Weak stability of Lagrangian solutions to the semigeostrophic equations

In [1], Cullen and Feldman proved existence of Lagrangian solutions for the semigeostrophic system in physical variables with initial potential vorticity in $L^p$, $p>1$. Here, we show that a subsequence of the Lagrangian solutions corresponding to a strongly convergent sequence of initial potential vorticities in $L^1$ converges strongly in $L^q$, $q<\infty$, to a Lagrangian solution, in particular extending the existence result of Cullen and Feldman to the case $p=1$. We also present a counterexample for Lagrangian solutions corresponding to a sequence of initial potential vorticities converging in $\mathcal{BM}$. The analytical tools used include techniques from optimal transportation, Ambrosio's results on transport by $BV$ vector fields, and Orlicz spaces. [1] M. Cullen and M. Boundary layers and the vanishing viscosity limit for incompressible 2D flow

This manuscript is a survey on results related to boundary layers and the vanishing viscosity limit for incompressible flow. It is the lecture notes for a 10 hour minicourse given at the Morningside Center, Academia Sinica, Beijing, PRC from 11/28 to 12/07, 2007. The main topics covered are: a derivation of Prandtl's boundary layer equation; an outline of the rigorous theory of Prandtl's equation, without proofs; Kato's criterion for the vanishing viscosity limit; the vanishing viscosity limit with Navier friction condition; rigorous boundary layer theory for the Navier friction condition and boundary layers for flows in a rotating cylinder.

Two-dimensional incompressible ideal flows in a noncylindrical material domain

The purpose of this work is to prove existence of a weak solution of the two dimensional incompressible Euler equations on a noncylindrical domain consisting of a smooth, bounded, connected and simply connected domain undergoing a prescribed motion. We prove existence of a weak solution for initial vorticity in $L^p$, for $p>1$. This work complements a similar result by C. He and L. Hsiao, who proved existence assuming that the flow velocity is tangent to the moving boundary, see [JDE v. 163 (2000) 265--291].

Weak solutions, renormalized solutions and enstrophy defects in 2D turbulence

Enstrophy, half the integral of the square of vorticity, plays a role in 2D turbulence theory analogous to that played by kinetic energy in the Kolmogorov theory of 3D turbulence. It is therefore interesting to obtain a description of the way enstrophy is dissipated at high Reynolds number. In this article we explore the notions of viscous and transport enstrophy defect, which model the spatial structure of the dissipation of enstrophy. These notions were introduced by G. Eyink in an attempt to reconcile the Kraichnan-Batchelor theory of 2D turbulence with current knowledge of the properties of weak solutions of the equations of incompressible and ideal fluid motion. Three natural questions arise from Eyink's theory: (1) Existence of the enstrophy defects (2) Conditions for the equality of transport and viscous enstrophy defects (3) Conditions for the vanishing of the enstrophy defects. In [Nonlinearity, v 14 (2001) 787-802], Eyink proved a number of results related to these questions and formulated a conjecture on how to answer these problems in a physically meaningful context. In the present article we improve and extend some of Eyink's results and present a counterexample to his conjecture.
