Geometrical approach to separation of variables in mechanical systems

The article presents a compact review of the analytical results (2002-2009) in the study of the system describing the motion of a top in two constant fields. The Liouville integrability of this system under certain condition of the Kowalevski type was established by A.G.Reyman and M.A.Semenov-Tian-Shansky. We present some geometrical foundations of finding separations of variables. Two systems of local planar coordinates are introduced leading to separation of variables for two subsystems with two degrees of freedom in the dynamics of the generalized Kowalevski top.

Bifurcation diagram of the generalized 4th Appelrot class

The article continues the author's publication in [Mech. Tverd. Tela, No. 34, 2004], in which the generalizations of the Appelrot classes of the Kowalevski top motions are found for the case of the double force field. We consider the analogue of the 4th Appelrot class. The trajectories of this family fill the surface which is four-dimensional in the neighborhood of its generic points. The complete system of two integrals is pointed out. For these integrals the bifurcation diagram is established and the admissible region for the corresponding constants is found.

One class of solutions with two invariant relations for the problem of motion of the Kowalevski top in double constant field

Consider a rigid body having a fixed point in a superposition of two constant force fields (for example, gravitational and magnetic). Introducing the condition of Kowalevski type, O.I.Bogoyavlensky (1984) has found the first integral generalizing that of Kowalevski and pointed out the integrable case with two invariant relations, which reduces to the 1st Appelrot class when one of the fields vanishes. The article presents a new case with two invariant relations integrable in Jacobi sense and generalizing the 2nd and 3rd classes of Appelrot.

Separation of variables in the generalized 4th Appelrot class

We consider the analogue of the 4th Appelrot class of motions of the Kowalevski top for the case of two constant force fields. The trajectories of this family fill the four-dimensional surface O^4 in the six-dimensional phase space. The constants of three first integrals in involution restricted to this surface fill one of the sheets of the bifurcation diagram in R^3. We point out the pair of partial integrals to obtain the explicit parametric equations of this sheet. The induced system on O^4 is shown to be Hamiltonian with two degrees of freedom having the thin set of points where the induced symplectic structure degenerates. The region of existence of motions in terms of the integral constants is found. We provide the separation of variables on O^4 and the algebraic formulae for the initial phase variables.

Separation of variables and integral manifolds in one problem of motion of generalized Kowalevski top

In the phase space of the integrable Hamiltonian system with three degrees of freedom used to describe the motion of a Kowalevski-type top in a double constant force field, we point out the four-dimensional invariant manifold. It is shown that this manifold consists of critical motions generating a smooth sheet of the bifurcation diagram, and the induced dynamic system is Hamiltonian with certain subset of points of degeneration of the symplectic structure. We find the transformation separating variables in this system. As a result, the solutions can be represented in terms of elliptic functions of time. The corresponding phase topology is completely described.

Explicit integration of one problem of motion of the generalized Kowalevski top

In the problem of motion of the Kowalevski top in a double force field the 4-dimensional invariant submanifold of the phase space was pointed out by M.P.Kharlamov (Mekh. Tverd. Tela, 32, 2002). We show that the equations of motion on this manifold can be separated by the appropriate change of variables, the new variables s1, s2 being elliptic functions of time. The natural phase variables (components of the angular velocity and the direction vectors of the forces with respect to the movable basis) are expressed via s1, s2 explicitly in elementary algebraic functions.

Bifurcation diagrams of the Kowalevski top in two constant fields

The Kowalevski top in two constant fields is known as the unique profound example of an integrable Hamiltonian system with three degrees of freedom not reducible to a family of systems in fewer dimensions. As the first approach to topological analysis of this system we find the critical set of the integral map; this set consists of the trajectories with number of frequencies less than three. We obtain the equations of the bifurcation diagram in R^3. A correspondence to the Appelrot classes in the classical Kowalevski problem is established. The admissible regions for the values of the first integrals are found in the form of some inequalities of general character and boundary conditions for the induced diagrams on energy levels.

Bifurcation diagrams and critical subsystems of the Kowalevski gyrostat in two constant fields

The Kowalevski gyrostat in two constant fields is known as the unique example of an integrable Hamiltonian system with three degrees of freedom not reducible to a family of systems in fewer dimensions and still having the clear mechanical interpretation. The practical explicit integration of this system can hardly be obtained by the existing techniques. Then the challenging problem becomes to fulfil the qualitative investigation based on the study of the Liouville foliation of the phase space. As the first approach to topological analysis of this system we find the stratified critical set of the momentum map; this set consists of the trajectories with number of frequencies less than three. We obtain the equations of the bifurcation diagram in three-dimensional space. These equations have the form convenient for the classification of the bifurcation sets induced on 5-dimensional iso-energetic levels.
