The Double-lined Eclipsing $γ$ Doradus System AX Draconis in a 0.568-day Orbit

For the near-contact binary AX Dra, we present the first time-series spectroscopy collected with the echelle spectrograph BOES. From spectral analysis, we measured the projected rotation of $v_1 \sin i$ = $120\pm21$ km s$^{-1}$ and effective temperature of $T_{\rm eff,1}$ = $7220\pm150$ K for the brighter primary component, together with radial velocities (RVs) for both stars. To obtain a consistent binary model, the RV curves were analyzed by combining the 2-min cadence photometric data observed in the TESS sectors 15, 21, 22, and 41. The modeling indicates that AX Dra is a semi-detached system exhibiting a total secondary eclipse, with the detached primary component having a large filling factor of 92 \%. The system has masses of $1.717\pm0.026$ $M_\odot$ and $0.804\pm0.014$ $M_\odot$, radii of $1.541\pm0.020$ $R_\odot$ and $1.237\pm0.014$ $R_\odot$, luminosities of $5.78\pm0.50$ $L_\odot$ and $0.83\pm0.05$ $L_\odot$, and a temperature difference of $Δ$($T_{\rm eff,1}$--$T_{\rm eff,2}$) = $2263\pm163$ K. Multi-frequency analyses of the TESS residual lights yielded 35 significant signals in the frequency range below 5 day$^{-1}$. Among them, four frequencies of $f_1$, $f_2$, $f_3$, and $f_5$ are independent $γ$ Dor pulsations of the primary star, for which two acceptable mode-identification solutions were obtained using the frequency ratio method. These results suggest that AX Dra is the shortest-period double-lined eclipsing binary containing a $γ$ Dor-type pulsator and that the pulsating primary is likely an accretor affected by mass transfer.

The Pre-He White Dwarfs in Eclipsing Binaries. V. TIC 399725538

We present echelle spectra of TIC 399725538 obtained in Korea and Thailand to investigate the physical properties and evolutionary scenarios of EL CVn-type binaries. The time-series spectra yielded the radial velocities (RVs) of the primary component and its atmospheric parameters, $T_{\rm eff,A}=7194\pm70$ K and $v_{\rm A}\sin i=68\pm9$ km s$^{-1}$. Joint modeling of our RVs and the archival TESS data provided component masses of $M_{\rm A}=1.930\pm0.054$ $M_\odot$ and $M_{\rm B}=0.211\pm0.005$ $M_\odot$, radii of $R_{\rm A}=1.922\pm0.020$ $R_\odot$ and $R_{\rm B}=0.207\pm0.005$ $R_\odot$, and luminosities of $L_{\rm A}=8.87\pm0.39$ $L_\odot$ and $L_{\rm B}=0.546\pm0.034$ $L_\odot$. The surface gravity and distance derived from this modeling are consistent with the model-independent $\log g_{\rm B}$ obtained from the direct observables and with the Gaia distance. The third light of $l_3=0.136\pm0.003$ comes mainly from two neighboring stars, TIC 399725539 and TIC 399725544. Comparison with stellar models indicates that TIC 399725538 A lies within the instability region of $δ$ Sct$-$$γ$ Dor hybrids, whereas its extremely low-mass companion is markedly underluminous compared to theoretical white dwarf (WD) counterparts. Multifrequency analysis of the binary-subtracted residual lights revealed three significant signals, two of which correspond to aliases at two and four times the dominant frequency $f_1=0.0848$ day$^{-1}$. The $f_1$ frequency is likely a $γ$ Dor-type pulsation arising from the brighter A component, though further confirmation is required. Our results demonstrate that TIC 399725538 is a short-period EL CVn system belonging to the thick-disk population, consisting of a main-sequence $γ$ Dor pulsator and a helium-core WD precursor formed through stable mass transfer.

TIC 322208686: An Eclipsing System with $γ$ Doradus Pulsations and a Third Component on a Wider Orbit

TIC 322208686 is known to be a detached binary that exhibits two types of variability: pulsation and eclipse. We present the physical properties of the target star using the short-cadence TESS data from sectors 24, 57, and 58, and our echelle spectra that show the presence of a tertiary companion. The spectral analysis led to the triple-lined radial velocities and the atmospheric parameters of the eclipsing components. Joint modeling of these observations reveals that the eclipsing pair contains two F-type stars with masses $1.564\pm0.012$ $M_\odot$ and $1.483\pm0.012$ $M_\odot$, radii $1.588\pm0.011$ $R_\odot$ and $1.500\pm0.012$ $R_\odot$, effective temperatures $7028\pm100$ K and $7020\pm110$ K, and luminosities $5.51\pm0.32$ $L_\odot$ and $4.90\pm0.32$ $L_\odot$. The light contributions of the three stars obtained from this modeling match well with those calculated from the observed spectra. The binary star parameters are in satisfactory agreement with evolutionary model predictions for age $t$ = 0.4 Gyr and metallicity $Z$ = 0.03. We extracted 11 significant frequencies from the TESS light residuals with the binary effects removed. Of these, five signals between 0.65 day$^{-1}$ and 1.89 day$^{-1}$ can be considered as $γ$ Dor pulsations originating mainly from the primary component, while the other frequencies are likely instrumental artifacts or combination terms. These results suggest that TIC 322208686 is a hierarchical triple, containing a pulsating eclipsing pair and a tertiary companion.

