Extremely Large-Scale Movable Antenna-Enabled Multiuser Communications: Modeling and Optimization

Movable antenna (MA) has been recognized as a promising technology to improve communication performance in future wireless networks such as 6G. To unleash its potential, this paper proposes a novel architecture, namely extremely large-scale MA (XL-MA), which allows flexible antenna/subarray positioning over an extremely large spatial region for effectively enhancing near-field effects and spatial multiplexing performance. In particular, this paper studies an uplink XL-MA-enabled multiuser system, where single-antenna users distributed in a coverage area are served by a base station (BS) equipped with multiple movable subarrays. We begin by presenting a spatially non-stationary channel model to capture the near-field effects, including positiondependent large-scale channel gains and line-of-sight visibility. To evaluate system performance, we further derive a closedform approximation of the expected weighted sum rate under maximum ratio combining (MRC), revealing that optimizing XLMA placement enhances user channel power gain to increase desired signal power and reduces channel correlation to decreases multiuser interference. Building upon this, we formulate an antenna placement optimization problem to maximize the expected weighted sum rate, leveraging statistical channel conditions and user distribution. To efficiently solve this challenging non-linear binary optimization problem, we propose a polynomial-time successive replacement algorithm. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed XL-MA placement strategy achieves nearoptimal performance, significantly outperforming benchmark schemes based on conventional fixed-position antennas.

All-fiber highly efficient delivery of 2 kW laser over 2.45 km hollow-core fiber

Anti-resonant hollow-core fibers (AR-HCFs) have emerged as an important medium for high-power laser delivery due to their low optical nonlinearity and high damage threshold. However, current delivery systems of high-power laser based on AR-HCFs mainly rely on free-space optical components, which limits long-term stability in dynamic environments. Here, we report an all-fiber delivery of 2 kW laser with 85.3% transmission efficiency over 2.45 km, using a self-fabricated AR-HCF with a record low transmission loss of 0.175 dB/km at 1080 nm. This represents a nearly 500-fold improvement in the power-distance product compared to reported all-fiber AR-HCF-based laser transmission systems, achieving a record transmission distance for high-power laser delivery. Notably, we observed the phenomenon of stimulated Raman scattering amplified within the silica nested tubes in AR-HCF for the first time. By effectively suppressing the Raman noise from the laser source, we achieve an all-fiber laser delivery without stimulated Raman scattering of silica glass. This work marks a significant breakthrough in multi-kilometer and multi-kilowatt power delivery that is potentially useful for industrial manufacturing, nuclear decommissioning, laser drilling of oil, particle acceleration and so on.

Multi-IRS Enhanced Wireless Coverage: Deployment Optimization Based on Large-Scale Channel Knowledge

In this paper, we study the intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) deployment problem where a number of IRSs are optimally placed in a target area to improve its signal coverage with the serving base station (BS). To achieve this, we assume that there is a given set of candidate sites in the target area for deploying IRSs and divide the area into multiple grids of identical size. Then, we derive the average channel power gains from the BS to IRS in each candidate site and from this IRS to any grid in the target area in terms of IRS deployment parameters, including its size, position, height, and orientation. Thus, we are able to approximate the average cascaded channel power gain from the BS to each grid via any IRS, assuming an effective IRS reflection gain based on the large-scale channel knowledge only. Next, we formulate a multi-IRS deployment optimization problem to minimize the total deployment cost by selecting a subset of candidate sites for deploying IRSs and jointly optimizing their heights, orientations, and numbers of reflecting elements while satisfying a given coverage rate performance requirement over all grids in the target area. To solve this challenging combinatorial optimization problem, we first reformulate it as an integer linear programming problem and solve it optimally using the branch-and-bound (BB) algorithm. In addition, we propose an efficient successive refinement algorithm to further reduce computational complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed lower-complexity successive refinement algorithm achieves near-optimal performance but with significantly reduced running time compared to the proposed optimal BB algorithm, as well as superior performance-cost trade-off than other baseline IRS deployment strategies.

