We prove a conjecture of Ross concerning the value distribution of $\dim S_2^{\rm new}(\Gamma_0(N))$ for $N\in\mathbb{N}$, as well as analogous results for general weight $k\in2\mathbb{N}$ and the full and twist-minimal spaces $S_k(\Gamma_0(N))$, $S_k^{\rm min}(\Gamma_0(N))$.
We investigate two related problems concerning the dimension of joint eigenspaces of the Laplace--Beltrami operator and a finite set of Hecke operators on $\mathbb{X}=\mathrm{PGL}_2(\mathbb{Z})\backslash \mathbb{H}$. First, we consider Linnik problem for Maass--Hecke cuspforms. We prove that the dimension of such a joint eigenspace, for Maass--Hecke cuspforms with eigenparameter in $[T, T+1]$, associated to Hecke operators $T_p$ with $p < (\log T)^\alpha$ is $O_\epsilon (T^{{\frac{4}{\alpha}} + \epsilon})$. For this, we prove a new form of spectral large sieve inequality for symmetric-squares of Maass--Hecke cuspforms, by exploiting the fact that the forms under consideration are unramified at every non-archimedean place. Second, we consider the effective multiplicity one problem, determining the minimal number of Hecke eigenvalues needed to distinguish two Maass--Hecke cusp forms with the same Laplace eigenvalue. We prove that for any fixed $\eta>0$, if two Maass--Hecke cuspforms, with eigenparameter $t$, share Hecke eigenvalues $\lambda_{\phi_1}(n) = \lambda_{\phi_2}(n)$ for all $n < \eta t$, and $t$ is sufficiently large, then the forms are proportional. This improves the previously known best bound due to Huntley in 1991. Key ingredient for the improvement is the result by Brook and Lindenstrauss that classifies quantum limits of a joint eigenfunction of a Hecke operator and the Laplace--Beltrami operator on arithmetic hyperbolic surfaces. We also discuss generalizations of these results to Maass--Hecke cuspforms on $\mathrm{PGL}_2$ over arbitrary number field.
We prove the existence of murmurations in the family of Maass forms of weight 0 and level 1 with their Laplace eigenvalue parameter going to infinity (i.e., correlations between the parity and Hecke eigenvalues at primes growing in proportion to the analytic conductor).
We obtain an upper bound for the dimension of the cuspidal automorphic forms for $\mathrm{GL}_2$ over a number field, whose archimedean local representations are not tempered. More precisely, we prove the following result. Let $F$ be a number field and $\mathbb{A}_{F}$ be the ring of adeles of $F$. Let $\mathcal{O}_{F}$ be the ring of integers of $F$. Let $\mathfrak{X}_{F,\mathrm{ex}}$ be the set of irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations $\pi$ of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{A}_{F})$ with the trivial central character such that for each archimedean place $v$ of $F$, the local representation of $\pi$ at $v$ is an unramified principal series and is not tempered. For an ideal $J$ of $\mathcal{O}_{F}$, let $\mathrm{K}_{0}(J)$ be the subgroup of $\mathrm{GL}_2(\mathbb{A}_{F})$ corresponding to $\Gamma_0(J) \subset \mathrm{SL}_2(\mathcal{O}_F)$. Let $r_1$ be the number of real embeddings of $F$ and $r_2$ be the number of conjugate pairs of complex embeddings of $F$. Using the Arthur-Selberg trace formula, we have \begin{equation*} \sum_{\pi\in \mathfrak{X}_{F,\mathrm{ex}}} \dim \pi^{\mathrm{K}_0(J)} \ll_{F} \frac{[\mathrm{SL}_2(\mathcal{O}_{F}) : \Gamma_0(J)]}{(\log (N_{F/\mathbb{Q}}(J)))^{2r_1+3r_2}} \quad \text{ as } \quad |N_{F/\mathbb{Q}}(J)|\to \infty. \end{equation*} From this result, we obtain the result on an upper bound for the number of Hecke-Maass cusp forms of weight $0$ on $\Gamma_0(N)$ which do not satisfy the Selberg eigenvalue conjecture.
Let $M$ be a finite volume hyperbolic Riemann surface with arbitrary signature, and let $\chi$ be an arbitrary $m$-dimensional multiplier system of weight $k$. Let $R(s,\chi)$ be the associated Ruelle zeta function, and $\varphi(s,\chi)$ the determinant of the scattering matrix. We prove the functional equation that $R(s,\chi)\varphi(s,\chi) = R(-s,\chi)\varphi(s,\chi)H(s,\chi)$ where $H(s,\chi)$ is a meromorphic function of order one explicitly determined using the topological data of $M$ and of $\chi$, and the trigonometric function $\sin(s)$. From this, we determine the order of the divisor of $R(s,\chi)$ at $s=0$ and compute the lead coefficient in its Laurent expansion at $s=0$. When combined with results by Kitano and by Yamaguchi, we prove further instances of the Fried conjecture, which states that the R-torsion of the above data is simply expressed in terms of $R(0,\chi)$.
We prove the existence of "murmurations" in the family of holomorphic modular forms of level $1$ and weight $k\to\infty$, that is, correlations between their root numbers and Hecke eigenvalues at primes growing in proportion to the analytic conductor. This is the first demonstration of murmurations in an archimedean family.
