Gegenbauer-solvable quantum chain model

In an innovative inverse-problem construction the measured, experimental energies $E_1$, $E_2$, ...$E_N$ of a quantum bound-state system are assumed fitted by an N-plet of zeros of a classical orthogonal polynomial $f_N(E)$. We reconstruct the underlying Hamiltonian $H$ (in the most elementary nearest-neighbor-interaction form) and the underlying Hilbert space ${\cal H}$ of states (the rich menu of non-equivalent inner products is offered). The Gegenbauer's ultraspherical polynomials $f_n(x)=C_n^α(x)$ are chosen for the detailed illustration of technicalities.

Imaginary cubic oscillator and its square-well approximations in x- and p-representation

Schroedinger equation with imaginary PT-symmetric potential $V^{}(x) = i\,x^3$ is studied using the numerical discretization methods in both the coordinate and momentum representations. In the former case our results confirm that the model generates an infinite number of bound states with real energies. In the latter case the differential equation is of the third order and a square-well, solvable approximation of kinetic energy is recommended and discussed. One finds that in the strong-coupling limit, the exact PT-symmetric solutions converge to their Hermitian predecessors.

Anomalous real spectra of non-Hermitian quantum graphs in strong-coupling regime

Toy quantum Hamiltonians $H\neq H^\dagger$ with real spectra are considered as living on graphs $\mathbb{G}$ which only differ from the standard real line $\mathbb{R}$ locally, on a microscopic fundamental-length scale. In terms of a nontrivial metric the "hidden Hermiticity" property $H= H^\ddagger$ is postulated. Our calculations of the energies (based on a discretization of $\mathbb{G}$) indicate that the nontriviality of the topology of the graph may be responsible for certain nonperturbative features of the energies.

Rectifiable PT-symmetric Quantum Toboggans with Two Branch Points

Certain complex-contour (a.k.a. quantum-toboggan) generalizations of Schroedinger's bound-state problem are reviewed and studied in detail. Our key message is that the practical numerical solution of these atypical eigenvalue problems may perceivably be facilitated via an appropriate complex change of variables which maps their multi-sheeted complex domain of definition to a suitable single-sheeted complex plane.

Complete Set of Inner Products for a Discrete PT-symmetric Square-well Hamiltonian

A discrete $N-$point Runge-Kutta version $H^{(N)}(λ)$ of one of the simplest non-Hermitian square-well Hamiltonians with real spectrum is studied. A complete set of its possible hermitizations (i.e., of the eligible metrics $Θ^{(N)}(λ)$ defining its non-equivalent physical Hilbert spaces of states) is constructed, in closed form, for any coupling $λ\in (-1,1)$ and any matrix dimension $N$.

Fundamental length in quantum theories with PT-symmetric Hamiltonians II: The case of quantum graphs

Manifestly non-Hermitian quantum graphs with real spectra are introduced and shown tractable as a new class of phenomenological models with several appealing descriptive properties. For illustrative purposes, just equilateral star-graphs are considered here in detail, with non-Hermiticities introduced by interactions attached to the vertices. The facilitated feasibility of the analysis of their spectra is achieved via their systematic approximative Runge-Kutta-inspired reduction to star-shaped discrete lattices. The resulting bound-state spectra are found real in a discretization-independent interval of couplings. This conclusion is reinterpreted as the existence of a hidden Hermiticity of our models, i.e., as the standard and manifest Hermiticity of the underlying Hamiltonian in one of less usual, {\em ad hoc} representations ${\cal H}_j$ of the Hilbert space of states in which the inner product is local (at $j=0$) or increasingly nonlocal (at $j=1,2, ...$). Explicit examples of these (of course, Hamiltonian-dependent) hermitizing inner products are offered in closed form. In this way each initial quantum graph is assigned a menu of optional, non-equivalent standard probabilistic interpretations exhibiting a controlled, tunable nonlocality.

Time-Dependent and/or Nonlocal Representations of Hilbert Spaces in Quantum Theory

A few recent innovations of applicability of standard textbook Quantum Theory are reviewed. The three-Hilbert-space formulation of the theory (known from the interacting boson models in nuclear physics) is discussed in its slightly broadened four-Hilbert-space update. Among applications involving several new scattering and bound-state problems the central role is played by the models using apparently non-Hermitian ("crypto-Hermitian") Hamiltonians with real spectra. The formalism (originally inspired by the topical need of mathematically consistent description of tobogganic quantum models) is shown to admit certain unusual nonlocal and/or "moving-frame" representations of the standard physical Hilbert space of wave functions.

Cryptohermitian Picture of Scattering Using Quasilocal Metric Operators

One-dimensional unitary scattering controlled by non-Hermitian (typically, ${\cal PT}$-symmetric) quantum Hamiltonians $H\neq H^\dagger$ is considered. Treating these operators via Runge-Kutta approximation, our three-Hilbert-space formulation of quantum theory is reviewed as explaining the unitarity of scattering. Our recent paper on bound states [Znojil M., SIGMA 5 (2009), 001, 19 pages, arXiv:0901.0700] is complemented by the text on scattering. An elementary example illustrates the feasibility of the resulting innovative theoretical recipe. A new family of the so called quasilocal inner products in Hilbert space is found to exist. Constructively, these products are all described in terms of certain non-equivalent short-range metric operators $Θ\neq I$ represented, in Runge-Kutta approximation, by $(2R-1)$-diagonal matrices.