Multi-Passive/Active-IRS Enhanced Wireless Coverage: Deployment Optimization and Cost-Performance Trade-off

Both passive and active intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs) can be deployed in complex environments to enhance wireless network coverage by creating multiple blockage-free cascaded line-of-sight (LoS) links. In this paper, we study a multi-passive/active-IRS (PIRS/AIRS) aided wireless network with a multi-antenna base station (BS) in a given region. First, we divide the region into multiple non-overlapping cells, each of which may contain one candidate location that can be deployed with a single PIRS or AIRS. Then, we show several trade-offs between minimizing the total IRS deployment cost and enhancing the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) performance over all cells via direct/cascaded LoS transmission with the BS. To reconcile these trade-offs, we formulate a joint multi-PIRS/AIRS deployment problem to select an optimal subset of all candidate locations for deploying IRS and also optimize the number of passive/active reflecting elements deployed at each selected location to satisfy a given SNR target over all cells, such that the total deployment cost is minimized. However, due to the combinatorial optimization involved, the formulated problem is difficult to be solved optimally. To tackle this difficulty, we first optimize the reflecting element numbers with given PIRS/AIRS deployed locations via sequential refinement, followed by a partial enumeration to determine the PIRS/AIRS locations. Simulation results show that our proposed algorithm achieves better cost-performance trade-offs than other baseline deployment strategies.

Multi-Active/Passive-IRS Enabled Wireless Information and Power Transfer: Active IRS Deployment and Performance Analysis

Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRSs), active and/or passive, can be densely deployed in complex environments to significantly enhance wireless network coverage for both wireless information transfer (WIT) and wireless power transfer (WPT). In this letter, we study the downlink WIT/WPT from a multi-antenna base station to a single-antenna user over a multi-active/passive IRS (AIRS/PIRS)-enabled wireless link. In particular, we aim to optimize the location of the AIRS with those of the other PIRSs being fixed to maximize the received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and signal power at the user in the cases of WIT and WPT, respectively. We derive the optimal solutions for these two cases in closed-form, which reveals that the optimal AIRS deployment is generally different for WIT versus WPT. Furthermore, both analytical and numerical results are provided to show the conditions under which the proposed AIRS deployment strategy yields superior performance to other baseline deployment strategies as well as the conventional all- PIRS enabled WIT/WPT.

UAV-Assisted Multi-Cluster Over-the-Air Computation

In this paper, we study unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) assisted wireless data aggregation (WDA) in multicluster networks, where multiple UAVs simultaneously perform different WDA tasks via over-the-air computation (AirComp) without terrestrial base stations. This work focuses on maximizing the minimum amount of WDA tasks performed among all clusters by optimizing the UAV's trajectory and transceiver design as well as cluster scheduling and association, while considering the WDA accuracy requirement. Such a joint design is critical for interference management in multi-cluster AirComp networks, via enhancing the signal quality between each UAV and its associated cluster for signal alignment and meanwhile reducing the inter-cluster interference between each UAV and its nonassociated clusters. Although it is generally challenging to optimally solve the formulated non-convex mixed-integer nonlinear programming, an efficient iterative algorithm as a compromise approach is developed by exploiting bisection and block coordinate descent methods, yielding an optimal transceiver solution in each iteration. The optimal binary variables and a suboptimal trajectory are obtained by using the dual method and successive convex approximation, respectively. Simulations show the considerable performance gains of the proposed design over benchmarks and the superiority of deploying multiple UAVs in increasing the number of performed tasks while reducing access delays.

Federated Learning via Unmanned Aerial Vehicle

To enable communication-efficient federated learning (FL), this paper studies an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-enabled FL system, where the UAV coordinates distributed ground devices for a shared model training. Specifically, by exploiting the UAV's high altitude and mobility, the UAV can proactively establish short-distance line-of-sight links with devices and prevent any device from being a communication straggler. Thus, the model aggregation process can be accelerated while the cumulative model loss caused by device scheduling can be reduced, resulting in a decreased completion time. We first present the convergence analysis of FL without the assumption of convexity, demonstrating the effect of device scheduling on the global gradients. Based on the derived convergence bound, we further formulate the completion time minimization problem by jointly optimizing device scheduling, UAV trajectory, and time allocation. This problem explicitly incorporates the devices' energy budgets, dynamic channel conditions, and convergence accuracy of FL constraints. Despite the non-convexity of the formulated problem, we exploit its structure to decompose it into two sub-problems and further derive the optimal solutions via the Lagrange dual ascent method. Simulation results show that the proposed design significantly improves the tradeoff between completion time and prediction accuracy in practical FL settings compared to existing benchmarks.

