Scaling of finite size effect of $α$-Rényi entropy in disjointed intervals under dilation

The $α$-Rényi entropy in the gapless models have been obtained by the conformal field theory, which is exact in the thermodynamic limit. However, the calculation of its finite size effect (FSE) is challenging. So far only the FSE in a single interval in the XX model has been understood and the FSE in the other models and in the other conditions are totally unknown. Here we report the FSE of this entropy in disjointed intervals $A = \cup_i A_i$ under a uniform dilation $λA$ in the XY model, showing of a universal scaling law as \begin{equation*} Δ_{λA}^α= Δ_A^αλ^{-η} \mathcal{B}(A, λ), \end{equation*} where $|\mathcal{B}(A, λ)| \le 1$ is a bounded function and $η= \text{min}(2, 2/α)$ when $α< 10$. We verify this relation in the phase boundaries of the XY model, in which the different central charges correspond to the physics of free Fermion and free Boson models. We find that in the disjointed intervals, two FSEs, termed as extrinsic FSE and intrinsic FSE, are required to fully account for the FSE of the entropy. Physically, we find that only the edge modes of the correlation matrix localized at the open ends $\partial A$ have contribution to the total entropy and its FSE. Our results provide some incisive insight into the entanglement entropy in the many-body systems.

Entanglement distribution in fermion model with long-range interaction

How two-party entanglement (TPE) is distributed in the many-body systems? This is a fundamental issue because the total TPE between one party with all the other parties, $\mathcal{C}^N$, is upper bounded by the Coffman, Kundu and Wootters (CKW) monogamy inequality, from which $\mathcal{C}^N \le \sqrt{N-1}$ can be proved by the geometric inequality. Here we explore the total entanglement $\mathcal{C}^\infty$ and the associated total tangle $τ^\infty$ in a $p$-wave free fermion model with long-range interaction, showing that $\mathcal{C}^\infty \sim \mathcal{O}(1)$ and $τ^\infty$ may become vanishing small with the increasing of long-range interaction. However, we always find $\mathcal{C}^\infty \sim 2ξτ^\infty$, where $ξ$ is the truncation length of entanglement, beyond which the TPE is quickly vanished, hence $τ^\infty \sim 1/ξ$. This relation is a direct consequence of the exponential decay of the TPE induced by the long-range interaction. These results unify the results in the Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick (LMG) model and Dicke model and generalize the Koashi, Buzek and Imono bound to the quantum many-body models, with much broader applicability.

Multi-View Document Representation Learning for Open-Domain Dense Retrieval

Dense retrieval has achieved impressive advances in first-stage retrieval from a large-scale document collection, which is built on bi-encoder architecture to produce single vector representation of query and document. However, a document can usually answer multiple potential queries from different views. So the single vector representation of a document is hard to match with multi-view queries, and faces a semantic mismatch problem. This paper proposes a multi-view document representation learning framework, aiming to produce multi-view embeddings to represent documents and enforce them to align with different queries. First, we propose a simple yet effective method of generating multiple embeddings through viewers. Second, to prevent multi-view embeddings from collapsing to the same one, we further propose a global-local loss with annealed temperature to encourage the multiple viewers to better align with different potential queries. Experiments show our method outperforms recent works and achieves state-of-the-art results.

Annihilation diagram contribution to charmonium masses

In this work, we generate gauge configurations with $N_f=2$ dynamical charm quarks on anisotropic lattices. The mass shift of $1S$ and $1P$ charmonia owing to the charm quark annihilation effect can be investigated directly in a manner of unitary theory. The distillation method is adopted to treat the charm quark annihilation diagrams at a very precise level. For $1S$ charmonia, the charm quark annihilation effect almost does not change the $J/ψ$ mass, but lifts the $η_c$ mass by approximately 3-4 MeV. For $1P$ charmonia, this effect results in positive mass shifts of approximately 1 MeV for $χ_{c1}$ and $h_c$, but decreases the $χ_{c2}$ mass by approximately 3 MeV. We have not obtain a reliable result for the mass shift of $χ_{c0}$. In addition, it is observed that the spin averaged mass of the spin-triplet $1P$ charmonia is in a good agreement with the $h_c$, as expected by the non-relativistic quark model and measured by experiments.

