Joint RIS Calibration and Multi-User Positioning

Reconfigurable intelligent surfaces (RISs) are expected to be a key component enabling the mobile network evolution towards a flexible and intelligent 6G wireless platform. In most of the research works so far, RIS has been treated as a passive base station (BS) with a known state, in terms of its location and orientation, to boost the communication and/or terminal positioning performance. However, such performance gains cannot be guaranteed anymore when the RIS state is not perfectly known. In this paper, by taking the RIS state uncertainty into account, we formulate and study the performance of a joint RIS calibration and user positioning (JrCUP) scheme. From the Fisher information perspective, we formulate the JrCUP problem in a network-centric single-input multiple-output (SIMO) scenario with a single BS, and derive the analytical lower bound for the states of both user and RIS. We also demonstrate the geometric impact of different user locations on the JrCUP performance while also characterizing the performance under different RIS sizes. Finally, the study is extended to a multi-user scenario, shown to further improve the state estimation performance.

MmWave Mapping and SLAM for 5G and Beyond

Device localization and radar-like mapping are at the heart of integrated sensing and communication, enabling not only new services and applications, but can also improve communication quality with reduced overheads. These forms of sensing are however susceptible to data association problems, due to the unknown relation between measurements and detected objects or targets. In this chapter, we provide an overview of the fundamental tools used to solve mapping, tracking, and simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) problems. We distinguish the different types of sensing problems and then focus on mapping and SLAM as running examples. Starting from the applicable models and definitions, we describe the different algorithmic approaches, with a particular focus on how to deal with data association problems. In particular, methods based on random finite set theory and Bayesian graphical models are introduced in detail. A numerical study with synthetic and experimental data is then used to compare these approaches in a variety of scenarios.

Doppler Exploitation in Bistatic mmWave Radio SLAM

Networks in 5G and beyond utilize millimeter wave (mmWave) radio signals, large bandwidths, and large antenna arrays, which bring opportunities in jointly localizing the user equipment and mapping the propagation environment, termed as simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). Existing approaches mainly rely on delays and angles, and ignore the Doppler, although it contains geometric information. In this paper, we study the benefits of exploiting Doppler in SLAM through deriving the posterior Cramér-Rao bounds (PCRBs) and formulating the extended Kalman-Poisson multi-Bernoulli sequential filtering solution with Doppler as one of the involved measurements. Both theoretical PCRB analysis and simulation results demonstrate the efficacy of utilizing Doppler.

Towards Length-Versatile and Noise-Robust Radio Frequency Fingerprint Identification

Radio frequency fingerprint identification (RFFI) can classify wireless devices by analyzing the signal distortions caused by the intrinsic hardware impairments. State-of-the-art neural networks have been adopted for RFFI. However, many neural networks, e.g., multilayer perceptron (MLP) and convolutional neural network (CNN), require fixed-size input data. In addition, many IoT devices work in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenarios but the RFFI performance in such scenarios is rarely investigated. In this paper, we analyze the reason why MLP- and CNN-based RFFI systems are constrained by the input size. To overcome this, we propose four neural networks that can process signals of variable lengths, namely flatten-free CNN, long short-term memory (LSTM) network, gated recurrent unit (GRU) network and transformer. We adopt data augmentation during training which can significantly improve the model's robustness to noise. We compare two augmentation schemes, namely offline and online augmentation. The results show the online one performs better. During the inference, a multi-packet inference approach is further leveraged to improve the classification accuracy in low SNR scenarios. We take LoRa as a case study and evaluate the system by classifying 10 commercial-off-the-shelf LoRa devices in various SNR conditions. The online augmentation can boost the low-SNR classification accuracy by up to 50% and the multi-packet inference approach can further increase the accuracy by over 20%.

DECT-2020 New Radio: The Next Step Towards 5G Massive Machine-Type Communications

Massive machine type communications (mMTC) is one of the cornerstone services that have to be supported by 5G systems. 3GPP has already introduced LTE-M and NB-IoT, often referred to as cellular IoT, in 3GPP Releases 13, 14, and 15 and submitted these technologies as part of 3GPP IMT-2020 (i.e., 5G) technology submission to ITU-R. Even though NB-IoT and LTE-M have shown to satisfy 5G mMTC requirements defined by ITU-R, it is expected that these cellular IoT solutions will not address all aspects of IoT and ongoing digitalization, including the support for direct communication between "things" with flexible deployments, different business models, as well as support for even higher node densities and enhanced coverage. In this paper, we introduce the DECT-2020 standard recently published by ETSI for mMTC communications. We evaluate its performance and compare it to the existing LPWAN solutions showing that it outperforms those in terms of supported density of nodes while still keeping delay and loss guarantees at the required level.

