VQ-VAE Based Digital Semantic Communication with Importance-Aware OFDM Transmission

Semantic communication (SemCom) significantly reduces redundant data and improves transmission efficiency by extracting the latent features of information. However, most of the conventional deep learning-based SemCom systems focus on analog transmission and lack in compatibility with practical digital communications. This paper proposes a vector quantized-variational autoencoder (VQ-VAE) based digital SemCom system that directly transmits the semantic features and incorporates the importance-aware orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) transmission to enhance the SemCom performance, where the VQ-VAE generates a discrete codebook shared between the transmitter and receiver. At transmitter, the latent semantic features are firstly extracted by VQ-VAE, and then the shared codebook is adopted to match these features, which are subsequently transformed into a discrete version to adapt the digital transmission. To protect the semantic information, an importance-aware OFDM transmission strategy is proposed to allocate the key features near the OFDM reference signals, where the feature importance is derived from the gradient-based method. At the receiver, the features are rematched with the shared codebook to further correct errors. Finally, experimental results demonstrate that our proposed scheme outperforms the conventional DeepSC and achieves better reconstruction performance under low SNR region.

Dense Matter in Neutron Stars with eXTP

In this White Paper, we present the potential of the enhanced X-ray Timing and Polarimetry (eXTP) mission to constrain the equation of state of dense matter in neutron stars, exploring regimes not directly accessible to terrestrial experiments. By observing a diverse population of neutron stars - including isolated objects, X-ray bursters, and accreting systems - eXTP's unique combination of timing, spectroscopy, and polarimetry enables high-precision measurements of compactness, spin, surface temperature, polarimetric signals, and timing irregularity. These multifaceted observations, combined with advances in theoretical modeling, pave the way toward a comprehensive description of the properties and phases of dense matter from the crust to the core of neutron stars. Under development by an international Consortium led by the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the eXTP mission is planned to be launched in early 2030.

Insight-HXMT observations of the 2023 outburst in Aql X-1

We conducted an analysis of the continuum during the onset and initial decline phases of the 2023 outburst in transient neutron star low-mass X-ray binary Aql X$-$1 using broadband observations from the \textit{Insight-Hard X-ray Modulation Telescope (Insight-HXMT)} instrument. To determine the most appropriate model for the continuum of this outburst, we employed three models to explore the evolution of the spectral component. These observations revealed that the source transitions from the hard state to the soft state. The disk-corona and sphere-corona models both adequately described the spectra of the hard state, while the double blackbody model became preferable after the hard X-ray emission ($>$25 keV) disappeared during the state transition. In the soft state, the total emission is dominated by changes in the disk and other blackbody components. The combination of the sphere-corona model and the double blackbody model is the most suitable model for this outburst. The results suggest that as the source transitioned into the soft state, the emission from the boundary layer was enhanced, and a hot spot occurred. Notably, we identified two type-I X-ray bursts, one of which exhibited a significant hard X-ray deficit (significance $\sim$ 4.82 $\sigma$), which indicates that \textit{Insight-HXMT} has the capability to capture the evolution of the corona in a single burst.

Spectral properties of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636-53, XTE J1739-285 and MAXI J1816-195

We investigated simultaneous NICER plus NuSTAR observations of three neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636-53, XTE J1739-285 and MAXI J1816-195 using the latest reflection models, with the seed photons feeding into the corona originating from either the neutron star (NS) or the accretion disk. We found that, for the sources in the hard spectral state, more than $\sim$ 50% of the NS photons enter into the corona if NS provides seed photons, while only $\sim$ 3%-5% disk photons go to the corona if seed photons come from the disk. This finding, together with the derived small height of the corona, favors the lamp-post geometry or boundary layer scenario where the corona is close to the central neutron star. Additionally, we found that the source of the seed photons has big influence in the significance of the NS radiation, especially for the soft spectral state. This result may help explain why the NS radiation in MAXI J1816-195 is weak in the previous work. More importantly, for the first time, we explored the properties of the corona in the NS systems with the compactness ($l-\theta$) diagram. We found that the corona in the NS systems all lie in the left side of the pair-production forbidden region, away from the predicted pair-production lines. This finding indicates that either the corona in these NS systems is not pair-dominated, possibly due to the additional cooling from NS photons, or the corona is composed of both thermal and non-thermal electrons.

