Thermal Phase transitions in attractive extended Bose-Hubbard Model with three-body constraint

By means of quantum Monte Carlo simulations implemented with a two-loop update scheme, the finite-temperature phase diagram of a three-body constrained attractive Bose lattice gas is investigated. The nature of the thermal phase transitions around the dimer superfluid and the atomic superfluid is unveiled. We find that the $Z_2$ symmetry-breaking transitions between these two superfluid phases are of first order even at nonzero temperatures. More interestingly, the thermal transition from the dimer superfluid to the normal fluid is found to be consistent with the Kosterlitz-Thouless type but giving an anomalous universal stiffness jump. It demonstrates that this transition is driven by unbinding of pairs of fractional vortices.

Quantum phase transitions of two-species bosons in square lattice

We investigate various quantum phase transitions of attractive two-species bosons in a square lattice. Using the algorithm based on the tensor product states, the phase boundaries of the pair superfluid states with nonzero pair condensate density \emph{and} vanishing atomic condensate density are determined. Various quantum phase transitions across the phase boundaries are characterized. Our work thus provides guides to the experimental search of the pair superfluid phase in lattice boson systems.

Superfluid-Insulator Transitions in Attractive Bose-Hubbard Model with Three-Body Constraint

By means of the method of the effective potential, the phase transitions from the Mott insulating state to either the atomic or the dimer superfluid state in the three-body constrained attractive Bose lattice gas are analyzed. Due to the appearance of the Feshbach resonance coupling between the two kinds of order parameters in the derived effective potential function, it is found that the continuous Mott insulator-to-superfluid transitions can be preempted by first-order ones. Since the employed approach can provide accurate predictions of phase boundaries in the strong coupling limit, where the dimer superfluid phase can emerge, our work hence sheds light on the search of this novel phase in real ultracold Bose gases in optical lattices.

Field Induced Spin Supersolidity in Frustrated Spin-1/2 Spin-Dimer Models

By means of the recently developed algorithm based on the tensor product states, the magnetization process of frustrated spin-1/2 spin-dimer models on a square lattice is investigated. Various field-induced quantum phases are discovered. In particular, clear evidence of a supersolid phase over a finite regime of magnetic field is observed. Critical fields at various field-induced transitions are determined accurately. Our work not only implies that the employed numerical technique can be an efficient algorithm even for the frustrated spin systems, but also shed light on the search of the supersolid phase in real frustrated spin-dimer compounds.

Numerical Study of Spin-1/2 XXZ Model on Square Lattice from Tensor Product States

By means of the recently proposed algorithm based on the tensor product states, the magnetization process of the spin-1/2 anti-ferromagnetic XXZ model on a square lattice is investigated. In the large spin-anisotropy limit, clear evidence of a first-order spin-flip transition is observed as an external magnetic field is increased. Our findings of the critical field and the discrete jumps in various local order parameters are in good agreement with the quantum Monte Carlo data in the literature. Our results imply that this algorithm can be an accurate and efficient numerical approach in studying first-order quantum phase transitions in two dimensions.

Magnetization Plateau of Classical Ising Model on Shastry-Sutherland Lattice

We study the magnetization for the classical antiferromagnetic Ising model on the Shastry-Sutherland lattice using the tensor renormalization group approach. With this method, one can probe large spin systems with little finite-size effect. For a range of temperature and coupling constant, a single magnetization plateau at one third of the saturation value is found. We investigate the dependence of the plateau width on temperature and on the strength of magnetic frustration. Furthermore, the spin configuration of the plateau state at zero temperature is determined.

Fidelity approach to Gaussian transitions

The fidelity approach to the Gaussian transitions in spin-one XXZ spin chains with three different values of Ising-like anisotropy lambda is analyzed by means of the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) technique for systems of large sizes. We find that, despite the success in the cases of lambda=2.59 and 1, the fidelity susceptibility fails to detect the Gaussian transition for lambda=0.5. Thus our results demonstrate the limitation of the fidelity susceptibility in characterizing quantum phase transitions, which was proposed recently in general frameworks.

Scaling Properties of Fidelity in Spin-one Anisotropic Model

By means of the density matrix renormalization group technique, the scaling relation of the fidelity susceptibility proposed recently is verified for the spin-one XXZ spin chain with an on-site anisotropic term. Moreover, from the results of both the fidelity susceptibility and the entanglement entropy, the critical points and some of the corresponding critical exponents are determined through a proper finite-size scaling analysis, and these values agree with the findings in the literature. Thus our work provides a numerical support of the use of the fidelity in detecting quantum phase transitions.

Ground-state fidelity in one-dimensional gapless model

A general relation between quantum phase transitions and the second derivative of the fidelity (or the "fidelity susceptibility") is proposed. The validity and the limitation of the fidelity susceptibility in characterizing quantum phase transitions is thus established. Moreover, based on the bosonization method, general formulas of the fidelity and the fidelity susceptibility are obtained for a class of one-dimensional gapless systems known as the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. Applying these formulas to the one-dimensional spin-1/2 $XXZ$ model, we find that quantum phase transitions, even of the Beresinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless type, can be signaled by the fidelity susceptibility.