Frequency-domain digital predistortion for Massive MU-MIMO-OFDM Downlink

Digital predistortion (DPD) is a method commonly used to compensate for the nonlinear effects of power amplifiers (PAs). However, the computational complexity of most DPD algorithms becomes an issue in the downlink of massive multi-user (MU) multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM), where potentially up to several hundreds of PAs in the base station (BS) require linearization. In this paper, we propose a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based DPD in the frequency domain, taking place before the precoding, where the dimensionality of the signal space depends on the number of users, instead of the number of BS antennas. Simulation results on generalized memory polynomial (GMP)-based PAs show that the proposed CNN-based DPD can lead to very large complexity savings as the number of BS antenna increases at the expense of a small increase in power to achieve the same symbol error rate (SER).

Flexible fast-convolution processing for cellular radio evolution

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been selected as a baseline waveform for long-term evolution (LTE) and fifth-generation new radio (5G NR). Fast-convolution (FC)-based frequency-domain signal processing has been considered recently as an effective tool for spectrum enhancement of OFDM-based waveforms. FC-based filtering approximates linear convolution by effective fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based circular convolutions using partly overlapping processing blocks. In earlier work, we have shown that FC-based filtering is a very flexible and efficient tool for filtered-OFDM signal generation and receiver side subband filtering. In this paper, we present a symbol-synchronous FC-processing scheme flexibly allowing filter re-configuration time resolution equal to one OFDM symbol while supporting tight carrier-wise filtering for 5G NR in mixed-numerology scenarios with adjustable subcarrier spacings, center frequencies, and subband bandwidths as well as providing co-exitence with LTE. The proposed scheme is demonstrated to support envisioned use cases of 5G NR and provide flexible starting point for sixth generation development.

Millimeter-wave Mobile Sensing and Environment Mapping: Models, Algorithms and Validation

Integrating efficient connectivity, positioning and sensing functionalities into 5G New Radio (NR) and beyond mobile cellular systems is one timely research paradigm, especially at mm-wave and sub-THz bands. In this article, we address the radio-based sensing and environment mapping prospects with specific emphasis on the user equipment (UE) side. We first describe an efficient l1-regularized least-squares (LS) approach to obtain sparse range-angle charts at individual measurement or sensing locations. For the subsequent environment mapping, we then introduce a novel state model for mapping diffuse and specular scattering, which allows efficient tracking of individual scatterers over time using interacting multiple model (IMM) extended Kalman filter and smoother. Also the related measurement selection and data association problems are addressed. We provide extensive numerical indoor mapping results at the 28 GHz band deploying OFDM-based 5G NR uplink waveform with 400 MHz channel bandwidth, covering both accurate ray-tracing based as well as actual RF measurement results. The results illustrate the superiority of the dynamic tracking-based solutions, compared to static reference methods, while overall demonstrate the excellent prospects of radio-based mobile environment sensing and mapping in future mm-wave networks.

Iterated Posterior Linearization PMB Filter for 5G SLAM

5G millimeter wave (mmWave) signals have inherent geometric connections to the propagation channel and the propagation environment. Thus, they can be used to jointly localize the receiver and map the propagation environment, which is termed as simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). One of the most important tasks in the 5G SLAM is to deal with the nonlinearity of the measurement model. To solve this problem, existing 5G SLAM approaches rely on sigma-point or extended Kalman filters, linearizing the measurement function with respect to the prior probability density function (PDF). In this paper, we study the linearization of the measurement function with respect to the posterior PDF, and implement the iterated posterior linearization filter into the Poisson multi-Bernoulli SLAM filter. Simulation results demonstrate the accuracy and precision improvements of the resulting SLAM filter.

Radio Frequency Fingerprint Identification for Security in Low-Cost IoT Devices

Radio frequency fingerprint identification (RFFI) can uniquely classify wireless devices by analyzing the received signal distortions caused by the intrinsic hardware impairments. The state-of-the-art deep learning techniques such as convolutional neural network (CNN) have been adopted to classify IoT devices with high accuracy. However, deep learning-based RFFI requires input data of a fixed size. In addition, many IoT devices work in low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) scenarios but the low SNR RFFI is rarely investigated. In this paper, the state-of-the-art transformer model is used as the classifier, which can process signals of variable length. Data augmentation is adopted to improve low SNR RFFI performance. A multi-packet inference approach is further proposed to improve the classification accuracy in low SNR scenarios. We take LoRa as a case study and evaluate the system by classifying 10 commercial-off-the-shelf LoRa devices in various SNR conditions. The online augmentation can boost the low SNR RFFI performance by up to 50% and multi-packet inference can further increase it by over 20%.