Reference Signal-Based Waveform Design for Integrated Sensing and Communications System

Integrated sensing and communications (ISAC) as one of the key technologies is capable of supporting high-speed communication and high-precision sensing for the upcoming 6G. This paper studies a waveform strategy by designing the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM)-based reference signal (RS) for sensing and communication in ISAC system. We derive the closed-form expressions of Cram\'er-Rao Bound (CRB) for the distance and velocity estimations, and obtain the communication rate under the mean square error of channel estimation. Then, a weighted sum CRB minimization problem on the distance and velocity estimations is formulated by considering communication rate requirement and RS intervals constraints, which is a mixed-integer problem due to the discrete RS interval values. To solve this problem, some numerical methods are typically adopted to obtain the optimal solutions, whose computational complexity grow exponentially with the number of symbols and subcarriers of OFDM. Therefore, we propose a relaxation and approximation method to transform the original discrete problem into a continuous convex one and obtain the sub-optimal solutions. Finally, our proposed scheme is compared with the exhaustive search method in numerical simulations, which show slight gap between the obtained sub-optimal and optimal solutions, and this gap further decreases with large weight factor.

Investigation into the origin of the soft excess in Ark 564 using principal component analysis

We combined a principal component analysis (PCA) and spectroscopy to investigate the origin of the soft excess in narrow-line Seyfert 1 galaxy Ark 564 with XMM-Newton observations over a period of ten years. We find that the principal components in different epochs are very similar, suggesting stable variability patterns in this source. More importantly, although its spectra could be equally well fitted by the two soft excess models, simulations show that the principal components from the relativistically smeared reflection model match the data well. At the same time, the principal components from the warm corona model show significant inconsistency. This finding indicates that the soft excess in Ark 564 originates from the relativistically smeared reflection, rather than the Comptonization in the warm corona, thereby favoring the reflection origin or the "hybrid" origin of the soft excess. Furthermore, the presence of the narrow absorption features in the spectra suggests that the soft excess is unlikely to originate from absorptions due to possible outflowing winds. Our results indicate that the PCA coupled with spectral analysis is a promising approach to exploring the origin of the soft excess in active galactic nuclei (AGNs).

Insight-HXMT observations of thermonuclear X-ray bursts in 4U 1636-53

We conducted an analysis of 45 bursts observed from 4U 1636$-$53. To investigate the mechanism behind the light curve profiles and the impact of thermonuclear X-ray bursts on the accretion environment in accreting neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries. This analysis employed both light curve and time-resolved spectroscopy methodologies, with data collected by the \textit{Insight}-HXMT instrument. We found that 30 bursts exhibited similar light curve profiles and were predominantly in the hard state, and two photospheric radius expansion (PRE) bursts were in the soft state. The light curves of most bursts did not follow a single exponential decay but displayed a dual-exponential behavior. The initial exponent had a duration of approximately 6 s. We utilized both the standard method and the `$f_{\rm a}$' method to fit the burst spectra. The majority of the `$f_{\rm a}$' values exceeded 1, indicating an enhancement of the persistent emission during the burst. Under the two comptonization components assumption, we suggest that the scattering of burst photons by the inner corona may mainly contribute to the persistent emission enhancement. We also observed an inverse correlation between the maximum $f_{\rm a}$ and the persistent emission flux in the non-PRE burst. This anti-correlation suggests that when the accretion rate is lower, there is a greater enhancement of persistent emission during the burst peak. The prediction based on Poynting-Robertson drag (P-R drag) aligns with this observed anti-correlation.

Investigation into the reflection properties of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636-53

We present the spectroscopy of the neutron star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636-53 using six simultaneous XMM-Newton and Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations. We applied different self-consistent reflection models to explore the features when the disk is illuminated by either the corona or the neutron star surface. We found that the spectra could be well fitted by these two types of models, with the derived emissivity index below a typical value of 3. The relative low emissivity can be explained if the neutron star and the corona, working together as an extended illuminator, simultaneously illuminate and ionize the disk. Additionally, the derived ionization parameter in the lamppost geometry is larger than the theoretical prediction. This inconsistency likely suggests that the corona does not emit isotropically in a realistic context. Furthermore, we also found that there is a possible trend between the height of the corona and the normalization of the disk emission. This could be understood either as a variation in the reflected radiation pressure or in the context of a jet base. Finally, we found that the disk is less ionized if it is illuminated by the neutron star, indicating that the illuminating source has significant influence on the physical properties of the disk.

