Venereau polynomials and related fiber bundles

The Venereau polynomials v-n:=y+x^n(xz+y(yu+z^2)), n>= 1, on A4 have all fibers isomorphic to the affine space A3. Moreover, for all n>= 1 the map (v-n, x) : A4 -> A2 yields a flat family of affine planes over A2. In the present note we show that over the punctured plane A2\0, this family is a fiber bundle. This bundle is trivial if and only if v-n is a variable of the ring C[x][y,z,u] over C[x]. It is an open question whether v1 and v2 are variables of the polynomial ring C[x,y,z,u]. S. Venereau established that v-n is indeed a variable of C[x][y,z,u] over C[x] for n>= 3. In this note we give an alternative proof of Venereau's result based on the above equivalence. We also discuss some other equivalent properties, as well as the relations to the Abhyankar-Sathaye Embedding Problem and to the Dolgachev-Weisfeiler Conjecture on triviality of flat families with fibers affine spaces.

New examples of hyperbolic octic surfaces in $\PP^3$

We show that a general small deformation of the union of two general cones in P3 of degree >= 4 is Kobayashi hyperbolic. Hence we obtain new examples of hyperbolic surfaces in P3 of any given degree d>= 8.

Normal affine surfaces with $\bf C^*$-actions

A classification of normal affine surfaces admitting a $\bf C^*$-action was given in the work of Białynicki-Birula, Fieseler and L. Kaup, Orlik and Wagreich, Rynes and others. We provide a simple alternative description of such surfaces in terms of their graded rings as well as by defining equations. This is based on a generalization of the Dolgachev-Pinkham-Demazure construction in the case of a hyperbolic grading. As an apllication we determine the structure of singularities, of the orbits and the divisor class groups for such surfaces.

Constructing low degree hyperbolic surfaces in P^3

We describe a new method of constructing Kobayashi-hyperbolic surfaces in complex projective 3-space based on deforming surfaces with a "hyperbolic non-percolation" property. We use this method to show that general small deformations of certain singular abelian surfaces of degree 8 are hyperbolic. We also show that a union of 15 planes in general position in projective 3-space admits hyperbolic deformations.

Rational curves and rational singularities

We study rational curves on algebraic varieties, especially on normal affine varieties endowed with a $\C^*$-action. For varieties with an isolated singularity, we show that the presence of sufficiently many rational curves outside the singular point strongly affects the character of the singularity. This provides an explanation of classical results due to H.A. Schwartz and G.H. Halphen on polynomial solutions of the generalized Fermat equation.

Hyperbolic hypersurfaces in P^n of Fermat-Waring type

In this note we show that there are algebraic families of hyperbolic, Fermat-Waring type hypersurfaces in P^n of degree 4(n-1)^2, for all dimensions n>1. Moreover, there are hyperbolic Fermat-Waring hypersurfaces in P^n of degree 4n^2-2n+1 possessing complete hyperbolic, hyperbolically embedded complements.

Log-canonical forms and log canonical singularities

For a normal subvariety $V$ of ${\bf C}^n$ with a good ${\bf C}^*$-action we give a simple characterization for when it has only log canonical, log terminal or rational singularities. Moreover we are able to give formulas for the plurigenera of isolated singular points of such varieties and of the logarithmic Kodaira dimension of $V\backslash \{0\}$. For this purpose we introduce sheaves of $m$-canonical and $L^{2,m}$-canonical forms on normal complex spaces. For the case of affine varieties with good ${\bf C}^*$-action we give an explicit formula for these sheaves in terms of the grading of the dualizing sheaf and its tensor powers.

Two classes of hyperbolic surfaces in P^3

We construct two classes of singular Kobayashi hyperbolic surfaces in $P^3$. The first consists of generic projections of the cartesian square $V = C \times C$ of a generic genus $g \ge 2$ curve $C$ smoothly embedded in $P^5$. These surfaces have C-hyperbolic normalizations; we give some lower bounds for their degrees and provide an example of degree 32. The second class of examples of hyperbolic surfaces in $P^3$ is provided by generic projections of the symmetric square $V' = C_2$ of a generic genus $g \ge 3$ curve $C$. The minimal degree of these surfaces is 16, but this time the normalizations are not C-hyperbolic.

Affine modifications and affine hypersurfaces with a very transitive automorphism group

We study a kind of modification of an affine domain which produces another affine domain. First appeared in passing in the basic paper of O. Zariski (1942), it was further considered by E.D. Davis (1967). The first named author applied its geometric counterpart to construct contractible smooth affine varieties non-isomorphic to Euclidean spaces. Here we provide certain conditions which guarantee preservation of the topology under a modification. As an application, we show that the group of biregular automorphisms of the affine hypersurface $X \subset C^{k+2}$ given by the equation $uv=p(x_1,...,x_k)$ where $p \in C[x_1,...,x_k],$ acts $m-$transitively on the smooth part reg$X$ of $X$ for any $m \in N.$ We present examples of such hypersurfaces diffeomorphic to Euclidean spaces.

Liouville and Carathéodory coverings in Riemannian and complex geometry

A Riemannian manifold resp. a complex space $X$ is called Liouville if it carries no nonconstant bounded harmonic resp. holomorphic functions. It is called Carathéodory, or Carathéodory hyperbolic, if bounded harmonic resp. holomorphic functions separate the points of $X$. The problems which we discuss in this paper arise from the following question: When a Galois covering $X$ with Galois group $G$ over a Liouville base $Y$ is Liouville or, at least, is not Carathéodory hyperbolic?

A representation of isometries on function spaces

The main result says that every surjective isometry between two ideal Banach function spaces satisfying certain conditions can be presented as a composition of a measurable transformation of a variable and multiplication by a function.

On isometric reflexions in Banach spaces

We obtain the following characterization of Hilbert spaces. Let $E$ be a Banach space whose unit sphere $S$ has a hyperplane of symmetry. Then $E$ is a Hilbert space iff any of the following two conditions is fulfilled: a) the isometry group ${\rm Iso}\, E$ of $E$ has a dense orbit in S; b) the identity component $G_0$ of the group ${\rm Iso}\, E$ endowed with the strong operator topology acts topologically irreducible on $E$. Some related results on infinite dimentional Coxeter groups generated by isometric reflexions are given which allow to analyse the structure of isometry groups containing sufficiently many reflexions.

A rearrangement invariant space isometric to $L_p$ coincides with $L_p$

The following theorem is the main result of this note. Theorem 1. Let $(E, \|\cdot\|_E) $ be a rearrangement invariant Banach function space on the interval $[0, 1]$. If $E$ is isometric to $Ł_p [0, 1]$ for some $1\le p<\infty$, then $E$ coincides with $Ł_p [0, 1]$ and furthermore $\|\cdot\|_E = λ\|\cdot\|_{Ł_p}$, where $λ= \|{\bf 1}\|_E$.

On exotic algebraic structures on affine spaces

By an exotic algebraic structure on the affine space ${\bf C}^n$ we mean a smooth affine algebraic variety which is diffeomorphic to ${\bf R}^{2n}$ but not isomorphic to ${\bf C}^n$. This is a survey of the recent developement on the subject, which emphasizes its analytic aspects and points out some open problems.
