Critical bifurcation and deconfined quantum criticality in an interacting cluster Ising chain

We investigate the cluster Ising chain with an additional nearest-neighbor interaction using tensor-network methods and a weak-coupling field theory. Without the interaction, the Jordan-Wigner transformation decomposes the model into a triplet of identical Majorana chains related by an exact $O(3)$ flavor symmetry. Their common mass vanishes at the $SU(2)_2$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten critical point with central charge $c = 3/2$ separating the symmetry-protected topological cluster phase from a ferromagnet. The interaction reduces $O(3)$ to its cyclic subgroup $C_3$, splitting the triplet into a singlet and a doublet whose gaps close separately, producing a critical bifurcation into Ising ($c = 1/2$) and Gaussian ($c = 1$) critical lines. A second ferromagnetic phase opens between these critical lines for repulsive interactions and a disordered phase for attractive ones. The Gaussian line then separates two Landau-incompatible ferromagnets, realizing a deconfined quantum critical line with emergent $O(2)$ symmetry, along which our independently extracted exponents vary continuously yet satisfy the parameter-free relation $β= (2ν- 1)/4$ of the eight-vertex weak universality class. At stronger repulsion this line opens into an extended gapless floating phase with incommensurate algebraic correlations, entered through Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions. All of these phases and the transitions between them are captured by the weak-coupling theory. Beyond its regime of validity, our simulations reveal a translation-symmetry-breaking antiferromagnet reached through first-order transitions.

Information transport and transport-induced entanglement in open fermion chains

Understanding the entanglement dynamics in quantum many-body systems under steady-state transport conditions is an actively pursued challenging topic. Hydrodynamic equations, akin to transport equations for charge or heat, would be of great interest but face severe challenges because of the inherent nonlocality of entanglement and the difficulty of identifying conservation laws. We show that progress is facilitated by using information as key quantity related to - but distinct from - entanglement. Employing the recently developed "information lattice" framework, we formulate general continuity equations governing the flow of spatially and scale-resolved information currents in nonequilibrium open quantum systems. To illustrate our theory, we consider noninteracting fermion chains coupled to dissipative reservoirs, using Lindblad master equations. By relating the information lattice to a noise lattice constructed from particle-number fluctuations, we show that information is experimentally accessible via noise measurements. Similarly, local information currents can be obtained by measuring particle currents, onsite occupations, and covariances of particle numbers and/or particle currents. Using the fermionic negativity to quantify bipartite entanglement, we also study transport-induced entanglement and its relation to information currents. For a clean particle-hole symmetric chain, we find that information currents are shielded from entering the information lattice. Impurities or particle-hole asymmetry break this effect, causing information current flow and entanglement between end segments of the chain. Our work opens the door to systematic investigations of information transport and entanglement generation in driven open quantum systems far from equilibrium.

Emergent superconformal symmetry in the phase diagram of a 1D $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ lattice gauge theory

We investigate the phase diagram and critical properties of a one-dimensional $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ lattice gauge theory describing an orthogonal metal, where spinless fermions and Ising spins are minimally coupled to a deconfined $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ gauge field. Working at half-filling of fermions, we derive an exact gauge-invariant formulation that maps the model onto decoupled XXZ and transverse-field Ising chains. This mapping enables a controlled low-energy field-theory description in terms of a perturbed Luttinger liquid and Ising conformal field theories. Combining analytical arguments with numerical simulations, we determine the full phase diagram and identify various critical and multi-critical regimes. Along a specific multi-critical line, where the fermionic and bosonic velocities coincide, we find strong evidence for an emergent superconformal symmetry. Our results establish a minimal lattice realization of emergent superconformal criticalities in a gauge-matter system and provide a route toward its exploration in quantum simulators.

From Kardar-Parisi-Zhang scaling to soliton proliferation in Josephson junction arrays

We propose Josephson junction arrays as realistic platforms for observing nonequilibrium scaling laws characterizing the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality class, and space-time soliton proliferation. Focusing on a two-chain ladder geometry, we perform numerical simulations for the roughness function. Together with analytical arguments, our results predict KPZ scaling at intermediate time scales, extending over sufficiently long time scales to be observable, followed by a crossover to the asymptotic long-time regime governed by soliton proliferation.

Entanglement enhancement induced by noise in inhomogeneously monitored systems

We study how stronger noise can enhance the entanglement in inhomogeneously monitored quantum systems. We consider a free fermions model composed of two coupled chains - a system chain and an ancilla chain, each subject to its own different noise - and explore the dynamics of entanglement within the system chain under different noise intensities. Our results demonstrate that, contrary to the detrimental effects typically associated with noise, certain regimes of noise on the ancilla can significantly enhance entanglement within the system. Numerical simulations demonstrate the robustness of such entanglement enhancement across various system sizes and noise parameters. This enhancement is found to be highly dependent on the hopping strength in the ancilla, suggesting that the interplay between unitary dynamics and noise can be tuned to optimize the entanglement of a quantum system.