Active and Passive IRS Jointly Aided Communication: Deployment Design and Achievable Rate

In this letter, we study the wireless point-to-point communication from a transmitter (Tx) to a receiver (Rx), which is jointly aided by an active intelligent reflecting surface (AIRS) and a passive IRS (PIRS). We consider two practical transmission schemes by deploying the two IRSs in different orders, namely, Tx$\rightarrow$PIRS$\rightarrow$AIRS$\rightarrow$Rx (TPAR) and Tx$\rightarrow$AIRS$\rightarrow$PIRS$\rightarrow$Rx (TAPR). Assuming line-of-sight channels, we derive the achievable rates for the two schemes by optimizing the placement of the AIRS with the location of the PIRS fixed. Our analysis shows that when the number of PIRS elements and/or the AIRS amplification power is small, the AIRS should be deployed closer to the Rx in both schemes, and TAPR outperforms TPAR with their respective optimized AIRS/PIRS placement. Simulation results validate our analysis and show the considerable performance gain achieved by the jointly optimized AIRS/PIRS deployment over the baseline double-PIRS system under the same power and IRS element budgets.

UAV Aided Over-the-Air Computation

Over-the-air computation (AirComp) seamlessly integrates communication and computation by exploiting the waveform superposition property of multiple-access channels. Different from the existing works that focus on transceiver design of AirComp over static networks, this paper considers an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) aided AirComp system, where the UAV as a flying base station aggregates data from mobile sensors. The trajectory design of the UAV provides an additional degree of freedom to improve the performance of AirComp. Our goal is to minimize the time-averaged mean-squared error (MSE) of AirComp by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory, receive normalizing factors, and sensors' transmit power. To this end, we first propose a novel and equivalent problem transformation by introducing intermediate variables. This reformulation leads to a convex subproblem when fixing any other two blocks of variables, thereby enabling efficient algorithm design based on the principle of block coordinate descent and alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) techniques. In particular, we derive the optimal closed-form solutions for normalizing factors and intermediate variables optimization subproblems. We also recast the convex trajectory design subproblem into an ADMM form and obtain the closed-form expressions for each variable updating. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm achieves a smaller time-averaged MSE while reducing the simulation time by orders of magnitude compared to state-of-the-art algorithms.

UAV-Assisted Over-the-Air Computation

Over-the-air computation (AirComp) provides a promising way to support ultrafast aggregation of distributed data. However, its performance cannot be guaranteed in long-distance transmission due to the distortion induced by the channel fading and noise. To unleash the full potential of AirComp, this paper proposes to use a low-cost unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) acting as a mobile base station to assist AirComp systems. Specifically, due to its controllable high-mobility and high-altitude, the UAV can move sufficiently close to the sensors to enable line-of-sight transmission and adaptively adjust all the links' distances, thereby enhancing the signal magnitude alignment and noise suppression. Our goal is to minimize the time-averaging mean-square error for AirComp by jointly optimizing the UAV trajectory, the scaling factor at the UAV, and the transmit power at the sensors, under constraints on the UAV's predetermined locations and flying speed, sensors' average and peak power limits. However, due to the highly coupled optimization variables and time-dependent constraints, the resulting problem is non-convex and challenging. We thus propose an efficient iterative algorithm by applying the block coordinate descent and successive convex optimization techniques. Simulation results verify the convergence of the proposed algorithm and demonstrate the performance gains and robustness of the proposed design compared with benchmarks.

