Emergent Haldane phase in an alternating bond $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermion chain

The Haldane phase represents one of the most important symmetry protected states in modern physics. This state can be realized using spin-1 and spin-${1\over 2}$ Heisenberg models and bosonic particles. Here we explore the emergent Haldane phase in an alternating bond $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermion chain, which is different from the previous proposals from fundamental statistics and symmetries. We show that this emergent phase can also be characterized by a modified long-range string order, as well as four-fold degeneracy in the ground state energies and entanglement spectra. This phase is protected by both the charge conjugate and parity symmetry, and the edge modes are shown to satisfy parafermionic statistics, in which braiding of the two edge modes yields a ${2π\over 3}$ phase. This model also supports rich phases, including topological ferromagnetic parafermion (FP) phase, trivial paramagnetic parafermion phase, classical dimer phase and gapless phase. The boundaries of the FP phase are shown to be gapless and critical with central charge $c = 4/5$. Even in the topological FP phase, it is also characterized by the long-range string order, thus we observe a drop of string order across the phase boundary between the FP phase and Haldane phase. These phenomena are quite general and this work opens a new way for finding exotic topological phases in $\mathbb{Z}_k$ parafermion models.

Topological phase, supercritical point and emergent phenomena in extended $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermion chain

Topological orders and associated topological protected excitations satisfying non-Abelian statistics have been widely explored in various platforms. The $\mathbb{Z}_3$ parafermions are regarded as the most natural generation of the Majorana fermions to realize these topological orders. Here we investigate the topological phase and emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin phases in an extended parafermion chain. This model exhibits rich variety of phases, including not only topological ferromagnetic phase, which supports non-Abelian anyon excitation, but also spin-fluid, dimer and chiral phases from the emergent $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin model. We generalize the measurement tools in $\mathbb{Z}_2$ spin models to fully characterize these phases in the extended parafermion model and map out the corresponding phase diagram. Surprisingly, we find that all the phase boundaries finally merge to a single supercritical point. In regarding of the rather generality of emergent phenomena in parafermion models, this approach opens a wide range of intriguing applications in investigating the exotic phases in other parafermion models.

Topological indexes in symmetry preserving dynamics

The quench dynamics of topological phases have received intensive investigations in recent years. In this work, we prove exactly that the topological invariants for both $\mathbb{Z}$ and $\mathbb{Z}_2$ indexes are independent of time in symmetry preserving dynamics. We first reach this conclusion by a direct relation between the time derivative of Berry connection and the Hamiltonian energy based on the time dependent Hellman-Feynman theorem, with which we show exactly that the topological indexes for systems without and with time reversal symmetry are unchanged during evolution. In contrast, the geometry phase without symmetry protection in a closed parameter space can change dramtically with time, as revealed from the parameterized Landau-Zener model. Then we interpret this result by showing that the time dependent wave function is essentially the eigenvector of an auxiliary Hamiltonian, which has exactly the same spectra and symmetries as the original Hamiltonian. For this reason, the adiabatic evolution between the original and auxiliary Hamiltonian will not lead to gap closing and reopening, thus the topological indexes are independent of time. This result has generality and can be applied to models with other symmetries and dimensions, and may even be applied to gapless phases. Finally, possible ways to outreach this rigorous result are discussed.

Gapped topological Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superfluids with artificial gauge potential and weak interaction

The topological superfluids with Majorana zero modes have not yet been realized in ultracold atoms with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Here we show that these phases can be realized with an artificial gauge potential, which can be regarded as a site-dependent rotating Zeeman field. This potential breaks the inversion symmetry and plays the same role as Rashba spin-orbit coupling. In the inverted bands, this model can open a proper parameter regime for topological superfluids. Strikingly, we find that the interaction near the Fermi surface is dominated by the dispersion scattering in the same band, thus can realize topological phase with much weaker attractive interaction, as compared with the model with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. We find a large regime for the gapped topological Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov superfluids and unveil the phase diagram with mean-field theory, which should be credible in the weak interaction regime. In regarding the negligible heating effect in realizing this potential in alkaline and rare-earth atoms, our model has the potential to be the first system to realize the long-sought topological FFLO phase and the associated Majorana zero modes.

