Spectral Evidence for Unidirectional Charge Density Wave in Detwinned BaNi$_2$As$_2$

The emergence of unconventional superconductivity in proximity to intertwined electronic orders is especially relevant in the case of iron-based superconductors. Such order consists of an electronic nematic order and a spin density wave in these systems. BaNi$_2$As$_2$, like its well-known iron-based analog BaFe$_2$As$_2$, also hosts a symmetry-breaking structural transition that is coupled to a unidirectional charge density wave (CDW), providing a novel platform to study intertwined orders. Here, through a systematic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy study combined with a detwinning $B_1g$ uniaxial strain, we identify distinct spectral evidence of band evolution due to the structural transition as well as CDW-induced band folding. In contrast to the nematicity and spin density wave in BaFe$_2$As$_2$, the structural and CDW order parameters in BaNi$_2$As$_2$ are observed to be strongly coupled and do not separate in the presence of uniaxial strain. Our measurements point to a likely lattice origin of the CDW in BaNi$_2$As$_2$.

Single crystal growth and superconductivity in RbNi$_2$Se$_2$

We report the synthesis and characterization of RbNi$_2$Se$_2$, an analog of the iron chalcogenide superconductor Rb$_x$Fe$_2$Se$_2$, via transport, angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and density functional theory calculations. A superconducting transition at $T_{c}$ = 1.20 K is identified. In normal state, RbNi$_2$Se$_2$ shows paramagnetic and Fermi liquid behaviors. A large Sommerfeld coefficient yields a heavy effective electron mass of $m^{*}\approx6m_{e}$. In the superconducting state, zero-field electronic specific-heat data $C_{es}$ can be described by a two-gap BCS model, indicating that RbNi$_2$Se$_2$ is a multi-gap superconductor. Our density functional theory calculations and angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements demonstrate that RbNi$_2$Se$_2$ exhibits relatively weak correlations and multi-band characteristics, consistent with the multi-gap superconductivity.

Multi-task Pre-training Language Model for Semantic Network Completion

Semantic networks, such as the knowledge graph, can represent the knowledge leveraging the graph structure. Although the knowledge graph shows promising values in natural language processing, it suffers from incompleteness. This paper focuses on knowledge graph completion by predicting linkage between entities, which is a fundamental yet critical task. Semantic matching is a potential solution as it can deal with unseen entities, which the translational distance based methods struggle with. However, to achieve competitive performance as translational distance based methods, semantic matching based methods require large-scale datasets for the training purpose, which are typically unavailable in practical settings. Therefore, we employ the language model and introduce a novel knowledge graph architecture named LP-BERT, which contains two main stages: multi-task pre-training and knowledge graph fine-tuning. In the pre-training phase, three tasks are taken to drive the model to learn the relationship from triples by predicting either entities or relations. While in the fine-tuning phase, inspired by contrastive learning, we design a triple-style negative sampling in a batch, which greatly increases the proportion of negative sampling while keeping the training time almost unchanged. Furthermore, we propose a new data augmentation method utilizing the inverse relationship of triples to improve the performance and robustness of the model. To demonstrate the effectiveness of our method, we conduct extensive experiments on three widely-used datasets, WN18RR, FB15k-237, and UMLS. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of our methods, and our approach achieves state-of-the-art results on WN18RR and FB15k-237 datasets. Significantly, Hits@10 indicator is improved by 5% from previous state-of-the-art result on the WN18RR dataset while reaching 100% on the UMLS dataset.

