Phase transition in finite density and temperature lattice QCD

We investigate the behavior of the chiral condensate in lattice QCD at finite temperature and finite chemical potential. The study was done using two flavors of light quarks and with a series of $β$ and $ma$ at the lattice size $24\times12^{2}\times6$. The calculation was done in the Taylar expansion formalism. We are able to calculate the first and second order derivatives of $\langle\barψψ\rangle$ in both isoscalar and isovector channels. With the first derivatives being small, we find that the second derivatives are sizable close to the phase transition and the magnitude of $\barψψ$ decreases under the influence of finite chemical potential in both channels.

Strange quark momentum fraction from overlap fermion

We present a calculation of $< x >_s$ for the strange quark in the nucleon. We also report the ratio of the strange $< x >$ to that of $u/d$ in the disconnected insertion which will be useful in constraining the global fit of parton distribution functions at small $x$. We adopt overlap fermion action on $2 + 1$ flavor domain-wall fermion configurations on the $24^3 \times 64$ lattice with a light sea quark mass which corresponds to $m_π=330$ MeV. Smeared grid $Z_3$ sources are deployed to calculate the nucleon propagator with low-mode substitution. Even-odd grid sources and time-dilution technique with stochastic noises are used to calculate the high mode contribution to the quark loop. Low mode averaging (LMA) for the quark loop is applied to reduce the statistical error of the disconnected insertion calculation. We find the ratio $< x >_s/< x >_{u/d}^{\mathrm{DI}}= 0.78(3)$ in this study.

Low-energy Scattering of $(D^{*}\bar{D}^{*})^\pm$ System and the Resonance-like Structure $Z_c(4025)$

In this paper, low-energy scattering of the $(D^{*}\bar{D}^{*})^\pm$ meson system is studied within Lüscher's finite-size formalism using $N_{f}=2$ twisted mass gauge field configurations. With three different pion mass values, the $s$-wave threshold scattering parameters, namely the scattering length $a_0$ and the effective range $r_0$, are extracted in $J^P=1^+$ channel. Our results indicate that, in this particular channel, the interaction between the two vector charmed mesons is weakly repulsive in nature hence do not support the possibility of a shallow bound state for the two mesons, at least for the pion mass values being studied. This study provides some useful information on the nature of the newly discovered resonance-like structure $Z_c(4025)$ observed in various experiments.

Observation of coherent oscillation in single-passage Landau-Zener transitions

Landau-Zener transition (LZT) has been explored in a variety of physical systems for coherent population transfer between different quantum states. In recent years, there have been various proposals for applying LZT to quantum information processing because when compared to the methods using ac pulse for coherent population transfer, protocols based on LZT are less sensitive to timing errors. However, the effect of finite range of qubit energy available to LZT based state control operations has not been thoroughly examined. In this work, we show that using the well-known Landau-Zener formula in the vicinity of an avoided energy-level crossing will cause considerable errors due to coherent oscillation of the transition probability in a single-passage LZT experiment. The data agree well with the numerical simulations which take the transient dynamics of LZT into account. These results not only provide a closer view on the issue of finite-time LZT but also shed light on its effects on the quantum state manipulation.

Dynamical topological phases in quenched spin-orbit coupled degenerate Fermi gas

The spin-orbit coupled degenerate Fermi gas provides a totally new platform to realize topological superfluids and related topological excitations. Previous studies have mainly focused on the properties of the ground state. Here we consider a two-dimensional Fermi gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling subject to a perpendicular Zeeman field. For this system, we have found that its ground state topological structure is captured by the spin texture, which is readily measurable in experiments. We show that, when the Zeeman field is suddenly quenched, dynamical topological phases can be realized. More specifically, three post-quench dynamical phases can be identified according to the asymptotic behavior of the order parameter. In the undamped phase, a persistent oscillation of the order parameter may support a topological Floquet state with multiple edge states. In the Landau damped phase, the magnitude of the order parameter approaches a constant via a power-law decay, and this system can support a dynamical topological phase with a pair of edge states at the boundary. In the over-damped phase, the order parameter decays to zero exponentially although the condensate fraction remains finite. These predictions can be observed in the strong coupling regime of ultracold Fermi gas.

