Minimal-norm solution to the Fredholm integral equations of the first kind via the H-HK formulation

The Fredholm integral equations of the first kind is a typical ill-posed problem, so that it is usually difficult to obtain its analytical minimal-norm solution. This paper gives a closed-form minimal-norm solution for the degenerate kernel equations based on the H-HK formulation. Furthermore, it has been shown that the structure of solutions to degenerate kernel equations and matrix equations are consistent. Subsequently, the obtained results are extended to non-degenerate integral equations. Finally, the validity and applicability of the proposed method are demonstrated by some examples.

Empowering Working Memory for Large Language Model Agents

Large language models (LLMs) have achieved impressive linguistic capabilities. However, a key limitation persists in their lack of human-like memory faculties. LLMs exhibit constrained memory retention across sequential interactions, hindering complex reasoning. This paper explores the potential of applying cognitive psychology's working memory frameworks, to enhance LLM architecture. The limitations of traditional LLM memory designs are analyzed, including their isolation of distinct dialog episodes and lack of persistent memory links. To address this, an innovative model is proposed incorporating a centralized Working Memory Hub and Episodic Buffer access to retain memories across episodes. This architecture aims to provide greater continuity for nuanced contextual reasoning during intricate tasks and collaborative scenarios. While promising, further research is required into optimizing episodic memory encoding, storage, prioritization, retrieval, and security. Overall, this paper provides a strategic blueprint for developing LLM agents with more sophisticated, human-like memory capabilities, highlighting memory mechanisms as a vital frontier in artificial general intelligence.

MGL2Rank: Learning to Rank the Importance of Nodes in Road Networks Based on Multi-Graph Fusion

The identification of important nodes with strong propagation capabilities in road networks is a vital topic in urban planning. Existing methods for evaluating the importance of nodes in traffic networks only consider topological information and traffic volumes, the diversity of the traffic characteristics in road networks, such as the number of lanes and average speed of road segments, is ignored, thus limiting their performance. To solve this problem, we propose a graph learning-based framework (MGL2Rank) that integrates the rich characteristics of road networks to rank the importance of nodes. This framework comprises an embedding module containing a sampling algorithm (MGWalk) and an encoder network to learn the latent representations for each road segment. MGWalk utilizes multigraph fusion to capture the topology of road networks and establish associations between road segments based on their attributes. The obtained node representation is then used to learn the importance ranking of the road segments. Finally, a synthetic dataset is constructed for ranking tasks based on the regional road network of Shenyang City, and the ranking results on this dataset demonstrate the effectiveness of our method. The data and source code for MGL2Rank are available at https://github.com/iCityLab/MGL2Rank.

This paper presents a novel method for parsing and vectorizing semi-structured data to enhance the functionality of Retrieval-Augmented Generation (RAG) within Large Language Models (LLMs). We developed a comprehensive pipeline for converting various data formats into .docx, enabling efficient parsing and structured data extraction. The core of our methodology involves the construction of a vector database using Pinecone, which integrates seamlessly with LLMs to provide accurate, context-specific responses, particularly in environmental management and wastewater treatment operations. Through rigorous testing with both English and Chinese texts in diverse document formats, our results demonstrate a marked improvement in the precision and reliability of LLMs outputs. The RAG-enhanced models displayed enhanced ability to generate contextually rich and technically accurate responses, underscoring the potential of vector knowledge bases in significantly boosting the performance of LLMs in specialized domains. This research not only illustrates the effectiveness of our method but also highlights its potential to revolutionize data processing and analysis in environmental sciences, setting a precedent for future advancements in AI-driven applications. Metric operator and geodesic orbit property for a standard homogeneous Finsler metric

In this paper, we introduce the metric operator for a compact homogeneous Finsler space, and use it to investigate the geodesic orbit property. We define the notion of standard homogeneous $(α_1,\cdots,α_s)$-metric which generalizes the notion of standard homogeneous $(α_1,α_2)$-metric. We classify all connected simply connected homogeneous manifold $G/H$ with a compact connected simple Lie group $G$ and two irreducible summands in its isotropy representation, such that there exists a standard homogeneous $(α_1,α_2)$-metric which is g.o. but not naturally reductive on $G/H$. We also prove that on a generalized Wallach space which is not a product of three symmetric spaces, any standard homogeneous $(α_1,α_2,α_3)$-metric $F$ with respect to the canonical decomposition is g.o. on $G/H$ if and only if $F$ is a normal homogeneous Riemannian metric.