Phase Noise Resilient Three-Level Continuous-Phase Modulation for DFT-Spread OFDM

A novel OFDM-based waveform with low peak-to-average power ratio (PAPR) and high robustness against phase noise (PN) is presented. It follows the discrete Fourier transform spread orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (DFT-s-OFDM) signal model. 3MSK, is inspired by continuous-phase frequency shift keying (FSK), but it uses three frequencies in the baseband model -- specifically, 0 and $\pm f_{symbol}/4$, where $f_{symbol}$ is the symbol rate -- which effectively constrains the phase transitions between consecutive symbols to 0 and $\pm π/2$ rad. Motivated by the phase controlled model of modulation, different degrees of phase continuity can be achieved, while supporting receiver processing with low complexity. The signal characteristics are improved by generating an initial time-domain nearly constant envelope signal at higher than the symbol rate. This helps to reach smooth phase transitions between 3MSK symbols. Also the possibility of using excess bandwidth is investigated by transmitting additional non-zero subcarriers outside active subcarriers of the basic DFT-s-OFDM model, which provides the capability to greatly reduce the PAPR. Due to the fact that the information is encoded in the phase transitions, a receiver model that tracks the phase variations without needing reference signals is developed. To this end, it is shown that this new modulation is well-suited for non-coherent receivers, even under strong phase noise (PN) conditions, thus allowing to reduce the overhead of reference signals. Evaluations of this physical-layer modulation and waveform scheme are performed in terms of transmitter metrics such as PAPR, OOB emissions and achievable output power after the power amplifier (PA). Finally, coded radio link evaluations are also shown and provided, demonstrating that 3MSK has a similar BER performance as that of traditional QPSK.

Beamformer Design and Optimization for Full-Duplex Joint Communication and Sensing at mm-Waves

In this article, we study the joint communication and sensing (JCAS) paradigm in the context of millimeter-wave (mm-wave) mobile communication networks. We specifically address the JCAS challenges stemming from the full-duplex operation and from the co-existence of multiple simultaneous beams for communications and sensing purposes. To this end, we first formulate and solve beamforming optimization problems for hybrid beamforming based multiuser multiple-input and multiple-output JCAS systems. The cost function to be maximized is the beamformed power at the sensing direction while constraining the beamformed power at the communications directions, suppressing interuser interference and cancelling full-duplexing related self-interference (SI). We then also propose new transmitter and receiver beamforming solutions for purely analog beamforming based JCAS systems that maximize the beamforming gain at the sensing direction while controlling the beamformed power at the communications direction(s), cancelling the SI as well as eliminating the potential reflection from the communication direction and optimizing the combined radar pattern (CRP). Both closed-form and numerical optimization based formulations are provided. We analyze and evaluate the performance through extensive simulations, and show that substantial gains and benefits in terms of radar transmit gain, CRP, and SI suppression can be achieved with the proposed beamforming methods.

A Computationally Efficient EK-PMBM Filter for Bistatic mmWave Radio SLAM

Millimeter wave (mmWave) signals are useful for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM), due to their inherent geometric connection to the propagation environment and the propagation channel. To solve the SLAM problem, existing approaches rely on sigma-point or particle-based approximations, leading to high computational complexity, precluding real-time execution. We propose a novel low-complexity SLAM filter, based on the Poisson multi-Bernoulli mixture (PMBM) filter. It utilizes the extended Kalman (EK) first-order Taylor series based Gaussian approximation of the filtering distribution, and applies the track-oriented marginal multi-Bernoulli/Poisson (TOMB/P) algorithm to approximate the resulting PMBM as a Poisson multi-Bernoulli (PMB). The filter can account for different landmark types in radio SLAM and multiple data association hypotheses. Hence, it has an adjustable complexity/performance trade-off. Simulation results show that the developed SLAM filter can greatly reduce the computational cost, while it keeps the good performance of mapping and user state estimation.

