BCS-BEC Crossover and Topological Phase Transition in 3D Spin-Orbit Coupled Degenerate Fermi Gases

We investigate the BCS-BEC crossover in three dimensional degenerate Fermi gases in the presence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and Zeeman field. We show that the superfluid order parameter destroyed by a large Zeeman field can be restored by the SOC. With increasing strengths of the Zeeman field, there is a series of topological quantum phase transitions from a non-topological superfluid state with fully gapped fermionic spectrum to a topological superfluid state with four topologically protected Fermi points (i.e., nodes in the quasiparticle excitation gap) and then to a second topological superfluid state with only two topologically protected Fermi points. The quasiparticle excitations near the Fermi points realize the long-sought low-temperature analog of Weyl fermions of particle physics. We show that the topological phase transitions can be probed using the experimentally realized momentum resolved photoemission spectroscopy.

Quantum Transport of Bosonic Cold Atoms in Double Well Optical Lattices

We numerically investigate, using the time evolving block decimation algorithm, the quantum transport of ultra-cold bosonic atoms in a double well optical lattice through slow and periodic modulation of the lattice parameters (intra- and inter-well tunneling, chemical potential, etc.). The transport of atoms does not depend on the rate of change of the parameters (as along as the change is slow) and can distribute atoms in optical lattices at the quantized level without involving external forces. The transport of atoms depends on the atom filling in each double well and the interaction between atoms. In the strongly interacting region, the bosonic atoms share the same transport properties as non-interacting fermions with quantized transport at the half filling and no atom transport at the integer filling. In the weakly interacting region, the number of the transported atoms is proportional to the atom filling. We show the signature of the quantum transport from the momentum distribution of atoms that can measured in the time of flight image. A semiclassical transport model is developed to explain the numerically observed transport of bosonic atoms in the non-interacting and strongly interacting limits. The scheme may serve as an quantized battery for atomtronics applications.

Exciton polarization, fine structure splitting and quantum dot asymmetry under uniaxial stress

We derive a general relation between the fine structure splitting (FSS) and the exciton polarization angle of self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) under uniaxial stress. We show that the FSS lower bound under external stress can be predicted by the exciton polarization angle and FSS under zero stress. The critical stress can also be determined by monitoring the change in exciton polarization angle. We confirm the theory by performing atomistic pseudopotential calculations for the InAs/GaAs QDs. The work provides a deep insight into the dots asymmetry and their optical properties, and a useful guide in selecting QDs with smallest FSS which are crucial in entangled photon sources applications.

Atomistic theory of spin relaxation in self-assembled In$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$As/GaAs quantum dots at zero magnetic field

We present full atomistic calculations of the spin-flip time (T$_{1}$) of electrons and holes mediated by acoustic phonons in self-assembled In$_{1-x}$Ga$_x$As/GaAs quantum dots at zero magnetic field. At low magnetic field, the first-order process is suppressed, and the second-order process becomes dominant. We find that the spin-phonon-interaction induced spin relaxation time is 40 - 80 s for electrons, and 1 - 20 ms for holes at 4.2 K. The calculated hole-spin relaxation times are in good agreement with recent experiments, which suggests that the two-phonon process is the main relaxation mechanism for hole-spin relaxation in the self-assembled quantum dots at zero field. We further clarify the structural and alloy composition effects on the spin relaxation in the quantum dots.

Atomistic pseudopotential calculations of the optical properties of InAs/InP self-assembled quantum dots

We present a comprehensive study of the optical properties of InAs/InP self-assembled quantum dots (QDs) using an empirical pseudopotential method and configuration interaction treatment of the many-particle effects. The results are compared to those of InAs/GaAs QDs. The main results are: (i) The alignment of emission lines of neutral exciton, charged exciton and biexciton in InAs/InP QDs is quite different from that in InAs/GaAs QDs. (ii) The hidden correlation in InAs/InP QDs is 0.7 - 0.9 meV, smaller than that in InAs/GaAs QDs. (iii) The radiative lifetimes of neutral exciton, charged exciton and biexciton in InAs/InP QDs are about twice longer than those in InAs/GaAs QDs. (v) The phase diagrams of few electrons and holes in InAs/InP QDs differ greatly from those in InAs/GaAs QDs. The filling orders of electrons and holes are shown to obey the Hund's rule and Aufbau principle, and therefore the photoluminescence spectra of highly charged excitons are very different from those of InAs/GaAs QDs.