Towards scalable entangled photon sources with self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots

Biexciton cascade process in self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) provides an ideal system for deterministic entangled photon pair source, which is essential in quantum information science. The entangled photon pairs have recently be realized in experiments after eliminating the FSS of exciton using a number of different methods. However, so far the QDs entangled photon sources are not scalable, because the wavelengths of the QDs are different from dot to dot. Here we propose a wavelength tunable entangled photon emitter on a three dimensional stressor, in which the FSS and exciton energy can be tuned independently, allowing photon entanglement between dissimilar QDs. We confirm these results by using atomistic pseudopotential calculations. This provides a first step towards future realization of scalable entangled photon generators for quantum information applications.

A mini review on NiFe-based materials as highly active oxygen evolution reaction electrocatalysts

Oxygen evolution reaction (OER) electrolysis, as an important reaction involved in water splitting and rechargeable metal-air battery, has attracted increasing attention for clean energy generation and efficient energy storage. Nickel/iron (NiFe)-based compounds have been known as active OER catalysts since the last century, and renewed interest has been witnessed in recent years on developing advanced NiFe-based materials for better activity and stability. In this review, we present the early discovery and recent progress on NiFe-based OER electrocatalysts in terms of chemical properties, synthetic methodologies and catalytic performances. The advantages and disadvantages of each class of NiFe-based compounds are summarized, including NiFe alloys, electro-deposited films and layered-double hydroxide nanoplates. Some mechanistic studies of the active phase of NiFe-based compounds are introduced and discussed to give insight into the nature of active catalytic site, which could facilitate further improving NiFe based OER electrocatalysts. Finally, some applications of NiFe-based compounds for OER are described, including the development of electrolyzer operating with a single AAA battery with voltage below 1.5V and high performance rechargeable Zn-air batteries.

Meson Mass Decomposition

Hadron masses can be decomposed as a sum of components which are defined through hadronic matrix elements of QCD operators. The components consist of the quark mass term, the quark energy term, the glue energy term and the trace anomaly term. We calculate these components of mesons with lattice QCD for the first time. The calculation is carried out with overlap fermion on $2+1$ flavor domain-wall fermion gauge configurations. We confirm that $\sim 50\%$ of the light pion mass comes from the quark mass and $\sim 10\%$ comes from the quark energy, whereas, the contributions are found to be the other way around for the $ρ$ mass. The combined glue components contribute $\sim 40 - 50\%$ for both mesons. It is interesting to observe that the quark mass contribution to the mass of the vector meson is almost linear in quark mass over a large quark mass region below the charm quark mass. For heavy mesons, the quark mass term dominates the masses, while the contribution from the glue components is about $400\sim500$ MeV for the heavy pseudoscalar and vector mesons. The charmonium hyperfine splitting is found to be dominated by the quark energy term which is consistent with the quark potential model.

Large Chern Number Topological Superfluids in Coupled Layer System

We investigate the topological phase transition with large Chern number in a coupled layer system. The topological transitions between different topological superfluids can be realized by controlling the binding energy, interlay tunneling and layer asymmetry {\it etc}. These topological phase transitions can be characterized by energy gap closing and reopening at the critical points at zero momentum, where the Pfaffian and Chern number undergo a discontinuous change. The bulk-edge correspondence ensures that the number of edge modes exactly equals the Chern number. However all these edge modes localized at the same edge have the same chirality and propagate along the same direction. These topological phases can be detected by spin texture at or near zero momentum, which changes discontinuously across the phase transition point due to band inversion. This model can be easily generalized to multilayer system in which the Chern number equals any positive integer --- similar to that in integer quantum Hall effect --- can be realized. This work paves a new way in the realization of topological superfluids with large Chern number.