Converging Radar and Communications in the Superposition Transmission

This paper proposes a superposition transmission scheme for the future Radio Frequency (RF) convergence applications. The scheme is discussed under the assumption of a mono-static broadcasting channel topology. Under communications quality-of-service (QoS) constraints, the joint performance region of communications sum rate and radar estimation error variance is studied. Two radar signal waveforms, namely linear FM and parabolic FM, are used to investigate how signal shapes may influence the estimation accuracy. Both waveforms are generated with rectangular envelope. In the end, a numerical analysis is applied, which concludes that a moderate communications QoS promises a good communications fairness while with the limited radar performance degradation.

mmWave Simultaneous Localization and Mapping Using a Computationally Efficient EK-PHD Filter

Future cellular networks that utilize millimeter wave signals provide new opportunities in positioning and situational awareness. Large bandwidths combined with large antenna arrays provide unparalleled delay and angle resolution, allowing high accuracy localization but also building up a map of the environment. Even the most basic filter intended for simultaneous localization and mapping exhibits high computational overhead since the methods rely on sigma point or particle-based approximations. In this paper, a first order Taylor series based Gaussian approximation of the filtering distribution is used and it is demonstrated that the developed extended Kalman probability hypothesis density filter is computationally very efficient. In addition, the results imply that efficiency does not come with the expense of estimation accuracy since the method nearly achieves the position error bound.

HybridDeepRx: Deep Learning Receiver for High-EVM Signals

In this paper, we propose a machine learning (ML) based physical layer receiver solution for demodulating OFDM signals that are subject to a high level of nonlinear distortion. Specifically, a novel deep learning based convolutional neural network receiver is devised, containing layers in both time- and frequency domains, allowing to demodulate and decode the transmitted bits reliably despite the high error vector magnitude (EVM) in the transmit signal. Extensive set of numerical results is provided, in the context of 5G NR uplink incorporating also measured terminal power amplifier characteristics. The obtained results show that the proposed receiver system is able to clearly outperform classical linear receivers as well as existing ML receiver approaches, especially when the EVM is high in comparison with modulation order. The proposed ML receiver can thus facilitate pushing the terminal power amplifier (PA) systems deeper into saturation, and thereon improve the terminal power-efficiency, radiated power and network coverage.

Joint Positioning and Tracking via NR Sidelink in 5G-Empowered Industrial IoT: Releasing the Potential of V2X Technology

The fifth generation (5G) mobile networks with enhanced connectivity and positioning capabilities play an increasingly important role in the development of automated vehicle-to-everything (V2X) and other advanced industrial Internet of Things (IoT) systems. In this article, we address the prospects of 5G New Radio (NR) sidelink based V2X networks and their applicability for increasing the situational awareness, in terms of continuous tracking of moving connected machines and vehicles, in industrial systems. For increased system flexibility and fast deployments, we assume that the locations of the so-called anchor nodes are unknown, and describe an extended Kalman filter-based joint positioning and tracking framework in which the locations of both the anchor nodes and the target nodes can be estimated simultaneously. We assess and demonstrate the achievable 3D positioning and tracking performance in the context of a realistic industrial warehouse facility, through extensive ray-tracing based evaluations at the 26 GHz NR band. Our findings show that when both angle-based and time-based measurements are utilized, reaching sub-1 meter accuracy is realistic and that the system is also relatively robust against different node geometries. Finally, several research challenges towards achieving robust, high-performance and cost-efficient positioning solutions are outlined and discussed, identifying various potential directions for future work.

Frequency-Domain Signal Processing for Spectrally-Enhanced CP-OFDM Waveforms in 5G New Radio

Orthogonal frequency-division multiplexing (OFDM) has been selected as the basis for the fifth-generation new radio (5G-NR) waveform developments. However, effective signal processing tools are needed for enhancing the OFDM spectrum in various advanced transmission scenarios. In earlier work, we have shown that fast-convolution (FC) processing is a very flexible and efficient tool for filtered-OFDM signal generation and receiver-side subband filtering, e.g., for the mixed-numerology scenarios of the 5G-NR. FC filtering approximates linear convolution through effective fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based circular convolutions using partly overlapping processing blocks. However, with the continuous overlap-and-save and overlap-and-add processing models with fixed block-size and fixed overlap, the FC-processing blocks cannot be aligned with all OFDM symbols of a transmission frame. Furthermore, 5G-NR numerology does not allow to use transform lengths shorter than 128 because this would lead to non-integer cyclic prefix (CP) lengths. In this article, we present new FC-processing schemes which solve the mentioned limitations. These schemes are based on dynamically adjusting the overlap periods and extrapolating the CP samples, which make it possible to align the FC blocks with each OFDM symbol, even in case of variable CP lengths. This reduces complexity and latency, e.g., in mini-slot transmissions and, as an example, allows to use 16-point transforms in case of a 12-subcarrier-wide subband allocation, greatly reducing the implementation complexity. On the receiver side, the proposed scheme makes it possible to effectively combine cascaded inverse and forward FFT units in FC-filtered OFDM processing. Transform decomposition is used to simplify these computations. Very extensive set of numerical results is also provided, in terms of radio-link performance and associated processing complexity.
