Muon Decay Asymmetries from $K^0_L \to π^0 μ^+ μ^-$ Decays

We have examined the decay $K^0_L \to π^0 μ^+ μ^-$ in which the branching ratio, the muon energy asymmetry and the muon decay asymmetry could be measured. In particular, we find that within the Standard Model the longitudinal polarization ($P_L$) of the muon is proportional to the direct CP violating amplitude. On the other hand the energy asymmetry and the out-of-plane polarization ($P_N$) depend on both indirect and direct CP violating amplitudes. Although the branching ratio is small and difficult to measure because of background, the asymmetries could be large $\cal{O}$(1) in the Standard Model. A combined analysis of the energy asymmetry, $P_L$ and $P_N$ could be used to separate indirect CPV, direct CPV, and CP conserving contributions to the decay.

Tests of the Standard Model Using Muon Polarization Asymmetries in Kaon Decays

We have examined the physics and the experimental feasibility of studying various kaon decay processes in which the polarization of a muon in the final state is measured. Valuable information on CP violation, the quark mixing (CKM) matrix, and new physics can be obtained from such measurements. We have considered muon polarization in K_L to mu+ mu- and K to pi mu+ mu- decays. Although the effects are small, or difficult to measure because of the small branching ratios involved, these studies could provide clean measurements of the CKM parameters. The experimental difficulty appears comparable to the observation of K to pi nu barnu. New sources of physics, involving non-standard CP violation, could produce effects observable in these measurements. Limits from new results on the neutron and electron electric dipole moment, and epsilon-prime over epsilon in neutral kaon decays, do not eliminate certain models that could contribute to the signal. A detailed examination of muon polarization out of the decay plane in KMU3 and radiative KMU2 decays also appears to be of interest. With current kaon beams and detector techniques, it is possible to measure the T-violating polarization for KMU3 with uncertainties approaching 0.0001. This level of sensitivity would provide an interesting probe of new physics.

Observation of the decay $K^+\to π^+ ν\barν$

We have observed 1 event consistent with the signature expected of the rare decay of a positive kaon to a positive pion and a neutrino anti-neutrino pair. In the examined momentum region of 211 to 230 MeV/c in the center of mass of the kaon we estimated the backgrounds to be about $0.08 \pm 0.03$ events. From this observation we estimate the branching ratio to be $4.2^{+9.7}_{-3.5} \times 10^{-10}$. In this presentation I will explain the experiment, and the analysis techniques. I will also discuss the expected improvements in the near future from the analysis of new data sets.

Search for T-violation in kmu3 decay

We have designed a new experiment (E923) at the BNL-AGS to search for the T-violating polarization of the muon normal to the decay plane of the KMU3 decay. The experiment aims to search for T-violation beyond the Standard Model; such a search is motivated by the need for a stronger CP violation source to account for the baryon asymmetry of the Universe. The experiment will be performed with in-flight decays from an intense (2.10e7 K/sec) 2 GeV/c separated K+ beam in an existing beam-line at the AGS. We expect to analyze more than 10e9 events to obtain the sensitivity of (delta P_t = +-0.00013) at 1 sigma, corresponding to the sensitivity of +-0.0007 to Im(xi), an improvement by 40 over the present limit on the same measurement. This paper describes the motivation for this experiment as well as other measurements of the same type. The experimental technique and the sensitivity is also described.

Muon Polarization Working Group Report

We have examined the physics and the experimental feasibility at the AGS of various kaon decay processes in which the polarization of a muon in the final state is measured. Valuable information on CP violation, the CKM matrix or new physics can be obtained with these measurements and therefore they are well motivated. In particular, models of non-standard CP violation that produce the baryon asymmetry of the universe could also produce effects observable in these measurements. Limits from measurements such as the neutron and electron electric dipole moment, and epsilon-prime over epsilon in neutral kaon decays do not eliminate all of these models. We have made a more detailed examination of the measurement of the out of the plane muon polarization in Kmu3 decays. With our current knowledge of the AGS kaon beams and detector techniques it is possible to measure this polarization with an error approaching 10**-4. Such an experiment would be well justified since the sensitivity is well beyond the current direct experimental limit (5.3 times 10**-3) and the projected sensitivity (10**-3) of the currently running experiment at KEK in Japan.
