Semi-Semantic Line-Cluster Assisted Monocular SLAM for Indoor Environments

This paper presents a novel method to reduce the scale drift for indoor monocular simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM). We leverage the prior knowledge that in the indoor environment, the line segments form tight clusters, e.g. many door frames in a straight corridor are of the same shape, size and orientation, so the same edges of these door frames form a tight line segment cluster. We implement our method in the popular ORB-SLAM2, which also serves as our baseline. In the front end we detect the line segments in each frame and incrementally cluster them in the 3D space. In the back end, we optimize the map imposing the constraint that the line segments of the same cluster should be the same. Experimental results show that our proposed method successfully reduces the scale drift for indoor monocular SLAM.

One-dimensional van der Waals heterostructures

Property by design is one appealing idea in material synthesis but hard to achieve in practice. A recent successful example is the demonstration of van der Waals (vdW) heterostructures,1-3 in which atomic layers are stacked on each other and different ingredients can be combined beyond symmetry and lattice matching. This concept, usually described as a nanoscale Lego blocks, allows to build sophisticated structures layer by layer. However, this concept has been so far limited in two dimensional (2D) materials. Here we show a class of new material where different layers are coaxially (instead of planarly) stacked. As the structure is in one dimensional (1D) form, we name it "1D vdW heterostructures". We demonstrate a 5 nm diameter nanotube consisting of three different materials: an inner conductive carbon nanotube (CNT), a middle insulating hexagonal boron nitride nanotube (BNNT) and an outside semiconducting MoS2 nanotube. As the technique is highly applicable to other materials in the current 2D libraries,4-6 we anticipate our strategy to be a starting point for discovering a class of new semiconducting nanotube materials. A plethora of function-designable 1D heterostructures will appear after the combination of CNTs, BNNTs and semiconducting nanotubes.

Point-cloud-based place recognition using CNN feature extraction

This paper proposes a novel point-cloud-based place recognition system that adopts a deep learning approach for feature extraction. By using a convolutional neural network pre-trained on color images to extract features from a range image without fine-tuning on extra range images, significant improvement has been observed when compared to using hand-crafted features. The resulting system is illumination invariant, rotation invariant and robust against moving objects that are unrelated to the place identity. Apart from the system itself, we also bring to the community a new place recognition dataset containing both point cloud and grayscale images covering a full $360^\circ$ environmental view. In addition, the dataset is organized in such a way that it facilitates experimental validation with respect to rotation invariance or robustness against unrelated moving objects separately.

Mobile Robot Localisation and Navigation Using LEGO NXT and Ultrasonic Sensor

Mobile robots are becoming increasingly important both for individuals and industries. Mobile robotic technology is not only utilised by experts in this field but is also very popular among amateurs. However, implementing a mobile robot to perform tasks autonomously can be expensive because of the need for various types of sensors and the high price of robot platforms. Hence, in this paper we present a mobile robot localisation and navigation system which uses a LEGO ultrasonic sensor in an indoor map based on the LEGO MINDSTORM NXT. This provides an affordable and ready-to-use option for most robot fans. In this paper, an effective method is proposed to extract useful information from the distorted readings collected by the ultrasonic sensor. Then, the particle filter is used to localise the robot. After robot's position is estimated, a sampling-based path planning method is proposed for the robot navigation. This method reduces the robot accumulative motion error by minimising robot turning times and covering distances. The robot localisation and navigation algorithms are implemented in MATLAB. Simulation results show an average accuracy between 1 and 3 cm for three different indoor map locations. Furthermore, experiments performed in a real setup show the effectiveness of the proposed methods.

PointSeg: Real-Time Semantic Segmentation Based on 3D LiDAR Point Cloud

In this paper, we propose PointSeg, a real-time end-to-end semantic segmentation method for road-objects based on spherical images. We take the spherical image, which is transformed from the 3D LiDAR point clouds, as input of the convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to predict the point-wise semantic map. To make PointSeg applicable on a mobile system, we build the model based on the light-weight network, SqueezeNet, with several improvements. It maintains a good balance between memory cost and prediction performance. Our model is trained on spherical images and label masks projected from the KITTI 3D object detection dataset. Experiments show that PointSeg can achieve competitive accuracy with 90fps on a single GPU 1080ti. which makes it quite compatible for autonomous driving applications.

PCR-Pro: 3D Sparse and Different Scale Point Clouds Registration and Robust Estimation of Information Matrix For Pose Graph SLAM

For both indoor and outdoor environments, we propose an efficient and novel method for different scales and sparse 3D point clouds registration that cannot be handled by the current popular ICP approaches. Our algorithm efficiently detects the scale difference between point clouds and uses the keyframes to estimate the relative pose for calculating the scale difference. The algorithm applies a filter and computes the final transformation which coverages to a global minimum. The good estimation of transform and scale helps in the calculation of the covariance matrix using a closed form solution efficiently. This covariance between point clouds helps in the estimation of information matrix for pose-graph SLAM.