The Low Mass Ratio Overcontact Binary GV Leonis and Its Circumbinary Companion

Photometric and spectroscopic observations of GV Leo were performed from 2017 to 2024. The light curves show a flat bottom at the primary eclipse and the conventional O'Connell effect. The echelle spectra reveal that the effective temperature and rotation velocity of the more massive secondary are $T_{\rm eff,2}$ = 5220$\pm$120 K and $v_2 \sin i$ = 223$\pm$40 km s$^{-1}$, respectively. Our binary modeling indicates that the program target is a W-subclass contact binary with a mass ratio of $q$ = 5.48, an inclination angle of $i$ = 81$^\circ$.68, a temperature difference of ($T_{\rm eff,1}-T_{\rm eff,2}$) = 154 K, and a filling factor of $f$ = 36 \%. The light asymmetries were reasonably modeled by a dark starspot on the secondary's photosphere. Including our 26 minimum epochs, 84 times of minimum light were used to investigate the orbital period of the system. We found that the eclipse times of GV Leo have varied by a sinusoid with a period of 14.9 years and a semi-amplitude of 0.0076 days superimposed on a downward parabola. The periodic modulation is interpreted as a light time effect produced by an unseen outer tertiary with a minimum mass of 0.26 M$_\odot$, while the parabolic component is thought to be a combination of mass transfer (secondary to primary) and angular momentum loss driven by magnetic braking. The circumbinary tertiary would have caused the eclipsing pair of GV Leo to evolve into its current short-period contact state by removing angular momentum from the primordial widish binary.

Pulsations and Pre-He White Dwarf in the Post-mass Transfer Eclipsing System WASP 1021-28

We present results from VLT/UVES spectra and TESS photometric observations of the pulsating EL CVn binary WASP 1021-28, containing a He-core white dwarf precursor (pre-He WD). Double-lined radial velocities were measured with the atmospheric parameters of $T_{\rm eff,A}$ = 7411$\pm40$ K, [M/H] = 0.34$\pm$0.05 dex, and $v_{\rm A}$$\sin i$ = 86.6$\pm$4.0 km s$^{-1}$ for the more massive primary. Combining these measurements and TESS data from four sectors allowed the direct calculation of accurate values for the absolute parameters of each component and the distance to the system. The third-light source of $l_3$ = 0.029 may be the outer tertiary object previously discovered by SPHERE/IRDIS observations. WASP 1021-28 A is located near the blue edge of the $γ$ Dor instability strip, and the less massive companion is concurrent with the He-core WD model for metallicity $Z$ = 0.02 and mass $M$ = 0.191 $M_\odot$. The $Z$ value and the Galactic kinematics demonstrate that the program target belongs to the thin-disk population. We iteratively prewhitened the entire TESS residuals and extracted four and nine significant signals in two ranges of 1.12$-$2.25 day$^{-1}$ and 111.25$-$139.24 day$^{-1}$, respectively. A signal of $f_2$ = 1.31865 day$^{-1}$ in the low-frequency region can be attributed to the $γ$ Dor pulsation of WASP 1021-28 A, and the high frequencies may be extremely low-mass pre-He WD oscillations. The results presented here provide valuable information on the evolution of short-period EL CVn stars proposed as inner binaries of hierarchical triple systems and the multiperiodic pulsations.

Detection of the lowest mass ratio contact binary in the universe: TYC 3801-1529-1

This paper presents the first analysis of the contact binary TYC 3801-1529-1. We observed four sets of multiple bands complete light curves and one set of radial velocity curve of the primary component. Based on a simultaneous investigation of our observed and TESS light curves and the radial velocity curve, we found that TYC 3801-1529-1 is an extremely low-mass-ratio, medium contact binary with $q=0.0356$, with the contribution of the third light at a level of about 10\%. Its mass ratio is lower than V1187 Her, making TYC 3801-1529-1 the lowest mass-ratio contact binary ever found in the universe. The light curves observed in 2022 are asymmetric, which is aptly explained by a hot spot on the primary component. A 16-year eclipse timings analysis indicates a secular increase orbital period with a rate of dp/dt$=7.96(\pm0.35)\times10^{-7}$ d yr$^{-1}$. We studied the stability of this target and identified that not only the value of $J_{spin}/J_{orb}$, but also the mass ratio surpass the unstable boundary. Hence, TYC 3801-1529-1 presents a challenge to theoretical research and ought to be considered a progenitor of a contact binary merger.

