Ready for Emerging Threats to Recommender Systems? A Graph Convolution-based Generative Shilling Attack

To explore the robustness of recommender systems, researchers have proposed various shilling attack models and analyzed their adverse effects. Primitive attacks are highly feasible but less effective due to simplistic handcrafted rules, while upgraded attacks are more powerful but costly and difficult to deploy because they require more knowledge from recommendations. In this paper, we explore a novel shilling attack called Graph cOnvolution-based generative shilling ATtack (GOAT) to balance the attacks' feasibility and effectiveness. GOAT adopts the primitive attacks' paradigm that assigns items for fake users by sampling and the upgraded attacks' paradigm that generates fake ratings by a deep learning-based model. It deploys a generative adversarial network (GAN) that learns the real rating distribution to generate fake ratings. Additionally, the generator combines a tailored graph convolution structure that leverages the correlations between co-rated items to smoothen the fake ratings and enhance their authenticity. The extensive experiments on two public datasets evaluate GOAT's performance from multiple perspectives. Our study of the GOAT demonstrates technical feasibility for building a more powerful and intelligent attack model with a much-reduced cost, enables analysis the threat of such an attack and guides for investigating necessary prevention measures.

Coverage-dependent magnetic and electronic properties of graphene with Co adatoms

Decorating two-dimensional materials with transition-metal adatoms is an effective way to bring about new physical properties that are intriguing for applications in electronics and spintronics devices. Here, we systematically studied the coverage-dependent magnetic and electronic properties of graphene decorated by Co adatoms, based on first-principles calculations. We found that the if the Co coverage is larger than 1/3 ML, the Co atoms will aggregate to form a Co monolayer and then a van der Waals bilayer system between the Co monolayer and graphene forms. When the Co coverage is <= 1/3 ML, the Co adatom is spin polarized with spin moment varying from 1.1 ~ 1.4 μB. The d(xz/yz) and d(xy/x2-y2 ) orbitals of Co hybridize significantly with the π bands of graphene, which generates a series of new bands in the energy range from -2 eV to 1 eV with respect to Dirac point of graphene. In most cases, the new bands near the Fermi level lead to topological states characterized by the quantum anomalous Hall effect.

Insight-HXMT observations of jet-like corona in a black hole X-ray binary MAXI J1820+070

A black hole X-ray binary produces hard X-ray radiation from its corona and disk when the accreting matter heats up. During an outburst, the disk and corona co-evolves with each other. However, such an evolution is still unclear in both its geometry and dynamics. Here we report the unusual decrease of the reflection fraction in MAXI J1820+070, which is the ratio of the coronal intensity illuminating the disk to the coronal intensity reaching the observer, as the corona is observed to contrast during the decay phase. We postulate a jet-like corona model, in which the corona can be understood as a standing shock where the material flowing through. In this dynamical scenario, the decrease of the reflection fraction is a signature of the corona's bulk velocity. Our findings suggest that as the corona is observed to get closer to the black hole, the coronal material might be outflowing faster.

BridgeDPI: A Novel Graph Neural Network for Predicting Drug-Protein Interactions

Motivation: Exploring drug-protein interactions (DPIs) work as a pivotal step in drug discovery. The fast expansion of available biological data enables computational methods effectively assist in experimental methods. Among them, deep learning methods extract features only from basic characteristics, such as protein sequences, molecule structures. Others achieve significant improvement by learning from not only sequences/molecules but the protein-protein and drug-drug associations (PPAs and DDAs). The PPAs and DDAs are generally obtained by using computational methods. However, existing computational methods have some limitations, resulting in low-quality PPAs and DDAs that hamper the prediction performance. Therefore, we hope to develop a novel supervised learning method to learn the PPAs and DDAs effectively and thereby improve the prediction performance of the specific task of DPI. Results: In this research, we propose a novel deep learning framework, namely BridgeDPI. BridgeDPI introduces a class of nodes named hyper-nodes, which bridge different proteins/drugs to work as PPAs and DDAs. The hyper-nodes can be supervised learned for the specific task of DPI since the whole process is an end-to-end learning. Consequently, such a model would improve prediction performance of DPI. In three real-world datasets, we further demonstrate that BridgeDPI outperforms state-of-the-art methods. Moreover, ablation studies verify the effectiveness of the hyper-nodes. Last, in an independent verification, BridgeDPI explores the candidate bindings among COVID-19's proteins and various antiviral drugs. And the predictive results accord with the statement of the World Health Organization and Food and Drug Administration, showing the validity and reliability of BridgeDPI.