The Glueball content of $η_c$

We carry out the first lattice QCD derivation of the mixing energy and the mixing angle of the pseudoscalar charmonium and glueball on two gauge ensembles with $N_f=2$ degenerate dynamical charm quarks. The mixing energy is determined to be $49(6)$ MeV on the near physical charm ensemble, which seems insensitive to charm quark mass. By the assumption that $X(2370)$ is predominantly a pseudoscalar glueball, the mixing angle is determined to be approximately $4.6(6)^\circ$, which results in a $+3.9(9)$ MeV mass shift of the ground state pseudoscalar charmonium. In the mean time, the mixing can raise the total width of the pseudoscalar charmonium by 7.2(8) MeV, which explains to some extent the relative large total width of the $η_c$ meson. As a result, the branching fraction of $η_c\to γγ$ can be understood in this $c\bar{c}$-glueball mixing framework. On the other hand, the possible discrepancy of the theoretical predictions and the experimental results of the partial width of $J/ψ\toγη_c$ cannot be alleviated by the $c\bar{c}$-glueball mixing picture yet, which demands future precise experimental measurements of this partial width.

Realization of fast all-microwave CZ gates with a tunable coupler

The development of high-fidelity two-qubit quantum gates is essential for digital quantum computing. Here, we propose and realize an all-microwave parametric Controlled-Z (CZ) gates by coupling strength modulation in a superconducting Transmon qubit system with tunable couplers. After optimizing the design of the tunable coupler together with the control pulse numerically, we experimentally realized a 100 ns CZ gate with high fidelity of 99.38%$ \pm$0.34% and the control error being 0.1%. We note that our CZ gates are not affected by pulse distortion and do not need pulse correction, {providing a solution for the real-time pulse generation in a dynamic quantum feedback circuit}. With the expectation of utilizing our all-microwave control scheme to reduce the number of control lines through frequency multiplexing in the future, our scheme draws a blueprint for the high-integrable quantum hardware design.

Ruling out real-valued standard formalism of quantum theory

Standard quantum theory was formulated with complex-valued Schrodinger equations, wave functions, operators, and Hilbert spaces. Previous work attempted to simulate quantum systems using only real numbers by exploiting an enlarged Hilbert space. A fundamental question arises: are complex numbers really necessary in the standard formalism of quantum theory? To answer this question, a quantum game has been developed to distinguish standard quantum theory from its real-number analog by revealing a contradiction in the maximum game scores between a high-fidelity multi-qubit quantum experiment and players using only real-number quantum theory. Here, using superconducting qubits, we faithfully experimentally implement the quantum game based on entanglement swapping with a state-of-the-art fidelity of 0.952(1), which beats the real-number bound of 7.66 by 43 standard deviations. Our results disprove the real-number formulation and establish the indispensable role of complex numbers in the standard quantum theory.

Realization of an Error-Correcting Surface Code with Superconducting Qubits

Quantum error correction is a critical technique for transitioning from noisy intermediate-scale quantum (NISQ) devices to fully fledged quantum computers. The surface code, which has a high threshold error rate, is the leading quantum error correction code for two-dimensional grid architecture. So far, the repeated error correction capability of the surface code has not been realized experimentally. Here, we experimentally implement an error-correcting surface code, the distance-3 surface code which consists of 17 qubits, on the \textit{Zuchongzhi} 2.1 superconducting quantum processor. By executing several consecutive error correction cycles, the logical error can be significantly reduced after applying corrections, achieving the repeated error correction of surface code for the first time. This experiment represents a fully functional instance of an error-correcting surface code, providing a key step on the path towards scalable fault-tolerant quantum computing.

Perspective on witnessing entanglement in hybrid quantum systems

Hybrid quantum systems aim at combining the advantages of different physical systems and to produce novel quantum devices. In particular, the hybrid combination of superconducting circuits and spins in solid-state crystals is a versatile platform to explore many quantum electrodynamics problems. Recently, the remote coupling of nitrogen-vacancy center spins in diamond via a superconducting bus was demonstrated. However, a rigorous experimental test of the quantum nature of this hybrid system and in particular entanglement is still missing. We review the theoretical ideas to generate and detect entanglement, and present our own scheme to achieve this.