Temporally Consistent Unbalanced Optimal Transport for Unsupervised Action Segmentation

We propose a novel approach to the action segmentation task for long, untrimmed videos, based on solving an optimal transport problem. By encoding a temporal consistency prior into a Gromov-Wasserstein problem, we are able to decode a temporally consistent segmentation from a noisy affinity/matching cost matrix between video frames and action classes. Unlike previous approaches, our method does not require knowing the action order for a video to attain temporal consistency. Furthermore, our resulting (fused) Gromov-Wasserstein problem can be efficiently solved on GPUs using a few iterations of projected mirror descent. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in an unsupervised learning setting, where our method is used to generate pseudo-labels for self-training. We evaluate our segmentation approach and unsupervised learning pipeline on the Breakfast, 50-Salads, YouTube Instructions and Desktop Assembly datasets, yielding state-of-the-art results for the unsupervised video action segmentation task.

Geodesic orbit and weak symmetric spray manifolds

In this paper, we introduce the geodesic orbit and weakly symmetric properties in homogeneous spray geometry. When a homogeneous spray manifold is endowed with a reductive decomposition, we can use the spray vector field to describe these properties, and prove that a weakly symmetric spray manifold must be geodesic orbit, which generalizes its analog in homogeneous Riemannian and Finsler geometries.

Study of the mechanism of electroacupuncture regulating ferroptosis, inhibiting bladder neck fibrosis, and improving bladder urination function after suprasacral spinal cord injury using proteomics

Purpose The aim of this study was to explore whether electroacupuncture regulates phenotypic transformation of smooth muscle cells by inhibiting ferroptosis and inhibiting fibrosis, thereby improving bladder urination function after suprasacral spinal cord injury (SSCI). Methods The experiment was divided into sham, model, and electroacupuncture group. After 10 days of electroacupuncture intervention, urodynamic examination was performed, and bladder neck was taken for HE staining, tandem mass tag (TMT)-based quantitative proteomics analysis, Western blot(WB) detection, ferrous ion concentration detection and Masson staining. Conclusion Electroacupuncture may prevent the phenotype of bladder neck smooth muscle cells from transforming from contraction type to synthesis type by inhibiting ferroptosis, inhibit bladder neck fibrosis, improve bladder neck compliance, and thus improve bladder urination function after SSCI.

Deep Attentive Features for Prostate Segmentation in 3D Transrectal Ultrasound

Automatic prostate segmentation in transrectal ultrasound (TRUS) images is of essential importance for image-guided prostate interventions and treatment planning. However, developing such automatic solutions remains very challenging due to the missing/ambiguous boundary and inhomogeneous intensity distribution of the prostate in TRUS, as well as the large variability in prostate shapes. This paper develops a novel 3D deep neural network equipped with attention modules for better prostate segmentation in TRUS by fully exploiting the complementary information encoded in different layers of the convolutional neural network (CNN). Our attention module utilizes the attention mechanism to selectively leverage the multilevel features integrated from different layers to refine the features at each individual layer, suppressing the non-prostate noise at shallow layers of the CNN and increasing more prostate details into features at deep layers. Experimental results on challenging 3D TRUS volumes show that our method attains satisfactory segmentation performance. The proposed attention mechanism is a general strategy to aggregate multi-level deep features and has the potential to be used for other medical image segmentation tasks. Algorithmic Analysis of Termination Problems for Nondeterministic Quantum Programs