The origin of UV/optical emission in the black hole low-mass X-ray binary Swift J1753.5-0127

The emission from the accreting black holes (BHs) in low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) covers a broad energy band from radio to X-rays. Studying the correlations between emission in different energy bands during outbursts can provide valuable information about the accretion process. We analyse the simultaneous optical, ultraviolet (UV) and X-ray data of the BH-LMXB Swift J1753.5-0127 during its $\sim$ 12-year long outburst with the {\it Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory}. We find that the UV/optical and X-ray emission are strongly correlated during the hard states of the outburst. We fit the relation with a power-law function $F_{UV/optical} \propto F_{X}^{\beta}$ and find that the power-law index $\beta$ increases from $\sim$ 0.24 to $\sim$ 0.33 as the UV/optical wavelength decreases from $\sim$ 5400 \r{A} (V) to $\sim$ 2030 \r{A} (UVW2). We explore the possible reasons for this and suggest that in Swift J1753.5-0127 the UV/optical emission is dominated by a viscously heated accretion disc at large radii. We find that the data that deviate from the correlation correspond to the low-intensity peaks appeared in the X-ray band during the outburst, and suggest that these deviations are driven by the emission from the inner part of the accretion disc.

The harmonic component of the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations in 4U 1636-53

We studied the harmonics of the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) in the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636-53 using the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations. We detected the harmonics of the mHz QPOs in 73 data intervals, with most of them in the transitional spectra state. We found that the ratio between the rms amplitude of the harmonic and that of the fundamental remains constant in a wide range of the fundamental frequency. More importantly, we studied, for the first time, the rms amplitude of the harmonics vs. energy in 4U 1636-53 in the 2-5 keV range. We found that the rms amplitude of both the harmonic and the fundamental shows a decreasing trend as the energy increases, which is different from the behaviors reported in QPOs in certain black hole systems. Furthermore, our results suggest that not all observations with mHz QPOs have the harmonic component, although the reason behind this is still unclear.

The study of multi-peaked type-I X-ray bursts in the neutron-star low mass X-ray binary 4U 1636$-$536 with RXTE

We have found and analysed 16 multi-peaked type-I bursts from the neutron-star low mass X-ray binary 4U 1636$-$53 with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). One of the bursts is a rare quadruple-peaked burst which was not previously reported. All 16 bursts show a multi-peaked structure not only in the X-ray light curves but also in the bolometric light curves. Most of the multi-peaked bursts appear in observations during the transition from the hard to the soft state in the colour-colour diagram. We find an anti-correlation between the second peak flux and the separation time between two peaks. We also find that in the double-peaked bursts the peak-flux ratio and the temperature of the thermal component in the pre-burst spectra are correlated. This indicates that the double-peaked structure in the light curve of the bursts may be affected by enhanced accretion rate in the disc, or increased temperature of the neutron star.

Correction to the Effective Refractive Index and the Confinement Factor in Waveguide Modeling for Quantum Cascade Lasers

The equations for the effective medium refractive index and for the confinement factor in the waveguide design for quantum cascade lasers are derived.Compared to equations used in prior literature, by applying rigorous perturbation theory and including the effect of the anisotropic optical gain and non-Hermitian properties of the waveguide structure and materials, a few percent correction should be made to the confinement factor and the effective gain. This result can easily be generalized to any optical devices with a layered structure.

XMM-Newton and NICER measurement of the rms spectrum of the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations in the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636-53

We used two XMM-Newton and six Neutron Star Interior Composition Explorer (NICER) observations to investigate the fractional rms amplitude of the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) in the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1636-53. We studied, for the first time, the fractional rms amplitude of the mHz QPOs vs. energy in 4U 1636-53 down to 0.2 keV. We find that, as the energy increases from 0.2 keV to 3 keV, the rms amplitude of the mHz QPOs increases, different from the decreasing trend that has been previously observed above 3 keV. This finding has not yet been predicted by any current theoretical model, however, it provides an important observational feature to speculate whether a newly discovered mHz oscillation originates from the marginally stable nuclear burning process on the neutron star surface.

