Higgs inflation with the Holst and the Nieh-Yan term

The action of loop quantum gravity includes the Holst term and/or the Nieh-Yan term in addition to the Ricci scalar. These terms are expected to couple non-minimally to the Higgs. Thus the Holst and Nieh-Yan terms contribute to the classical equations of motion, and they can have a significant impact on inflation. We derive inflationary predictions in the parameter space of the non-minimal couplings, including non-minimally coupled terms up to dimension 4. Successful inflation is possible even with zero or negative coupling of the Ricci scalar. Notably, inflation supported by the non-minimally coupled Holst term alone gives almost the same observables as the original metric formulation plateau Higgs inflation. A non-minimally coupled Nieh-Yan term alone cannot give successful inflation. When all three terms are considered, the predictions for the spectral index and tensor-to-scalar ratio span almost the whole range probed by upcoming experiments. This is not true for the running of the spectral index, and many cases are highly tuned.

An octahedron of complex null rays, and conformal symmetry breaking

We show how the manifold $T^*SU(2, 2)$ arises as a symplectic reduction from eight copies of the twistor space. Some of the constraints in the twistor space correspond to an octahedral configuration of twelve complex light rays in the Minkowski space. We discuss a mechanism to break the conformal symmetry down to the twistorial parametrisation of $T^*SL(2, C)$ used in loop quantum gravity.

Twisted geometries, twistors and conformal transformations

The twisted geometries of spin network states are described by simple twistors, isomorphic to null twistors with a time-like direction singled out. The isomorphism depends on the Immirzi parameter, and reduces to the identity when the parameter goes to infinity. Using this twistorial representation we study the action of the conformal group SU(2,2) on the classical phase space of loop quantum gravity, described by twisted geometry. The generators of translations and conformal boosts do not preserve the geometric structure, whereas the dilatation generator does. It corresponds to a 1-parameter family of embeddings of T*SL(2,C) in twistor space, and its action preserves the intrinsic geometry while changing the extrinsic one - that is the boosts among polyhedra. We discuss the implication of this action from a dynamical point of view, and compare it with a discretisation of the dilatation generator of the continuum phase space, given by the Lie derivative of the group character. At leading order in the continuum limit, the latter reproduces the same transformation of the extrinsic geometry, while also rescaling the areas and volumes and preserving the angles associated with the intrinsic geometry. Away from the continuum limit its action has an interesting non-linear structure, but is in general incompatible with the closure constraint needed for the geometric interpretation. As a side result, we compute the precise relation between the extrinsic geometry used in twisted geometries and the one defined in the gauge-invariant parametrization by Dittrich and Ryan, and show that the secondary simplicity constraints they posited coincide with those dynamically derived in the toy model of [1409.0836].

En komprimerad introduktion till slingkvantgravitation och spinnskum modeller

A short introductory review of loop quantum gravity and spinfoam models in Swedish. A small knowledge of general relativity in connection variables is assumed, but an emphasis has been put on giving a self-supporting presentation.

Divergences and Orientation in Spinfoams

We suggest that large radiative corrections appearing in the spinfoam framework might be tied to the implicit sum over orientations. Specifically, we show that in a suitably simplified context the characteristic "spike" divergence of the Ponzano-Regge model disappears when restricting the theory to just one of the two orientations appearing in the asymptotic limit of the vertex amplitude.

Magnetic Monopoles in Noncommutative Space-Time: Second Order of Perturbation

We investigate the validity of the Dirac Quantization Condition (DQC) for magnetic monopoles in noncommutative space-time using an extension of the method used by Wu and Yang. We continue the work started in [1] where it was shown that the DQC can be kept unmodified in the first order of the perturbative expansion in the noncommutativity parameter θ. Here we include second order corrections and find that, in order to find solutions to the noncommutative Maxwell's equations described by the $U_\star(1)$ group, the DQC needs to be modified by perturbative corrections that introduce a dependence on space-time points. Thus the DQC fails to be a topological property of noncommutative space-time. We comment on the possible origin of this difference.

Magnetic Monopole in Noncommutative Space-Time and Wu-Yang Singularity-Free Gauge Transformations

We investigate the validity of the Dirac Quantization Condition (DQC) for magnetic monopoles in noncommutative space-time. We use an approach which is based on an extension of the method introduced by Wu and Yang. To study the effects of noncommutativity of space-time, we consider the gauge transformations of $U_\star(1)$ gauge fields and use the corresponding deformed Maxwell's equations. Using a perturbation expansion in the noncommutativity parameter $θ$, we show that the DQC remains unmodified up to the first order in the expansion parameter. The result is obtained for a class of noncommutative source terms, which reduce to the Dirac delta function in the commutative limit.

On Finite Noncommutativity in Quantum Field Theory

We consider various modifications of the Weyl-Moyal star-product, in order to obtain a finite range of nonlocality. The basic requirements are to preserve the commutation relations of the coordinates as well as the associativity of the new product. We show that a modification of the differential representation of the Weyl-Moyal star-product by an exponential function of derivatives will not lead to a finite range of nonlocality. We also modify the integral kernel of the star-product introducing a Gaussian damping, but find a nonassociative product which remains infinitely nonlocal. We are therefore led to propose that the Weyl-Moyal product should be modified by a cutoff like function, in order to remove the infinite nonlocality of the product. We provide such a product, but it appears that one has to abandon the possibility of analytic calculation with the new product.

Gauge Covariance of the Aharonov-Bohm Phase in Noncommutative Quantum Mechanics

The gauge covariance of the wave function phase factor in noncommutative quantum mechanics (NCQM) is discussed. We show that the naive path integral formulation and an approach where one shifts the coordinates of NCQM in the presence of a background vector potential leads to the gauge non-covariance of the phase factor. Due to this fact, the Aharonov-Bohm phase in NCQM which is evaluated through the path-integral or by shifting the coordinates is neither gauge invariant nor gauge covariant. We show that the gauge covariant Aharonov-Bohm effect should be described by using the noncommutative Wilson lines, what is consistent with the noncommutative Schrödinger equation. This approach can ultimately be used for deriving an analogue of the Dirac quantization condition for the magnetic monopole.
