Monolithically integrated high-power narrow-bandwidth microdisk laser

Integrated on-chip microdisk lasers have attracted great attention as a light source of compact size, low lasing threshold and narrow bandwidth. However, challenges remain unresolved in terms of single mode operation at high output power while maintaining the ultra-narrow bandwidth. In this work, we demonstrate monolithically integrated on-chip single-frequency microdisk lasers coupled with bus-waveguides fabricated by photolithography assisted chemo-mechanical etching. Owing to the high-Q factor of a polygon whispering gallery mode formed in the microdisk and long cavity lengths (e.g., 409 um and 1 mm), a microdisk laser with a narrow linewidth of 0.11 MHz and a maximum output power of 62.1 uW has been achieved at room temperature.

Development of robust X-bar charts with unequal sample sizes

The traditional variable control charts, such as the X-bar chart, are widely used to monitor variation in a process. They have been shown to perform well for monitoring processes under the general assumptions that the observations are normally distributed without data contamination and that the sample sizes from the process are all equal. However, these two assumptions may not be met and satisfied in many practical applications and thus make them potentially limited for widespread application especially in production processes. In this paper, we alleviate this limitation by providing a novel method for constructing the robust X-bar control charts, which can simultaneously deal with both data contamination and unequal sample sizes. The proposed method for the process parameters is optimal in a sense of the best linear unbiased estimation. Numerical results from extensive Monte Carlo simulations and a real data analysis reveal that traditional control charts seriously underperform for monitoring process in the presence of data contamination and are extremely sensitive to even a single contaminated value, while the proposed robust control charts outperform in a manner that is comparable with the traditional ones, whereas they are far superior when the data are contaminated by outliers.

Integrated vortex soliton microcombs

The frequency and orbital angular momentum (OAM) are independent physical properties of light that both offer unbounded degrees of freedom. However, creating, processing, and detecting high-dimensional OAM states have been a pivot and long-lasting task, as the complexity of the required optical systems scales up drastically with the OAM dimension. On the other hand, mature toolboxes -- such as optical frequency combs -- have been developed in the frequency domain for parallel measurements with excellent fidelity. Here we correlate the two dimensions into an equidistant comb structure on a photonic chip. Dissipative optical solitons formed in a nonlinear microresonator are emitted through the engraved angular gratings with each comb line carrying distinct OAM. Such one-to-one correspondence between the OAM and frequencies manifests state-of-the-art extinction ratios over 18.5 dB, enabling precision spectroscopy of optical vortices. The demonstrated vortex soliton microcombs provide coherent light sources that are multiplexed in the spatial and frequency domain, having the potential to establish a new modus operandi of high-dimensional structured light.

Meta-Auto-Decoder for Solving Parametric Partial Differential Equations

Many important problems in science and engineering require solving the so-called parametric partial differential equations (PDEs), i.e., PDEs with different physical parameters, boundary conditions, shapes of computation domains, etc. Recently, building learning-based numerical solvers for parametric PDEs has become an emerging new field. One category of methods such as the Deep Galerkin Method (DGM) and Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) aim to approximate the solution of the PDEs. They are typically unsupervised and mesh-free, but require going through the time-consuming network training process from scratch for each set of parameters of the PDE. Another category of methods such as Fourier Neural Operator (FNO) and Deep Operator Network (DeepONet) try to approximate the solution mapping directly. Being fast with only one forward inference for each PDE parameter without retraining, they often require a large corpus of paired input-output observations drawn from numerical simulations, and most of them need a predefined mesh as well. In this paper, we propose Meta-Auto-Decoder (MAD), a mesh-free and unsupervised deep learning method that enables the pre-trained model to be quickly adapted to equation instances by implicitly encoding (possibly heterogenous) PDE parameters as latent vectors. The proposed method MAD can be interpreted by manifold learning in infinite-dimensional spaces, granting it a geometric insight. Extensive numerical experiments show that the MAD method exhibits faster convergence speed without losing accuracy than other deep learning-based methods. Micropascal-sensitivity ultrasound sensors based on optical microcavities

Whispering gallery mode (WGM) microcavities have been widely used for high-sensitivity ultrasound detection, due to their optical and mechanical resonances enhanced sensitivity. The ultrasound sensitivity of the cavity optomechanical system is fundamentally limited by the thermal noise. In this work, we theoretically and experimentally investigate the thermal-noise-limited sensitivity of a WGM microdisk ultrasound sensor, and optimize the sensitivity by varying the radius and thickness of the microdisk, as well as using a trench structure around the disk. Using a microdisk with a radius of 300 um and thickness of 2 um, a peak sensitivity of 1.18 uPa Hz^{-1/2} is achieved at 82.6 kHz, which is to our knowledge the record sensitivity among the cavity optomechanical ultrasound sensors. Such high sensitivity can improve the detection range of air-coupled ultrasound sensing technology.

Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Aided Spectrum Sharing Coexisting with Multiple Primary Networks

Considering the spectrum sharing system (SSS) coexisting with multiple primary networks, we have employed a well-designed reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) to control the radio environments of wireless channels and relieve the scarcity of the spectrum resource in this work. Specifically, the enhancement of the spectral efficiency of the secondary user in the considered SSS is decomposed into two subproblems which are a second-order cone programming (SOCP) and a fractional programming of the convex quadratic form (CQFP), respectively, to optimize alternatively the beamforming vector at the secondary access point (S-AP) and the reflecting coefficients at the RIS. The SOCP subproblem is shown as a concave problem, which can be solved optimally using standard convex optimization tools. The CQFP subproblem can be solved by a low-complexity method of gradient-based linearization with domain (GLD), providing a sub-optimal solution for fast deployment. Taking the discrete phase control at the RIS into account, a nearest point searching with penalty (NPSP) method is also developed, realizing the discretization of the phase shifts of the RIS in practice. The simulation results indicate that both GLD and NPSP can achieve an excellent performance.

Violation Probabilities of AoI and PAoI and Optimal Arrival Rate Allocation for the IoT-based Multi-Source Status Update System

Lots of real-time applications over Internet of things (IoT)-based status update systems have imperative demands on information freshness, which is usually evaluated by age of information (AoI). Compared to the average AoI and peak AoI (PAoI), violation probabilities and distributions of AoI and PAoI characterize the timeliness in more details. This paper studies the timeliness of the IoT-based multi-source status update system. By modeling the system as a multi-source M/G/1/1 bufferless preemptive queue, general formulas of violation probabilities and probability density functions (p.d.f.s) of AoI and PAoI are derived with a time-domain approach. For the case with negativeexponentially distributed service time, the violation probabilities and p.d.f.s are obtained in closed form. Moreover, the maximal violation probabilities of AoI and PAoI are proposed to characterize the overall timeliness. To improve the overall timeliness under the resource constraint of IoT-device, the arrival rate allocation scheme is used to minimize the maximal violation probabilities. It is proved that the optimal arrival rates can be found by convex optimization algorithms. In addition, it is obtained that the minimum of maximal violation probability of AoI (or PAoI) is achieved only if all violation probabilities of AoI (or PAoI) are equal. Finally, numerical results verify the theoretical analysis and show the effectiveness of the arrival rate allocation scheme.

Maximal estimates for the bilinear Riesz means on Heisenberg groups

In this article, we investigate the maximal bilinear Riesz means $S^{α}_{*}$ associated to the sublaplacian on the Heisenberg group. We prove that the operator $S^{α}_{*}$ is bounded from $L^{p_{1}}\times L^{p_{2}}$ into $% L^{p}$ for $2\leq p_{1}, p_{2}\leq \infty $ and $1/p=1/p_{1}+1/p_{2}$ when $% α$ is large than a suitable smoothness index $α(p_{1},p_{2})$. For obtaining a lower index $α(p_{1},p_{2})$, we define two important auxiliary operators and investigate their $L^{p}$ estimates, which play a key role in our proof.

Riesz means and bilinear Riesz means on Métivier groups

In this paper, we investigate the $L^{p}$-boundedness of the Riesz means and the $L^{p_{1}}\times L^{p_{2}}\rightarrow L^{p}$ boundedness of the bilinear Riesz means on Métivier groups. Métivier groups are generalization of Heisenberg groups and general H-type groups. Because general Métivier groups only satisfy the non-degeneracy condition and have high-dimensional centre, we have to use different methods and techniques from those on Heisenberg groups and H-type groups.