Nematic fluctuations in the non-superconducting iron pnictide BaFe$_{1.9-x}$Ni$_{0.1}$Cr$_{x}$As$_{2}$

The main driven force of the electronic nematic phase in iron-based superconductors is still under debate. Here, we report a comprehensive study on the nematic fluctuations in a non-superconducting iron pnictide system BaFe$_{1.9-x}$Ni$_{0.1}$Cr$_{x}$As$_{2}$ by electronic transport, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. Previous neutron diffraction and transport measurements suggested that the collinear antiferromagnetism persists to $x=0.8$, with similar Néel temperature $T_N$ and structural transition temperature $T_s$ around 32 K, but the charge carriers change from electron type to hole type around $x=$ 0.5. In this study, we have found that the in-plane resistivity anisotropy also highly depends on the Cr dopings and the type of charge carriers. While ARPES measurements suggest possibly weak orbital anisotropy onset near $T_s$ for both $x=0.05$ and $x=0.5$ compounds, INS experiments reveal clearly different onset temperatures of low-energy spin excitation anisotropy, which is likely related to the energy scale of spin nematicity. These results suggest that the interplay between the local spins on Fe atoms and the itinerant electrons on Fermi surfaces is crucial to the nematic fluctuations of iron pnictides, where the orbital degree of freedom may behave differently from the spin degree of freedom, and the transport properties are intimately related to the spin dynamics.

AMS_ADRN at SemEval-2022 Task 5: A Suitable Image-text Multimodal Joint Modeling Method for Multi-task Misogyny Identification

Women are influential online, especially in image-based social media such as Twitter and Instagram. However, many in the network environment contain gender discrimination and aggressive information, which magnify gender stereotypes and gender inequality. Therefore, the filtering of illegal content such as gender discrimination is essential to maintain a healthy social network environment. In this paper, we describe the system developed by our team for SemEval-2022 Task 5: Multimedia Automatic Misogyny Identification. More specifically, we introduce two novel system to analyze these posts: a multimodal multi-task learning architecture that combines Bertweet for text encoding with ResNet-18 for image representation, and a single-flow transformer structure which combines text embeddings from BERT-Embeddings and image embeddings from several different modules such as EfficientNet and ResNet. In this manner, we show that the information behind them can be properly revealed. Our approach achieves good performance on each of the two subtasks of the current competition, ranking 15th for Subtask A (0.746 macro F1-score), 11th for Subtask B (0.706 macro F1-score) while exceeding the official baseline results by high margins.

Complex structure due to As bonding and interplay with electronic structure in superconducting BaNi2As2

BaNi2As2 is a superconductor chemically related to the Fe-based superconductors, with a complex and poorly understood structural phase transition. We show based on first principles calculations that in fact there are two distinct competing structures. These structures are very different from electronic, transport and bonding points of view but are close in energy. These arise due to complex As bonding patterns and drive distortions of the Ni layers. This is supported by photoemission experiments. This leads to an interplay of electronic and structural behavior including induced anisotropic of the electronic transport. The competition between these distortions is associated with the complex behavior observed in BaNi2As2 samples.

Nonsymmorphic Symmetry-Protected Band Crossings in a Square-Net Metal PtPb$_4$

Topological semimetals with symmetry-protected band crossings have emerged as a rich landscape to explore intriguing electronic phenomena. Nonsymmorphic symmetries in particular have been shown to play an important role in protecting the crossings along a line (rather than a point) in momentum space. Here we report experimental and theoretical evidence for Dirac nodal line crossings along the Brillouin zone boundaries in PtPb$_4$, arising from the nonsymmorphic symmetry of its crystal structure. Interestingly, while the nodal lines would remain gapless in the absence of spin-orbit coupling (SOC), the SOC in this case plays a detrimental role to topology by lifting the band degeneracy everywhere except at a set of isolated points. Nevertheless, the nodal line is observed to have a bandwidth much smaller than that found in density functional theory (DFT). Our findings reveal PtPb$_4$ to be a material system with narrow crossings approximately protected by non-symmorhpic crystalline symmetries.

