Non-uniqueness of forced active scalar equations with even drift operators

We consider forced active scalar equations with even and homogeneous degree 0 drift operator on $\mathbb T^d$. Inspired by the non-uniqueness construction for dyadic fluid models, by implementing a sum-difference convex integration scheme we obtain non-unique weak solutions for the active scalar equation in space $C_t^0C_x^α$ with $α<\frac{1}{2d+1}$. We note that in 1D, the regularity $α<\frac13$ is sharp as the energy identity is satisfied for solutions in $C^α$ with $α>\frac13$. Without external forcing, Isett and Vicol constructed non-unique weak solutions for such active scalar equations with spatial regularity $C_x^α$ for $α<\frac{1}{4d+1}$.

Non-unique weak solutions of forced SQG

We construct non-unique weak solutions $θ\in C_t^0C_x^{0-}$ for forced surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation. This is achieved through a convex integration scheme adapted to the sum-difference system of two distinct solutions. Without external forcing, non-unique weak solutions $θ$ in space $C_t^0C_x^α$ with $α<-\frac15$ were constructed by Buckmaster, Shkoller and Vicol, and Isett and Ma.

Global existence of 2D electron MHD near a steady state

We study the electron magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) in two dimensional geometry, which has a rich family of steady states. In an anisotropic resistivity context, we show global in time existence of small smooth solution near a shear type steady state. Convergence rate of the solution to the steady state is also obtained.

Uniqueness for a stochastic ideal dyadic MHD model

We study a stochastic dyadic model with both forward and backward energy cascade mechanisms for the inviscid and non-resistive magnetohydrodynamics. For a particular class of stochastic forcing, we show weak uniqueness for the stochastic system. However the solution dissipates the energy which is formally an invariant quantity for the system.

Dyadic models for fluid equations: a survey

Over the centuries mathematicians have been challenged by the partial differential equations (PDEs) that describe the motion of fluids in many physical contexts. Important and beautiful results were obtained in the past one hundred years, including the groundbreaking work of Ladyzhenskaya on the Navier-Stokes equations. However crucial questions such as the existence, uniqueness and regularity of the three dimensional Navier-Stokes equations remain open. Partly because of this mathematical challenge and partly motivated by the phenomena of turbulence, insights into the full PDEs have been sought via the study of simpler approximating systems that retain some of the original nonlinear features. One such simpler system is an infinite dimensional coupled set of nonlinear ordinary differential equations referred to a dyadic model. In this survey we provide a brief overview of dyadic models and describe recent results. In particular, we discuss results for certain dyadic models in the context of existence, uniqueness and regularity of solutions.

Non-unique stationary solutions of forced SQG

We show the existence of non-unique stationary weak solutions for forced surface quasi-geostrophic (SQG) equation via a convex integration scheme. The scheme is implemented for the sum-difference system of two distinct solutions. Through this scheme, one observes the external forcing is naturally generated accompanying the flexibility in means of lack of uniqueness. It thus provides a transparent way to reveal the flexibility of the system with the presence of a forcing.

Dissipation wavenumber and regularity for electron magnetohydrodynamics

We consider the electron magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with static background ion flow. A special situation of $B(x,y,t)=\nabla\times (a\vec e_z)+b \vec e_z$ with scalar-valued functions $a(x,y,t)$ and $b(x,y,t)$ was studied numerically in the physics paper [7]. The authors concluded from numerical simulations that there is no evidence of dissipation cutoff for the electron MHD. In this paper we show the existence of determining wavenumber for the electron MHD, and establish a regularity condition only on the low modes of the solution. Our results suggest that the conclusion of the physics paper on the dissipation cutoff for the electron MHD is debatable.

Reduced models for electron magnetohydrodynamics: well-posedness and singularity formation

We propose some one-dimensional reduced models for the three-dimensional electron magnetohydrodynamics which involves a highly nonlinear Hall term with intricate structure. The models contain nonlocal nonlinear terms. Local well-posedness is obtained in certain circumstances. In contrast, for a model with nonlocal transport term, we show that finite time singularity may occur for some initial data.

Almost sure well-posedness for Hall MHD

We consider the magnetohydrodynamics system with Hall effect accompanied with initial data in supercritical Sobolev space. Via an appropriate randomization of the supercritical initial data, both local and small data global well-posedness for the system are obtained almost surely in critical Sobolev space.

Regularity criteria for the 3D Navier-Stokes and MHD equations

We prove that a solution to the 3D Navier-Stokes or MHD equations does not blow up at $t=T$ provided $\displaystyle \limsup_{q \to \infty} \int_{\mathcal{T}_q}^T \|Δ_q(\nabla \times u)\|_\infty \, dt$ is small enough, where $u$ is the velocity, $Δ_q$ is the Littlewood-Paley projection, and $\mathcal T_q$ is a certain sequence such that $\mathcal T_q \to T$ as $q \to \infty$. This improves many existing regularity criteria.

Uniqueness and non-uniqueness results for dyadic MHD models

We construct non-unique Leray-Hopf solutions for some dyadic models for magnetohydrodynamics when the intermittency dimension $δ$ is less than 1. In contrast, uniqueness of Leray-Hopf solution is established in the case of $δ\geq 1$. Analogous results on uniqueness and non-uniqueness of Leray-Hopf solution are also obtained for dyadic models of MHD with fractional diffusion.

Dyadic models for ideal MHD

We study two dyadic models for incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamics, one with a uni-directional energy cascade and the other one with both forward and backward energy cascades. Global existence of weak solutions and local well-posedness are established for both models. In addition, solutions to the model with uni-directional energy cascade associated with positive initial data are shown to develop blow-up at a finite time. Moreover, a set of fixed points is found for each model. Linear instability about some particular fixed points is proved.

Non-unique weak solutions in Leray-Hopf class of the 3D Hall-MHD system

Non-unique weak solutions in Leray-Hopf class are constructed for the three dimensional magneto-hydrodynamics with Hall effect. We adapt the widely appreciated convex integration framework developed in a recent work of Buckmaster and Vicol for the Navier-Stokes equation, and with deep roots in a sequence of breakthrough papers for the Euler equation.

1D Model for the 3D Magnetohydrodynamics

We propose a one-dimensional (1D) model for the three-dimensional(3D) incompressible ideal magnetohydrodynamics. We establish a regularity criterion of the Beale-Kato-Majda type for this 1D model. Without the stretching effect, the model with only transport effect equipped with a proper sign is shown to have global in time strong solution. Some numerical simulations suggest that solutions of this model with smooth periodic initial data do not tend to develop singularities at finite time.

Determining modes for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations

We introduce a determining wavenumber for the forced 3D Navier-Stokes equations (NSE) defined for each individual solution. Even though this wavenumber blows up if the solution blows up, its time average is uniformly bounded for all solutions on the global attractor. The bound is compared to Kolmogorov's dissipation wavenumber and the Grashof constant.

Blow-up of dyadic MHD models with forward energy cascade

A particular type of dyadic model for the magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) with forward energy cascade is studied. The model includes intermittency dimension $δ$ in the nonlinear scales. It is shown that when $δ$ is small, positive solution with large initial data for either the dyadic MHD model or the dyadic Hall MHD develops blow-up in finite time.
