First-order transition in $XY$ model with higher-order interactions

The effect of inclusion of higher-order interactions in the {\it XY} model on critical properties is studied by Monte Carlo simulations. It is found that an increasing number of the higher-order terms in the Hamiltonian modifies the shape of the potential, which beyond a certain value leads to the change of the nature of the transition from continuous to first order. The evidence for the first-order transition is provided in the form of the finite-size scaling and the energy histogram analysis. A rough phase diagram is presented as a function of the number of the higher-order interaction terms.

$XY$ model with higher-order exchange

An $XY$ model, generalized by inclusion of up to an infinite number of higher-order pairwise interactions with an exponentially decreasing strength, is studied by spin-wave theory and Monte Carlo simulations. At low temperatures the model displays a quasi-long-range order phase characterized by an algebraically decaying correlation function with the exponent $η= T/[2 πJ(p,α)]$, nonlinearly dependent on the parameters $p$ and $α$ that control the number of the higher-order terms and and the decay rate of their intensity, respectively. At higher temperatures the system shows a crossover from the continuous Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless to the first-order transition for the parameter values corresponding to a highly nonlinear shape of the potential well. The role of of topological excitations (vortices) in changing the nature of the transition is discussed.

Ordering phenomena in a heterostructure of frustrated and unfrustrated triangular-lattice Ising layers

We study critical and magnetic properties of a bilayer Ising system consisting of two triangular planes A and B, with the antiferromagnetic (AF) coupling $J_{\rm A}$ and the ferromagnetic (FM) one $J_{\rm B}$ for the respective layers, which are coupled by the interlayer interaction $J_{\rm AB}$ by using Monte Carlo simulations. When $J_{\rm A}$ and $J_{\rm B}$ are of the same order, the unfrustrated FM plane orders first at a high temperature $T_{c1} \sim J_{\rm B}$. The spontaneous FM order then exerts influence on the other frustrated AF plane as an effective magnetic field, which subsequently induces a ferrimagnetic order in this plane at low temperatures below $T_{c2}$. When short-range order is developed in the AF plane while the influence of the FM plane is still small, there appears a preemptive Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless-like pseudocritical crossover regime just above the ferrimagnetic phase transition point, where the short-distance behavior up to a rather large length scale exponentially diverging in $\propto \JA / T$ is controlled by a line of Gaussian fixed points at $T = 0$. In the crossover region, a continuous variation in the effective critical exponent $4/9 \lesssim η^{\rm eff} \lesssim 1/2$ is observed. The phase diagram by changing the ratio $J_{\rm A}/J_{\rm B}$ is also investigated.

Enhanced magnetocaloric effect due to selective dilution in a triangular Ising antiferromagnet

We employ an effective-field theory with correlations in order to study a magnetocaloric effect on a triangular Ising antiferromagnet, which is selectively diluted by non-magnetic impurities on one of the three sublattices. Such a dilution generally relieves massive degeneracy in our system and therefore the ground-state entropy diminishes and the magnetocaloric effect weakens at low temperatures. However, at relatively higher temperatures we can observe significantly enhanced negative isothermal entropy changes for the sublattice concentration $p_{\mathrm{A}} = 0.8$.

Thermodynamic properties of a Hubbard model on a cubic cluster - exact diagonalization study at quarter filling

We study the thermodynamics of a zero-dimensional, cubic cluster described with a Hubbard Hamiltonian, focusing our interest on the magnetic properties. The range in which the studied cluster is paramagnetic is considered. The results are obtained by means of exact numerical diagonalization. Such thermodynamic quantities as entropy, specific heat, magnetic susceptibility, spin-spin correlations and double occupancy are discussed. Particular emphasis is put on the behaviour of local maxima of specific heat and susceptibility, which are analysed in terms of Schottky anomalies.