Fundamental length in quantum theories with PT-symmetric Hamiltonians

The direct observability of coordinates x is often lost in PT-symmetric quantum theories. A manifestly non-local Hilbert-space metric $Θ$ enters the double-integral normalization of wave functions $ψ(x)$ there. In the context of scattering, the (necessary) return to the asymptotically fully local metric has been shown feasible, for certain family of PT-symmetric toy Hamiltonians H at least, in paper I (M. Znojil, Phys. Rev. D 78 (2008) 025026). Now we show that in a confined-motion dynamical regime the same toy model proves also suitable for an explicit control of the measure or width $θ$ of its non-locality. For this purpose each H is assigned here, constructively, the complete menu of its hermitizing metrics $Θ=Θ_θ$ distinguished by their optional "fundamental lengths" $θ\in (0,\infty)$. The local metric of paper I recurs at $θ=0$ while the most popular CPT-symmetric hermitization proves long-ranged, with $θ=\infty$.

Scattering theory using smeared non-Hermitian potentials

Complex, non-Hermitian potentials V(x) can often generate standard quantum bound states. H. F. Jones [Phys. Rev. D 78, 065032 (2008)] demonstrated that the idea cannot directly be transferred to scattering. We reveal that a return to the causal and unitary and asymptotically Hermitian scattering theory exists for potentials which are allowed slightly non-local, V=V(x,p).

Scattering in the PT-symmetric Coulomb potential

Scattering on the ${\cal PT}$-symmetric Coulomb potential is studied along a U-shaped trajectory circumventing the origin in the complex $x$ plane from below. This trajectory reflects ${\cal PT}$ symmetry, sets the appropriate boundary conditions for bound states and also allows the restoration of the correct sign of the energy eigenvalues. Scattering states are composed from the two linearly independent solutions valid for non-integer values of the 2L parameter, which would correspond to the angular momentum in the usual Hermitian setting. Transmission and reflection coefficients are written in closed analytic form and it is shown that similarly to other ${\cal PT}$-symmetric scattering systems the latter exhibit handedness effect. Bound-state energies are recovered from the poles of the transmission coefficients.

Sturm-Schroedinger equations: formula for metric

Sturm-Schroedinger equations $Hψ=E Wψ$ with $H\neq H^\dagger$ and $W\neq W^\dagger \neq I$ are considered, with a weak point of the theory lying in the purely numerical matrix-inversion form of the double-series definition of the necessary metric operator $Θ$ in the physical Hilbert space of states [M. Znojil, J. Phys. A: Math. Theor. 41 (2008) 215304]. This shortcoming is removed here via an amended, single-series definition of $Θ$.

Supersymmetric quantum mechanics living on topologically nontrivial Riemann surfaces

Supersymmetric quantum mechanics is constructed in a new non-Hermitian representation. Firstly, the map between the partner operators $H^{(\pm)}$ is chosen antilinear. Secondly, both these components of a super-Hamiltonian ${\cal H}$ are defined along certain topologically nontrivial complex curves $r^{(\pm)}(x)$ which spread over several Riemann sheets of the wave function. The non-uniqueness of our choice of the map ${\cal T}$ between "tobogganic" partner curves $r^{(+)}(x)$ and $r^{(-)}(x)$ is emphasized.

Asymptotically vanishing PT-symmetric potentials and negative-mass Schroedinger equations

In paper I [M. Znojil and G. Lévai, Phys. Lett. A 271 (2000) 327] we introduced the Coulomb - Kratzer bound-state problem in its cryptohermitian, PT-symmetric version. An instability of the original model is revealed and its necessary stabilization is achieved, for almost all couplings, by an unusual, negative choice of the bare mass in Schroediner equation.

Three-Hilbert-Space Formulation of Quantum Mechanics

In paper [Znojil M., Phys. Rev. D 78 (2008), 085003, 5 pages, arXiv:0809.2874] the two-Hilbert-space (2HS, a.k.a. cryptohermitian) formulation of Quantum Mechanics has been revisited. In the present continuation of this study (with the spaces in question denoted as ${\cal H}^{\rm (auxiliary)}$ and ${\cal H}^{\rm (standard)}$) we spot a weak point of the 2HS formalism which lies in the double role played by ${\cal H}^{\rm (auxiliary)}$. As long as this confluence of roles may (and did!) lead to confusion in the literature, we propose an amended, three-Hilbert-space (3HS) reformulation of the same theory. As a byproduct of our analysis of the formalism we offer an amendment of the Dirac's bra-ket notation and we also show how its use clarifies the concept of covariance in time-dependent cases. Via an elementary example we finally explain why in certain quantum systems the generator $H_{\rm (gen)}$ of the time-evolution of the wave functions may differ from their Hamiltonian $H$.

Time-dependent version of cryptohermitian quantum theory

For many quantum models an apparent non-Hermiticity of observables corresponds to their hidden Hermiticity in another, physical Hilbert space. For these models we show that the existence of observables which are manifestly time-dependent may require the use of a manifestly time-dependent representation of the physical Hilbert space of states.