Fundamental intrinsic lifetimes in semiconductor self-assembled quantum dots

The self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) provide an ideal platform for realization of quantum information technology because it provides on demand single photons, entangled photon pairs from biexciton cascade pro- cess, single spin qubits, and so on. The fine structure splitting (FSS) of exciton is a fundamental property of QDs for thees applications. From the symmetry point of view, since the two bright exciton states belong to two different representations for QDs with C2v symmetry, they should not only have different energies, but also have different lifetimes, which is termed exciton lifetime asymmetry. In contrast to extensively studied FSS, the investigation of the exciton lifetime asymmetry is still missed in literature. In this work, we carried out the first investigation of the exciton lifetime asymmetry in self-assembled QDs and presented a theory to deduce lifetime asymmetry indirectly from measurable qualities of QDs. We further revealed that intrinsic lifetimes and their asymmetry are fundamental quantities of QDs, which determine the bound of the extrinsic lifetime asymmetries, polarization angles, FSSs, and their evolution under uniaxial external forces. Our findings provide an important basis to deeply understanding properties of QDs.

Spin-Orbit Driven Transitions Between Mott Insulators and Finite Momentum Superfluids of Bosons in Optical Lattices

Synthetic spin-orbit coupling in ultracold atomic gases can be taken to extremes rarely found in solids. We study a two dimensional Hubbard model of bosons in an optical lattice in the presence of spin-orbit coupling strong enough to drive direct transitions from Mott insulators to superfluids. Here we find phase-modulated superfluids with finite momentum that are generated entirely by spin-orbit coupling. We investigate the rich phase patterns of the superfluids, which may be directly probed using time-of-flight imaging of the spin-dependent momentum distribution.

RI/MOM and RI/SMOM renormalization of overlap quark bilinears on domain wall fermion configurations

Renormalization constants (RCs) of overlap quark bilinear operators on 2+1-flavor domain wall fermion configurations are calculated by using the RI/MOM and RI/SMOM schemes. The scale independent RC for the axial vector current is computed by using a Ward identity. Then the RCs for the quark field and the vector, tensor, scalar and pseudoscalar operators are calculated in both the RI/MOM and RI/SMOM schemes. The RCs are converted to the $\overline{\rm MS}$ scheme and we compare the numerical results from using the two intermediate schemes. The lattice size is $48^3\times96$ and the inverse spacing $1/a = 1.730(4) {\rm~GeV}$.

Heteronuclear magnetisms with ultracold spinor bosonic gases in optical lattices

Motivated by recent realizations of spin-1 NaRb mixtures in the experiments, here we investigate heteronuclear magnetism in the Mott-insulating regime. Different from the identical mixtures where the boson (fermion) statistics only admits even (odd) parity states from angular momentum composition, for heteronuclear atoms in principle all angular momentum states are allowed, which can give rise to new magnetic phases. Various magnetic phases can be developed over these degenerate spaces, however, the concrete symmetry breaking phases depend not only on the degree of degeneracy, but also the competitions from many-body interactions. We unveil these rich phases using the bosonic dynamical mean-field theory approach. These phases are characterized by various orders, including spontaneous magnetization order, spin magnitude order, singlet pairing order and nematic order, which may coexist, especially in the regime with odd parity. Finally we address the possible parameter regimes for observing these spin-ordered Mott phases.

Glueball relevant study on isoscalars from $N_f=2$ lattice QCD

We perform a glueball-relevant study on isoscalars based on anisotropic $N_f=2$ lattice QCD gauge configurations. In the scalar channel, we identify the ground state obtained through gluonic operators to be a single-particle state through its dispersion relation. When $q\bar{q}$ operator is included, we find the mass of this state does not change, and the $q\bar{q}$ operator couples very weakly to this state. So this state is most likely a glueball state. For pseudoscalars, along with the exiting lattice results, our study implies that both the conventional $q\bar{q}$ state $η_2$ (or $η'$ in flavor $SU(3)$) and a heavier glueball-like state with a mass of roughly 2.6 GeV exist in the spectrum of lattice QCD with dynamical quarks.

