Extended FLRW Models: dynamical cancellation of cosmological anisotropies

We investigate a corner of the Bianchi models that has not received much attention: "extended FLRW models" (eFLRW) defined as a cosmological model with underlying anisotropic Bianchi geometry that nevertheless expands isotropically and can be mapped onto a reference FLRW model with the same expansion history. In order to investigate the stability and naturalness of such models in a dynamical systems context, we consider spatially homogeneous models that contain a massless scalar field $φ$ and a non-tilted perfect fluid obeying an equation of state $p=wρ$. Remarkably, we find that matter anisotropies and geometrical anisotropies tend to cancel out dynamically. Hence, the expansion is asymptotically isotropic under rather general conditions. Although extended FLRW models require a special matter sector with anisotropies that are 'fine-tuned" relative to geometrical anisotropies, our analysis shows that such solutions are dynamically preferred attractors in general relativity. Specifically, we prove that all locally rotationally symmetric Bianchi type III universes with space-like $\nabla_μφ$ are asymptotically shear-free, for all $w\in[-1,1]$. Moreover, all shear-free equilibrium sets with anisotropic spatial curvature are proved to be stable with respect to all homogeneous perturbations for $w\geq -1/3$.

Bianchi models with a free massless scalar field: invariant sets and higher symmetries

We scrutinize the overall structure of the space of cosmological models of Bianchi type I-VII$_h$ that contain a free massless scalar field, with a spatially homogeneous gradient $\nabla_μφ$ that generally breaks isotropy, in addition to a standard perfect fluid. Specifically, state space is written as a union of disjoint invariant sets, each corresponding to a particular cosmological model that is classified with respect to the Bianchi type and the matter content. Subsets corresponding to higher-symmetry models, including all locally rotationally symmetric models and FLRW models, and models with a shear-free normal congruence, are also derived and classified. For each model the dimension ($d$) of the space of initial data is given, after fixing the orientation of the orthonormal frame uniquely relative to matter anisotropies and geometrical anisotropies.

A study of inhomogeneous massless scalar gauge fields in cosmology

Why is the Universe so homogeneous and isotropic? We summarize a general study of a $γ$-law perfect fluid alongside an inhomogeneous, massless scalar gauge field (with homogeneous gradient) in anisotropic spaces with General Relativity. The anisotropic matter sector is implemented as a $j$-form (field-strength level), where $j\,\in\,\{1,3\}$, and the spaces studied are Bianchi space-times of solvable type. Wald's no-hair theorem is extended to include the $j$-form case. We highlight three new self-similar space-times: the Edge, the Rope and Wonderland. The latter solution is so far found to exist in the physical state space of types I,II, IV, VI$_0$, VI$_h$, VII$_0$ and VII$_h$, and is a global attractor in I and V. The stability analysis of the other types has not yet been performed. This paper is a summary of ~[1], with some remarks towards new results which will be further laid out in upcoming work.

Bianchi cosmologies with $p$-form gauge fields

In this paper the dynamics of free gauge fields in Bianchi type I-VII$_{h}$ space-times is investigated. The general equations for a matter sector consisting of a $p$-form field strength ($p\,\in\,\{1,3\}$), a cosmological constant ($4$-form) and perfect fluid in Bianchi type I-VII$_{h}$ space-times are computed using the orthonormal frame method. The number of independent components of a $p$-form in all Bianchi types I-IX are derived and, by means of the dynamical systems approach, the behaviour of such fields in Bianchi type I and V are studied. Both a local and a global analysis are performed and strong global results regarding the general behaviour are obtained. New self-similar cosmological solutions appear both in Bianchi type I and Bianchi type V, in particular, a one-parameter family of self-similar solutions,"Wonderland ($λ$)" appears generally in type V and in type I for $λ=0$. Depending on the value of the equation of state parameter other new stable solutions are also found ("The Rope" and "The Edge") containing a purely spatial field strength that rotates relative to the co-moving inertial tetrad. Using monotone functions, global results are given and the conditions under which exact solutions are (global) attractors are found.

Balancing Anisotropic Curvature with Gauge Fields in a Class of Shear-Free Cosmological Models

We present a complete list of general relativistic shear-free solutions in a class of anisotropic, spatially homogeneous and orthogonal cosmological models containing a collection of $n$ independent $p$-form gauge fields, where $p\in\{0,1,2,3\}$, in addition to standard $Λ$CDM matter fields modelled as perfect fluids. Here a (collection of) gauge field(s) balances anisotropic spatial curvature on the right-hand side of the shear propagation equation. The result is a class of solutions dynamically equivalent to standard FLRW cosmologies, with an effective curvature constant $K_{\rm{eff}}$ that depends both on spatial curvature and the energy density of the gauge field(s). In the case of a single gauge field ($n=1$) we show that the only spacetimes that admit such solutions are the LRS Bianchi type III, Bianchi type VI$_0$ and Kantowski-Sachs metric, which are dynamically equivalent to open ($K_{\rm{eff}}<0$), flat ($K_{\rm{eff}}=0$) and closed ($K_{\rm{eff}}>0$) FLRW models, respectively. With a collection of gauge fields ($n>1$) also Bianchi type II admits a shear-free solution ($K_{\rm{eff}}>0$). We identify the LRS Bianchi type III solution to be the unique shear-free solution with a gauge field Hamiltonian bounded from below in the entire class of models.

Local Observables in a Landscape of Infrared Gauge Modes

Cosmological local observables are at best statistically determined by the fundamental theory describing inflation. When the scalar inflaton is coupled uniformly to a collection of subdominant massless gauge vectors, rotational invariance is obeyed locally. However, the statistical isotropy of fluctuations is spontaneously broken by gauge modes whose wavelength exceed our causal horizon. This leads to a landscape picture where primordial correlators depend on the position of the observer. We compute the stochastic corrections to the curvature power spectrum, show the existence of a new local observable (the shape of the quadrupole), and constrain the theory using Planck limits.