Skeleton-based Approaches based on Machine Vision: A Survey

Recently, skeleton-based approaches have achieved rapid progress on the basis of great success in skeleton representation. Plenty of researches focus on solving specific problems according to skeleton features. Some skeleton-based approaches have been mentioned in several overviews on object detection as a non-essential part. Nevertheless, there has not been any thorough analysis of skeleton-based approaches attentively. Instead of describing these techniques in terms of theoretical constructs, we devote to summarizing skeleton-based approaches with regard to application fields and given tasks as comprehensively as possible. This paper is conducive to further understanding of skeleton-based application and dealing with particular issues.

Enhancing Social Recommendation with Adversarial Graph Convolutional Networks

Social recommender systems are expected to improve recommendation quality by incorporating social information when there is little user-item interaction data. However, recent reports from industry show that social recommender systems consistently fail in practice. According to the negative findings, the failure is attributed to: (1) A majority of users only have a very limited number of neighbors in social networks and can hardly benefit from social relations; (2) Social relations are noisy but they are indiscriminately used; (3) Social relations are assumed to be universally applicable to multiple scenarios while they are actually multi-faceted and show heterogeneous strengths in different scenarios. Most existing social recommendation models only consider the homophily in social networks and neglect these drawbacks. In this paper we propose a deep adversarial framework based on graph convolutional networks (GCN) to address these problems. Concretely, for (1) and (2), a GCN-based autoencoder is developed to augment the relation data by encoding high-order and complex connectivity patterns, and meanwhile is optimized subject to the constraint of reconstructing the social profile to guarantee the validity of the identified neighborhood. After obtaining enough purified social relations for each user, a GCN-based attentive social recommendation module is designed to address (3) by capturing the heterogeneous strengths of social relations. Finally, we adopt adversarial training to unify all the components by playing a Minimax game and ensure a coordinated effort to enhance recommendation performance. Extensive experiments on multiple open datasets demonstrate the superiority of our framework and the ablation study confirms the importance and effectiveness of each component.

Disinformation in the Online Information Ecosystem: Detection, Mitigation and Challenges

With the rapid increase in access to internet and the subsequent growth in the population of online social media users, the quality of information posted, disseminated and consumed via these platforms is an issue of growing concern. A large fraction of the common public turn to social media platforms and in general the internet for news and even information regarding highly concerning issues such as COVID-19 symptoms. Given that the online information ecosystem is extremely noisy, fraught with misinformation and disinformation, and often contaminated by malicious agents spreading propaganda, identifying genuine and good quality information from disinformation is a challenging task for humans. In this regard, there is a significant amount of ongoing research in the directions of disinformation detection and mitigation. In this survey, we discuss the online disinformation problem, focusing on the recent 'infodemic' in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. We then proceed to discuss the inherent challenges in disinformation research, and then elaborate on the computational and interdisciplinary approaches towards mitigation of disinformation, after a short overview of the various directions explored in detection efforts.

Timing analysis of the black hole candidate EXO 1846-031 with Insight-HXMT monitoring

We present the observational results from a detailed timing analysis of the black hole candidate EXO 1846-031 during its outburst in 2019 with the observations of Insight-HXMT, NICER and MAXI. This outburst can be classfied roughly into four different states. Type-C quasi-periodic oscillations (QPOs) observed by NICER (about 0.1-6Hz) and Insight-HXMT (about 0.7-8Hz) are also reported in this work. Meanwhile, we study various physical quantities related to QPO frequency. The QPO rms-frequency relationship in three energy band 1-10 keV indicates that there is a turning pointing in frequency around 2 Hz,which is similar to that of GRS 1915+105. A possible hypothesis for the relationship above may be related to the inclination of the source, which may require a high inclination to explain it. The relationships between QPO frequency and QPO rms, hardness, total fractional rms and count rate have also been found in other transient sources, which can indicate that the origin of type-C QPOs is non-thermal.