Modes trimming and clustering in a weakly perturbed high-Q whispering gallery microresonator

In general, a high-Q microresonator can accommodate abundant whispering gallery modes (WGMs) with the mode number increasing with the dimensional sizes of the microresonator. Removing the unnecessary modes while reorganizing the remaining modes is of vital importance, which, however, has been proved challenging and usually results in a tradeoff with the Q of the microresonator. Here, we reveal an effective and controllable mode trimming and clustering mechanism underlying the generation of polygon and star modes in weakly perturbed tapered fiber-coupled lithium niobate whispering gallery microresonators. Experimentally, various polygon and star modes are observed in sequence within a single microresonator by tuning the excitation wavelength or varying the coupling position between a tapered fiber and the circular microresonator, which can be well reproduced with our theoretical model. The finding offers a ubiquitous solution for a broad range of applications requiring elaborate selection and organization of the high-Q WGMs.

Electro-optically tunable low phase-noise microwave synthesizer in an active lithium niobate microdisk

Photonic-based low-phase-noise microwave generation with real-time frequency tuning is crucial for a broad spectrum of subjects, including next-generation wireless communications, radar, metrology, and modern instrumentation. Here, for the first time to the best of our knowledge, narrow-bandwidth dual-wavelength microlasers are generated from nearly degenerate polygon modes in a high-Q active lithium niobate microdisk. The high-Q polygon modes formation with independently controllable resonant wavelengths and free spectral ranges is enabled by the weak perturbation of the whispering gallery microdisk resonators using a tapered fiber. The stable beating signal confirms the low phase-noise achieved in the tunable laser. Owing to the high spatial overlap factors between the two nearly degenerate lasing modes as well as that between the two lasing modes and the pump mode, gain competition between the two modes is suppressed, leading to stable dual-wavelength laser generation and in turn the low noise microwave source. The measured microwave signal shows a linewidth of ~6.87 kHz, a phase noise of ~-123 dBc/Hz, and an electro-optic tuning efficiency of -1.66 MHz/V.

Robust explicit estimation of the log-logistic distribution with applications

The parameters of the log-logistic distribution are generally estimated based on classical methods such as maximum likelihood estimation, whereas these methods usually result in severe biased estimates when the data contain outliers. In this paper, we consider several alternative estimators, which not only have closed-form expressions, but also are quite robust to a certain level of data contamination. We investigate the robustness property of each estimator in terms of the breakdown point. The finite sample performance and effectiveness of these estimators are evaluated through Monte Carlo simulations and a real-data application. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed estimators perform favorably in a manner that they are comparable with the maximum likelihood estimator for the data without contamination and that they provide superior performance in the presence of data contamination.

Monolithically integrated active passive waveguide array fabricated on thin film lithium niobate using a single continuous photolithography process

We demonstrate a robust low-loss optical interface by tiling passive (i.e., without doping of active ions) thin film lithium niobate (TFLN) and active (i.e., doped with rare earth ions) TFLN substrates for monolithic integration of passive/active lithium niobate photonics. The tiled substrates composed of both active and passive areas allow to pattern the mask of the integrated active passive photonic device at once using a single continuous photolithography process. The interface loss of tiled substrate is measured as low as 0.26 dB. Thanks to the stability provided by this approach, a four-channel waveguide amplifier is realized in a straightforward manner, which shows a net gain of ~5 dB at 1550-nm wavelength and that of ~8 dB at 1530-nm wavelength for each channel. The robust low-loss optical interface for passive/active photonic integration will facilitate large-scale high performance photonic devices which require on-chip light sources and amplifiers.

A simple consistent Bayes factor for testing the Kendall rank correlation coefficient

In this paper, we propose a simple and easy-to-implement Bayesian hypothesis test for the presence of an association, described by Kendall's τcoefficient, between two variables measured on at least an ordinal scale. Owing to the absence of the likelihood functions for the data, we employ the asymptotic sampling distributions of the test statistic as the working likelihoods and then specify a truncated normal prior distribution on the noncentrality parameter of the alternative hypothesis, which results in the Bayes factor available in closed form in terms of the cumulative distribution function of the standard normal distribution. Investigating the asymptotic behavior of the Bayes factor we find the conditions of the priors so that it is consistent to whichever the hypothesis is true. Simulation studies and a real-data application are used to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed Bayes factor. It deserves mentioning that the proposed method can be easily covered in undergraduate and graduate courses in nonparametric statistics with an emphasis on students' Bayesian thinking for data analysis.

