Type IIn Supernova SN 2010jl: Optical Observations for Over 500 Days After Explosion

We present extensive optical observations of a Type IIn supernova (SN) 2010jl for the first 1.5 years after the discovery. The UBVRI light curves demonstrated an interesting two-stage evolution during the nebular phase, which almost flatten out after about 90 days from the optical maximum. SN 2010jl has one of the highest intrinsic H_alpha luminosity ever recorded for a SN IIn, especially at late phase, suggesting a strong interaction of SN ejecta with the dense circumstellar material (CSM) ejected by the progenitor. This is also indicated by the remarkably strong Balmer lines persisting in the optical spectra. One interesting spectral evolution about SN 2010jl is the appearance of asymmetry of the Balmer lines. These lines can be well decomposed into a narrow component and an intermediate-width component. The intermediate-width component showed a steady increase in both strength and blueshift with time until t ~ 400 days after maximum, but it became less blueshifted at t ~ 500 days when the line profile appeared relatively symmetric again. Owing to that a pure reddening effect will lead to a sudden decline of the light curves and a progressive blueshift of the spectral lines, we therefore propose that the asymmetric profiles of H lines seen in SN 2010jl is unlikely due to the extinction by newly formed dust inside the ejecta, contrary to the explanation by some early studies. Based on a simple CSM-interaction model, we speculate that the progenitor of SN 2010jl may suffer a gigantic mass loss (~ 30-50 M_sun) in a few decades before explosion. Considering a slow moving stellar wind (e.g., ~ 28 km/s) inferred for the preexisting, dense CSM shell and the extremely high mass-loss rate (1-2 M_sun per yr), we suggest that the progenitor of SN 2010jl might have experienced a red supergiant stage and explode finally as a post-red supergiant star with an initial mass above 30-40 M_sun.

Efficient Multi-way Theta-Join Processing Using MapReduce

Multi-way Theta-join queries are powerful in describing complex relations and therefore widely employed in real practices. However, existing solutions from traditional distributed and parallel databases for multi-way Theta-join queries cannot be easily extended to fit a shared-nothing distributed computing paradigm, which is proven to be able to support OLAP applications over immense data volumes. In this work, we study the problem of efficient processing of multi-way Theta-join queries using MapReduce from a cost-effective perspective. Although there have been some works using the (key, value) pair-based programming model to support join operations, efficient processing of multi-way Theta-join queries has never been fully explored. The substantial challenge lies in, given a number of processing units (that can run Map or Reduce tasks), mapping a multi-way Theta-join query to a number of MapReduce jobs and having them executed in a well scheduled sequence, such that the total processing time span is minimized. Our solution mainly includes two parts: 1) cost metrics for both single MapReduce job and a number of MapReduce jobs executed in a certain order; 2) the efficient execution of a chain-typed Theta-join with only one MapReduce job. Comparing with the query evaluation strategy proposed in [23] and the widely adopted Pig Latin and Hive SQL solutions, our method achieves significant improvement of the join processing efficiency.

Bayes Factor Consistency for Unbalanced ANOVA Models

In practical situations, most experimental designs often yield unbalanced data which have different numbers of observations per unit because of cost constraints, or missing data, etc. In this paper, we consider the Bayesian approach to hypothesis testing or model selection under the one-way unbalanced fixed-effects ANOVA model. We adopt Zellner's g-prior with the beta-prime distribution for g, which results in an explicit closed-form expression of the Bayes factor without integral representation. Furthermore, we investigate the model selection consistency of the Bayes factor under three different asymptotic scenarios: either the number of units goes to infinity, the number of observations per unit goes to infinity, or both go to infinity. The results presented extend some existing ones of the Bayes factor for the balanced ANOVA models in the literature.

VLBI observations of 10 CSO candidates: expansion velocities of hot spots

Observations of ten Compact Symmetric Objects ({\rm CSO}) candidates have been made with the Very Long Baseline Array at 8.4 GHz in 2005 and with a combined Chinese and European VLBI array at 8.4 GHz in 2009. The 2009 observations incorporate for the first time the two new Chinese telescopes at Miyun and Kunming for international astrophysical observations. The observational data, in combination with archival VLBA data from previous epochs, have been used to derive the proper motions of the VLBI components. Because of the long time baseline of $\sim$16 years of the VLBI data sets, the expansion velocities of the hot spots can be measured at an accuracy as high as $\sim$1.3 $μ$as yr$^{-1}$. Six of the ten sources are identified as CSOs with a typical double or triple morphology on the basis of both spectral index maps and their mirror-symmetry of proper motions of the terminal hot spots. The compact double source J1324+4048 is also identified as a CSO candidate. Among the three remaining sources, J1756+5748 and J2312+3847 are identified as core-jet sources with proper motions of their jet components relating to systemic source expansion. The third source J0017+5312 is likely also a core-jet source, but a robust detection of a core is needed for an unambiguous identification. The kinematic ages of the CSOs derived from proper motions range from 300 to 2500 years. The kinematic age distribution of the CSOs confirm an overabundance of compact young CSOs with ages less than 500 years. CSOs with known kinematic ages may be used to study the dynamical evolution of extragalactic radio sources at early stages.