Discovery of oscillations above 200 keV in a black hole X-ray binary with Insight-HXMT

Low-frequency quasi-periodic oscillations (LFQPOs) are commonly found in black hole X-ray binaries, and their origin is still under debate. The properties of LFQPOs at high energies (above 30 keV) are closely related to the nature of the accretion flow in the innermost regions, and thus play a crucial role in critically testing various theoretical models. The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT) is capable of detecting emissions above 30 keV, and is therefore an ideal instrument to do so. Here we report the discovery of LFQPOs above 200 keV in the new black hole MAXI J1820+070 in the X-ray hard state, which allows us to understand the behaviours of LFQPOs at hundreds of kiloelectronvolts. The phase lag of the LFQPO is constant around zero below 30 keV, and becomes a soft lag (that is, the high-energy photons arrive first) above 30 keV. The soft lag gradually increases with energy and reaches ~0.9s in the 150-200 keV band. The detection at energies above 200 keV, the large soft lag and the energy-related behaviors of the LFQPO pose a great challenge for most currently existing models, but suggest that the LFQPO probably originates from the precession of a small-scale jet.

Recommender Systems Based on Generative Adversarial Networks: A Problem-Driven Perspective

Recommender systems (RSs) now play a very important role in the online lives of people as they serve as personalized filters for users to find relevant items from an array of options. Owing to their effectiveness, RSs have been widely employed in consumer-oriented e-commerce platforms. However, despite their empirical successes, these systems still suffer from two limitations: data noise and data sparsity. In recent years, generative adversarial networks (GANs) have garnered increased interest in many fields, owing to their strong capacity to learn complex real data distributions; their abilities to enhance RSs by tackling the challenges these systems exhibit have also been demonstrated in numerous studies. In general, two lines of research have been conducted, and their common ideas can be summarized as follows: (1) for the data noise issue, adversarial perturbations and adversarial sampling-based training often serve as a solution; (2) for the data sparsity issue, data augmentation--implemented by capturing the distribution of real data under the minimax framework--is the primary coping strategy. To gain a comprehensive understanding of these research efforts, we review the corresponding studies and models, organizing them from a problem-driven perspective. More specifically, we propose a taxonomy of these models, along with their detailed descriptions and advantages. Finally, we elaborate on several open issues and current trends in GAN-based RSs.

Liquid crystal phases with unusual structures and physical properties formed by acute-angle bent-core molecules

Liquid crystals formed by acute-angle bent-core (ABC) molecules with a 1,7 naphthalene central core show an intriguing phase behavior with the nematic phase accompanied by poorly understood additional phases. In this work, we characterize the physical properties of an ABC material, such as birefringence, dielectric permittivities, elastic constants, and surface alignment, and present X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy studies of their ordering. The ABC molecular shape resembling the letter $λ$ yields a very small splay elastic constant in the uniaxial nematic phase and results in the formation of a tetragonal positionally ordered columnar phase consisting of molecular columns with a uniform uniaxial director that can be bent but not splayed.

MLBF-Net: A Multi-Lead-Branch Fusion Network for Multi-Class Arrhythmia Classification Using 12-Lead ECG

Automatic arrhythmia detection using 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) signal plays a critical role in early prevention and diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases. In the previous studies on automatic arrhythmia detection, most methods concatenated 12 leads of ECG into a matrix, and then input the matrix to a variety of feature extractors or deep neural networks for extracting useful information. Under such frameworks, these methods had the ability to extract comprehensive features (known as integrity) of 12-lead ECG since the information of each lead interacts with each other during training. However, the diverse lead-specific features (known as diversity) among 12 leads were neglected, causing inadequate information learning for 12-lead ECG. To maximize the information learning of multi-lead ECG, the information fusion of comprehensive features with integrity and lead-specific features with diversity should be taken into account. In this paper, we propose a novel Multi-Lead-Branch Fusion Network (MLBF-Net) architecture for arrhythmia classification by integrating multi-loss optimization to jointly learning diversity and integrity of multi-lead ECG. MLBF-Net is composed of three components: 1) multiple lead-specific branches for learning the diversity of multi-lead ECG; 2) cross-lead features fusion by concatenating the output feature maps of all branches for learning the integrity of multi-lead ECG; 3) multi-loss co-optimization for all the individual branches and the concatenated network. We demonstrate our MLBF-Net on China Physiological Signal Challenge 2018 which is an open 12-lead ECG dataset. The experimental results show that MLBF-Net obtains an average $F_1$ score of 0.855, reaching the highest arrhythmia classification performance. The proposed method provides a promising solution for multi-lead ECG analysis from an information fusion perspective.