Quantum correlation and classical correlation dynamics in the spin-boson model

We study the quantum correlation and classical correlation dynamics in a spin-boson model. For two different forms of spectral density, we obtain analytical results and show that the evolutions of both correlations depend closely on the form of the initial state. At the end of evolution, all correlations initially stored in the spin system transfer to reservoirs. It is found that for a large family of initial states, quantum correlation remains equal to the classical correlation during the course of evolution. In addition, there is no increase in the correlations during the course of evolution.

Entanglement dynamics of photon pairs emitted from quantum dot

We present a model to derive the state of the photon pairs generated by the biexciton cascade decay of a self-assembled quantum dot, which agrees well with the experimental result. Furthermore we calculate the concurrence and entanglement sudden death is found in this system with temperature increasing, which prevents quantum dot emits entangled photon pairs at a high temperature. The relationship between the fine structure splitting and the sudden death temperature is provided too.

Phase Compensation Enhancement of Photon Pair Entanglement Generated from Biexciton Decays in Quantum Dots

Exciton fine-structure splittings within quantum dots introduce phase differences between the two biexciton decay paths that greatly reduce the entanglement of photon pairs generated via biexciton recombination. We analyze this problem in the frequency domain and propose a practicable method to compensate the phase difference by inserting a spatial light modulator, which substantially improves the entanglement of the photon pairs without any loss.

Experimental demonstration of photonic entanglement collapse and revival

We demonstrate the collapse and revival features of the entanglement dynamics of different polarization-entangled photon states in a non-Markovian environment. Using an all-optical experimental setup, we show that entanglement can be revived even after it suffers from sudden death. A maximally revived state is shown to violate a Bell's inequality with 4.1 standard deviations which verifies its quantum nature. The revival phenomenon observed in this experiment provides an intriguing perspective on entanglement dynamics.

A general study on the volume dependence of spectral weights in lattice field theory

It has been suggested that the volume dependence of the spectral weight could be utilized to distinguish single and multi-particle states in Monte Carlo simulations. In a recent study using a solvable model, the Lee model, we found that this criteria is applicable only for stable particles and narrow resonances, not for the broad resonances. In this paper, the same question is addressed within the finite size formalism outlined by Lüscher. Using a quantum mechanical scattering model, the conclusion that was found in previous Lee model study is recovered. Then, following similar arguments as in Lüscher's, it is argued that the result is valid for a general massive quantum field theory under the same conditions as the Lüscher's formulae. Using the spectral weight function, a possibility of extracting resonance parameters is also pointed out.

High-concurrence steady-state entanglement of two hole spins in a quantum dot molecular

Entanglement, a non-trivial phenomena manifested in composite quantum system, can be served as a new type of physical resource in the emerging technology of quantum information and quantum computation. However, a quantum entanglement is fragile to the environmental-induced decoherence. Here, we present a novel way to prepare a high-concurrence steady-state entanglement of two hole spins in a quantum dot molecular via optical pumping of trion levels. In this scheme, the spontaneous dispassion is used to induce and stabilize the entanglement with rapid rate. It is firstly shown that under certain conditions, two-qubit singlet state can be generated without requiring the state initialization. Then we study the effect of acoustic phonons and electron tunnelings on the scheme, and show that the concurrence of entangled state can be over 0.95 at temperature $T = 1 $K.

Low-energy $D^{*+}D^0_1$ Scattering and the Resonance-like Structure $Z^+(4430)$

Low-energy scattering of $D^*$ and $D_1$ meson are studied using quenched lattice QCD with improved lattice actions on anisotropic lattices. The calculation is performed within Lüscher's finite-size formalism which establishes the relation between the scattering phase in the infinite volume and the exact energy level in the finite volume. The threshold scattering parameters, namely the scattering length $a_0$ and the effective range $r_0$, for the s-wave scattering in $J^P=0^-$ channel are extracted. After the chiral and continuum extrapolations, we obtain: $a_0=2.52(47)$fm and $r_0=0.7(1)$fm where the errors are purely statistical. Based on these results, we discuss the possibility of a shallow bound state for the two charmed mesons within the non-relativistic potential scattering model. It is argued that, albeit the interaction between the two charmed mesons being attractive, it is unlikely that they can form a shallow bound state in this channel. This calculation provides some useful information on the nature of the newly discovered resonance-like structure $Z^+(4430)$ by the Belle Collaboration.