Realization of high-fidelity CZ gates in extensible superconducting qubits design with a tunable coupler

High-fidelity two-qubits gates are essential for the realization of large-scale quantum computation and simulation. Tunable coupler design is used to reduce the problem of parasitic coupling and frequency crowding in many-qubit systems and thus thought to be advantageous. Here we design a extensible 5-qubit system in which center transmon qubit can couple to every four near-neighbor qubit via a capacitive tunable coupler and experimentally demonstrate high-fidelity controlled-phase (CZ) gate by manipulating center qubit and one near-neighbor qubit. Speckle purity benchmarking (SPB) and cross entrophy benchmarking (XEB) are used to assess the purity fidelity and the fidelity of the CZ gate. The average purity fidelity of the CZ gate is 99.69$\pm$0.04\% and the average fidelity of the CZ gate is 99.65$\pm$0.04\% which means the control error is about 0.04\%. Our work will help resovle many chanllenges in the implementation of large scale quantum systems.

Topological superfluids in two-dimensional Fermi gas with Rashba spin-orbit coupling

The realization of spin-orbit coupling (SOC) in ultracold atoms has triggered an intensive exploring of topological superfluids in the degenerate Fermi gases based on mean-field theory, which has not yet been reported in experiments. Here, we demonstrate the topological phase transitions in the system via the numerically exact quantum Monte Carlo method. Without prior assumptions, our unbiased real-space calculation shows that spin-orbit coupling can stabilize an unconventional pairing in the weak SOC regime, in which the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov pairing coexists with the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer pairing. Furthermore, we use the jumps in the spin polarization at the time-reversal invariant momenta to qualify the topological phase transition, where we find the critical exponent deviated from the mean-field theory. Our results pave the way for the searching of unconventional pairing and topological superfluids with degenerate Fermi gases.

Quantum Computational Advantage via 60-Qubit 24-Cycle Random Circuit Sampling

To ensure a long-term quantum computational advantage, the quantum hardware should be upgraded to withstand the competition of continuously improved classical algorithms and hardwares. Here, we demonstrate a superconducting quantum computing systems \textit{Zuchongzhi} 2.1, which has 66 qubits in a two-dimensional array in a tunable coupler architecture. The readout fidelity of \textit{Zuchongzhi} 2.1 is considerably improved to an average of 97.74\%. The more powerful quantum processor enables us to achieve larger-scale random quantum circuit sampling, with a system scale of up to 60 qubits and 24 cycles. The achieved sampling task is about 6 orders of magnitude more difficult than that of Sycamore [Nature \textbf{574}, 505 (2019)] in the classic simulation, and 3 orders of magnitude more difficult than the sampling task on \textit{Zuchongzhi} 2.0 [arXiv:2106.14734 (2021)]. The time consumption of classically simulating random circuit sampling experiment using state-of-the-art classical algorithm and supercomputer is extended to tens of thousands of years (about $4.8\times 10^4$ years), while \textit{Zuchongzhi} 2.1 only takes about 4.2 hours, thereby significantly enhancing the quantum computational advantage.

Experimental Quantum Generative Adversarial Networks for Image Generation

Quantum machine learning is expected to be one of the first practical applications of near-term quantum devices. Pioneer theoretical works suggest that quantum generative adversarial networks (GANs) may exhibit a potential exponential advantage over classical GANs, thus attracting widespread attention. However, it remains elusive whether quantum GANs implemented on near-term quantum devices can actually solve real-world learning tasks. Here, we devise a flexible quantum GAN scheme to narrow this knowledge gap, which could accomplish image generation with arbitrarily high-dimensional features, and could also take advantage of quantum superposition to train multiple examples in parallel. For the first time, we experimentally achieve the learning and generation of real-world hand-written digit images on a superconducting quantum processor. Moreover, we utilize a gray-scale bar dataset to exhibit the competitive performance between quantum GANs and the classical GANs based on multilayer perceptron and convolutional neural network architectures, respectively, benchmarked by the Fréchet Distance score. Our work provides guidance for developing advanced quantum generative models on near-term quantum devices and opens up an avenue for exploring quantum advantages in various GAN-related learning tasks.

