Skyrmions and Hopfions in 3D Frustrated Magnets

A model of an inversion-symmetric frustrated spin system is introduced which hosts three-dimensional extensions of magnetic Skyrmions. In the continuum approximation this model reduces to a non-linear sigma model on a squashed sphere which has a natural interpolating parameter. At one limit of the parameter the model reduces to a frustrated magnetic system earlier considered by Sutcliffe as a host to Hopfions, and in the other limit it becomes very similar to the 3D Skyrme model. To better understand the relation between Hopfions and 3D Skyrmions a model interpolating between the Faddeev-Niemi model and the Skyrme model is reconsidered and it is shown that energies of the solitons obey a linear BPS bound. The 3D Skyrmions in the frustrated magnetic model are found and compared to the rational map ansatz.

Sigma model on a squashed sphere with a Wess-Zumino term

A class of two-dimensional sigma models interpolating between $CP^1$ and the $SU(2)$ principal chiral model is discussed. We add the Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten term and examine the renormalization group flow of the two coupling constants which characterize the model under consideration. The model flows to the $SU(2)$ WZNW conformal field theory in the IR. There is an ordinary phase in which the model flows from the asymptotically free $CP^1$ model coupled to an extra massless degree of freedom in the UV. At higher loop order we discover that there is also a phase in which the model can flow from non-trivial fixed points in the UV. A non-perturbative confirmation of these extra fixed points would be desirable.

Treating Divergent Perturbation Theory: Lessons from Exactly Solvable 2D Models at Large $N$

We consider the operator product expansion (OPE) of correlation functions in the supersymmetric $O(N)$ non-linear sigma model at sub-leading order in the large $N$ limit in order to study the cancellation between ambiguities coming from infrared renormalons and those coming from various operators in the OPE. As has been discussed in the context of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in four dimensions, supersymmetry presents a challenge to this cancellation. In a bid to solve this problem we consider $O(N)$ as a toy model. A background field method inspired by Polyakov's treatment of the renormalization of the bosonic $O(N)$ model is used to identify explicit operators in the OPE of the two-point functions of bosonic and fermionic fields in the model. In order to identify the coefficient functions in the OPE, the exact two-point functions at sub-leading order in large $N$ are expanded in powers of the natural infrared length scale. The ambiguities arising from renormalons in the coefficient functions and vacuum expectation values of operators in the OPE are shown to cancel to all orders. The question of supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory without matter remains open.

Bringing Yang-Mills Theory Closer to Quasiclassics

A deformation of pure Yang-Mill theory by a phantom field similar to the Faddeev-Popov ghost is considered. In this theory an {\em Ersatz}-supersymmetry is identified which results in cancellation of quantum corrections up to two-loop order. A quadruplet built from two complex fields in the adjoint -- the Faddeev-Popov ghost $c^a$ and the phantom $Φ^a$, all with the wrong statistics -- balances four gauge fields $a_μ^a$. At this level, the instanton measure and the $β$ function is fully determined by quasiclassics. In a simple $ϕ^4$ theory with a phantom added I identify a strictly conserved {\em Ersatz}-supercurrent. In the latter theory unitarity of amplitudes persists despite the presence of the phantom. In deformed Yang-Mills it is likely (although not proven) to persist too in all amplitudes with only gluon external legs. It remains to be seen whether this construction is just a device facilitating some loop calculations or broader applications can be found.