Electrically driven compact hybrid lithium niobate microring laser

We demonstrate an electrically driven compact hybrid lithium niobate microring laser by butt coupling a commercial 980-nm pump laser diode chip with a high quality Er3+-doped lithium niobate microring chip. Single mode lasing emission at 1531 nm wavelength from the Er3+-doped lithium niobate microring can be observed with the integrated 980-nm laser pumping. The compact hybrid lithium niobate microring laser occupies the chip size of 3 mmx4mmx0.5 mm. The threshold pumping laser power is 6 mW and the threshold current is 0.5 A (operating voltage 1.64 V) in the atmospheric temperature. The spectrum featuring single mode lasing with small linewidth of 0.05 nm is observed. This work explores a robust hybrid lithium niobate microring laser source which has potential applications in coherent optical communication and precision metrology.

Large discrepancy between observations and simulations: Implications for urban air quality in China

Chemical transport models (CTMs) have been widely used to provide instructions for the control of ozone (O3) pollution. However, we find large discrepancies between observation- and model-based urban O3 chemical regimes: volatile organic compound (VOC)-limited regimes over N. China and weak nitrogen oxides (NOx)-limited regimes over S. China in observations, in contrast to simulations with widespread distributions of strong NOx-limited regimes. The conflicting O3 evolutions are caused by underestimated urban NOx concentrations and the possible overestimation of biogenic VOC emissions. Reductions in NOx emissions, in response to regulations, have thus led to an unintended deterioration of O3 pollution over N. China provinces, for example, an increase in surface O3 by approximately 7 ppb over the Sichuan Basin (SCB) in 2014-2020. The NOx-induced urban O3 changes resulted in an increase in premature mortality by approximately 3000 cases in 2015-2020.

FashionVQA: A Domain-Specific Visual Question Answering System

Humans apprehend the world through various sensory modalities, yet language is their predominant communication channel. Machine learning systems need to draw on the same multimodal richness to have informed discourses with humans in natural language; this is particularly true for systems specialized in visually-dense information, such as dialogue, recommendation, and search engines for clothing. To this end, we train a visual question answering (VQA) system to answer complex natural language questions about apparel in fashion photoshoot images. The key to the successful training of our VQA model is the automatic creation of a visual question-answering dataset with 168 million samples from item attributes of 207 thousand images using diverse templates. The sample generation employs a strategy that considers the difficulty of the question-answer pairs to emphasize challenging concepts. Contrary to the recent trends in using several datasets for pretraining the visual question answering models, we focused on keeping the dataset fixed while training various models from scratch to isolate the improvements from model architecture changes. We see that using the same transformer for encoding the question and decoding the answer, as in language models, achieves maximum accuracy, showing that visual language models (VLMs) make the best visual question answering systems for our dataset. The accuracy of the best model surpasses the human expert level, even when answering human-generated questions that are not confined to the template formats. Our approach for generating a large-scale multimodal domain-specific dataset provides a path for training specialized models capable of communicating in natural language. The training of such domain-expert models, e.g., our fashion VLM model, cannot rely solely on the large-scale general-purpose datasets collected from the web.

Deeply Supervised Skin Lesions Diagnosis with Stage and Branch Attention

Accurate and unbiased examinations of skin lesions are critical for the early diagnosis and treatment of skin diseases. Visual features of skin lesions vary significantly because the images are collected from patients with different lesion colours and morphologies by using dissimilar imaging equipment. Recent studies have reported that ensembled convolutional neural networks (CNNs) are practical to classify the images for early diagnosis of skin disorders. However, the practical use of these ensembled CNNs is limited as these networks are heavyweight and inadequate for processing contextual information. Although lightweight networks (e.g., MobileNetV3 and EfficientNet) were developed to achieve parameters reduction for implementing deep neural networks on mobile devices, insufficient depth of feature representation restricts the performance. To address the existing limitations, we develop a new lite and effective neural network, namely HierAttn. The HierAttn applies a novel deep supervision strategy to learn the local and global features by using multi-stage and multi-branch attention mechanisms with only one training loss. The efficacy of HierAttn was evaluated by using the dermoscopy images dataset ISIC2019 and smartphone photos dataset PAD-UFES-20 (PAD2020). The experimental results show that HierAttn achieves the best accuracy and area under the curve (AUC) among the state-of-the-art lightweight networks. The code is available at https://github.com/anthonyweidai/HierAttn.