Path-Based Reasoning over Heterogeneous Networks for Recommendation via Bidirectional Modeling

Heterogeneous Information Network (HIN) is a natural and general representation of data in recommender systems. Combining HIN and recommender systems can not only help model user behaviors but also make the recommendation results explainable by aligning the users/items with various types of entities in the network. Over the past few years, path-based reasoning models have shown great capacity in HIN-based recommendation. The basic idea of these models is to explore HIN with predefined path schemes. Despite their effectiveness, these models are often confronted with the following limitations: (1) Most prior path-based reasoning models only consider the influence of the predecessors on the subsequent nodes when modeling the sequences, and ignore the reciprocity between the nodes in a path; (2) The weights of nodes in the same path instance are usually assumed to be constant, whereas varied weights of nodes can bring more flexibility and lead to expressive modeling; (3) User-item interactions are noisy, but they are often indiscriminately exploited. To overcome the aforementioned issues, in this paper, we propose a novel path-based reasoning approach for recommendation over HIN. Concretely, we use a bidirectional LSTM to enable the two-way modeling of paths and capture the reciprocity between nodes. Then an attention mechanism is employed to learn the dynamical influence of nodes in different contexts. Finally, the adversarial regularization terms are imposed on the loss function of the model to mitigate the effects of noise and enhance HIN-based recommendation. Extensive experiments conducted on three public datasets show that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art baselines. The case study further demonstrates the feasibility of our model on the explainable recommendation task.

Reconstruction of high-resolution 6x6-mm OCT angiograms using deep learning

Typical optical coherence tomographic angiography (OCTA) acquisition areas on commercial devices are 3x3- or 6x6-mm. Compared to 3x3-mm angiograms with proper sampling density, 6x6-mm angiograms have significantly lower scan quality, with reduced signal-to-noise ratio and worse shadow artifacts due to undersampling. Here, we propose a deep-learning-based high-resolution angiogram reconstruction network (HARNet) to generate enhanced 6x6-mm superficial vascular complex (SVC) angiograms. The network was trained on data from 3x3-mm and 6x6-mm angiograms from the same eyes. The reconstructed 6x6-mm angiograms have significantly lower noise intensity and better vascular connectivity than the original images. The algorithm did not generate false flow signal at the noise level presented by the original angiograms. The image enhancement produced by our algorithm may improve biomarker measurements and qualitative clinical assessment of 6x6-mm OCTA.

Electron-Electron Interactions in 2D Semiconductor InSe

Electron-electron interactions (EEIs) in 2D van der Waals structures is one of the topics with high current interest in physics. We report the observation of a negative parabolic magnetoresistance (MR) in multilayer 2D semiconductor InSe beyond the low-field weak localization/antilocalization regime, and provide evidence for the EEI origin of this MR behavior. Further, we analyze this negative parabolic MR and other observed quantum transport signatures of EEIs (temperature dependent conductance and Hall coefficient) within the framework of Fermi liquid theory and extract the gate voltage tunable Fermi liquid parameter $F_0^σ$ which quantifies the electron spin-exchange interaction strength.

Conductivity-Like Gilbert Damping due to Intraband Scattering in Epitaxial Iron

Confirming the origin of Gilbert damping by experiment has remained a challenge for many decades, even for simple ferromagnetic metals. In this Letter, we experimentally identify Gilbert damping that increases with decreasing electronic scattering in epitaxial thin films of pure Fe. This observation of conductivity-like damping, which cannot be accounted for by classical eddy current loss, is in excellent quantitative agreement with theoretical predictions of Gilbert damping due to intraband scattering. Our results resolve the longstanding question about a fundamental damping mechanism and offer hints for engineering low-loss magnetic metals for cryogenic spintronics and quantum devices.

Studies on the time response distribution of Insigh}-HXMT/LE

The Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (HXMT) named Insight is China's first X-ray astronomical satellite. The Low Energy X-ray Telescope (LE) is one of its main payloads onboard. The detectors of LE adopt swept charge device CCD236 with L-shaped transfer electrodes. Charges in detection area are read out continuously along specific paths, which leads to a time response distribution of photons readout time. We designed a long exposure readout mode to measure the time response distribution. In this mode, CCD236 firstly performs exposure without readout, then all charges generated in preceding exposure phase are read out completely. Through analysis of the photons readout time in this mode, we obtained the probability distribution of photons readout time.
