Torus actions, weighted blow-ups, and desingularization of plane curves

Given a singular hypersurface in a regular 2-dimensional scheme essentially of finite type over a field, we construct an embedded resolution of singularities by weighted blow-ups. This differs from our earlier work which required multi-weighted blow-ups. We deduce an inductive argument, despite the fact that higher dimensional tangent spaces arise, by taking torus actions and equivariant centers into account. In addition, we do not have to restrict to perfect base fields.

Resolving plane curves using stack-theoretic blow-ups

Stack-theoretic blow-ups have proven to be efficient in resolving singularities over fields of characteristic zero. In this article, we move forward towards positive characteristic where new challenges arise. In particular, the dimension of the tangent space of the Artin stack created after a weighted blow-up may increase, which makes it hard to apply inductive arguments -- even if the maximal order decreases. We focus on the case of curve singularities embedded into a smooth surface defined over a perfect field. For this special situation we propose a solution to overcome the inductive challenge through canonically constructed multi-weighted blow-ups.

Logarithmic resolution via multi-weighted blow-ups

We first introduce and study the notion of multi-weighted blow-ups, which is later used to systematically construct an explicit yet efficient algorithm for functorial logarithmic resolution in characteristic zero, in the sense of Hironaka. Specifically, for a singular, reduced closed subscheme $X$ of a smooth scheme $Y$ over a field of characteristic zero, we resolve the singularities of $X$ by taking proper transforms $X_i \subset Y_i$ along a sequence of multi-weighted blow-ups $Y_N \to Y_{N-1} \to \dotsb \to Y_0 = Y$ which satisfies the following properties: (i) the $Y_i$ are smooth Artin stacks with simple normal crossing exceptional loci; (ii) at each step we always blow up the worst singular locus of $X_i$, and witness on $X_{i+1}$ an immediate improvement in singularities; (iii) and finally, the singular locus of $X$ is transformed into a simple normal crossing divisor on $X_N$.

The K-moduli space of a family of conic bundle threefolds

We describe the 6-dimensional compact K-moduli space of Fano threefolds in deformation family No 2.18. These Fano threefolds are double covers of $\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^2$ branched along smooth $(2,2)$-surfaces, and Cheltsov--Fujita--Kishimoto--Park proved that any smooth Fano threefold in this family is K-stable. A member of family No 2.18 admits the structures of a conic bundle and a quadric surface bundle. We prove that K-polystable limits of these Fano threefolds admit conic bundle structures, but not necessarily del Pezzo fibration structures. We study this K-moduli space via the moduli space of log Fano pairs $(\mathbb P^1\times\mathbb P^2, c R)$ for $c=1/2$ and $R$ a $(2,2)$-divisor, which we construct using wall-crossings. In the case where the divisor is proportional to the anti-canonical divisor, the first author, together with Ascher and Liu, developed a framework for wall crossings in K-moduli and proved that there are only finitely many walls, which occur at rational values of the coefficient $c$. This paper constructs the first example of wall-crossing in K-moduli in the non-proportional setting, and we find a wall at an irrational value of $c$. In particular, we obtain explicit descriptions of the GIT and K-moduli spaces (for $c \leq 1/2$) of these $(2,2)$-divisors. Furthermore, using the conic bundle structure, we study the relationship with the GIT moduli space of plane quartic curves.

Logarithmic resolution via weighted toroidal blow-ups

Let $X$ be a fs logarithmic scheme that is generically logarithmically smooth, and that admits a strict closed embedding into a logarithmically smooth scheme $Y$ over a field $\kk$ of characteristic zero. We construct a simple and fast procedure to functorial logarithmic resolution of $X$, where the end result is in particular a stack-theoretic modification $X' \rightarrow X$ such that $X'$ is logarithmically smooth over $k$. In particular, if $X$ is a closed subscheme of a smooth $k$-scheme $Y$, the procedure not only shares the same desirable features as the 'dream resolution algorithm' of Abramovich-Temkin-Wlodarczyk (arXiv:1906.07106), but also accounts for a key feature of Hironaka's Main Theorem I, which was not addressed in arXiv:1906.07106. As a consequence, we recover a different and simpler approach to Hironaka's resolution of singularities in characteristic zero.

Around the motivic monodromy conjecture for non-degenerate hypersurfaces

We provide a new, geometric proof of the motivic monodromy conjecture for non-degenerate hypersurfaces in dimension $3$, which has been proven previously by the work of Lemahieu--Van Proeyen and Bories--Veys. More generally, given a non-degenerate complex polynomial $f$ in any number of variables and a set $\mathbf{B}$ of $B_1$-facets of the Newton polyhedron of $f$ with consistent base directions, we construct a stack-theoretic embedded desingularization of $f^{-1}(0)$ above the origin, whose set of numerical data excludes any known candidate pole of the motivic zeta function of $f$ at the origin that arises solely from facets in $\mathbf{B}$. We anticipate that the constructions herein might inspire new insights as well as new possibilities towards a solution of the conjecture.