Discovery of charge density wave in a correlated kagome lattice antiferromagnet

A hallmark of strongly correlated quantum materials is the rich phase diagram resulting from competing and intertwined phases with nearly degenerate ground state energies. A well-known example is the copper oxides, where a charge density wave (CDW) is ordered well above and strongly coupled to the magnetic order to form spin-charge separated stripes that compete with superconductivity. Recently, such rich phase diagrams have also been revealed in correlated topological materials. In two-dimensional kagome lattice metals consisting of corner-sharing triangles, the geometry of the lattice can produce flat bands with localized electrons, non-trivial topology, chiral magnetic order, superconductivity and CDW order. While CDW has been found in weakly electron correlated nonmagnetic AV3Sb5 (A = K, Rb, Cs), it has not yet been observed in correlated magnetic ordered kagome lattice metals. Here we report the discovery of CDW within the antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordered phase of kagome lattice FeGe. The CDW in FeGe occurs at wavevectors identical to that of AV3Sb5, enhances the AFM ordered moment, and induces an emergent anomalous Hall effect. Our findings suggest that CDW in FeGe arises from the combination of electron correlations-driven AFM order and van Hove singularities-driven instability possibly associated with a chiral flux phase, in stark contrast to strongly correlated copper oxides and nickelates, where the CDW precedes or accompanies the magnetic order.

Transport anomalies in the layered compound BaPt4Se6

We report a layered ternary selenide BaPt4Se6 featuring sesqui-selenide Pt2Se3 layers sandwiched by Ba atoms. The Pt2Se3 layers in this compound can be derived from the Dirac-semimetal PtSe2 phase with Se vacancies that form a honeycomb structure. This structure results in a Pt (VI) and Pt (II) mixed-valence compound with both PtSe6 octahedra and PtSe4 square net coordination configurations. Temperature dependent electrical transport measurements suggest two distinct anomalies: a resistivity crossover, mimic to the metal-insulator (M-I) transition at ~150K, and a resistivity plateau at temperatures below 10K. The resistivity crossover is not associated with any structural, magnetic or charge order modulated phase transitions. Magnetoresistivity, Hall and heat capacity measurements concurrently suggest an existing hidden state below 5K in this system. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements reveal a metallic state and no dramatic reconstruction of the electronic structure up to 200K.

Room-Temperature Topological Phase Transition in Quasi-One-Dimensional Material Bi$_4$I$_4$

Quasi-one-dimensional (1D) materials provide a superior platform for characterizing and tuning topological phases for two reasons: i) existence for multiple cleavable surfaces that enables better experimental identification of topological classification, and ii) stronger response to perturbations such as strain for tuning topological phases compared to higher dimensional crystal structures. In this paper, we present experimental evidence for a room-temperature topological phase transition in the quasi-1D material Bi$_4$I$_4$, mediated via a first order structural transition between two distinct stacking orders of the weakly-coupled chains. Using high resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy on the two natural cleavable surfaces, we identify the high temperature $β$ phase to be the first weak topological insulator with gapless Dirac cones on the (100) surface and no Dirac crossing on the (001) surface, while in the low temperature $α$ phase, the topological surface state on the (100) surface opens a gap, consistent with a recent theoretical prediction of a higher-order topological insulator beyond the scope of the established topological materials databases that hosts gapless hinge states. Our results not only identify a rare topological phase transition between first-order and second-order topological insulators but also establish a novel quasi-1D material platform for exploring unprecedented physics.

Flatband-Induced Itinerant Ferromagnetism in RbCo$_2$Se$_2$

$A$Co$_2$Se$_2$ ($A$=K,Rb,Cs) is a homologue of the iron-based superconductor, $A$Fe$_2$Se$_2$. From a comprehensive study of RbCo$_2$Se$_2$ via measurements of magnetization, transport, neutron diffraction, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, and first-principle calculations, we identify a ferromagnetic order accompanied by an orbital-dependent spin-splitting of the electronic dispersions. Furthermore, we identify the ordered moment to be dominated by a $d_{x^2-y^2}$ flatband near the Fermi level, which exhibits the largest spin splitting across the ferromagnetic transition, suggesting an itinerant origin of the ferromagnetism. In the broader context of the iron-based superconductors, we find this $d_{x^2-y^2}$ flatband to be a common feature in the band structures of both iron-chalcogenides and iron-pnictides, accessible via heavy electron doping.