The Geometry of Large Tundra Lakes Observed in Historical Maps and Satellite Images

Tundra lakes are key components of the Arctic climate system because they represent a source of methane to the atmosphere. In this paper, we aim to analyze the geometry of the patterns formed by large ($>0.8$ km$^2$) tundra lakes in the Russian High Arctic. We have studied images of tundra lakes in historical maps from the State Hydrological Institute, Russia (date 1977; scale $0.21166$ km/pixel) and in Landsat satellite images derived from the Google Earth Engine (G.E.E.; date 2016; scale $0.1503$ km/pixel). The G.E.E. is a cloud-based platform for planetary-scale geospatial analysis on over four decades of Landsat data. We developed an image-processing algorithm to segment these maps and images, measure the area and perimeter of each lake, and compute the fractal dimension of the lakes in the images we have studied. Our results indicate that as lake size increases, their fractal dimension bifurcates. For lakes observed in historical maps, this bifurcation occurs among lakes larger than $100$ km$^2$ (fractal dimension $1.43$ to $1.87$). For lakes observed in satellite images this bifurcation occurs among lakes larger than $\sim$100 km$^2$ (fractal dimension $1.31$ to $1.95$). Tundra lakes with a fractal dimension close to $2$ have a tendency to be self-similar with respect to their area--perimeter relationships. Area--perimeter measurements indicate that lakes with a length scale greater than $70$ km$^2$ are power-law distributed. Preliminary analysis of changes in lake size over time in paired lakes (lakes that were visually matched in both the historical map and the satellite imagery) indicate that some lakes in our study region have increased in size over time, whereas others have decreased in size over time. Lake size change during this 39-year time interval can be up to half the size of the lake as recorded in the historical map.

Proposal for quantum many-body simulation and torsional matter-wave interferometry with a levitated nanodiamond

Hybrid spin-mechanical systems have great potentials in sensing, macroscopic quantum mechanics, and quantum information science. In order to induce strong coupling between an electron spin and the center-of-mass motion of a mechanical oscillator, a large magnetic gradient is usually required, which is difficult to achieve. Here we show that strong coupling between the electron spin of a nitrogen-vacancy (NV) center and the torsional vibration of an optically levitated nanodiamond can be achieved in a uniform magnetic field. Thanks to the uniform magnetic field, multiple spins can strongly couple to the torsional vibration at the same time. We propose to utilize this new coupling mechanism to realize the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model by an ensemble of NV centers in a levitated nanodiamond. The quantum phase transition in the LMG model and finite number effects can be observed with this system. We also propose to generate torsional superposition states and realize torsional matter-wave interferometry with spin-torsional coupling.

Naturally Combined Shape-Color Moment Invariants under Affine Transformations

We proposed a kind of naturally combined shape-color affine moment invariants (SCAMI), which consider both shape and color affine transformations simultaneously in one single system. In the real scene, color and shape deformations always exist in images simultaneously. Simple shape invariants or color invariants can not be qualified for this situation. The conventional method is just to make a simple linear combination of the two factors. Meanwhile, the manual selection of weights is a complex issue. Our construction method is based on the multiple integration framework. The integral kernel is assigned as the continued product of the shape and color invariant cores. It is the first time to directly derive an invariant to dual affine transformations of shape and color. The manual selection of weights is no longer necessary, and both the shape and color transformations are extended to affine transformation group. With the various of invariant cores, a set of lower-order invariants are constructed and the completeness and independence are discussed detailedly. A set of SCAMIs, which called SCAMI24, are recommended, and the effectiveness and robustness have been evaluated on both synthetic and real datasets.

Symmetry-enriched Bose-Einstein condensates in spin-orbit coupled bilayer system

We consider the fate of Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) with time-reversal symmetry and inversion symmetry in a spin-orbit coupled bilayer system. When these two symmetry operators commute, all the single particle bands are exactly two-fold degenerate in the momentum space. The scattering in the two-fold degenerate rings can relax the spin-momentum locking effect resulting from spin-orbit coupling, thus we can realize the spin polarized plane wave phase even when the inter-particle interaction dominates. When these two operators anti-commute, the lowest two bands may have the same minimal energy, which have totally different spin structures. As a result, the competition between different condensates in these two energetically degenerate rings can give rise to interesting stripe phases with atoms condensed at two or four colinear momenta. We find that the crossover between these two cases is accompanied by the excited band condensation when the interference energy can overcome the increased single particle energy in the excited band. This effect is not based on strong interaction, thus can be realized even with moderate interaction strength.

