Solvable relativistic quantum dots with vibrational spectra

For Klein-Gordon equation a consistent physical interpretation of wave functions is reviewed as based on a proper modification of the scalar product in Hilbert space. Bound states are then studied in a deep-square-well model where spectrum is roughly equidistant and where a fine-tuning of the levels is mediated by PT-symmetric interactions composed of imaginary delta functions which mimic creation/annihilation processes.

Unusual scalar products in Hilbert space of Quantum Mechanics: non-Hermitian square-well model with two coupled channels

A pseudo-Hermitian coupled-channel square-well model is proposed, solved and discussed. The domain of parameters is determined where all the bound-state energies (twice degenerate with respect to the second observable which we call "spin") remain real. The standard probabilistic interpretation of the wave functions is achieved by the transition from the original elementary non-physical indefinite pseudo-metric $θ$ to another, more involved but correct positive-definite physical metric $Θ$. In our model the latter step remains comparatively easily feasible. Another fortunate circumstance emerges during the perturbative construction of the metric $Θ$ and, hence, of the correct scalar product and of the physical norm. One finds that at the higher energy levels the influence of all the non-Hermiticities of our model becomes very strongly and progressively suppressed.

Perturbation method for non-square Hamiltonians and its application to polynomial oscillators

A remarkable extension of Rayleigh-Schroedinger perturbation method is found. Its (N+q) x (N+1) - dimensional Hamiltonians (as emerging, e.g., during quasi-exact constructions of bound states) are non-square matrices at q > 1. The role of an eigenvalue is played by an energy/coupling q-plet. In all orders, its perturbations are defined via a q-dimensional inversion.

Solvable PT-symmetric model with a tunable interspersion of non-merging levels

We study the spectrum in such a PT-symmetric square well of a diameter L where the "strength of the non-Hermiticity" is controlled by the two parameters, viz., by an imaginary coupling ig and by the distance d of its onset from the origin. We solve this problem and confirm that the spectrum is discrete and real in a non-empty interval of g. Surprisingly, a specific distinction between the bound states is found in their asymptotic stability/instability with respect to an unlimited growth of g. In our model, all of the low-lying levels remain asymptotically unstable at the small d and finite L while only the stable levels survive for d near L or in the purely imaginary well with infinite L. In between these two extremes, an unusual and tunable, variable pattern of the interspersed "robust" and "fragile" subspectra of the real levels is obtained.

Solvability and PT-symmetry in a double-well model with point interactions

We show that and how point interactions offer one of the most suitable guides towards a quantitative analysis of properties of certain specific non-Hermitian (usually called PT-symmetric) quantum-mechanical systems. A double-well model is chosen, an easy solvability of which clarifies the mechanisms of the unavoided level crossing and of the spontaneous PT-symmetry breaking. The latter phenomenon takes place at a certain natural boundary of the domain of the "acceptable" parameters of the model. Within this domain the model mediates a nice and compact explicit illustration of the not entirely standard probabilistic interpretation of the physical bound states in the very recently developed (so called PT symmetric or, in an alternative terminology, pseudo-Hermitian) new, fairly exciting and very quickly developing branch of Quantum Mechanics.

MHD alpha^2-dynamo, Squire equation and PT-symmetric interpolation between square well and harmonic oscillator

It is shown that the alpha^2-dynamo of Magnetohydrodynamics, the hydrodynamic Squire equation as well as an interpolation model of PT-symmetric Quantum Mechanics are closely related as spectral problems in Krein spaces. For the alpha^2-dynamo and the PT-symmetric model the strong similarities are demonstrated with the help of a 2x2 operator matrix representation, whereas the Squire equation is re-interpreted as a rescaled and Wick-rotated PT-symmetric problem. Based on recent results on the Squire equation the spectrum of the PT-symmetric interpolation model is analyzed in detail and the Herbst limit is described as spectral singularity.

Quantum toboggans

Among all the PT-symmetric potentials defined on complex coordinate contours C(s), the name "quantum toboggan" is reserved for those whose C(s) winds around a singularity and lives on at least two different Riemann sheets. An enriched menu of prospective phenomenological models is then obtainable via the mere changes of variables. We pay thorough attention to the harmonic oscillator example with a fractional screening and emphasize the role of the existence and invariance of its quasi-exact states for different tobogganic C(s).

New types of solvability in PT symmetric quantum theory

The characteristic anti-linear (parity/time reversal, PT) symmetry of non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with real energies is presented as a source of two new forms of solvability of Schrödinger's bound-state problems. In detail we describe (1) their very specific semi-exact solvability (SES) and (2) their innovated variational tractability. SES technicalities are discussed via charged oscillator example. In a broader context, speculations are added concerning possible relationship between PT symmetry, solvability and superintegrability.

Construction of PT-asymmetric non-Hermitian Hamiltonians with CPT-symmetry

Within CPT-symmetric quantum mechanics the most elementary differential form of the charge operator C is assumed. A closed-form integrability of the related coupled differential self-consistency conditions and a natural embedding of the Hamiltonians in a supersymmetric scheme is achieved. For a particular choice of the interactions the rigorous mathematical consistency of the construction is scrutinized suggesting that quantum systems with non-self-adjoint Hamiltonians may admit probabilistic interpretation even in presence of a manifest breakdown of both T symmetry (i.e., Hermiticity) and PT symmetry.