Non-Thermal Emergence of an Orbital-Selective Mott Phase in FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$

Electronic correlation is of fundamental importance to high temperature superconductivity. Iron-based superconductors are believed to possess moderate correlation strength, which combined with their multi-orbital nature makes them a fascinating platform for the emergence of exotic phenomena. A particularly striking form is the emergence of an orbital selective Mott phase, where the localization of a subset of orbitals leads to a drastically reconstructed Fermi surface. Here, we report spectroscopic evidence of the reorganization of the Fermi surface from FeSe to FeTe as Se is substituted by Te. We uncover a particularly transparent way to visualize the localization of the $d_{xy}$ electron orbital through the suppression of its hybridization with the more coherent $d$ electron orbitals, which leads to a redistribution of the orbital-dependent spectral weight near the Fermi level. These noteworthy features of the Fermi surface are accompanied by a divergent behavior of a band renormalization in the $d_{xy}$ orbital. All of our observations are further supported by our theoretical calculations to be salient spectroscopic signatures of such a non-thermal evolution from a strongly correlated metallic phase towards an orbital-selective Mott phase in FeTe$_{1-x}$Se$_x$ as Se concentration is reduced.

Short-range nematic fluctuations in Sr1-xNaxFe2As2 superconductors

Interactions between nematic fluctuations, magnetic order and superconductivity are central to the physics of iron-based superconductors. Here we report on in-plane transverse acoustic phonons in hole-doped Sr$_{1-x}$Na$_x$Fe$_2$As$_2$ measured via inelastic X-ray scattering, and extract both the nematic susceptibility and the nematic correlation length. By a self-contained method of analysis, for the underdoped ($x=0.36$) sample, which harbors a magnetically-ordered tetragonal phase, we find it hosts a short nematic correlation length $ξ$ ~ 10 $Å$ and a large nematic susceptibility $χ_{\rm nem}$. The optimal-doped ($x=0.55$) sample exhibits weaker phonon softening effects, indicative of both reduced $ξ$ and $χ_{\rm nem}$. Our results suggest short-range nematic fluctuations may favor superconductivity, placing emphasis on the nematic correlation length for understanding the iron-based superconductors.

Orbital-selective spin waves in detwinned NaFeAs

The existence of orbital-dependent electronic correlations has been recognized as an essential ingredient to describe the physics of iron-based superconductors. NaFeAs, a parent compound of iron based superconductors, exhibits a tetragonal-to-orthorhombic lattice distortion below $T_s\approx 60$ K, forming an electronic nematic phase with two 90$^\circ$ rotated (twinned) domains, and orders antiferromagnetically below $T_N\approx 42$ K. We use inelastic neutron scattering to study spin waves in uniaxial pressure-detwinned NaFeAs. By comparing the data with combined density functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory calculations, we conclude that spin waves up to an energy scale of $E_\text{crossover} \approx 100$ meV are dominated by $d_{yz}$-$d_{yz}$ intra-orbital scattering processes, which have the two-fold ($C_2$) rotational symmetry of the underlying lattice. On the other hand, the spin wave excitations above $E_\text{crossover}$, which have approximately fourfold ($C_4$) rotational symmetry, arise from the $d_{xy}$-$d_{xy}$ intra-orbital scattering that controls the overall magnetic bandwidth in this material. In addition, we find that the low-energy ($E\approx 6$ meV) spin excitations change from approximate $C_4$ to $C_2$ rotational symmetry below a temperature $T^\ast$ ($>T_s$), while spin excitations at energies above $E_\text{crossover}$ have approximate $C_4$ rotational symmetry and are weakly temperature dependent. These results are consistent with angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements, where the presence of an uniaxial strain necessary to detwin NaFeAs also raises the onset temperature $T^\ast$ of observable orbital-dependent band splitting to above $T_s$, thus supporting the notion of orbital selective spin waves in the nematic phase of iron-based superconductors.