We consider the two categories of termination problems of quantum programs with nondeterminism: 1) Is an input of a program terminating with probability one under all schedulers? If not, how can a scheduler be synthesized to evidence the nontermination? 2) Are all inputs terminating with probability one under their respective schedulers? If yes, a further question asks whether there is a scheduler that forces all inputs to be terminating with probability one together with how to synthesize it; otherwise, how can an input be provided to refute the universal termination? For the effective verification of the first category, we over-approximate the reachable set of quantum program states by the reachable subspace, whose algebraic structure is a linear space. On the other hand, we study the set of divergent states from which the program terminates with probability zero under some scheduler. The divergent set has an explicit algebraic structure. Exploiting them, we address the decision problem by a necessary and sufficient condition, i.e. the disjointness of the reachable subspace and the divergent set. Furthermore, the scheduler synthesis is completed in exponential time. For the second category, we reduce the decision problem to the existence of invariant subspace, from which the program terminates with probability zero under all schedulers. The invariant subspace is characterized by linear equations. The states on that invariant subspace are evidence of the nontermination. Furthermore, the scheduler synthesis is completed by seeking a pattern of finite schedulers that forces all inputs to be terminating with positive probability. The repetition of that pattern yields the desired universal scheduler that forces all inputs to be terminating with probability one. All the problems in the second category are shown to be solved in polynomial time.

Towards Optimal Feature-Shaping Methods for Out-of-Distribution Detection

Feature shaping refers to a family of methods that exhibit state-of-the-art performance for out-of-distribution (OOD) detection. These approaches manipulate the feature representation, typically from the penultimate layer of a pre-trained deep learning model, so as to better differentiate between in-distribution (ID) and OOD samples. However, existing feature-shaping methods usually employ rules manually designed for specific model architectures and OOD datasets, which consequently limit their generalization ability. To address this gap, we first formulate an abstract optimization framework for studying feature-shaping methods. We then propose a concrete reduction of the framework with a simple piecewise constant shaping function and show that existing feature-shaping methods approximate the optimal solution to the concrete optimization problem. Further, assuming that OOD data is inaccessible, we propose a formulation that yields a closed-form solution for the piecewise constant shaping function, utilizing solely the ID data. Through extensive experiments, we show that the feature-shaping function optimized by our method improves the generalization ability of OOD detection across a large variety of datasets and model architectures.

Deep Unfolding Convolutional Dictionary Model for Multi-Contrast MRI Super-resolution and Reconstruction

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) tasks often involve multiple contrasts. Recently, numerous deep learning-based multi-contrast MRI super-resolution (SR) and reconstruction methods have been proposed to explore the complementary information from the multi-contrast images. However, these methods either construct parameter-sharing networks or manually design fusion rules, failing to accurately model the correlations between multi-contrast images and lacking certain interpretations. In this paper, we propose a multi-contrast convolutional dictionary (MC-CDic) model under the guidance of the optimization algorithm with a well-designed data fidelity term. Specifically, we bulid an observation model for the multi-contrast MR images to explicitly model the multi-contrast images as common features and unique features. In this way, only the useful information in the reference image can be transferred to the target image, while the inconsistent information will be ignored. We employ the proximal gradient algorithm to optimize the model and unroll the iterative steps into a deep CDic model. Especially, the proximal operators are replaced by learnable ResNet. In addition, multi-scale dictionaries are introduced to further improve the model performance. We test our MC-CDic model on multi-contrast MRI SR and reconstruction tasks. Experimental results demonstrate the superior performance of the proposed MC-CDic model against existing SOTA methods. Code is available at https://github.com/lpcccc-cv/MC-CDic.