WASP 0346-21: An EL CVn-Type Eclipsing Binary with Multiperiodic Pulsations in a Triple System

VLT/UVES spectroscopic and TESS photometric observations for WASP 0346-21 allow the direct determination of its physical properties, along with the detection of a circumbinary object and oscillating signals. The high-resolution spectra yielded the radial velocities of all three stars and the atmospheric parameters of $T_{\rm eff,A}$ = 7225$\pm42$ K, [M/H] = 0.30$\pm$0.03 dex, and $v_{\rm A}$$\sin i$ = 78$\pm$5 km s$^{-1}$ of the primary component. The combined analysis of these observations resulted in the fundamental parameters of the eclipsing components and the third light of $l_3$ = 0.043$\pm$0.004, which is consistent with the light contribution of the tertiary star observed in the echelle spectra. WASP 0346-21 A resides within the overlapping main-sequence domain of $δ$ Sct and $γ$ Dor variables, while the secondary component of $M_{\rm B}$ = 0.185$\pm$0.013 M$_\odot$, $R_{\rm B}$ = 0.308$\pm$0.023 R$_\odot$, $T_{\rm eff,B}$ = 10,655$\pm$146 K, and $L_{\rm B}$ = 1.09$\pm$0.17 L$_\odot$ matches well with the low-mass white dwarf (WD) model for $Z$ = 0.01, corresponding to the thick-disk population classified by the Galactic kinematics. Multifrequency analyses were performed on the residual TESS data after removing the binarity effects. The low frequencies around 26.348 day$^{-1}$ and 17.683 day$^{-1}$ are $δ$ Sct pulsations originating from WASP 0346-21 A, and the high frequencies of 97.996 day$^{-1}$ and 90.460 day$^{-1}$ are considered to be extremely low-mass WD oscillations. These results demonstrate that WASP 0346-21 is a hierarchical triple system, consisting of an EL CVn binary with multiperiodic pulsations in each component and a distant outer tertiary.

A Photometric and Spectroscopic Study of the Short-Period Algol EW Boötis with a $δ$ Sct Pulsator

In this paper, we present TESS photometry and high-resolution spectra of the short-period Algol EW Boo. We obtained double-lined radial velocities (RVs) from the time-series spectra and measured the effective temperature of the primary star as $T_{\rm{eff,1}}$ = 8560 $\pm$ 118 K. For the orbital period study, we collected all times of minima available for over the last 30 years. It was found that the eclipse timing variation of the system could be represented by a periodic oscillation of 17.6 $\pm$ 0.3 years with a semi-amplitude of 0.0041 $\pm$ 0.0001 d. The orbital and physical parameters were derived by simultaneously analyzing the TESS light and RV curves using the Wilson-Devinney (WD) binary star modeling code. The component masses and radii were showed over 3% precision: $M_{1}$ = 2.67 $\pm $ 0.08 M$_{\odot}$, $M_{2}$ = 0.43 $\pm $ 0.01 M$_{\odot}$, $R_{1}$ = 2.01 $\pm $ 0.02 R$_{\odot}$, and $R_{2}$ = 1.35 $\pm $ 0.01 R$_{\odot}$. Furthermore, multiple frequency analyses were performed for the light-curve residuals from the WD model. As a result, we detected 17 pressure-mode pulsations in the region of 40.15 - 52.37 d$^{-1}$. The absolute dimensions and pulsation characteristics showed that the $δ$ Sct pulsator was the more massive and hotter primary star of the EW Boo.

Two contact binaries with mass ratios close to the minimum mass ratio

The cut-off mass ratio is under debate for contact binaries. In this paper, we present the investigation of two contact binaries with mass ratios close to the low mass ratio limit. It is found that the mass ratios of VSX J082700.8+462850 (hereafter J082700) and 1SWASP J132829.37+555246.1 (hereafter J132829) are both less than 0.1 ($q\sim0.055$ for J082700, and $q\sim0.089$ for J132829). J082700 is a shallow contact binary with a contact degree of $\sim$19%, and J132829 is a deep contact system with a fillout factor of $\sim$70%. The $O-C$ diagram analysis indicated that both the two systems manifest long-term period decrease. In addition, J082700 exhibits a cyclic modulation which is more likely resulted from Applegate mechanism. In order to explore the properties of extremely low mass ratio contact binaries (ELMRCBs), we carried out a statistical analysis on contact binaries with mass ratios of $q\lesssim0.1$ and discovered that the values of $J_{spin}/J_{orb}$ of three systems are greater than 1/3. Two possible explanations can interpret this phenomenon. One is that some physical processes, unknown to date, are not considered when Hut presented the dynamically instability criterion. The other is that the dimensionless gyration radius ($k$) should be smaller than the value we used ($k^2=0.06$). We also found that the formation of ELMRCBs possibly has two channels. The study of evolutionary states of ELMRCBs reveals that their evolutionary states are similar with those of normal W UMa contact binaries.