Ergodicity recovery of random walk in heterogeneous disordered media

Significant and persistent trajectory-to-trajectory variance are commonly observed in the particle tracking experiments, which have become a major challenge for the experiment data analysis. In this theoretical paper, we investigate the ergodicity recovery behavior, which helps to clarify the origin and the convergence of trajectory-to-trajectory fluctuation in various heterogeneous disordered media. The concepts of self-averaging and ergodicity are revisited in the context of trajectory analysis. The slow ergodicity recovery and the non-Gaussian diffusion in the annealed disordered media are shown as the consequences of the central limit theorem in different situations. The strange ergodicity recovery behavior is reported in the quenched disordered case, which arises from a localization mechanism. The first-passage approach is introduced to the ergodicity analysis for this case, of which the central limit theorem can be employed and the ergodicity is recovered in the length scale of diffusivity correlation.

Quenched trap model on the extreme landscape: the rise of sub-diffusion and non-Gaussian diffusion

Non-Gaussian diffusion has been intensively studied in recent years, which reflects the dynamic heterogeneity in the disordered media. The recent study on the non-Gaussian diffusion in a static disordered landscape suggests novel phenomena due to the quenched disorder. In this work, we further investigate the random walk in this landscape under various effective temperature $μ$, which continuously modulates the dynamic heterogeneity. We show in the long time limit, the trap dynamics on the landscape is equivalent to the quenched trap model, in which sub-diffusion appears for $μ<1$. The non-Gaussian distribution of displacement has been analytically estimated for short $t$, of which the stretched exponential tail is expected for $μ\neq1$. Due to the localization in the ensemble of trajectory segments, an additional peak arises in $P(x,t)$ around $x=0$ even for $μ>1$. Evolving in different time scales, the peak and the tail of $P(x,t)$ are well split for a wide range of $t$. This theoretical study reveals the connections among the sub-diffusion, non-Gaussian diffusion, and the dynamic heterogeneity in the static disordered medium. It also offers an insight on how the cell would benefit from the quasi-static disordered structures.

Structural, magnetic, and electronic evolution of the spin-ladder system BaFe$_2$S$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ with isoelectronic substitution

We report experimental studies of a series of BaFe$_2$S$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ ($0\leq x\leq3$) single crystals and powder specimens using x-ray diffraction, neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation, and electrical transport measurements. A structural transformation from Cmcm (BaFe$_2$S$_3$) to Pnma (BaFe$_2$Se$_3$) was identified around $x = 0.7\sim 1$. Neutron diffraction measurements on the samples with $x$ = 0.2, 0.4, and 0.7 reveal that the N$é$el temperature of the stripe antiferromagnetic order is gradually suppressed from $\sim$120 to 85 K, while the magnitude of the ordered Fe$^{2+}$ moments shows very little variation. Similarly, the block antiferromagnetic order in BaFe$_2$Se$_3$ remains robust for $1.5\leq x\leq3$ with negligible variation in the ordered moment and a slight decrease of the N$é$el temperature from 250 K ($x=3$) to 225 K ($x=1.5$). The sample with $x=1$ near the Cmcm and Pnma border shows coexisting, two-dimensional, short-range stripe- and block-type antiferromagnetic correlations. The system remains insulating for all $x$, but the thermal activation gap shows an abrupt increase when traversing the boundary from the Cmcm stripe phase to the Pnma block phase. The results demonstrate that the crystal structure, magnetic order, and electronic properties are strongly coupled in the BaFe$_2$S$_{3-x}$Se$_x$ system.

The Nematic Energy Scale and the Missing Electron Pocket in FeSe

Superconductivity emerges in proximity to a nematic phase in most iron-based superconductors. It is therefore important to understand the impact of nematicity on the electronic structure. Orbital assignment and tracking across the nematic phase transition prove to be challenging due to the multiband nature of iron-based superconductors and twinning effects. Here, we report a detailed study of the electronic structure of fully detwinned FeSe across the nematic phase transition using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We clearly observe a nematicity-driven band reconstruction involving dxz, dyz, and dxy orbitals. The nematic energy scale between dxz and dyz bands reaches a maximum of 50 meV at the Brillouin zone corner. We are also able to track the dxz electron pocket across the nematic transition and explain its absence in the nematic state. Our comprehensive data of the electronic structure provide an accurate basis for theoretical models of the superconducting pairing in FeSe.
