global principle for them. This principle is used to explain the calculation of the nonexpansive set for a related dynamical system.
We describe the quantum cohomology ring of a toric Fano variety $X$ in terms of the usual topological cohomology ring for an auxiliary infinite-dimensional scheme. This scheme is a part of an algebro-geometric model for the universal cover of the space of free loops with values in $X$.
This work introduces author's approach to harmonic analysis on algebraic groups over functional two-dimensional local fields. For a two-dimensional local field a Hecke algebra which is formed by operators which integrate pro-locally-constant complex functions over a non-compact domain is defined and its properties are described.
We develop an approach to noncommutative algebraic geometry ``in the perturbative regime" around ordinary commutative geometry. Let R be a noncommutative algebra and A=R/[R,R] its commutativization. We describe what should be the formal neighborhood of M=Spec(A) in the (nonexistent) space Spec(R). This is a ringed space (M,O) where O is a certain sheaf of noncommutative rings on M. Such ringed spaces can be glued together to form more global objects called NC-schemes. We are especially interested in NC-manifolds, NC-schemes for which the completion of O at every point of M is isomorphic to the algebra of noncommutative power series (completion of the free associative algebra). An explicit description of the simplest NC-manifold, the affine space, is given by using the Feynman-Maslov calculus of ordered operators. We show that many familiar algebraic varieties can be naturally enlarged to NC-manifolds. Among these are all the classical flag varieties and all the smooth moduli spaces of vector bundles.
Hecke algebras are usually defined algebraically, via generators and relations. We give a new algebro-geometric construction of affine and double-affine Hecke algebras (the former is known as the Iwahori-Hecke algebra, and the latter was introduced by Cherednik [Ch1]). More generally, to any generalized Cartan matrix A and a point q in a 1-dimensional complex algebraic group \c we associate an associative algebra H. If A is of finite type and \c=C^*, the algebra H is the affine Hecke algebra of the corresponding finite root system. If A is of affine type and \c=C^* then H is, essentially, the Cherednik algebra. The case \c=C corresponds to `degenerate' counterparts of the above objects cosidered by Drinfeld [Dr] and Lusztig [L2]. Finally, taking \c to be an elliptic curve one gets some new elliptic analogues of the affine Hecke algebra.
In this paper we explain the parallelism in the classification of three different kinds of mathematical objects: (i) Classical r-matrices. (ii) Generalized cohomology theories that have Chern classes for complex vector bundles. (iii) 1-dimensional formal groups. The main point of the paper is a construction of the elliptic algebra associated to Belavin's classical elliptic r-matrix in terms of Equivariant elliptic cohomology of the Steinberg varieties associated to some partial flag manifolds.
This note is an attempt to extend "Geometric Langlands Conjecture" from algebraic curves to algebraic surfaces. We introduce certain Hecke-type operators on vector bundles on an algebraic surface. The crucial observation is that the algebra generated by the Hecke operators turns out to be a homomorphic image of the {\it quantum toroidal algebra}. The latter is a quantization, in the spirit of Drinfeld-Jimbo, of the universal enveloping algebra of the universal central extension of a "double-loop" Lie algebra. This yields, in particular, a new geometric construction of affine quantum groups of types A, D E in terms of Hecke operators for an elliptic surface.