The method of Hill determinants in PT-symmetric quantum mechanics

Hill-determinant method is described and shown applicable within the so called PT-symmetric quantum mechanics. We demonstrate that in a way paralleling its traditional Hermitian applications and proofs the method guarantees the necessary asymptotic decrease of wave functions as resulting from a fine-tuned mutual cancellation of their asymptotically growing exponential components. Technically, the rigorous proof is needed/offered that in a quasi-variational spirit the method allows us to work, in its numerical implementations, with a sequence of truncated forms of the rigorous Hill-determinant power series for the normalizable bound states.

Relativistic supersymmetric quantum mechanics based on Klein-Gordon equation

Witten's non-relativistic formalism of supersymmetric quantum mechanics was based on a factorization and partnership between Schroedinger equations. We show how it accommodates a transition to the partnership between relativistic Klein-Gordon equations. In such a class of models the requirement of supersymmetry is shown to lead to a certain "exceptional-point" instability of ground states.

Pseudo-Hermitian approach to energy-dependent Klein-Gordon models

The relativistic Klein-Gordon system is studied as an illustration of Quantum Mechanics using non-Hermitian operators as observables. A version of the model is considered containing a generic coordinate- and energy-dependent phenomenological mass-term $m^2(E,x)$. We show how similar systems may be assigned a pair of the linear, energy-independent left- and right-acting Hamiltonians with quasi-Hermiticity property and, hence, with the standard probabilistic interpretation.

Partial sums and optimal shifts in shifted large-L perturbation expansions for quasi-exact potentials

Exact solvability (typically, of harmonic oscillators) in quantum mechanics usually implies an elementary form of the spectrum while in all the "next-to-solvable" models, the energies E are only available in an implicit form (typically, as eigenvalues of an N-dimensional matrix). We demonstrate here that certain echoes of the unattainable harmonic-oscillator ideal may still survive in the latter (often called quasi-exact) cases exemplified here by the popular sextic anharmonic oscillator. In particular we show that whenever the spatial dimension D (or, equivalently, angular momentum L) happens to be "sufficiently" large, the surprisingly compact semi-explicit energies E remain available. In detail, using the Rayleigh-Schrödinger perturbation theory in its appropriate "shifted-L" version we observe that: (1) all the k-th order approximants $E_k$ remain defined in integer arithmetics (i.e., without any errors); (2) an optimal auxiliary N-dependent shift $β(N)$ of L exists and is unique; (3) the resulting perturbative E degenerates to the series in powers of $1/[L+β(N)]^2$; (4) a certain optimal Pade re-summation formulae exist and possess a generic branched-continued-fraction structure.

Linear representation of energy-dependent Hamiltonians

Effective (i.e., subspace-constrained) Hamiltonians become, by construction, energy-dependent while all the energy-dependent forces prove non-linear because the energy itself is merely an eigenvalue of the Hamiltonian H. One of the most natural resolutions of such a puzzle is proposed via an introduction of teh two separate linear representatives of the respective right and left action of H=H(E). Both the new energy-independent operators are non-Hermitian so that the formalism admits a natural extension to non-Hermitian initial H(E)s.

PT-symmetric regularizations in supersymmetric quantum mechanics

Supersymmetry offers one of the deepest insights in the concept of solvability in quantum mechanics. This insight is, paradoxically, restricted by one of the most serious formal drawbacks of the standard Witten's formulation of supersymmetric quantum mechanics which lies in the Jevicki-Rodrigues' postulate of absence of poles in superpotentials W(x) over all the real axis of coordinates x. In our review we emphasize that this obstacle is artificial and that it disappears immediately after a suitable (say, constant) shift of the axis of x into complex plane. Detailed attention is paid to a close relationship between this common trick and the recent not quite expected increase of interest in non-Hermitian (a. k. a. PT-symmetric or pseudo-Hermitian) Hamiltonians. We show that the resulting PT-SUSY regularization recipe proves both easy and universal. An insight into its mathematics is mediated by the complex harmonic oscillator with a centrifugal-like spike. An exhaustive discussion of the role of the strength of this spike is offered. In addition we recollect the possibility of a re-formulation of the recipe in the second-order SUSY language. Finally we list a few promising directions of applicability of our PT-SUSY regularization prescription to a few more complicated nonrelativistic models (superintegrable Hamiltonians of the Smorodinsky-Winternitz and of the Calogero-Sutherland type) and to the relativistic Klein-Gordon equation (as well as to all of its unphysical higher-order analogues).

An asymptotic intertwining of the undelayed and delayed Fibonacci numbers

The list of properties of Fibonacci numbers F(n) (with multifaceted relevance in physics) is complemented by an empirical observation that in combination with the "next" family of the "delayed Fibonacci" numbers G(n) called, for convenience, "Gibonacci numbers" here, both sets exhibit certain remarkable and fairly unexpected asymptotic mutual-bracketing properties.