gSketch: On Query Estimation in Graph Streams

Many dynamic applications are built upon large network infrastructures, such as social networks, communication networks, biological networks and the Web. Such applications create data that can be naturally modeled as graph streams, in which edges of the underlying graph are received and updated sequentially in a form of a stream. It is often necessary and important to summarize the behavior of graph streams in order to enable effective query processing. However, the sheer size and dynamic nature of graph streams present an enormous challenge to existing graph management techniques. In this paper, we propose a new graph sketch method, gSketch, which combines well studied synopses for traditional data streams with a sketch partitioning technique, to estimate and optimize the responses to basic queries on graph streams. We consider two different scenarios for query estimation: (1) A graph stream sample is available; (2) Both a graph stream sample and a query workload sample are available. Algorithms for different scenarios are designed respectively by partitioning a global sketch to a group of localized sketches in order to optimize the query estimation accuracy. We perform extensive experimental studies on both real and synthetic data sets and demonstrate the power and robustness of gSketch in comparison with the state-of-the-art global sketch method.

Multiferroic PbFe12O19 Ceramics

PbFe12O19 (PFO) powders in hexagonal structure have been synthesized by sol-gel process using lead acetate, glycerin and ferric acetylacetonate as the precursor. PbFe12O19 ceramics were obtained by sintering the PbFe12O19 powders at 1000\degree C for 1 hour. Distorted flaky hexahedron grains are frequently observed in the SEM images of sintered PbFe12O19 ceramics. Large spontaneous polarization was observed in PbFe12O19 ceramic at room temperature, exhibiting a clear ferroelectric hysteresis loop. The remnant polarization of PbFe12O19 ceramic is estimated to be Pr~21μC/cm2. The distortion of hexahedron grains as well as the Fe oxygen octahedron in its perovskite-like hexagonal unit cell is proposed to be the origin of polarization in PbFe12O19 ceramics. Meanwhile, PbFe12O19 ceramics demonstrate strong ferromagnetism at room temperature. Simultaneous occurrence of large ferroelectricity and strong ferromagnetism in PbFe12O19 ceramics holds promise for its application in new generation of electronic devices as a practical multiferroic candidate in single phase.

Star-Forming Galaxies at z~2 in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field

Using a simple color selection based on B-, z- and K-band photometry, BzK= (z-K)_AB-(B-z)_AB>-0.2, we picked out 52 star-forming galaxies at 1.4<z<2.5 (sBzKs) from a K-band selected sample (K_Vega<22.0) in an area of ~5.5 arcmin^2 of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF). We develop a new photometric redshift method, and the error in our photometric redshifts is less than 0.02(1+z). From the photometric redshift distribution, we find the BzK color criterion can be used to select star-forming galaxies at 1.4<z<2.5 with K_Vega<22.0. Down to K_Vega<22.0, the number counts of sBzKs increase linearly with the K-band magnitude; the sBzKs are strongly clustered, and most of them have irregular morphologies on the ACS images. They have a median reddening of E(B-V)~0.28, an average star formation rate of ~36 M_sun/yr and a typical stellar mass of 10^10 M_sun. The UV criterion for the galaxies at z~2 can select most of the faint sBzKs in the UDF, but it does not work well for bright, massive, highly-reddened, actively star-forming galaxies.

Classification of Extremely Red Objects in the COSMOS Field

We present a study of the classification of z ~1 extremely red objects (EROs), using a combination of HST/ACS, Spitzer/IRAC, and ground-based images of the COSMOS field. Our sample includes about 5300 EROs with i-Ks>2.45 (AB, equivalently I-Ks=4 in Vega) and Ks<=21.1 (AB). For EROs in our sample, we compute, using the ACS F814W images, their concentration, asymmetry, as well as their Gini coefficient and the second moment of the brightest 20% of their light. Using those morphology parameters and the Spitzer/IRAC [3.6]-[8.0] color, the spectral energy distribution (SED) fitting method, we classify EROs into two classes: old galaxies (OGs) and young, dusty starburst galaxies (DGs). We found that the fraction of OGs and DGs in our sample is similar, about 48 percentages of EROs in our sample are OGs, and 52 percentages of them are DGs. To reduce the redundancy of these three different classification methods, we performed a principal component analysis on the measurements of EROs, and find that morphology parameters and SEDs are efficient in segregating OGs and DGs. The [3.6]-[8.0] color, which depends on reddening, redshift, and photometric accuracy, is difficult to separate EROs around the discriminating line between starburst and elliptical. We investigate the dependence of the fraction of EROs on their observational properties, and the results suggest that DGs become increasingly important at fainter magnitudes, redder colors, and higher redshifts.