Learning from Multiple Noisy Augmented Data Sets for Better Cross-Lingual Spoken Language Understanding

Lack of training data presents a grand challenge to scaling out spoken language understanding (SLU) to low-resource languages. Although various data augmentation approaches have been proposed to synthesize training data in low-resource target languages, the augmented data sets are often noisy, and thus impede the performance of SLU models. In this paper we focus on mitigating noise in augmented data. We develop a denoising training approach. Multiple models are trained with data produced by various augmented methods. Those models provide supervision signals to each other. The experimental results show that our method outperforms the existing state of the art by 3.05 and 4.24 percentage points on two benchmark datasets, respectively. The code will be made open sourced on github.

Color halo scenario of charmonium-like hybrids

The internal structures of $J^{PC}=1^{--}, (0,1,2)^{-+}$ charmonium-like hybrids are investigated under lattice QCD in the quenched approximation. We define the Bethe-Salpeter wave function $Φ_n(r)$ in the Coulomb gauge as the matrix element of a spatially extended hybrid-like operator $\bar{c}{c}g$ between the vacuum and $n$-th state for each $J^{PC}$ with $r$ being the spatial separation between a localized $\bar{c}c$ component and the chromomagnetic strength tensor. These wave functions exhibit some similarities for states with the aforementioned different quantum numbers, and their $r$-behaviors (no node for the ground states and one node for the first excited states) imply that $r$ can be a meaningful dynamical variable for these states. Additionally, the mass splittings of the ground states and first excited states of charmonium-like hybrids in these channels are obtained for the first time to be approximately 1.2-1.4 GeV. These results do not support the flux-tube description of heavy-quarkonium-like hybrids in the Born-Oppenheimer approximation. In contrast, a charmonium-like hybrid can be viewed as a "color halo" charmonium for which a relatively localized color octet $\bar{c}c$ is surrounded by gluonic degrees of freedom, which can readily decay into a charmonium state along with one or more light hadrons. The color halo picture is compatible with the decay properties of $Y(4260)$ and suggests LHCb and BelleII to search for $(0,1,2)^{-+}$ charmonium-like hybrids in $χ_{c0,1,2}η$ and $J/ψω(ϕ)$ final states.

A Joint and Domain-Adaptive Approach to Spoken Language Understanding

Spoken Language Understanding (SLU) is composed of two subtasks: intent detection (ID) and slot filling (SF). There are two lines of research on SLU. One jointly tackles these two subtasks to improve their prediction accuracy, and the other focuses on the domain-adaptation ability of one of the subtasks. In this paper, we attempt to bridge these two lines of research and propose a joint and domain adaptive approach to SLU. We formulate SLU as a constrained generation task and utilize a dynamic vocabulary based on domain-specific ontology. We conduct experiments on the ASMixed and MTOD datasets and achieve competitive performance with previous state-of-the-art joint models. Besides, results show that our joint model can be effectively adapted to a new domain.

Quantum walks on a programmable two-dimensional 62-qubit superconducting processor

Quantum walks are the quantum mechanical analogue of classical random walks and an extremely powerful tool in quantum simulations, quantum search algorithms, and even for universal quantum computing. In our work, we have designed and fabricated an 8x8 two-dimensional square superconducting qubit array composed of 62 functional qubits. We used this device to demonstrate high fidelity single and two particle quantum walks. Furthermore, with the high programmability of the quantum processor, we implemented a Mach-Zehnder interferometer where the quantum walker coherently traverses in two paths before interfering and exiting. By tuning the disorders on the evolution paths, we observed interference fringes with single and double walkers. Our work is an essential milestone in the field, brings future larger scale quantum applications closer to realization on these noisy intermediate-scale quantum processors.

Floquet Prethermal Phase Protected by U(1) Symmetry on a Superconducting Quantum Processor

Periodically driven systems, or Floquet systems, exhibit many novel dynamics and interesting out-of-equilibrium phases of matter. Those phases arising with the quantum systems' symmetries, such as global $U(1)$ symmetry, can even show dynamical stability with symmetry-protection. Here we experimentally demonstrate a $U(1)$ symmetry-protected prethermal phase, via performing a digital-analog quantum simulation on a superconducting quantum processor. The dynamical stability of this phase is revealed by its robustness against external perturbations. We also find that the spin glass order parameter in this phase is stabilized by the interaction between the spins. Our work reveals a promising prospect in discovering emergent quantum dynamical phases with digital-analog quantum simulators.