Type-I and type-II topological nodal superconductors with $s$-wave interaction

Topological nodal superconductors are generally realized based on unconventional pairings. In this work, we propose a minimal model to realize these topological nodal phases with only $s$-wave interaction. In our model the linear and quadratic spin-orbit couplings along the two directions break the isotropy in momentum space and introduce effective unconventional pairings on the Fermi surface. This model may support different nodal superconducting phases characterized by either winding number in BDI class or Pfaffian in D class at the particle-hole invariant axes. In the vicinity of the nodal points the effective Hamiltonian can be described by either type-I or type-II Dirac equation; and the crossover between these two nodal points can be driven by external Zeeman fields. We show that these nodal phases are robust against weak disorders, thus are possible to be realized in experiments with real materials. The smoking-gun evidences to verify these phases based on scanning tunneling spectroscopy are also briefly discussed.

Emergent phases in a compass chain with multisite interactions

We study a dimerised spin chain with biaxial magnetic interacting ions in the presence of an externally induced three-site interactions out of equilibrium. In the general case, the three-site interactions play a role in renormalizing the effective uniform magnetic field. We find that the existence of zero-energy Majorana modes is intricately related to the sign of Pfaffian of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes Hamiltonian and the relevant $Z_2$ topological invariant. In contrast, we show that an exotic spin liquid phase can emerge in the compass limit through a Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) quantum phase transition. Such a BKT transition is characterized by a large dynamic exponent $z=4$, and the spin-liquid phase is robust under a uniform magnetic field. We find the relative entropy and the quantum discord can signal the BKT transitions. We also uncover a few differences in deriving the correlation functions for the systems with broken reflection symmetry.

Strange and Charm Quark Spins from Anomalous Ward Identity

We present a calculation of the strange and charm quark contributions to the nucleon spin from the anomalous Ward identity (AWI). It is performed with overlap valence quarks on 2+1-flavor domain-wall fermion gauge configurations on a $24^3 \times 64$ lattice with the light sea mass at $m_π = 330$ MeV. To satisfy the AWI, the overlap fermion for the pseudoscalar density and the overlap Dirac operator for the topological density, which do not have multiplicative renormalization, are used to normalize the form factor of the local axial-vector current at finite $q^2$. For the charm quark, we find that the negative pseudoscalar term almost cancels the positive topological term. For the strange quark, the pseudoscalar term is less negative than that of the charm. By imposing the AWI, the strange $g_A(q^2)$ at $q^2 =0$ is obtained by a global fit of the pseudoscalar and the topological form factors, together with $g_A(q^2)$ and the induced pseudoscalar form factor $h_A(q^2)$ at finite $q^2$. The chiral extrapolation to the physical pion mass gives $Δs + Δ{\bar{s}} = -0.0403(44)(78)$.

Tunneling Spectroscopy of Atomically-Thin Al2O3 Films for Tunnel Junctions

Metal-Insulator-Metal tunnel junctions (MIMTJ) are common throughout the microelectronics industry. The industry standard AlOx tunnel barrier, formed through oxygen diffusion into an Al wetting layer, is plagued by internal defects and pinholes which prevent the realization of atomically-thin barriers demanded for enhanced quantum coherence. In this work, we employed in situ scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) along with molecular dynamics simulations to understand and control the growth of atomically thin Al2O3 tunnel barriers using atomic layer deposition (ALD). We found that a carefully tuned initial H2O pulse hydroxylated the Al surface and enabled the creation of an atomically-thin Al2O3 tunnel barrier with a high quality M-I interface and a significantly enhanced barrier height compared to thermal AlOx. These properties, corroborated by fabricated Josephson Junctions, show that ALD Al2O3 is a dense, leak-free tunnel barrier with a low defect density which can be a key component for the next-generation of MIMTJs.

Exotic Spin Phases in Two Dimensional Spin-orbit Coupled Models: Importance of Quantum Fluctuation Effects

We investigate the phase diagrams of the effective spin models derived from Fermi-Hubbard and Bose-Hubbard models with Rashba spin-orbit coupling, using string bond states, one of the quantum tensor network states methods. We focus on the role of quantum fluctuation effect in stabilizing the exotic spin phases in these models. For boson systems, and when the ratio between inter-particle and intra-particle interaction $λ> 1$, the out-of-plane ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases obtained from quantum simulations are the same to those obtained from classic model. However, the quantum order-by-disorder effect reduces the classical in-plane XY-FM and XY-vortex phases to the quantum X/Y-FM and X/Y-stripe phase when $λ< 1$. The spiral phase and skyrmion phase can be realized in the presence of quantum fluctuation. For the Fermi-Hubbard model, the quantum fluctuation energies are always important in the whole parameter regime. %, which are much larger than those of the Bose model. A general picture to understand the phase diagrams from symmetry point of view is also presented.