Multiple Lane Detection Algorithm Based on Optimised Dense Disparity Map Estimation

Lane detection is very important for self-driving vehicles. In recent years, computer stereo vision has been prevalently used to enhance the accuracy of the lane detection systems. This paper mainly presents a multiple lane detection algorithm developed based on optimised dense disparity map estimation, where the disparity information obtained at time t_{n} is utilised to optimise the process of disparity estimation at time t_{n+1}. This is achieved by estimating the road model at time t_{n} and then controlling the search range for the disparity estimation at time t_{n+1}. The lanes are then detected using our previously published algorithm, where the vanishing point information is used to model the lanes. The experimental results illustrate that the runtime of the disparity estimation is reduced by around 37% and the accuracy of the lane detection is about 99%.

Real-Time Subpixel Fast Bilateral Stereo

Stereo vision technique has been widely used in robotic systems to acquire 3-D information. In recent years, many researchers have applied bilateral filtering in stereo vision to adaptively aggregate the matching costs. This has greatly improved the accuracy of the estimated disparity maps. However, the process of filtering the whole cost volume is very time consuming and therefore the researchers have to resort to some powerful hardware for the real-time purpose. This paper presents the implementation of fast bilateral stereo on a state-of-the-art GPU. By highly exploiting the parallel computing architecture of the GPU, the fast bilateral stereo performs in real time when processing the Middlebury stereo datasets.

Fast Rigid 3D Registration Solution: A Simple Method Free of SVD and Eigen-Decomposition

A novel solution is obtained to solve the rigid 3D registration problem, motivated by previous eigen-decomposition approaches. Different from existing solvers, the proposed algorithm does not require sophisticated matrix operations e.g. singular value decomposition or eigenvalue decomposition. Instead, the optimal eigenvector of the point cross-covariance matrix can be computed within several iterations. It is also proven that the optimal rotation matrix can be directly computed for cases without need of quaternion. The simple framework provides very easy approach of integer-implementation on embedded platforms. Simulations on noise-corrupted point clouds have verified the robustness and computation speed of the proposed method. The final results indicate that the proposed algorithm is accurate, robust and owns over $60\% \sim 80\%$ less computation time than representatives. It has also been applied to real-world applications for faster relative robotic navigation.

Curiosity-driven Exploration for Mapless Navigation with Deep Reinforcement Learning

This paper investigates exploration strategies of Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) methods to learn navigation policies for mobile robots. In particular, we augment the normal external reward for training DRL algorithms with intrinsic reward signals measured by curiosity. We test our approach in a mapless navigation setting, where the autonomous agent is required to navigate without the occupancy map of the environment, to targets whose relative locations can be easily acquired through low-cost solutions (e.g., visible light localization, Wi-Fi signal localization). We validate that the intrinsic motivation is crucial for improving DRL performance in tasks with challenging exploration requirements. Our experimental results show that our proposed method is able to more effectively learn navigation policies, and has better generalization capabilities in previously unseen environments. A video of our experimental results can be found at https://goo.gl/pWbpcF.

Learning Warped Guidance for Blind Face Restoration

This paper studies the problem of blind face restoration from an unconstrained blurry, noisy, low-resolution, or compressed image (i.e., degraded observation). For better recovery of fine facial details, we modify the problem setting by taking both the degraded observation and a high-quality guided image of the same identity as input to our guided face restoration network (GFRNet). However, the degraded observation and guided image generally are different in pose, illumination and expression, thereby making plain CNNs (e.g., U-Net) fail to recover fine and identity-aware facial details. To tackle this issue, our GFRNet model includes both a warping subnetwork (WarpNet) and a reconstruction subnetwork (RecNet). The WarpNet is introduced to predict flow field for warping the guided image to correct pose and expression (i.e., warped guidance), while the RecNet takes the degraded observation and warped guidance as input to produce the restoration result. Due to that the ground-truth flow field is unavailable, landmark loss together with total variation regularization are incorporated to guide the learning of WarpNet. Furthermore, to make the model applicable to blind restoration, our GFRNet is trained on the synthetic data with versatile settings on blur kernel, noise level, downsampling scale factor, and JPEG quality factor. Experiments show that our GFRNet not only performs favorably against the state-of-the-art image and face restoration methods, but also generates visually photo-realistic results on real degraded facial images.

RRT* Combined with GVO for Real-time Nonholonomic Robot Navigation in Dynamic Environment

Challenges persist in nonholonomic robot navigation in dynamic environments. This paper presents a framework for such navigation based on the model of generalized velocity obstacles (GVO). The idea of velocity obstacles has been well studied and developed for obstacle avoidance since being proposed in 1998. Though it has been proved to be successful, most studies have assumed equations of motion to be linear, which limits their application to holonomic robots. In addition, more attention has been paid to the immediate reaction of robots, while advance planning has been neglected. By applying the GVO model to differential drive robots and by combining it with RRT*, we reduce the uncertainty of the robot trajectory, thus further reducing the range of concern, and save both computation time and running time. By introducing uncertainty for the dynamic obstacles with a Kalman filter, we dilute the risk of considering the obstacles as uniformly moving along a straight line and guarantee the safety. Special concern is given to path generation, including curvature check, making the generated path feasible for nonholonomic robots. We experimentally demonstrate the feasibility of the framework.