Supersymmetric Proximity

I argue that a certain perturbative proximity exists between some supersymmetric and non-supersymmetric theories (namely, pure Yang-Mills and adjoint QCD with two flavors, adjQCD$_{N_f=2}$). I start with ${\mathcal N}=2$ super-Yang-Mills theory built of two ${\mathcal N}=1$ superfields: vector and chiral. In ${\mathcal N}=1$ language the latter presents matter in the adjoint representation of SU$(N). $ Then I convert the matter superfield into a "{\em phantom}" one (in analogy with ghosts), breaking ${\mathcal N}=2$ down to ${\mathcal N}=1$. The global SU(2) acting between two gluinos in the original theory becomes graded. Exact results in thus deformed theory allows one to obtain insights in certain aspects of non-supersymmetric gluodynamics. In particular, it becomes clear how the splitting of the $β$ function coefficients in pure gluodynamics, $β_1 =(4 -\frac 13 )N$ and $β_2= (6-\frac 13)N^2$, occurs. Here the first terms in the braces (4 and 6, always integers) are geometry-related while the second terms ($-\frac 13$ in both cases) are {\it bona fide} quantum effects. In the same sense adjQCD$_{N_f=2}$ is close to ${\mathcal N}=2$ SYM. Thus, I establish a certain proximity between pure gluodynamics and adjQCD$_{N_f=2}$ with supersymmetric theories. (Of course, in both cases we loose all features related to flat directions and Higgs/Coulomb branches in ${\mathcal N}=2$.) As a warmup exercise I use this idea in 2D CP(1) sigma model with ${\mathcal N}=(2,2)$ supersymmetry, through the minimal heterotic ${\mathcal N}=(0,2) \to$ bosonic CP(1).

$θ$-dependence of light nuclei and nucleosynthesis

We investigate the impact of the QCD vacuum at nonzero $θ$ on the properties of light nuclei, Big Bang nucleosynthesis, and stellar nucleosynthesis. Our analysis starts with a calculation of the $θ$-dependence of the neutron-proton mass difference and neutron decay using chiral perturbation theory. We then discuss the $θ$-dependence of the nucleon-nucleon interaction using a one-boson-exchange model and compute the properties of the two-nucleon system. Using the universal properties of four-component fermions at large scattering length, we then deduce the binding energies of the three-nucleon and four-nucleon systems. Based on these results, we discuss the implications for primordial abundances of light nuclei, the production of nuclei in stellar environments, and implications for an anthropic view of the universe.

Long Way to Ricci Flatness

We study two-dimensional weighted ${\mathcal N}=2$ supersymmetric $\mathbb{CP}$ models with the goal of exploring their infrared (IR) limit. $\mathbb{WCP}(N,\widetilde{N})$ are simplified versions of world-sheet theories on non-Abelian strings in four-dimensional ${\mathcal N}=2$ QCD. In the gauged linear sigma model (GLSM) formulation, $\mathbb{WCP} (N,\widetilde{N})$ has $N$ charges +1 and $\widetilde{N}$ charges $-1$ fields. As well-known, at $\widetilde{N}=N$ this GLSM is conformal. Its target space is believed to be a non-compact Calabi-Yau manifold. We mostly focus on the $N=2$ case, then the Calabi-Yau space is a conifold. On the other hand, in the non-linear sigma model (NLSM) formulation the model has ultra-violet logarithms and does not look conformal. Moreover, its metric is not Ricci-flat. We address this puzzle by studying the renormalization group (RG) flow of the model. We show that the metric of NLSM becomes Ricci-flat in the IR. Moreover, it tends to the known metric of the resolved conifold. We also study a close relative of the $\mathbb{WCP}$ model -- the so called $zn$ model -- which in actuality represents the world sheet theory on a non-Abelian semilocal string and show that this $zn$ model has similar RG properties.

New Soft Theorems for Goldstone Boson Amplitudes

In this letter we discuss new soft theorems for the Goldstone boson amplitudes with non-vanishing soft limits. The standard argument is that the non-linearly realized shift symmetry leads to the vanishing of scattering amplitudes in the soft limit, known as the Alder zero. This statement involves certain assumptions of the absence of cubic vertices and the absence of linear terms in the transformations of fields. For theories which fail to satisfy these conditions, we derive a new soft theorem which involves certain linear combinations of lower point amplitudes, generalizing the Adler zero statement. We provide an explicit example of $SU(N)/SU(N-1)$ sigma model which was also recently studied in the context of $U(1)$ fibrated models. The soft theorem can be then used as an input into the modified soft recursion relations for the reconstruction of all tree-level amplitudes.