Discovery of an accretion-rate independent absolute RMS amplitude of millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations in 4U 1636-53

We investigate the frequency and amplitude of the millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) in the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary (NS LMXB) 4U 1636-53 using Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observations. We find that no mHz QPOs appear when the source is in the hard spectral state. We also find that there is no significant correlation between the frequency and the fractional rms amplitude of the mHz QPOs. Notwithstanding, for the first time, we find that the absolute RMS amplitude of the mHz QPOs is insensitive to the parameter Sa, which measures the position of the source in the colour-colour diagram and is usually assumed to be an increasing function of mass accretion rate. This finding indicates that the transition from marginally stable burning to stable burning or unstable burning could happen very rapidly since, before the transition, the mHz QPOs do not gradually decay as the rate further changes.

Ionisation state of the accretion disc in the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1728-34

We analysed an XMM-Newton plus a simultaneous Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer observation and a separate Suzaku observation of the neutron-star low-mass X-ray binary 4U 1728-34. We fitted the X-ray spectra with the self-consistent reflection model relxill. We found that the inclination angle of 4U 1728-34 is 49 degrees, consistent with the upper limit of 60 degrees deduced from the absence of eclipses or dips in this source. The inclination angle in the fit of the XMM-Newton/RXTE observation is larger than 85 degrees, which may be due to the possible calibration issues of the PN instrument in timing mode. We also found that the thermal emission from the accretion disc is not significant. This could be explained either by the relatively high column density of the interstellar medium along the line of sight to the source, which decreases the number of soft disc photons, or if most of the soft thermal photons from the disc are reprocessed in the corona. The ionisation parameter derived from the fits is larger than the value predicted in the framework of the standard reflection model, wherein the disc is irradiated by an X-ray source above the compact object. This inconsistency suggests that irradiation from the neutron star and its boundary layer may play an important role in the ionisation of the accretion disc, and hence in the reflection component in this source.

Single-qubit quantum memory exceeding $10$-minute coherence time

A long-time quantum memory capable of storing and measuring quantum information at the single-qubit level is an essential ingredient for practical quantum computation and com-munication. Recently, there have been remarkable progresses of increasing coherence time for ensemble-based quantum memories of trapped ions, nuclear spins of ionized donors or nuclear spins in a solid. Until now, however, the record of coherence time of a single qubit is on the order of a few tens of seconds demonstrated in trapped ion systems. The qubit coherence time in a trapped ion is mainly limited by the increasing magnetic field fluctuation and the decreasing state-detection efficiency associated with the motional heating of the ion without laser cooling. Here we report the coherence time of a single qubit over $10$ minutes in the hyperfine states of a \Yb ion sympathetically cooled by a \Ba ion in the same Paul trap, which eliminates the heating of the qubit ion even at room temperature. To reach such coherence time, we apply a few thousands of dynamical decoupling pulses to suppress the field fluctuation noise. A long-time quantum memory demonstrated in this experiment makes an important step for construction of the memory zone in scalable quantum computer architectures or for ion-trap-based quantum networks. With further improvement of the coherence time by techniques such as magnetic field shielding and increase of the number of qubits in the quantum memory, our demonstration also makes a basis for other applications including quantum money.

Millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations in 4U 1636-53 associated with bursts with positive convexity only

We investigated the convexity of all type I X-ray bursts with millihertz quasi-periodic oscillations (mHz QPOs) in 4U 1636-53 using archival observations with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer. We found that, at a 3.5 $σ$ confidence level, in all 39 cases in which the mHz QPOs disappeared at the time of an X-ray burst, the convexity of the burst is positive. The convexity measures the shape of the rising part of the burst light curve and, according to recent models, it is related to the ignition site of bursts on the neutron star surface. This finding suggests that in 4U 1636-53 these 39 bursts and the marginally-stable nuclear burning process responsible for the mHz QPOs take place at the neutron-star equator. This scenario could explain the inconsistency between the high accretion rate required for triggering mHz QPOs in theoretical models and the relatively low accretion rate derived from observations.