Frustrated ground states of a generalized XY model and their mapping to non-magnetic structural analogues

Ground state phases of a generalized XY model with magnetic and generalized nematic couplings on a non-bipartite triangular lattice are investigated in the exchange interactions parameter space. We demonstrate that the model displays a number of ordered and quasi-ordered phases as a result of geometrical frustration and/or competition between the magnetic and generalized nematic interactions. The nature and the extent of the respective phases depend on the parameter $q$, characterizing the higher-order harmonics term in the Hamiltonian. Motivated by the recent discovery of the experimental realization of the model with $q=2$ in the seemingly unrelated field of the systems chemistry [A.B. Cairns et al., Nature Chemistry 8, 442 (2016)], the model for $q>2$ is discussed in the context of the prediction of structural phases of a class of bimetalic cyanides based on a mapping between the two systems.

Mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising ferromagnets on a triangular lattice

By Monte Carlo simulations we study critical properties of the mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising model on a triangular lattice, considering two different ways of the spin-value distributions on the three sublattices: $(1/2,1/2,1)$ and $(1/2,1,1)$. In the former case, we find standard Ising universality class phase transitions between paramagnetic and magnetic phases but no phase transitions between two distinct magnetic phases $(\pm 1/2,\pm 1/2,\pm 1)$ and $(\pm 1/2,\pm 1/2,0)$ at any finite temperature, except for some interesting non-critical anomalies displayed by response functions. On the other hand, the latter case turns out to be a rare (or perhaps the only) example of a two-dimensional mixed spin-1/2 and spin-1 Ising model on a standard lattice that displays tricritical behavior.

Thermodynamic and magnetocaloric properties of geometrically frustrated Ising nanoclusters

Thermodynamic and magnetocaloric properties of geometrically frustrated Ising spin clusters of selected shapes and sizes are studied by exact enumeration. In the ground state the magnetization and the entropy show step-wise variations with an applied magnetic field. The number of steps, their widths and heights depend on the cluster shape and size. While the character of the magnetization plateau heights is always increasing, the entropy is not necessarily decreasing function of the field, as one would expect. For selected clusters showing some interesting ground-state properties, the calculations are extended to finite temperatures by exact enumeration of densities of states in the energy-magnetization space. In zero field the focus is laid on a peculiar behavior of some thermodynamic quantities, such as the entropy, the specific heat and the magnetic susceptibility. In finite fields various thermodynamic functions are studied in the temperature-field parameter plane and particular attention is paid to the cases showing an enhanced magnetocaloric effect. The exact results on the finite clusters are compared with the thermodynamic limit behavior obtained from Monte Carlo simulations.

Incommensurate Short-Range Order in $S=1$ Triangular Lattice Ising Antiferromagnet

We study the $S = 1$ triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnet by Monte Carlo simulations. Frustrations between a major antiferromagnetic third-neighbor interaction $J_3$ and a minor ferromagnetic nearest-neighbor interaction $J_1$ cause incommensurate short-range orders at intermediate temperatures. At low temperatures (below $T/J_3 \lesssim 0.2$ for $J_1/J_3 = -1/3$), the system exhibits fourfold periodic ordered state. In the short-range order phase, the system shows a glassy two-step relaxation. We demonstrate that the features of the short-range order are attributed to the cooperation between the frustrations and the nonmagnetic Ising spin states which is a particular feature of the integer spin systems.

Monte Carlo Study of a Spin-3/2 Blume-Emery-Griffiths Model on a Honeycomb Lattice

We study the phase diagram of the spin-3/2 Blume-Emery-Griffiths model on a honeycomb lattice by Monte Carlo simulations in order to verify the presence of some peculiar features predicted by the effective field theory (EFT) with correlations. The locations of the order-disorder phase boundaries are estimated from thermal variations of the magnetic susceptibility curves. It is found that for positive values of the biquadratic interactions the critical boundary shows a discontinuous character as a function of the single-ion anisotropy strength, in line with the EFT expectations. However, for negative values of the biquadratic interactions the step-like variation of the critical frontier predicted by EFT was not reproduced.

