Supersymmetry in quantum optics and in spin-orbit coupled systems

Light-matter interaction is naturally described by coupled bosonic and fermionic subsystems. This suggests that a certain Bose-Fermi duality is naturally present in the fundamental quantum mechanical description of photons interacting with atoms. We reveal submanifolds in parameter space of a basic light-matter interacting system where this duality is promoted to a supersymmetry (SUSY) which remains unbroken. We show that SUSY is robust with respect to decoherence and dissipation. In particular, a stationary density matrix at the supersymmetric lines in the parameter space has a degenerate subspace. A dimension of this subspace is given by the Witten index and thus topologically protected. As a consequence of this SUSY, dissipative dynamics at the supersymmetric lines is constrained by an additional conserved quantity which translates some part of information about an initial state into the stationary state subspace. We also demonstrate a robustness of this additional conserved quantity away from the supersymmetric lines. In addition, we demonstrate that the same SUSY structures are present in condensed matter systems with spin-orbit couplings of Rashba and Dresselhaus types, and therefore spin-orbit coupled systems at the SUSY lines should be robust with respect to various types of disorder and decoherences. Our findings suggest that optical and condensed matter systems at the SUSY points can be used for quantum information technology and can open an avenue for quantum simulation of the SUSY field theories.

The quench dynamics of a dissipative quantum system: a renormalization group study

We study dissipation in a small quantum system coupled to an environment held in thermodynamic equilibrium. The relaxation dynamics of a system subject to an abrupt quench in the parameters of the underlying Hamiltonian is investigated using two complementary renormalization group approaches. The methods are applied to the Ohmic spin-boson model close to the coherent-to-incoherent transition. In particular, the role of non-Markovian memory for the relaxation before and after the quench of the spin-boson coupling and the Zeeman splitting of the up and down spin is investigated.

Full counting statistics of photons interacting with emitter

A complete characterization of quantum fluctuations in many-body systems is accessible through the full counting statistics. We present an exact computation of statistical properties of light in a basic model of light-matter interaction: a multimode photonic field coupled to a single two-level emitter. We mostly consider an initial coherent state in a given mode and demonstrate how the original Poissonian statistics gets modified because of quantum many-body scattering effects leading to non-Poissonian distributions. We argue that measuring this statistics in a simple quantum optical setup provides an insight into many-body correlation effects with photons.

Nonequilibrium Kondo model: Crossover from weak to strong coupling

We analyze the nonequilibrium Kondo model at finite voltage and temperature by using a new formulation of the real-time renormalization group method with the Laplace variable as the flow parameter. We evaluate the energy-dependent spin relaxation rate and nonlinear conductance, and derive an approximate form for the universal line shape for the latter in the whole crossover regime from weak to strong coupling. The results are shown to agree well with exact methods in equilibrium, Fermi-liquid theory, weak-coupling expansions, and recent experiments. For the transient spin dynamics we find a universal exponential decay in the long-time limit along with a truncation-dependent pre-exponential power law. For multichannel models a pure power-law decay typical for non-Fermi-liquid behaviour is predicted.

Scattering of massless particles in one-dimensional chiral channel

We present a general formalism describing a propagation of an arbitrary multiparticle wave packet in a one-dimensional multimode chiral channel coupled to an ensemble of emitters which are distributed at arbitrary positions. The formalism is based on a direct and exact resummation of diagrammatic series for the multiparticle scattering matrix. It is complimentary to the Bethe Ansatz and to approaches based on equations of motion, and it reveals a simple and transparent structure of scattering states. In particular, we demonstrate how this formalism works on various examples, including scattering of one- and two-photon states off two- and three-level emitters, off an array of emitters as well as scattering of coherent light. We argue that this formalism can be constructively used for study of scattering of an arbitrary initial photonic state off emitters with arbitrary degree of complexity.

Non-equilibrium transport through quantum dots with Dzyaloshinsky--Moriya--Kondo interaction

We study non-equilibrium transport through a single-orbital Anderson model in a magnetic field with spin-dependent hopping amplitudes. In the cotunneling regime it is described by an effective spin-1/2 dot with a Dzyaloshinsky--Moriya--Kondo (DMK) interaction between the spin on the dot and the electron spins in the leads. Using a real-time renormalization group technique we show that at low temperatures (i) the DMK interaction is strongly renormalized, (ii) the renormalized magnetic field acquires a linear voltage dependence, and (iii) the differential conductance exhibits a voltage asymmetry which is strongly enhanced by logarithmic corrections. We propose transport measurements in which these signatures can be observed.