From Gauged Linear Sigma Models to Geometric Representation of $\mathbb{WCP}(N,\tilde{N})$ in 2D

In this paper two issues are addressed. First, we discuss renormalization properties of a class of gauged linear sigma models (GLSM) which reduce to $\mathbb{WCP}(N,\tilde{N})$ non-linear sigma models (NLSM) in the low-energy limit. Sometimes they are referred to as the Hanany-Tong models. If supersymmetry is ${\cal N} =(2,2)$ the ultraviolet-divergent logarithm in LGSM appears, in the renormalization of the Fayet-Iliopoulos parameter, and is exhausted by a single tadpole graph. This is not the case in the daughter NLSMs. As a result, the one-loop renormalizations are different in GLSMs and their daughter NLSMs We explain this difference and identify its source. In particular, we show why at $N=\tilde N$ there is no UV logarithms in the parent GLSM, while they do appear on the corresponding NLSM does not vanish. In the second part of the paper we discuss the same problem for a class of ${\cal N} =(0,2)$ GLSMs considered previously. In this case renormalization is not limited to one loop; all-orders exact $β$ functions for GLSMs are known. We discuss divergent loops at one and two-loop levels.

Composite Non-Abelian Strings with Grassmannian Models on the World Sheet

Most of the non-Abelian string-vortices studied so far are characterized by two-dimensional \cpn models with various degrees of supersymmetry on their world sheet. We generalize this construction to "composite" non-Abelian strings supporting the Grassmann $\mathcal{G}(L,M)$ models (here $L+M=N$). The generalization is straightforward and provides, among other results, a simple and transparent way for counting the number of vacua in ${\mathcal N}=(2,2)$ Grassmannian model.

Bose-Fermi cancellations without supersymmetry

We show that adjoint QCD features very strong Bose-Fermi cancellations in the large $N$ limit, despite the fact that it is manifestly non-supersymmetric. The difference between the bosonic and fermionic densities of states in large $N$ adjoint QCD turns out to have a `two-dimensional' scaling $\sim \exp{(\sqrt{\ell E})}$ for large energies $E$ in finite spatial volume, where $\ell$ is a length scale associated with the curvature of the spatial manifold. In particular, all Hagedorn growth cancels, and so does the growth $\exp{(V^{1/4} E^{3/4})}$ expected in a standard local 4d theory in spatial volume $V$. In these ways, large $N$ adjoint QCD, a manifestly non-supersymmetric theory, acts similarly to supersymmetric theories. We also show that at large $N$, the vacuum energy of multi-flavor adjoint QCD is non-negative and exponentially small compared to the UV cutoff with several natural regulators.

Interpolating Between $CP(N-1)$ and $S^{2N-1}$ Target Spaces

Some magnetic phenomena in correlated electron systems were recently shown to be described in the continuum limit by a class of sigma models which present a U(1) Hopf fibration over CP(1). In this paper we study a generalization of such models with a target space given by a U(1) fibration over Grassmannian manifolds, of which CP($N-1$) is a special case. The metric of our target space is shown to be left-symmetric which implies that it is fully parametrized by two constants: the first one -- the conventional coupling constant -- is responsible for the overall scale while the second constant $κ$ parametrizes the strength of a deformation. In two dimensions these sigma models are perturbatively renormalizable. We calculate their $β$ functions to two loops and find the RG flow of the coupling constants. We calculate the two-point function in the UV limit, which has a power law dependence with an exponent dependent on the RG trajectory.

On Grassmannian Heterotic Sigma Model

We study the non-minimal supersymmetric heterotically deformed $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ sigma model with the Grassmannian target space $\mathcal{G}_{M,N}$. To develop the appropriate superfield formalism, we begin with a simplified model with flat target space, find its beta function up to two loops, and prove a non-renormalization theorem. Then we generalize the results to the full model with the Grassmannian target space. Using the geometric formulation, we calculate the beta functions and discuss the 't Hooft and Veneziano limits.