An ensemble learning approach for software semantic clone detection

Code clone is a serious problem in software and has the potential to software defects, maintenance overhead, and licensing violations. Therefore, clone detection is important for reducing maintenance effort and improving code quality during software evolution. A variety of clone detection techniques have been proposed to identify similar code in software. However, few of them can efficiently detect semantic clones (functionally similar code without any syntactic resemblance). Recently, several deep learning based clone detectors are proposed to detect semantic clones. However, these approaches have high cost in data labelling and model training. In this paper, we propose a novel approach that leverages word embedding and ensemble learning techniques to detect semantic clones. Our evaluation on a commonly used clone benchmark, BigCloneBench, shows that our approach significantly improves the precision and recall of semantic clone detection, in comparison to a token-based clone detector, SourcererCC, and another deep learning based clone detector, CDLH.

ICS-Assist: Intelligent Customer Inquiry Resolution Recommendation in Online Customer Service for Large E-Commerce Businesses

Efficient and appropriate online customer service is essential to large e-commerce businesses. Existing solution recommendation methods for online customer service are unable to determine the best solutions at runtime, leading to poor satisfaction of end customers. This paper proposes a novel intelligent framework, called ICS-Assist, to recommend suitable customer service solutions for service staff at runtime. Specifically, we develop a generalizable two-stage machine learning model to identify customer service scenarios and determine customer service solutions based on a scenario-solution mapping table. We implement ICS-Assist and evaluate it using an over 6-month field study with Alibaba Group. In our experiment, over 12,000 customer service staff use ICS-Assist to serve for over 230,000 cases per day on average. The experimen-tal results show that ICS-Assist significantly outperforms the traditional manual method, and improves the solution acceptance rate, the solution coverage rate, the average service time, the customer satisfaction rate, and the business domain catering rate by up to 16%, 25%, 6%, 14% and 17% respectively, compared to the state-of-the-art methods.

Stochastic Beamforming for Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Aided Over-the-Air Computation

Over-the-air computation (AirComp) is a promising technology that is capable of achieving fast data aggregation in Internet of Things (IoT) networks. The mean-squared error (MSE) performance of AirComp is bottlenecked by the unfavorable channel conditions. This limitation can be mitigated by deploying a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS), which reconfigures the propagation environment to facilitate the receiving power equalization. The achievable performance of RIS relies on the availability of accurate channel state information (CSI), which however is generally difficult to be obtained. In this paper, we consider an RIS-aided AirComp IoT network, where an access point (AP) aggregates sensing data from distributed devices. Without assuming any prior knowledge on the underlying channel distribution, we formulate a stochastic optimization problem to maximize the probability that the MSE is below a certain threshold. The formulated problem turns out to be non-convex and highly intractable. To this end, we propose a data-driven approach to jointly optimize the receive beamforming vector at the AP and the phase-shift vector at the RIS based on historical channel realizations. After smoothing the objective function by adopting the sigmoid function, we develop an alternating stochastic variance reduced gradient (SVRG) algorithm with a fast convergence rate to solve the problem. Simulation results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm and the importance of deploying an RIS in reducing the MSE outage probability.

Outage Minimization for Intelligent Reflecting Surface Aided MISO Communication Systems via Stochastic Beamforming

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has the potential to significantly enhance the network performance by reconfiguring the wireless propagation environments. It is however difficult to obtain the accurate downlink channel state information (CSI) for efficient beamforming design in IRS-aided wireless networks. In this article, we consider an IRS-aided downlink multiple-input single-output (MISO) network, where the base station (BS) is not required to know the underlying channel distribution. We formulate an outage probability minimization problem by jointly optimizing the beamforming vector at the BS and the phase-shift matrix at the IRS, while taking into account the transmit power and unimodular constraints. The formulated problem turns out to be a non-convex non-smooth stochastic optimization problem. To this end, we employ the sigmoid function as the surrogate to tackle the non-smoothness of the objective function. In addition, we propose a data-driven efficient alternating stochastic gradient descent (SGD) algorithm to solve the problem by utilizing the historical channel samples. Simulation results demonstrate the performance gains of the proposed algorithm over the benchmark methods in terms of minimizing the outage probability.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface for Interference Alignment in MIMO Device-to-Device Networks

In multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) device-to-device (D2D) networks, interference and rank-deficient channels are the critical bottlenecks for achieving high degrees of freedom (DoFs). In this paper, we propose a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) assisted interference alignment strategy to simultaneous mitigate the co-channel interference and cope with rank-deficient channels, thereby improving the feasibility of interference alignment conditions and in turn increasing the achievable DoFs. The key enabler is a general low-rank optimization approach that maximizes the achievable DoFs by jointly designing the phase-shift and transceiver matrices. To address the unique challenges of the coupled optimization variables, we develop a block-structured Riemannian pursuit method by solving fixed-rank and unit modulus constrained least square subproblems along with rank increase. Finally, to reduce the computational complexity and achieve good DoF performance, we develop unified Riemannian conjugate gradient algorithms to alternately optimize the fixed-rank transceiver matrix and the unit modulus constrained phase shifter by exploiting the non-compact Stiefel manifold and the complex circle manifold, respectively. Numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of deploying an RIS and the superiority of the proposed block-structured Riemannian pursuit method in terms of the achievable DoFs and the achievable sum rate.

Towards Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces Powered Green Wireless Networks

The adoption of reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) in wireless networks can enhance the spectrum- and energy-efficiency by controlling the propagation environment. Although the RIS does not consume any transmit power, the circuit power of the RIS cannot be ignored, especially when the number of reflecting elements is large. In this paper, we propose the joint design of beamforming vectors at the base station, active RIS set, and phase-shift matrices at the active RISs to minimize the network power consumption, including the RIS circuit power consumption, while taking into account each user's target data rate requirement and each reflecting element's constant modulus constraint. However, the formulated problem is a mixed-integer quadratic programming (MIQP) problem, which is NP-hard. To this end, we present an alternating optimization method, which alternately solves second order cone programming (SOCP) and MIQP problems to update the optimization variables. Specifically, the MIQP problem is further transformed into a semidefinite programming problem by applying binary relaxation and semidefinite relaxation. Finally, an efficient algorithm is developed to solve the problem. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm significantly reduces the network power consumption and reveal the importance of taking into account the RIS circuit power consumption.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface Empowered Downlink Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access

Power-domain non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) has become a promising technology to exploit the new dimension of the power domain to enhance the spectral efficiency of wireless networks. However, most existing NOMA schemes rely on the strong assumption that users' channel gains are quite different, which may be invalid in practice. To unleash the potential of power-domain NOMA, we will propose a reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-empowered NOMA network to introduce desirable channel gain differences among the users by adjusting the phase shifts at RIS. Our goal is to minimize the total transmit power by jointly optimizing the beamforming vectors at the base station and the phase-shift matrix at the RIS. To address the highly coupled optimization variables, we present an alternating optimization framework to decompose the non-convex bi-quadratically constrained quadratic problem into two rank-one constrained matrices optimization problems via matrix lifting. At the same time, to accurately detect the feasibility of the non-convex rank-one constraints and improve performance by avoiding early stopping in the alternating optimization procedure, we equivalently represent the rank-one constraint as the difference between nuclear norm and spectral norm. A difference-of-convex (DC) algorithm is further developed to solve the resulting DC programs via successive convex relaxation, followed by establishing the convergence of the proposed DC-based alternating optimization method. We further propose an efficient user ordering scheme with closed-form expressions, considering both the channel conditions and users' target data rates. Simulation results will validate the effectiveness of deploying an RIS and the superiority of the proposed DC-based alternating optimization method in reducing the total transmit power.

Intelligent Reflecting Surface for Downlink Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access Networks

Intelligent reflecting surface (IRS) has recently been recognized as a promising technology to enhance the energy and spectrum efficiency of wireless networks by controlling the wireless medium with the configurable electromagnetic materials. In this paper, we consider the downlink transmit power minimization problem for a IRS-empowered non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) network by jointly optimizing the transmit beamformers at the BS and the phase shift matrix at the IRS. However, this problem turns out to be a highly intractable non-convex bi-quadratic programming problem, for which an alternative minimization framework is proposed via solving the non-convex quadratic programs alternatively. We further develop a novel difference-of-convex (DC) programming algorithm to solve the resulting non-convex quadratic programs efficiently by lifting the quadratic programs into rank-one constrained matrix optimization problems, followed by representing the non-convex rank function as a DC function. Simulation results demonstrate the performance gains of the proposed method.