Low-energy Effective Theory for One-dimensional Lattice Bosons near Integer Filling

A low-energy effective theory for interacting bosons on a one-dimensional lattice at and near integer fillings is proposed. It is found that two sets of bosonic phase fields are necessary in order to explain the complete phase diagram. Using the present effective theory, the nature of the quantum phase transitions among various phases can be identified. Moreover, the general condition for the appearance of the recently proposed Pfaffian-like state can be realized from our effective action.

Search for quantum dimer phases and transitions in a frustrated spin ladder

A two-leg spin-1/2 ladder with diagonal interactions is investigated numerically. We focus our attention on the possibility of columnar dimer phase, which was recently predicted based on a reformulated bosonization theory. By using density matrix renormalization group technique and exact diagonalization method, we calculate columnar dimer order parameter, spin correlation on a rung, string order parameters, and scaled excitation gaps. Carefully using various finite-size scaling techniques, our results show no support for the existence of columnar dimer phase in the spin ladder under consideration.

Streda-like formula in spin Hall effect

A generalized Streda formula is derived for the spin transport in spin-orbit coupled systems. As compared with the original Streda formula for charge transport, there is an extra contribution of the spin Hall conductance whenever the spin is not conserved. For recently studied systems with quantum spin Hall effect in which the z-component spin is conserved, this extra contribution vanishes and the quantized value of spin Hall conductivity can be reproduced in the present approach. However, as spin is not conserved in general, this extra contribution can not be neglected, and the quantization is not exact.

Persistent spin current in mesoscopic ferrimagnetic spin ring

Using a semiclassical approach, we study the persistent magnetization current of a mesoscopic ferrimagnetic ring in a nonuniform magnetic field. At zero temperature, there exists persistent spin current because of the quantum fluctuation of magnons, similar to the case of an antiferromagnetic spin ring. At low temperature, the current shows activation behavior because of the field-induced gap. At higher temperature, the magnitude of the spin current is proportional to temperature T, similar to the reported result of a ferromagnetic spin ring.

Entanglement and Quantum Phase Transition Revisited

We show that, for an exactly solvable quantum spin model, a discontinuity in the first derivative of the ground state concurrence appears in the absence of quantum phase transition. It is opposed to the popular belief that the non-analyticity property of entanglement (ground state concurrence) can be used to determine quantum phase transitions. We further point out that the analyticity property of the ground state concurrence in general can be more intricate than that of the ground state energy. Thus there is no one-to-one correspondence between quantum phase transitions and the non-analyticity property of the concurrence. Moreover, we show that the von Neumann entropy, as another measure of entanglement, can not reveal quantum phase transition in the present model. Therefore, in order to link with quantum phase transitions, some other measures of entanglement are needed.

Effect of inhomogeneous magnetic flux on double-dot Aharonov-Bohm Interferometer

The influence of the inhomogeneous distribution of the magnetic flux on quantum transport through coupled double quantum dots embedded in an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer are investigated. We show that the effective tunnelling coupling between two dots can be tuned by the magnetic flux imbalance threading two AB subrings. Thus the conductance and the local densities of states become periodic functions of the magnetic flux imbalance. Therefore, transport signals can be manipulated by adjusting the magnetic flux imbalance. Thus accurate control of the distribution of the magnetic flux is necessary for any practical application of such an Aharonov-Bohm interferometer.

Energy Spectrum of Bloch Electrons Under Checkerboard Field Modulations

Two-dimensional Bloch electrons in a uniform magnetic field exhibit complex energy spectrum. When static electric and magnetic modulations with a checkerboard pattern are superimposed on the uniform magnetic field, more structures and symmetries of the spectra are found, due to the additional adjustable parameters from the modulations. We give a comprehensive report on these new symmetries. We have also found an electric-modulation induced energy gap, whose magnitude is independent of the strength of either the uniform or the modulated magnetic field. This study is applicable to experimentally accessible systems and is related to the investigations on frustrated antiferromagnetism.

Chern-Simons Theory for Magnetization Plateaus of Frustrated $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model

The magnetization curve of the two-dimensional spin-1/2 $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model is investigated by using the Chern-Simons theory under a uniform mean-field approximation. We find that the magnetization curve is monotonically increasing for $J_2/J_1 < 0.267949$, where the system under zero external field is in the antiferromagnetic Néel phase. For larger ratios of $J_2/J_1$, various plateaus will appear in the magnetization curve. In particular, in the disordered phase, our result supports the existence of the $M/M_{\rm sat}=1/2$ plateau and predicts a new plateau at $M/M_{\rm sat}=1/3$. By identifying the onset ratio $J_2/J_1$ for the appearance of the 1/2-plateau with the boundary between the Néel and the spin-disordered phases in zero field, we can determine this phase boundary accurately by this mean-field calculation. Verification of these interesting results would indicate a strong connection between the frustrated antiferromagnetic system and the quantum Hall system.

Azbel-Hofstadter model on triangular lattice revisited

In the present paper, the mean of Lyapunov exponents for the Azbel-Hofstadter model on the triangular lattice is calculated. It is recently proposed that [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 85}, 4920 (2000)], for the case of the square lattice, this quantity can be related to the logarithm of the partition function of the two dimensional Ising model and has a connection to the asymptotic bandwidth. We find that the correspondence of this quantity to the logarithm of the partition function of the two dimensional Ising model is not complete for the triangular lattice. Moreover, the detailed connection between this quantity and the asymptotic bandwidth is not valid. Thus the conclusions for the mean of Lyapunov exponents suggested previously depend on the lattice geometry.