Measurement induced transitions in non-Markovian free fermion ladders

Recently there has been an intense effort to understand measurement induced transitions, but we still lack a good understanding of non-Markovian effects on these phenomena. To that end, we consider two coupled chains of free fermions, one acting as the system of interest, and one as a bath. The bath chain is subject to Markovian measurements, resulting in an effective non-Markovian dissipative dynamics acting on the system chain which is still amenable to numerical studies in terms of quantum trajectories. Within this setting, we study the entanglement within the system chain, and use it to characterize the phase diagram depending on the ladder hopping parameters and on the measurement probability. For the case of pure state evolution, the system is in an area law phase when the internal hopping of the bath chain is small, while a non-area law phase appears when the dynamics of the bath is fast. The non-area law exhibits a logarithmic scaling of the entropy compatible with a conformal phase, but also displays linear corrections for the finite system sizes we can study. For the case of mixed state evolution, we instead observe regions with both area, and non-area scaling of the entanglement negativity. We quantify the non-Markovianity of the system chain dynamics and find that for the regimes of parameters we study, a stronger non-Markovianity is associated to a larger entanglement within the system.

Diagrammatic method for many-body non-Markovian dynamics: memory effects and entanglement transitions

We study the quantum dynamics of a many-body system subject to coherent evolution and coupled to a non-Markovian bath. We propose a technique to unravel the non-Markovian dynamics in terms of quantum jumps, a connection that was so far only understood for single-body systems. We develop a systematic method to calculate the probability of a quantum trajectory, and formulate it in a diagrammatic structure. We find that non-Markovianity renormalizes the probability of realizing a quantum trajectory, and that memory effects can be interpreted as a perturbation on top of the Markovian dynamics. We show that the diagrammatic structure is akin to that of a Dyson equation, and that the probability of the trajectories can be calculated analytically. We then apply our results to study the measurement-induced entanglement transition in random unitary circuits. We find that non-Markovianity does not significantly shift the transition, but stabilizes the volume law phase of the entanglement by shielding it from transient strong dissipation.

Emergence of non-Abelian SU(2) invariance in Abelian frustrated fermionic ladders

We consider a system of interacting spinless fermions on a two-leg triangular ladder with $π/2$ magnetic flux per triangular plaquette. Microscopically, the system exhibits a U(1) symmetry corresponding to the conservation of total fermionic charge, and a discrete $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry -- a product of parity transformation and chain permutation. Using bosonization, we show that, in the low-energy limit, the system is described by the quantum double-frequency sine-Gordon model. On the basis of this correspondence, a rich phase diagram of the system is obtained. It includes trivial and topological band insulators for weak interactions, separated by a Gaussian critical line, whereas at larger interactions a strongly correlated phase with spontaneously broken $\mathbb{Z}_2$ symmetry sets in, exhibiting a net charge imbalance and non-zero total current. At the intersection of the three phases, the system features a critical point with an emergent SU(2) symmetry. This non-Abelian symmetry, absent in the microscopic description, is realized at low-energies as a combined effect of the magnetic flux, frustration, and many-body correlations. The criticality belongs to the SU(2)$_1$ Wess-Zumino-Novikov-Witten universality class. The critical point bifurcates into two Ising critical lines that separate the band insulators from the strong-coupling symmetry broken phase. We establish an analytical connection between the low-energy description of our model around the critical bifurcation point on one hand, and the Ashkin-Teller model and a weakly dimerized XXZ spin-1/2 chain on the other. We complement our field-theory understanding via tensor network simulations, providing compelling quantitative evidences of all bosonization predictions. Our findings are of interest to up-to-date cold atom experiments utilizing Rydberg dressing, that have already demonstrated correlated ladder dynamics.

Phase diagram of Rydberg-dressed atoms on two-leg triangular ladders

Dressed Rydberg atoms in optical lattices are a promising platform for the quantum simulation of intriguing phenomena emerging in strongly interacting systems. Relevant to such a setup, we investigate the phase diagram of hard-core bosons in a triangular ladder with next-to-nearest-neighbor interaction along each leg and nearest-neighbors interactions without hopping between the legs. For weak interactions, Abelian bosonization predicts a spin density wave and a fully gapless Luttinger liquid phase. Such liquids transition to a 'spin-locked' cluster Luttinger liquid at strong interactions along each leg, as predicted by cluster bosonization. Interestingly, the competition with the zigzag interaction generates a charge density wave, a 'polarized holonic' phase, and a crystalline phase at the filling 2/5, that we address via semi-classical perturbative approach. Exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group simulations confirm the predictions and further characterize the phases and their transitions.

Phase diagram of Rydberg-dressed atoms on two-leg square ladders: Coupling supersymmetric conformal field theories on the lattice

We investigate the phase diagram of hard-core bosons in two-leg ladders in the presence of soft-shoulder potentials. We show how the competition between local and non-local terms gives rise to a phase diagram with liquid phases with dominant cluster, spin-, and density-wave quasi-long-range ordering. These phases are separated by Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless, Gaussian, and supersymmetric (SUSY) quantum critical transitions. For the latter, we provide a phenomenological description of coupled SUSY conformal field theories, whose predictions are confirmed by matrix-product state simulations. Our results are motivated by, and directly relevant to, recent experiments with Rydberg-dressed atoms in optical lattices, where ladder dynamics has already been demonstrated, and emphasize the capabilities of these setups to investigate exotic quantum phenomena such as cluster liquids and coupled SUSY conformal field theories.