A Directional Gradient-Curvature Method for Gap Filling of Gridded Environmental Spatial Data with Potentially Anisotropic Correlations

We introduce the Directional Gradient-Curvature (DGC) method, a novel approach for filling gaps in gridded environmental data. DGC is based on an objective function that measures the distance between the directionally segregated normalized squared gradient and curvature energies of the sample and entire domain data. DGC employs data-conditioned simulations, which sample the local minima configuration space of the objective function instead of the full conditional probability density function. Anisotropy and non-stationarity can be captured by the local constraints and the direction-dependent global constraints. DGC is computationally efficient and requires minimal user input, making it suitable for automated processing of large (e.g., remotely sensed) spatial data sets. Various effects are investigated on synthetic data. The gap-filling performance of DGC is assessed in comparison with established classification and interpolation methods using synthetic and real satellite data, including a skewed distribution of daily column ozone values. It is shown that DGC is competitive in terms of cross validation performance.

Classification of missing values in spatial data using spin models

A problem of current interest is the estimation of spatially distributed processes at locations where measurements are missing. Linear interpolation methods rely on the Gaussian assumption, which is often unrealistic in practice, or normalizing transformations, which are successful only for mild deviations from the Gaussian behavior. We propose to address the problem of missing values estimation on two-dimensional grids by means of spatial classification methods based on spin (Ising, Potts, clock) models. The "spin" variables provide an interval discretization of the process values, and the spatial correlations are captured in terms of interactions between the spins. The spins at the unmeasured locations are classified by means of the "energy matching" principle: the correlation energy of the entire grid (including prediction sites) is estimated from the sample-based correlations. We investigate the performance of the spin classifiers in terms of computational speed, misclassification rate, class histogram and spatial correlations reproduction using simulated realizations of spatial random fields, real rainfall data, and a digital test image. We also compare the spin-based methods with standard classifiers such as the k-nearest neighbor, the fuzzy k-nearest neighbor, and the Support Vector Machine. We find that the spin-based classifiers provide competitive choices.

Dynamics of episodic transient correlations in currency exchange rate returns and their predictability

We study the dynamics of the linear and non-linear serial dependencies in financial time series in a rolling window framework. In particular, we focus on the detection of episodes of statistically significant two- and three-point correlations in the returns of several leading currency exchange rates that could offer some potential for their predictability. We employ a rolling window approach in order to capture the correlation dynamics for different window lengths and analyze the distributions of periods with statistically significant correlations. We find that for sufficiently large window lengths these distributions fit well to power-law behavior. We also measure the predictability itself by a hit rate, i.e. the rate of consistency between the signs of the actual returns and their predictions, obtained from a simple correlation-based predictor. It is found that during these relatively brief periods the returns are predictable to a certain degree and the predictability depends on the selection of the window length.

Critical properties of a spin-1 triangular lattice Ising antiferromagnet

We employ Monte Carlo simulations in order to investigate critical behavior of a geometrically frustrated spin-1 Ising antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice in the presence of a single-ion anisotropy. It has been previously found that long-range order can exist in the isotropic system with a spin larger than some critical value estimated as 11/2. We show that the presence of the single-ion anisotropy can lead to a partial long-range order in the low-temperature region even below this critical value, namely for the spin 1, within a certain range of the anisotropy strength. At higher temperatures we identify another phase of the Berezinsky-Kosterlitz-Thouless type and using a finite-size scaling analysis evaluate the correlation decay exponent. We also study densities of various local spin patterns in the respective phases.

Multilevel Discretized Random Field Models with "Spin" Correlations for the Simulation of Environmental Spatial Data

A problem of practical significance is the analysis of large, spatially distributed data sets. The problem is more challenging for variables that follow non-Gaussian distributions. We show that the spatial correlations between variables can be captured by interactions between "spins". The spins represent multilevel discretizations of the initial field with respect to a number of pre-defined thresholds. The spatial dependence between the "spins" is imposed by means of short-range interactions. We present two approaches, inspired by the Ising and Potts models, that generate conditional simulations from samples with missing data. The simulations of the "spin system" are forced to respect locally the sample values and the system statistics globally. We compare the two approaches in terms of their ability to reproduce the sample statistical properties, to predict data at unsampled locations, as well as in terms of their computational complexity. We discuss the impact of relevant simulation parameters, such as the domain size, the number of discretization levels, and the initial conditions.