LinkedCT: A Linked Data Space for Clinical Trials

The Linked Clinical Trials (LinkedCT) project aims at publishing the first open semantic web data source for clinical trials data. The database exposed by LinkedCT is generated by (1) transforming existing data sources of clinical trials into RDF, and (2) discovering semantic links between the records in the trials data and several other data sources. In this paper, we discuss several challenges involved in these two steps and present the methodology used in LinkedCT to overcome these challenges. Our approach for semantic link discovery involves using state-of-the-art approximate string matching techniques combined with ontology-based semantic matching of the records, all performed in a declarative and easy-to-use framework. We present an evaluation of the performance of our proposed techniques in several link discovery scenarios in LinkedCT.

Classification of Extremely Red Objects in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field

In this paper we present a quantitative study of the classification of Extremely Red Objects (EROs). The analysis is based on the multi-band spatial- and ground-based observations (HST/ACS-$BViz$, HST/NICMOS-$JH$, VLT-$JHK$) in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF). Over a total sky area of 5.50 arcmin$^2$ in the UDF, we select 24 EROs with the color criterion $(i-K)_{\rm Vega}>3.9$, corresponding to $(I-K)_{\rm Vega}\gsim4.0$, down to $\Kv=22$. We develop four methods to classify EROs into Old passively evolving Galaxies (OGs) and Dusty star-forming Galaxies (DGs), including $(i-K)$ vs. $(J-K)$ color diagram, spectral energy distribution fitting method, Spitzer MIPS 24 $μ$m image matching, and nonparametric measure of galaxy morphology, and found that the classification results from these methods agree well. Using these four classification methods, we classify our EROs sample into 6 OGs and 8 DGs to $\Kv<20.5$, and 8 OGs and 16 DGs to $\Kv<22$, respectively. The fraction of DGs increases from 8/14 at $\Kv<20.5$ to 16/24 at $\Kv<22$. To study the morphology of galaxies with its wavelength, we measure the central concentration and the Gini coefficient for the 24 EROs in our sample in HST/ACS-$i,z$ and HST/NICMOS-$J,H$ bands. We find that the morphological parameters of galaxies in our sample depend on the wavelength of observation, which suggests that caution is necessary when comparing single wavelength band images of galaxies at a variety of redshifts.

The Molecular Ridge Close to 30 Doradus in the Large Magellanic Cloud

With the ATNF Mopra telescope we are performing a survey in the 12CO(1-0) line to map the molecular gas in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). For some regions we also obtained interferometric maps of the high density gas tracers HCO+ and HCN with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA). Here we discuss the properties of the elongated molecular complex that stretches about 2 kpc southward from 30 Doradus. Our data suggests that the complex, which we refer to as the ``molecular ridge,'' is not a coherent feature but consists of many smaller clumps that share the same formation history. Likely molecular cloud formation triggers are shocks and shearing forces that are present in the surrounding south-eastern HI overdensity region, a region influenced by strong ram pressure and tidal forces. The molecular ridge is at the western edge of the the overdensity region where a bifurcated velocity structure transitions into a single disk velocity component. We find that the 12CO(1-0) and HI emission peaks in the molecular ridge are typically near each other but never coincide. A likely explanation is the conversion of warmer, low-opacity HI to colder, high-opacity HI from which H2 subsequently forms. On smaller scales, we find that very dense molecular gas, as traced by interferometric HCO+ and HCN maps, is associated with star formation along shocked filaments and with rims of expanding shell-like structures, both created by feedback from massive stars.

Wide Field Surveys of Herbig-Haro Objects

We report our new results from wide-field surveys of Herbig-Haro (HH) objects in the nearby star forming regions. The surveys covered approximately 56 degree in Perseus, Taurus, Orion, Monoceros, and other regions. Using refined techniques, we discovered in total 68 HH objects, of which 32 were in Perseus, 4 in Taurus, 13 in Orion, 18 in Monoceros, and 1 in S287 regions. The newly discovered HH objects demonstrate a great variety of morphological structures, including 5 jets, 7 arcs, 12 cirri or cirrus groups, 13 patches, and many knots. These objects provide a new comprehensive database for the study of HH objects in the regions of recent star formation.
