State counting in gravity and maximal entropy principle

It is known that the semiclassical approximation to the gravity path integral can be leveraged to explain certain inherently quantum aspects of gravity. One such aspect is the state-counting interpretation of the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of black holes. A second aspect is the Page curve for the entanglement entropy of Hawking radiation, which agrees with expectations from unitarity. We show that these two questions are equivalent from the gravity path integral point of view. In particular, the Hawking's information loss puzzle gets resolved automatically by considering any (over)complete basis of black hole microstates which is compatible with black hole entropy. The tool which relates the two questions is a convex optimization problem for the von Neumann entropy of Hawking radiation.

Holographic dual of Bures metric and subregion complexity

Within the AdS/CFT correspondence, computational complexity for reduced density matrices of holographic conformal field theories has been conjectured to be related to certain geometric observables in the dual gravity theory. We study this conjecture from both the gravity and field theory point of view. Specifically, we consider a measure of complexity associated to the Bures metric on the space of density matrices. We compute this complexity measure for mixed states associated to single intervals in descendant states of the vacuum in 2d CFTs. Moreover, we derive from first principles a geometric observable dual to the Bures metric which is localized in the entanglement wedge of the AdS spacetime associated to the quantum circuit on the boundary. Finally, we compare the Bures metric complexity measure with holographic subregion complexity within the ``complexity=volume'' paradigm for perturbatively small transformations of the vacuum. While there is no exact agreement between these two quantities, we find striking similarities as we vary the target state and interval size, suggesting that these quantities are closely related.

Counting microstates of out-of-equilibrium black hole fluctuations

We construct and count the microstates of out-of-equilibrium eternal AdS black holes in which a shell carrying an order one fraction of the black hole mass is emitted from the past horizon and re-absorbed at the future horizon. Our microstates have semiclassical interpretations in terms of matter propagating behind the horizon. We show that they span a Hilbert space with a dimension equal to the exponential of the horizon area of the intermediate black hole. This is consistent with the idea that, in a non-equilibrium setting, entropy is the logarithm of the number of microscopic configurations consistent with the dynamical macroscopic state. In our case, therefore, the entropy should measure the number of microstates consistent with a large and atypical macroscopic black hole fluctuation due to which part of the early time state becomes fully known to an external observer.

Factorization of the Hilbert space of eternal black holes in general relativity

We generalize recent results in two-dimensional Jackiw-Teitelboim gravity to study factorization of the Hilbert space of eternal black holes in quantum gravity with a negative cosmological constant in any dimension. We approach the problem by computing the trace of two-sided observables as a sum over a recently constructed family of semiclassically well-controlled black hole microstates. These microstates, which contain heavy matter shells behind the horizon and form an overcomplete basis of the Hilbert space, exist in any theory of gravity with general relativity as its low energy limit. Using this representation of the microstates, we show that the trace of operators dual to functions of the Hamiltonians of the left and right holographic CFTs factorizes into a product over left and right factors to leading order in the semiclassical limit. Under certain conditions this implies factorization of the Hilbert space.

Holographic complexity: braneworld gravity versus the Lloyd bound

We explore the complexity equals volume proposal for planar black holes in anti-de Sitter (AdS) spacetime in 2+1 dimensions, with an end of the world (ETW) brane behind the horizon. We allow for the possibility of intrinsic gravitational dynamics in the form of Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity to be localized on the brane. We compute the asymptotic rate of change of volume complexity analytically and obtain the full time dependence using numerical techniques. We find that the inclusion of JT gravity on the brane leads to interesting effects on time dependence of holographic complexity. We identify the region in parameter space (the brane location and the JT coupling) for which the rate of change of complexity violates the Lloyd bound. In an equivalent description of the model in terms of an asymptotically AdS wormhole, we connect the violation of the Lloyd bound to the violation of a suitable energy condition in the bulk that we introduce. We also compare the Lloyd bound constraints to previously derived constraints on the bulk parameters in this model that are based on bounds on entanglement growth in the dual CFT state.

Delicate windows into evaporating black holes

We revisit the model of an AdS$_2$ black hole in JT gravity evaporating into an external bath. We study when, and how much, information about the black hole interior can be accessed through different portions of the Hawking radiation collected in the bath, and we obtain the corresponding full quantitative Page curves. As a refinement of previous results, we describe the island phase transition for a semi-infinite segment of radiation in the bath, establishing access to the interior for times within the regime of applicability of the model. For finite-size segments in the bath, one needs to include the purifier of the black hole microscopic dual together with the radiation segment in order to access the interior information. We identify four scenarios of the entropy evolution in this case, including a possibility where the interior reconstruction window is temporarily interrupted. Analyzing the phase structure of the Page curve of a finite segment with length comparable to the Page time, we demonstrate that it is very sensitive to changes of the parameters of the model. We also discuss the evolution of the subregion complexity of the radiation during the black hole evaporation.