A Survey of Deep Network Solutions for Learning Control in Robotics: From Reinforcement to Imitation

Deep learning techniques have been widely applied, achieving state-of-the-art results in various fields of study. This survey focuses on deep learning solutions that target learning control policies for robotics applications. We carry out our discussions on the two main paradigms for learning control with deep networks: deep reinforcement learning and imitation learning. For deep reinforcement learning (DRL), we begin from traditional reinforcement learning algorithms, showing how they are extended to the deep context and effective mechanisms that could be added on top of the DRL algorithms. We then introduce representative works that utilize DRL to solve navigation and manipulation tasks in robotics. We continue our discussion on methods addressing the challenge of the reality gap for transferring DRL policies trained in simulation to real-world scenarios, and summarize robotics simulation platforms for conducting DRL research. For imitation leaning, we go through its three main categories, behavior cloning, inverse reinforcement learning and generative adversarial imitation learning, by introducing their formulations and their corresponding robotics applications. Finally, we discuss the open challenges and research frontiers.

Solution-processed ZnO as the efficient passivation and electron selective layer of silicon solar cells

Solution-processed intrinsic ZnO and Al doped ZnO (ZnO:Al) were spin coated on textured n-type c-Si wafer to replace the phosphorus doped amorphous silicon as the electron selective transport layer (ESTL) of the Si heterojunction (SHJ) solar cells. Besides the function of electron selective transportation, the non-doped ZnO was found to possess certain passivation effect on c-Si wafer. The SHJ solar cells with different combinations of passivation layer (intrinsic a-Si:H, SiOx and non-doped ZnO) and electron transport layer (non-doped ZnO and ZnO:Al ) were fabricated and compared. An efficiency up to 18.46% was achieved on a SHJ solar cell with an a-Si:H/ZnO:Al double layer back structure. And, the all solution-processed non-doped ZnO/ZnO:Al combination layer presents fairly good electron selective transportation property for SHJ solar cell, resulting in an efficiency of 17.13%. The carrier transport based on energy band diagrams of the rear side of the solar cells has been discussed related to the performance of the SHJ solar cells.

Ionic Modulation of Interfacial Magnetism through Electrostatic Doping in Pt/YIG bilayer heterostructure

Voltage modulation of yttrium iron garnet (YIG) with compactness, high speed response, energy efficiency and both practical/theoretical siginificances can be widely applied to various YIG based spintronics such as spin Hall, spin pumping, spin Seeback effects. Here we initial an ionic modulation of interfacial magnetism process on YIG/Pt bilayer heterostructures, where the Pt capping would influence the ferromagnetic (FMR) field position significantly, and realize a significant magnetism enhancement in bilayer system. A large voltage induced FMR field shifts of 690 Oe has been achieved in YIG (13 nm)/Pt (3 nm) multilayer heterostructures under a small voltage bias of 4.5 V. The remarkable ME tunability comes from voltage induced extra FM ordering in Pt metal layer near the Pt/YIG interface. The first-principle theoretical simulation reveal that the electrostatic doping induced Pt5+ ions have strong magnetic ordering due to uncompensated d orbit electrons. The large voltage control of FMR change pave a foundation towards novel voltage tunable YIG based spintronics.

Socially Compliant Navigation through Raw Depth Inputs with Generative Adversarial Imitation Learning

We present an approach for mobile robots to learn to navigate in dynamic environments with pedestrians via raw depth inputs, in a socially compliant manner. To achieve this, we adopt a generative adversarial imitation learning (GAIL) strategy, which improves upon a pre-trained behavior cloning policy. Our approach overcomes the disadvantages of previous methods, as they heavily depend on the full knowledge of the location and velocity information of nearby pedestrians, which not only requires specific sensors, but also the extraction of such state information from raw sensory input could consume much computation time. In this paper, our proposed GAIL-based model performs directly on raw depth inputs and plans in real-time. Experiments show that our GAIL-based approach greatly improves the safety and efficiency of the behavior of mobile robots from pure behavior cloning. The real-world deployment also shows that our method is capable of guiding autonomous vehicles to navigate in a socially compliant manner directly through raw depth inputs. In addition, we release a simulation plugin for modeling pedestrian behaviors based on the social force model.

Calculating Semantic Similarity between Academic Articles using Topic Event and Ontology

Determining semantic similarity between academic documents is crucial to many tasks such as plagiarism detection, automatic technical survey and semantic search. Current studies mostly focus on semantic similarity between concepts, sentences and short text fragments. However, document-level semantic matching is still based on statistical information in surface level, neglecting article structures and global semantic meanings, which may cause the deviation in document understanding. In this paper, we focus on the document-level semantic similarity issue for academic literatures with a novel method. We represent academic articles with topic events that utilize multiple information profiles, such as research purposes, methodologies and domains to integrally describe the research work, and calculate the similarity between topic events based on the domain ontology to acquire the semantic similarity between articles. Experiments show that our approach achieves significant performance compared to state-of-the-art methods.
