On multiplicative dependence of values of rational functions and a generalisation of the Northcott theorem

In this paper, we study multiplicative dependence of values of polynomials or rational functions over a number field. As an application, we obtain new results on multiplicative dependence in the orbits of a univariate polynomial dynamical system. We also obtain a broad generalisation of the Northcott theorem replacing the finiteness of preperiodic points from a given number field by the finiteness of initial points with two multiplicatively dependent elements in their orbits.

The Sato-Tate Distribution in Thin Parametric Families of Elliptic Curves

We obtain new results concerning the Sato-Tate conjecture on the distribution of Frobenius traces over single and double parametric families of elliptic curves. We consider these curves for values of parameters having prescribed arithmetic structure: product sets, geometric progressions, and most significantly prime numbers. In particular, some families are much thinner than the ones previously studied.

On the number of integer polynomials with multiplicatively dependent roots

In this paper, we give some counting results on integer polynomials of fixed degree and bounded height whose distinct non-zero roots are multiplicatively dependent. These include sharp lower bounds, upper bounds and asymptotic formulas for various cases, although in general there is a logarithmic gap between lower and upper bounds.

On abelian multiplicatively dependent points on a curve in a torus

We show, under some natural conditions, that the set of abelian (and thus also cyclotomic) multiplicatively dependent points on an irreducible curve over a number field is a finite union of preimages of roots of unity by a certain finite set of primitive characters from $\Gm^n$ to $\Gm$ restricted to the curve, and a finite set. We also introduce the notion of primitive multiplicative dependence and obtain a finiteness result for primitively multiplicatively dependent points defined over a so-called Bogomolov extension of a number field.

On Functional Graphs of Quadratic Polynomials

We study functional graphs generated by quadratic polynomials over prime fields. We introduce efficient algorithms for methodical computations and provide the values of various direct and cumulative statistical parameters of interest. These include: the number of connected functional graphs, the number of graphs having a maximal cycle, the number of cycles of fixed size, the number of components of fixed size, as well as the shape of trees extracted from functional graphs. We particularly focus on connected functional graphs, that is, the graphs which contain only one component (and thus only one cycle). Based on the results of our computations, we formulate several conjectures highlighting the similarities and differences between these functional graphs and random mappings.

On two functions arising in the study of the Euler and Carmichael quotients

We investigate two arithmetic functions naturally occurring in the study of the Euler and Carmichael quotients. The functions are related to the frequency of vanishing of the Euler and Carmichael quotients. We obtain several results concerning the relations between these functions as well as their typical and extreme values.

On distances in lattices from algebraic number fields

In this paper, we study a classical construction of lattices from number fields and obtain a series of new results about their minimum distance and other characteristics by introducing a new measure of algebraic numbers. In particular, we show that when the number fields have few complex embeddings, the minimum distances of these lattices can be computed exactly.

The Arithmetic of Carmichael Quotients

Carmichael quotients for an integer $m\ge 2$ are introduced analogous to Fermat quotients, by using Carmichael function $λ(m)$. Various properties of these new quotients are investigated, such as basic arithmetic properties, sequences derived from Carmichael quotients, Carmichael-Wieferich numbers, and so on. Finally, we link Carmichael quotients to perfect nonlinear functions.

On the quantitative dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture

The dynamical Mordell-Lang conjecture concerns the structure of the intersection of an orbit in an algebraic dynamical system and an algebraic variety. In this paper, we bound the size of this intersection for various cases when it is finite.

Lang-Trotter and Sato-Tate Distributions in Single and Double Parametric Families of Elliptic Curves

We obtain new results concerning Lang-Trotter conjecture on Frobenius traces and Frobenius fields over single and double parametric families of elliptic curves. We also obtain similar results with respect to the Sato-Tate conjecture. In particular, we improve a result of A.C. Cojocaru and the second author (2008) towards the Lang-Trotter conjecture on average for polynomially parameterized families of elliptic curves when the parameter runs through a set of rational numbers of bounded height. Some of the families we consider are much thinner than the ones previously studied.

Positive density of integer polynomials with some prescribed properties

In this paper, we show that various kinds of integer polynomials with prescribed properties of their roots have positive density. For example, we prove that almost all integer polynomials have exactly one or two roots with maximal modulus. We also show that for any positive integer $n$ and any set of $n$ distinct points symmetric with respect to the real line, there is a positive density of integer polynomials of degree $n$, height at most $H$ and Galois group $S_n$ whose roots are close to the given $n$ points.

Functional Graphs of Polynomials over Finite Fields

Given a function $f$ in a finite field ${\mathbb F}_q$ of $q$ elements, we define the functional graph of $f$ as a directed graph on $q$ nodes labelled by the elements of ${\mathbb F}_q$ where there is an edge from $u$ to $v$ if and only if $f(u) = v$. We obtain some theoretic estimates on the number of non-isomorphic graphs generated by all polynomials of a given degree. We then develop a simple and practical algorithm to test the isomorphism of quadratic polynomials that has linear memory and time complexities. Furthermore, we extend this isomorphism testing algorithm to the general case of functional graphs, and prove that, while its time complexity increases only slightly, its memory complexity remains linear. We exploit this algorithm to provide an upper bound on the number of functional graphs corresponding to polynomials of degree $d$ over ${\mathbb F}_q$. Finally, we present some numerical results and compare function graphs of quadratic polynomials with those generated by random maps and pose interesting new problems.

Counting degenerate polynomials of fixed degree and bounded height

In this paper, we give sharp upper and lower bounds for the number of degenerate monic (and arbitrary, not necessarily monic) polynomials with integer coefficients of fixed degree $n \ge 2$ and height bounded by $H \ge 2$. The polynomial is called degenerate if it has two distinct roots whose quotient is a root of unity. In particular, our bounds imply that non-degenerate linear recurrence sequences can be generated randomly.

On the lattices from elliptic curves over finite fields

In this paper, we continue the recent work of Fukshansky and Maharaj on lattices from elliptic curves over finite fields. We show that there exist bases formed by minimal vectors for these lattices except only one case. We also compute their determinants, and obtain sharp bounds for the covering radius.