Global Feature Pyramid Network

The visual feature pyramid has proven its effectiveness and efficiency in target detection tasks. Yet, current methodologies tend to overly emphasize inter-layer feature interaction, neglecting the crucial aspect of intra-layer feature adjustment. Experience underscores the significant advantages of intra-layer feature interaction in enhancing target detection tasks. While some approaches endeavor to learn condensed intra-layer feature representations using attention mechanisms or visual transformers, they overlook the incorporation of global information interaction. This oversight results in increased false detections and missed targets. To address this critical issue, this paper introduces the Global Feature Pyramid Network (GFPNet), an augmented version of PAFPN that integrates global information for enhanced target detection. Specifically, we leverage a lightweight MLP to capture global feature information, utilize the VNC encoder to process these features, and employ a parallel learnable mechanism to extract intra-layer features from the input image. Building on this foundation, we retain the PAFPN method to facilitate inter-layer feature interaction, extracting rich feature details across various levels.Compared to conventional feature pyramids, GFPN not only effectively focuses on inter-layer feature information but also captures global feature details, fostering intra-layer feature interaction and generating a more comprehensive and impactful feature representation. GFPN consistently demonstrates performance improvements over object detection baselines.

A clean-label graph backdoor attack method in node classification task

Backdoor attacks in the traditional graph neural networks (GNNs) field are easily detectable due to the dilemma of confusing labels. To explore the backdoor vulnerability of GNNs and create a more stealthy backdoor attack method, a clean-label graph backdoor attack method(CGBA) in the node classification task is proposed in this paper. Differently from existing backdoor attack methods, CGBA requires neither modification of node labels nor graph structure. Specifically, to solve the problem of inconsistency between the contents and labels of the samples, CGBA selects poisoning samples in a specific target class and uses the label of sample as the target label (i.e., clean-label) after injecting triggers into the target samples. To guarantee the similarity of neighboring nodes, the raw features of the nodes are elaborately picked as triggers to further improve the concealment of the triggers. Extensive experiments results show the effectiveness of our method. When the poisoning rate is 0.04, CGBA can achieve an average attack success rate of 87.8%, 98.9%, 89.1%, and 98.5%, respectively.

Revisiting Implicit Differentiation for Learning Problems in Optimal Control

This paper proposes a new method for differentiating through optimal trajectories arising from non-convex, constrained discrete-time optimal control (COC) problems using the implicit function theorem (IFT). Previous works solve a differential Karush-Kuhn-Tucker (KKT) system for the trajectory derivative, and achieve this efficiently by solving an auxiliary Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) problem. In contrast, we directly evaluate the matrix equations which arise from applying variable elimination on the Lagrange multiplier terms in the (differential) KKT system. By appropriately accounting for the structure of the terms within the resulting equations, we show that the trajectory derivatives scale linearly with the number of timesteps. Furthermore, our approach allows for easy parallelization, significantly improved scalability with model size, direct computation of vector-Jacobian products and improved numerical stability compared to prior works. As an additional contribution, we unify prior works, addressing claims that computing trajectory derivatives using IFT scales quadratically with the number of timesteps. We evaluate our method on a both synthetic benchmark and four challenging, learning from demonstration benchmarks including a 6-DoF maneuvering quadrotor and 6-DoF rocket powered landing.

A Sample-Driven Solving Procedure for the Repeated Reachability of Quantum CTMCs

Reachability analysis plays a central role in system design and verification. The reachability problem, denoted $\Diamond^J\,Φ$, asks whether the system will meet the property $Φ$ after some time in a given time interval $J$. Recently, it has been considered on a novel kind of real-time systems -- quantum continuous-time Markov chains (QCTMCs), and embedded into the model-checking algorithm. In this paper, we further study the repeated reachability problem in QCTMCs, denoted $\Box^I\,\Diamond^J\,Φ$, which concerns whether the system starting from each \emph{absolute} time in $I$ will meet the property $Φ$ after some coming \emph{relative} time in $J$. First of all, we reduce it to the real root isolation of a class of real-valued functions (exponential polynomials), whose solvability is conditional to Schanuel's conjecture being true. To speed up the procedure, we employ the strategy of sampling. The original problem is shown to be equivalent to the existence of a finite collection of satisfying samples. We then present a sample-driven procedure, which can effectively refine the sample space after each time of sampling, no matter whether the sample itself is successful or conflicting. The improvement on efficiency is validated by randomly generated instances. Hence the proposed method would be promising to attack the repeated reachability problems together with checking other $ω$-regular properties in a wide scope of real-time systems.