Hidden correlations of exciton complexes in self-assembled quantum dots and rings

The binding energies of trions ($X^+$, $X^-$) and biexciton (XX) in self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) are very sensitive to the geometry and chemical composition of the QDs, and are random from dots to dots. However, in this letter, we show through analytical and numerical methods that the transition energies of the exciton complexes in self-assembled quantum dots and rings follow a simple and robust rule, i.e., the sum of exciton and biexciton transition energies minus the transition energies of trions is always positive and almost a constant for the same type of quantum dots and rings as a consequence of a pure Coulomb correlation effect. More interestingly, this quantity show a sharp transition when the topology change from a dot to a ring. This {\it hidden} correlation effect, directly measurable in experiments, offers a useful way to understand the photoluminescence spectra of self-assembled quantum dots and rings.

Influence of configuration and acoustic phonons on three-qubit controlled-phase gate

We discuss the configuration and acoustic phonon effect on the conditional phase gate using self assembled quantum dots. As an example, we discuss the simplest three dots conditional phase gate, and we found that the fidelity of conditional phase gate depends strongly on the configuration and temperature. Numerical simulation shows that line-configuration resonant with lower single exciton energy level performs better during the gate operation.

Measurement Induced Quantum Coherence Recovery

We show that measurement can recover the quantum coherence of a qubit in a non-Markovian environment. The experimental demonstration in an optical system is provided by comparing the visibilities (and fidelities) of the final states with and without measurement. This method can be extended to other two-level quantum systems and entangled states in a non-Markovian evolution environment. It may also be used to implement other quantum information processing.

Highly-reduced Fine-structure splitting in InAs/InP quantum dots offering efficient on-demand 1.55 $μ$m entangled photon emitter

To generate entangled photon pairs via quantum dots (QDs), the exciton fine structure splitting (FSS) must be comparable to the exciton homogeneous line width. Yet in the (In,Ga)As/GaAs QD, the intrinsic FSS is about a few tens $μ$eV. To achieve photon entanglement, it is necessary to Cherry-pick a sample with extremely small FSS from a large number of samples, or to apply strong in-plane magnetic field. Using theoretical modeling of the fundamental causes of FSS in QDs, we predict that the intrinsic FSS of InAs/InP QDs is an order of magnitude smaller than that of InAs/GaAs dots, and better yet, their excitonic gap matches the 1.55 $μ$m fiber optic wavelength, therefore offer efficient on-demand entangled photon emitters for long distance quantum communication.

Giant optical anisotropy in cylindrical self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum rings

Using a single-particle atomistic pseudopotential method followed by a many-particle configuration interaction method, we investigate the geometry, electronic structure and optical transitions of a self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum ring (QR), changing its shape continously from a lens-shaped quantum dot (QD) to a nearly one dimensional ring. We find that the biaxial strain in the ring is strongly asymmetric in the plane perpendicular to the QR growth direction, leading to giant optical anisotropy.

Electronic structure of self-assembled InAs/InP quantum dots: A Comparison with self-assembled InAs/GaAs quantum dots

We investigate the electronic structure of the InAs/InP quantum dots using an atomistic pseudopotential method and compare them to those of the InAs/GaAs QDs. We show that even though the InAs/InP and InAs/GaAs dots have the same dot material, their electronic structure differ significantly in certain aspects, especially for holes: (i) The hole levels have a much larger energy spacing in the InAs/InP dots than in the InAs/GaAs dots of corresponding size. (ii) Furthermore, in contrast with the InAs/GaAs dots, where the sizeable hole $p$, $d$ intra-shell level splitting smashes the energy level shell structure, the InAs/InP QDs have a well defined energy level shell structure with small $p$, $d$ level splitting, for holes. (iii) The fundamental exciton energies of the InAs/InP dots are calculated to be around 0.8 eV ($\sim$ 1.55 $μ$m), about 200 meV lower than those of typical InAs/GaAs QDs, mainly due to the smaller lattice mismatch in the InAs/InP dots. (iii) The widths of the exciton $P$ shell and $D$ shell are much narrower in the InAs/InP dots than in the InAs/GaAs dots. (iv) The InAs/GaAs and InAs/InP dots have a reversed light polarization anisotropy along the [100] and [1$\bar{1}$0] directions.