Comments on the NSVZ $β$ Functions in Two-dimensional $\mathcal N=(0,2)$ Supersymmetric Models

The NSVZ $β$ functions in two-dimensional $\mathcal N=(0,2)$ supersymmetric models are revisited. We construct and discuss a broad class of such models using the gauge formulation. All of them represent direct analogs of four-dimensional ${\mathcal N} =1$ Yang-Mills theories and are free of anomalies. Following the same line of reasoning as in four dimensions we distinguish between the holomorphic and canonical coupling constants. This allows us to derive the exact two-dimensional $β$ functions in all models from the above class. We then compare our results with a few examples which have been studied previously.

Heterotically Deformed Sigma Models on the World Sheet of Semilocal Strings in SQED

A new two dimensional $\mathcal{N}=(0,2)$ Supersymmetric Non-Linear Sigma Model describes the dynamics of internal moduli of the BPS semi-local vortex string supported in four dimensional $\mathcal{N}=2$ SQED. While the core of these strings is very similar to Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen vortices, they are defined with a characteristic size modulus, much like the instanton lump size. This entails that the constituting fields of the vortex do not decay exponentially, as one goes far away from the core of the string, but as a rational function. The appearance of an extra scale in the problem also allows for an explicit, analytic, approximate solution to be written for the BPS equation, surprisingly. Despite the conceptually large differences between semi-local and non-Abelian vortices, it appears that the moduli structures have one main common feature, both undergo the same kind of heterotic deformation when a supersymmetry breaking potential term is added to the spacetime theory, moving from $\mathcal{N}=2$ to $\mathcal{N}=1$. By adding a mass term for the gauge scalar multiplet, a heterotic deformation develops on the worldsheet, which breaks supersymmetry down to $(0,2)$ by coupling supertranslational fermionic zero modes to supersize ones. Such an interaction between zero modes of two different sectors was already hypothesized and subsequently found for non-Abelian strings, providing a neat way of circumventing accidental supersymmetry enhancement via Zumino's theorem. We find that, for small values of the spacetime mass term, an entirely analogous term develops on the worldsheet of semi-local strings.

Principal Chiral Model in Correlated Electron Systems

We discuss noncollinear magnetic phenomena whose local order parameter is characterized by more than one spin vector. By focusing on the simple cases of 2D triangular and 3D pyrochlore lattices, we demonstrate that their low-energy theories can be described by a one-parametric class of sigma models continuously interpolating between the classical Heisenberg model and the principal chiral model ${\rm Tr} \,\left( \partial_a U \partial_a U^\dagger\right)$ for all $U\in \text{SU}(2)$. The target space can be viewed as a U$(1)$ fibration over the $CP(1)$ space. The 3D version of our model is further generalized to break spatial and spin rotation symmetry $\text{SO}(3) \times \text{SO}(3) \to \text{SO}(3)$.

Patterns of Symmetry Breaking in Chiral "QCD"

We consider $SU(N)$ Yang-Mills theory with massless chiral fermions in a complex representation of the gauge group. The main emphasis is on the so-called hybrid psi-chi-eta model. The possible patterns of realization of the continuous chiral flavor symmetry are discussed. We argue that the chiral symmetry is broken in conjunction with a dynamical Higgsing of the gauge group (complete or partial) by bi-fermion condensates. As a result a color-flavor locked symmetry is preserved. The 't Hooft anomaly matching proceeds via saturation of triangles by massless composite fermions or, in a mixed mode, i.e., also by the "weakly" coupled fermions associated with dynamical Abelianization, supplemented by a number of Nambu-Goldstone mesons. Gauge-singlet condensates are of the multifermion type and, though it cannot be excluded, the chiral symmetry realization via such gauge invariant condensates is more contrived (requires a number of four-fermion condensates simultaneously and, even so, problems remain), and less plausible. We conclude that in the model at hand, chiral flavor symmetry implies dynamical Higgsing by bifermion condensates.
