Clustering function: a measure of social influence

A commonly used characteristic of statistical dependence of adjacency relations in real networks, the clustering coefficient, evaluates chances that two neighbours of a given vertex are adjacent. An extension is obtained by considering conditional probabilities that two randomly chosen vertices are adjacent given that they have r common neighbours. We denote such probabilities cl(r) and call r-> cl(r) the clustering function. We compare clustering functions of several networks having non-negligible clustering coefficient. They show similar patterns and surprising regularity. We establish a first order asymptotic (as the number of vertices tends to infinity) of the clustering function of related random intersection graph models admitting nonvanishing clustering coefficient and asymptotic degree distribution having a finite second moment.

Degree and clustering coefficient in sparse random intersection graphs

We establish asymptotic vertex degree distribution and examine its relation to the clustering coefficient in two popular random intersection graph models of Godehardt and Jaworski [Electron. Notes Discrete Math. 10 (2001) 129-132]. For sparse graphs with a positive clustering coefficient, we examine statistical dependence between the (local) clustering coefficient and the degree. Our results are mathematically rigorous. They are consistent with the empirical observation of Foudalis et al. [In Algorithms and Models for Web Graph (2011) Springer] that, "clustering correlates negatively with degree." Moreover, they explain empirical results on $k^{-1}$ scaling of the local clustering coefficient of a vertex of degree k reported in Ravasz and Barabasi [Phys. Rev. E 67 (2003) 026112].

Random intersection graph process

We introduce a random intersection graph process aimed at modeling sparse evolving affiliation networks that admit tunable (power law) degree distribution and assortativity and clustering coefficients. We show the asymptotic degree distribution and provide explicit asymptotic formulas for assortativity and clustering coefficients.

Assortativity and clustering of sparse random intersection graphs

We consider sparse random intersection graphs with the property that the clustering coefficient does not vanish as the number of nodes tends to infinity. We find explicit asymptotic expressions for the correlation coefficient of degrees of adjacent nodes (called the assortativity coefficient), the expected number of common neighbours of adjacent nodes, and the expected degree of a neighbour of a node of a given degree k. These expressions are written in terms of the asymptotic degree distribution and, alternatively, in terms of the parameters defining the underlying random graph model.

The largest component in an inhomogeneous random intersection graph with clustering

Given b>0, integers n, m=bn and a probability measure Q on {0, 1,..., m}, consider the random intersection graph on the vertex set [n]={1, ..., n}, where i and j are declared adjacent whenever S(i) and S(j) intersect. Here S(1), ..., S(n) denote iid random subsets of [m] such that P(|S(i)|=k)=Q(k). For sparse random intersection graphs we establish a first order asymptotic for the order of the largest connected component N=n(1-Q(0))g+o(n) in probability. Here g is an average of nonextinction probabilities of a related multi-type Poisson branching process.