Submerging islands through thermalization

We illustrate scenarios in which Hawking radiation collected in finite regions of a reservoir provides temporary access to the interior of black holes through transient entanglement "islands". Whether these islands appear and the amount of time for which they dominate - sometimes giving way to a thermalization transition - is controlled by the amount of radiation we probe. In the first scenario, two reservoirs are coupled to an eternal black hole. The second scenario involves two holographic quantum gravitating systems at different temperatures interacting through a Rindler-like reservoir, which acts as a heat engine maintaining thermal equilibrium. The latter situation, which has an intricate phase structure, describes two eternal black holes radiating into each other through a shared reservoir.

Spectral form factor in the double-scaled SYK model

In this note we study the spectral form factor in the SYK model in large $q$ limit at infinite temperature. We construct analytic solutions for the saddle point equations that describe the slope and the ramp regions of the spectral form factor time dependence. These saddle points are obtained by taking different approaches to the large $q$ limit: the slope region is described by a replica-diagonal solution and the ramp region is described by a replica-nondiagonal solution. We find that the onset of the ramp behavior happens at the Thouless time of order $q \log q$. We also evaluate the one-loop corrections to the slope and ramp solutions for late times, and study the transition from the slope to the ramp. We show this transition is accompanied by the breakdown of the perturbative $1/q$ expansion, and that the Thouless time is defined by the consistency of extrapolation of this expansion to late times.

Replica-nondiagonal solutions in the SYK model

We study the SYK model in the large $N$ limit beyond the replica-diagonal approximation. First we show that there are exact replica-nondiagonal solutions of the saddle point equations for $q=2$ for any finite replica number $M$. In the interacting $q=4$ case we are able to construct the numerical solutions, which are in one-to-one correspondence to the analytic solutions of the quadratic model. These solutions are singular in the $M \to 0$ limit in both quadratic and quartic interaction cases. The calculations of the on-shell action at finite integer $M$ show that the nondiagonal replica-symmetric saddles are subleading in both quadratic and quartic cases. We also study replica-nondiagonal solutions of the SYK in the strong coupling limit. For arbitrary $q$ we show that besides the usual solutions of the replica-diagonal saddle point equations in the conformal limit, there are also replica-nondiagonal solutions for any value of $M$ (including zero). The specific configurations that we study, have factorized time and replica dependencies. The corresponding saddle point equations are separable at strong coupling, and can be solved using the Parisi ansatz from spin glass theory. We construct the solutions which correspond to the replica-symmetric case and to one-step replica symmetry breaking. We compute the regularized free energy on these solutions in the limit of zero replicas. It is observed that there are nondiagonal solutions with the regularized free energy lower than that of the standard diagonal conformal solution.

Revealing nonperturbative effects in the SYK model

We study the large $N$ saddle points of two SYK chains coupled by an interaction that is nonlocal in Euclidean time. We start from analytic treatment of the free case with $q=2$ and perform the numerical study of the interacting case $q=4$. We show that in both cases there is a nontrivial phase structure with infinite number of phases. Every phase correspond to a saddle point in the non-interacting two-replica SYK. The nontrivial saddle points have non-zero value of the replica-nondiagonal correlator in the sense of quasi-averaging, when the coupling between replicas is turned off. Thus, the nonlocal interaction between replicas provides a protocol for turning the nonperturbatively subleading effects in SYK into non-equilibrium configurations which dominate at large $N$. For comparison we also study two SYK chains with local interaction for $q=2$ and $q=4$. We show that the $q=2$ model also has a similar phase structure, whereas in the $q=4$ model, dual to the traversable wormhole, the phase structure is different.

On 1/N diagrammatics in the SYK model beyond the conformal limit

In the present work we discuss aspects of the 1/N expansion in the SYK model, formulated in terms of the semiclassical expansion of the bilocal field path integral. We derive cutting rules, which are applicable for all planar vertices in the bilocal field diagrams. We show that these cutting rules lead to novel identities on higher-point correlators, which could be used to constrain their form beyond the solvable conformal limit. We also demonstrate how the cutting rules can simplify the computation of amplitudes on an example of the six-point function.

"Triangular" extremal dilatonic dyons

Explicit dyonic dilaton black holes of the four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-dilaton theory are known only for two particular values of the dilaton coupling constant $a =1,\sqrt{3}$, while for other $a$ numerical evidence was presented earlier about existence of extremal dyons in theories with the discrete sequence of dilaton couplings $a=\sqrt{n(n+1)/2}$ with integer $n$. Apart from the lower members $n=1,\,2$, this family of theories does not have motivation from supersymmetry or higher dimensions, and so far the above quantization rule has not been derived analytically. We fill this gap showing that this rule follows from analyticity of the dilaton at the $AdS_2\times S^2$ event horizon with $n$ being the leading dilaton power in the series expansion. We also present generalization for asymptotically anti-de Sitter dyonic black holes with spherical, plane and hyperbolic topology of the horizon.