Nonequilibrium functional RG with frequency dependent vertex function: A study of the single impurity Anderson model

We investigate nonequilibrium properties of the single impurity Anderson model by means of the functional renormalization group (fRG) within Keldysh formalism. We present how the level broadening Gamma/2 can be used as flow parameter for the fRG. This choice preserves important aspects of the Fermi liquid behaviour that the model exhibits in case of particle-hole symmetry. An approximation scheme for the Keldysh fRG is developed which accounts for the frequency dependence of the two-particle vertex in a way similar but not equivalent to a recently published approximation to the equilibrium Matsubara fRG. Our method turns out to be a flexible tool for the study of weak to intermediate on-site interactions U <= 3 Gamma. In equilibrium we find excellent agreement with NRG results for the linear conductance at finite gate voltage, magnetic field, and temperature. In nonequilibrium, our results for the current agree well with TD-DMRG. For the nonlinear conductance as function of the bias voltage, we propose reliable results at finite magnetic field and finite temperature. Furthermore, we demonstrate the exponentially small scale of the Kondo temperature to appear in the second order derivative of the self-energy. We show that the approximation is, however, not able to reproduce the scaling of the effective mass at large interactions.

Relaxation vs decoherence: Spin and current dynamics in the anisotropic Kondo model at finite bias and magnetic field

Using a nonequilibrium renormalization group method we study the real-time evolution of spin and current in the anisotropic Kondo model (both antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic) at finite magnetic field $h_0$ and bias voltage $V$. We derive analytic expressions for all times in the weak-coupling regime $\max\{V,h_0,1/t\}\gg T_c$ ($T_c=$ strong coupling scale). We find that all observables decay both with the spin relaxation and decoherence rates $Γ_{1/2}$. Various $V$-dependent logarithmic, oscillatory, and power-law contributions are predicted. The low-energy cutoff of logarithmic terms is generically identified by the difference of transport decay rates. For small times $t\ll \max\{V,h_0\}^{-1}$, we obtain universal dynamics for spin and current.

Properties of multi-particle Green and vertex functions within Keldysh formalism

The increasing interest in nonequilibrium effects in condensed matter theory motivates the adaption of diverse equilibrium techniques to Keldysh formalism. For methods based on multi-particle Green or vertex functions this involves a detailed knowledge of the real-time properties of those functions. In this paper, we derive general properties of fermionic and bosonic multi-particle Green and vertex functions for a stationary state described within Keldysh formalism. Special emphasis is put on the analytic properties associated with causality and on a detailed discussion of the Kubo-Martin-Schwinger conditions which characterise thermal equilibrium. Finally we describe how diagrammatic approximations and approximations within the functional renormalisation group approach respect these properties.

Spin-density induced by electromagnetic wave in two-dimensional electron gas with both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit couplings

We consider the magnetic response of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) with both Rashba and Dresselhaus spin-orbit coupling to a microwave excitation. We generalize the results of [A. Shnirman and I. Martin, Europhys. Lett. 78, 27001 (2007).], where pure Rashba coupling was studied. We observe that the microwave with the in-plane electric field and the out-of-plane magnetic field creates an out-of-plane spin polarization. The effect is more prominent in clean systems with resolved spin-orbit-split subbands. Considered as response to the microwave magnetic field, the spin-orbit contribution to the magnetization far exceeds the usual Zeeman contribution in the clean limit. The effect vanishes when the Rashba and the Dresselhaus couplings have equal strength.

On the extra phase correction to the semiclassical spin coherent-state propagator

The problem of an origin of the Solary-Kochetov extra-phase contribution to the naive semiclassical form of a generalized phase-space propagator is addressed with the special reference to the su(2) spin case which is the most important in applications. While the extra-phase correction to a flat phase-space propagator can straightforwardly be shown to appear as a difference between the principal and the Weyl symbols of a Hamiltonian in the next-to-leading order expansion in the semiclassical parameter, the same statement for the semiclassical spin coherent-state propagator holds provided the Holstein-Primakoff representation of the su(2) algebra generators is employed.

Semiclassical theory of spin-orbit interaction in the extended phase space

We consider the semiclassical theory in a joint phase space of spin and orbital degrees of freedom. The method is developed from the path integrals using the spin-coherent-state representation, and yields the trace formula for the density of states. We discuss special cases, such as weak and strong spin-orbit coupling, and relate the present theory to the earlier approaches.