We prove an effective version of a result due to Einsiedler, Mozes, Shah and Shapira on the asymptotic distribution of primitive rational points on expanding closed horospheres in the space of lattices. Key ingredients of our proof include recent bounds on matrix Kloosterman sums due to Erd\'elyi and T\'oth, results by Clozel, Oh and Ullmo on the effective equidistribution of Hecke points, and Rogers' integration formula in the geometry of numbers. As an application of the main theorem, we also obtain a result on the limit distribution of the number of small solutions of a random system of linear congruences to a large modulus. Furthermore, as a by-product of our proofs, we obtain a sharp bound on the number of nonsquare matrices over a finite field $\mathbb{F}_p$ with small entries and of a given size and rank.
We define an analogue of the Bol operator on spaces of weakly holomorphic modular forms of half-integral weight. We establish its main properties and relation with other objects.
We extend Venkatesh's proof of the converse theorem for classical holomorphic modular forms to arbitrary level and character. The method of proof, via the Petersson trace formula, allows us to treat arbitrary degree 2 gamma factors of Selberg class type.
We prove that there are infinitely many Maass--Hecke cuspforms over the field $\mathbb{Q}[\sqrt{-3}]$ such that the corresponding symmetric cube $L$-series does not vanish at the center of the critical strip. This is done by using a result of Ginzburg, Jiang and Rallis which shows that the symmetric cube non-vanishing happens if and only if a certain triple product integral involving the cusp form and the cubic theta function on $\mathbb{Q}[\sqrt{-3}]$ does not vanish. We use spectral theory and the properties of the cubic theta function to show that the non-vanishing of this triple product occurs for infinitely many cusp forms. We also formulate a conjecture about the meaning of the absolute value squared of the triple product which is reminiscent of Watson's identity.
We introduce an L-series associated with harmonic Maass forms and prove their functional equations. We establish converse theorems for these L-series and, as an application, we formulate and prove a summation formula for the holomorphic part of a harmonic lift of a given cusp form.
We obtain a first moment formula for Rankin-Selberg convolution $L$-series of holomorphic modular forms or Maass forms of arbitrary level on $GL(2)$, with an orthonormal basis of Maass forms. One consequence is the best result to date, uniform in level, spectral value and weight, for the equality of two Maass or holomorphic cusp forms if their Rankin-Selberg convolutions with the orthonormal basis of Mass forms $u_j$ is equal at the center of the critical strip for sufficiently many $u_j$. The main novelty of our approach is the new way the error terms are treated. They are brought into an exact form that provides optimal estimates for the first moment case, and also provide a basis for an extension to second moments, which will appear in another work.
In this paper we work over $\Gamma_0(N)$, for any $N$ and write the spectral moment of a product of two distinct Rankin-Selberg convolutions at a general point on the critical line $\frac{1}{2}+it$ as a main term plus a sharp error term in the $t$ aspect and the spectral aspect. As a result we obtain hybrid Weyl type subconvexity results in the $t$ and spectral aspects. Also, for fixed modular forms $f$, $g$ of even weight $k\geq 4$ we show there exists a Maass cusp form $u_j$ such that $L(1/2, f\times u_j)$, $L(1/2, g\times u_j)$ are simultaneous non-zero.
We discuss practical and some theoretical aspects of computing a database of classical modular forms in the L-functions and Modular Forms Database (LMFDB).
We study the local zeta integrals attached to a pair of generic representations $(\pi,\tau)$ of $GL_n\times GL_m$, $n>m$, over a $p$-adic field. Through a process of unipotent averaging we produce a pair of corresponding Whittaker functions whose zeta integral is non-zero, and we express this integral in terms of the Langlands parameters of $\pi$ and $\tau$. In many cases, these Whittaker functions also serve as a test vector for the associated Rankin-Selberg (local) $L$-function.
Let $q:=e^{2 \pi iz}$, where $z \in \mathbb{H}$. For an even integer $k$, let $f(z):=q^h\prod_{m=1}^{\infty}(1-q^m)^{c(m)}$ be a meromorphic modular form of weight $k$ on $\Gamma_0(N)$. For a positive integer $m$, let $T_m$ be the $m$th Hecke operator and $D$ be a divisor of a modular curve with level $N$. Both subjects, the exponents $c(m)$ of a modular form and the distribution of the points in the support of $T_m. D$, have been widely investigated. When the level $N$ is one, Bruinier, Kohnen, and Ono obtained, in terms of the values of $j$-invariant function, identities between the exponents $c(m)$ of a modular form and the points in the support of $T_m.D$. In this paper, we extend this result to general $\Gamma_0(N)$ in terms of values of harmonic weak Maass forms of weight $0$. By the distribution of Hecke points, this applies to obtain an asymptotic behaviour of convolutions of sums of divisors of an integer and sums of exponents of a modular form.
We prove an effective version of a result due to Einsiedler, Mozes, Shah and Shapira who established the equidistribution of primitive rational points on expanding horospheres in the space of unimodular lattices in at least $3$ dimensions. Their proof uses techniques from homogeneous dynamics and relies in particular on measure-classification theorems -- an approach which does not lend itself to effective bounds. We implement a strategy based on spectral theory, Fourier analysis and Weil's bound for Kloosterman sums in order to quantify the rate of equidistribution for a specific horospherical subgroup in any dimension. We apply our result to provide a rate of convergence to the limiting distribution for the appropriately rescaled diameters of random circulant graphs.