Statistics of Anisotropies in Inflation with Spectator Vector Fields

We study the statistics of the primordial power spectrum in models where massless gauge vectors are coupled to the inflaton, paying special attention to observational implications of having fundamental or effective horizons embedded in a bath of infrared fluctuations. As quantum infrared modes cross the horizon, they classicalize and build a background vector field. We find that the vector experiences a statistical precession phenomenon. Implications for primordial correlators and the interpretation thereof are considered. Firstly, we show how in general two, not only one, additional observables, a quadrupole amplitude and an intrinsic shape parameter, are necessary to fully describe the correction to the curvature power spectrum, and develop a unique parametrization for them. Secondly, we show that the observed anisotropic amplitude and the associated preferred direction depend on the volume of the patch being probed. We calculate non-zero priors for the expected deviations between detections based on microwave background data (which probes the entire Hubble patch) and large scale structure (which only probes a fraction of it).

Stability of Horndeski vector-tensor interactions

We study the Horndeski vector-tensor theory that leads to second order equations of motion and contains a non-minimally coupled abelian gauge vector field. This theory is remarkably simple and consists of only 2 terms for the vector field, namely: the standard Maxwell kinetic term and a coupling to the dual Riemann tensor. Furthermore, the vector sector respects the U(1) gauge symmetry and the theory contains only one free parameter, M^2, that controls the strength of the non-minimal coupling. We explore the theory in a de Sitter spacetime and study the presence of instabilities and show that it corresponds to an attractor solution in the presence of the vector field. We also investigate the cosmological evolution and stability of perturbations in a general FLRW spacetime. We find that a sufficient condition for the absence of ghosts is M^2>0. Moreover, we study further constraints coming from imposing the absence of Laplacian instabilities. Finally, we study the stability of the theory in static and spherically symmetric backgrounds (in particular, Schwarzschild and Reissner-Nordström-de Sitter). We find that the theory, quite generally, do have ghosts or Laplacian instabilities in regions of spacetime where the non-minimal interaction dominates over the Maxwell term. We also calculate the propagation speed in these spacetimes and show that superluminality is a quite generic phenomenon in this theory.

Quintessence with Kaluza-Klein type couplings to matter and an isotropy-violating vector field

We study the dynamics of a scalar field with Kaluza-Klein type couplings to cold dark matter and an isotropy-violating vector field. The vector coupling, $f^2(ϕ)F^2$, has been studied thoroughly in the context of inflation recently. We generalize the model to a dark energy context and study the cosmological consequences. We find a rich set of exact anisotropic power-law solutions and identify a strong vector coupling regime where the anisotropy is controllable and all solutions are close to the LCDM limit.

Cosmologies in Horndeski's second-order vector-tensor theory

Horndeski derived a most general vector-tensor theory in which the vector field respects the gauge symmetry and the resulting dynamical equations are of second order. The action contains only one free parameter, $λ$, that determines the strength of the non-minimal coupling between the gauge field and gravity. We investigate the cosmological consequences of this action and discuss observational constraints. For $λ<0$ we identify singularities where the deceleration parameter diverges within a finite proper time. This effectively rules out any sensible cosmological application of the theory for a negative non-minimal coupling. We also find a range of parameter that gives a viable cosmology and study the phenomenology for this case. Observational constraints on the value of the coupling are rather weak since the interaction is higher-order in space-time curvature.

Cosmology of a Scalar Field Coupled to Matter and an Isotropy-Violating Maxwell Field

Motivated by the couplings of the dilaton in four-dimensional effective actions, we investigate the cosmological consequences of a scalar field coupled both to matter and a Maxwell-type vector field. The vector field has a background isotropy-violating component. New anisotropic scaling solutions which can be responsible for the matter and dark energy dominated epochs are identified and explored. For a large parameter region the universe expands almost isotropically. Using that the CMB quadrupole is extremely sensitive to shear, we constrain the ratio of the matter coupling to the vector coupling to be less than 10^(-5). Moreover, we identify a large parameter region, corresponding to a strong vector coupling regime, yielding exciting and viable cosmologies close to the LCDM limit.

Inflation with stable anisotropic hair: is it cosmologically viable?

Recently an inflationary model with a vector field coupled to the inflaton was proposed and the phenomenology studied for the Bianchi type I spacetime. It was found that the model demonstrates a counter-example to the cosmic no-hair theorem since there exists a stable anisotropically inflationary fix-point. One of the great triumphs of inflation, however, is that it explains the observed flatness and isotropy of the universe today without requiring special initial conditions. Any acceptable model for inflation should thus explain these observations in a satisfactory way. To check whether the model meets this requirement, we introduce curvature to the background geometry and consider axisymmetric spacetimes of Bianchi type II,III and the Kantowski-Sachs metric. We show that the anisotropic Bianchi type I fix-point is an attractor for the entire family of such spacetimes. The model is predictive in the sense that the universe gets close to this fix-point after a few e-folds for a wide range of initial conditions. If inflation lasts for N e-folds, the curvature at the end of inflation is typically of order exp(-2N). The anisotropy in the expansion rate at the end of inflation, on the other hand, while being small on the one-percent level, is highly significant. We show that after the end of inflation there will be a period of isotropization lasting for about 2N/3 e-folds. After that the shear scales as the curvature and becomes dominant around N e-folds after the end of inflation. For plausible bounds on the reheat temperature the minimum number of e-folds during inflation, required for consistency with the isotropy of the supernova Ia data, lays in the interval (21,48). Thus the results obtained for our restricted class of spacetimes indicates that inflation with anisotropic hair is cosmologically viable.