Non-perturbative renormalization of overlap quark bilinears on 2+1-flavor domain wall fermion configurations

We present renormalization constants of overlap quark bilinear operators on 2+1-flavor domain wall fermion configurations. This setup is being used by the chiQCD collaboration in calculations of physical quantities such as strangeness in the nucleon and the strange and charm quark masses. The scale independent renormalization constant for the axial vector current is computed using the Ward Identity. The renormalization constants for scalar, pseudoscalar and vector current are calculated in the RI-MOM scheme. Results in the MS-bar scheme are also given. The step scaling function of quark masses in the RI-MOM scheme is computed as well. The analysis uses, in total, six different ensembles of three sea quarks each on two lattices with sizes 24^3x64 and 32^3x64 at spacings a=(1.73 GeV)^{-1} and (2.28 GeV)^{-1}, respectively.

Detecting Fulde-Ferrell superconductors by an Andreev interferometer

We propose an Andreev interferometer, based on a branched Y-junction, to detect the finite momentum pairing in Fulde-Ferrell (FF) superconductors. In this interferometer, the oscillation of subgap conductance is a unique function of phase difference between the two channels of the Y-junction, which is determined by the phase modulation of the order parameter in the FF superconductors. This interferometer has the potential not only to determine the magnitude but also the direction of the momentum of Cooper pairs in the FF superconductor. The possible applications of the interferometer in the identification of the finite momentum pairing in non-centrosymmetric superconductors are also discussed.

Oscillatory behavior of the domain wall fermions revisited

In the generic domain wall fermion formulation of chiral fermions on the lattice, the zero modes of the four-dimensional Wilson fermion operator with the negative mass parameter $-M_5$ introduce unphysical massive modes propagating in the four-dimensional spacetime. In the free fermion case, the pole mass of this kind of unphysical modes is given by $\tilde{E}=\ln(1-M_5)$, which acquires an imaginary part, $iπ$, when $M_5>1$ and results in an oscillatory behavior of the domain wall fermion propagator in time. The existence of the unphysical modes in the presence of gauge fields is investigated in the mean field approximation, and their physical consequences are discussed. In addition, we also give a semiquantitative criterion for tuning $M_5$ in the realistic numerical study.

Dicke-type phase transition in a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate

Spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) provide a powerful tool to investigate interesting gauge-field related phenomena. We study the ground state properties of such a system and show that it can be mapped to the well-known Dicke model in quantum optics, which describes the interactions between an ensemble of atoms and an optical field. A central prediction of the Dicke model is a quantum phase transition between a superradiant phase and a normal phase. Here we detect this transition in a spin-orbit coupled BEC by measuring various physical quantities across the phase transition. These quantities include the spin polarization, the relative occupation of the nearly degenerate single particle states, the quantity analogous to the photon field occupation, and the period of a collective oscillation (quadrupole mode). The applicability of the Dicke model to spin-orbit coupled BECs may lead to interesting applications in quantum optics and quantum information science.

Low-energy Scattering of $(D\bar{D}^{*})^\pm$ System And the Resonance-like Structure $Z_c(3900)$

In this exploratory lattice study, low-energy scattering of the $(D\bar{D}^{*})^\pm$ meson system is analyzed using lattice QCD with $N_f=2$ twisted mass fermion configurations with three pion mass values. The calculation is performed within single-channel Lüscher's finite-size formalism. The threshold scattering parameters, namely the scattering length $a_0$ and the effective range $r_0$, for the $s$-wave scattering in $J^P=1^+$ channel are extracted. For the cases in our study, the interaction between the two charmed mesons is weakly repulsive. Our lattice results therefore do not support the possibility of a shallow bound state for the two mesons for the pion mass values we studied. This calculation provides some useful information on the nature of the newly discovered resonance-like structure $Z_c(3900)$ by various experimental groups.

The Roper Puzzle

We carried out a calculation of the Roper state with the Sequential Empirical Bayesian (SEB) method with overlap valence fermion on 2+1-flavor domain-wall fermion configurations on the 24^3 x 64 lattice with a^{-1} = 1.73 GeV. The light sea quark mass corresponds to a pion mass of 330 MeV. The mass of the Roper, chirally extrapolated to the physical pion mass, is 1404(112) MeV which is consistent with the experimental value at 1440 MeV. When compared to the Roper state calculation with variational method for Clover and twisted mass fermions, it is found that the Roper states from SEB with overlap fermion are systematically lower by 400 - 800 MeV for all the quark masses ranging from light to the strange mass region. We study the origin of the difference by exploring the size of the interpolation field in relation to the radial wavefunction of the Roper and also the dynamical influence of the higher Fock space.

Competing superfluid orders in spin-orbit coupled fermionic cold atom optical lattices

The Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, a superconducting state with non-zero total momentum Cooper pairs in a large magnetic field, was first predicted about 50 years ago, and since then became an important concept in many branches of physics. Despite intensive search in various materials, unambiguous experimental evidence for the FFLO phase is still lacking in experiments. In this paper, we show that both FF (uniform order parameter with plane-wave phase) and LO phase (spatially varying order parameter amplitude) can be observed using fermionic cold atoms in spin-orbit coupled optical lattices. The increasing spin-orbit coupling enhances the FF phase over the LO phase. The coexistence of superfluid and magnetic orders is also found in the normal BCS phase. The pairing mechanism for different phases is understood by visualizing superfluid pairing densities in different spin-orbit bands. The possibility of observing similar physics using spin-orbit coupled superconducting ultra-thin films is also discussed.

Majorana Fermions in Semiconducting Nanowires on the Top of Fulde-Ferrell Superconductor

The novel idea that spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and $s$-wave pairing can lead to induced $p$-wave pairing at strong magnetic limit has stimulated widespread interests in the whole community for the searching of Majorana Fermions (MFs), a self-hermitian particle, in semiconductor-superconductor hybrid structures. However, this system has several inherent limitations that prohibit the realization and identification of MFs with the major advances of semiconductor nanotechnology. We show that these limitations can be resolved by replacing the $s$-wave superconductor with type-II Fulde-Ferrell (FF) superconductor, in which the Cooper pair center-of-mass momentum plays the role of renormalizing the in-plane Zeeman field and chemical potential. As a result, the MFs can be realized for semiconductor nanowires with small Landé $g$ factor and high carrier density. The SOC strength directly influences the topological boundary, thus the topological phase transition and associated MFs can be engineered by an external electric field. Almost all the semiconductor nanowires can be used to realize MFs in this new platform. In particular, we find that InP nanowire, in some aspects, is more suitable for the realization of MFs than InAs and InSb nanowires. This new platform therefore can integrate the advances of semiconductor nanotechnology to the realization and identification of MFs in this hybrid structure.

Majorana fermions in quasi-1D and higher dimensional ultracold fermionic optical lattices

We show that Majorana fermions (MFs) exist in two- and three-dimensional (2D,3D) fermionic optical lattices with strictly 1D spin-orbit coupling (SOC) which has already been realized in ex- periments. For a quasi-1D topological BCS superfluid, there are multiple MFs at each end which are topologically protected by a chiral symmetry. In the generalization to higher dimensions, the multiple MFs form a zero energy flat band. An additional experimentally tunable in-plane Zeeman field drives the system to a topological Fulde-Ferrell (FF) superfluid phase. We find that even though the multiple MFs are robust against the in-plane Zeeman field if the order parameters at the different chains are enforced to be identical, they are destroyed in the self-consistently obtained FF phase where the order parameters are inhomogeneous on the boundaries. Our results are useful to guide the experimentalists on searching for MFs in the context of ultracold fermionic atoms.
