Estimating constraints on cosmological parameters via the canonical and the differential redshift drift with SKA HI 21-cm observations

Redshift drift effect, an observational probe that indenpendent of cosmological models, presents unique applications in specific cosmological epoch. By quantifying redshift drift signal , researchers can determine the rate of the Universe's accelerated expansion and impose constraints on cosmological models and parameters. This study evaluates the precision in cosmological parameters estimation derived from this signal via HI 21cm signal, that observed by the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope, with spectral resolutions of 0.001 Hz and 0.002 Hz over an observational period of $ΔT = 0.5$ year, utilizing two established techniques: the canonical redshift drift and the differential redshift drift method. The primary objective of this project is to ascertain the rate of cosmic acceleration and establish a solid foundation for real-time cosmology. The results reveal that both the two methods impose highly precise constraints on cosmological parameters, with accuracy reaching the level of millimeter per second (mm/s) or better. However, the canonical method provides relatively less stringent compared to the differential approach. Furthermore, when solely constraining the matter density parameter $Ω_m$, the strategy can be adapted to the canonical method. Nonetheless, the differential method exhibits clear advantages when simultaneously constraining the matter density parameter $Ω_m$ and the equation of state of dark energy. These findings validate SKA's capability in detecting redshift drift and refining observational cosmology and indicates the effect can offer superior diagnostic capabilities compared to other techniques, provided that appropriate observational equipment or sufficient observational time is employed.

Discovery of a high-velocity cloud of the Milky Way as a potential dark galaxy

High-velocity clouds (HVCs) are composed of neutral hydrogen (HI) moving at velocities that deviate from the general rotational motion of the Milky Way. Currently, the origins of the HVCs remain poorly known due to the difficulty in determining their distance and the lack of any other suitable identification. Here we report the detection of a compact gas clump in HVC AC-I, which displays characteristics typical of a disk galaxy, named AC G185.0-11.5, using the HI observations. We estimated the distance of AC G185.0-11.5 to be about 277.7 kpc using the Baryonic Tully-Fisher relation and constrained its HI gas mass to be between 3.0*10^7 and 4.7*10^8 solar masses. The distance determination indicates that the HVC AC-I hosting AC G185.0-11.5 is an extragalactic object in the Local Group. The absence of molecular gas and an optical counterpart for AC G185.0-11.5 implies that it may be a rare dark galaxy.

DoCIA: An Online Document-Level Context Incorporation Agent for Speech Translation

Document-level context is crucial for handling discourse challenges in text-to-text document-level machine translation (MT). Despite the increased discourse challenges introduced by noise from automatic speech recognition (ASR), the integration of document-level context in speech translation (ST) remains insufficiently explored. In this paper, we develop DoCIA, an online framework that enhances ST performance by incorporating document-level context. DoCIA decomposes the ST pipeline into four stages. Document-level context is integrated into the ASR refinement, MT, and MT refinement stages through auxiliary LLM (large language model)-based modules. Furthermore, DoCIA leverages document-level information in a multi-level manner while minimizing computational overhead. Additionally, a simple yet effective determination mechanism is introduced to prevent hallucinations from excessive refinement, ensuring the reliability of the final results. Experimental results show that DoCIA significantly outperforms traditional ST baselines in both sentence and discourse metrics across four LLMs, demonstrating its effectiveness in improving ST performance.

The HI Mass Function of the Local Universe: Combining Measurements from HIPASS, ALFALFA and FASHI

We present the first HI mass function (HIMF) measurement for the recent FAST All Sky HI (FASHI) survey and the most complete measurements of HIMF in the local universe thus far. We obtained these results by combining the HI catalogues from HI Parkes All Sky Survey (HIPASS), Arecibo Legacy Fast ALFA (ALFALFA) and FASHI surveys at redshift 0 < z < 0.05, covering 76% of the entire sky. We adopted the same methods to estimate the distances, calculate the sample completeness, and determine the HIMF for all three surveys. The best-fit Schechter function for the total HIMF shows a low-mass slope parameter of alpha = -1.30 and a knee mass log(Ms) = 9.86, along with a normalisation of phi_s = 0.00658. This gives us the cosmic HI abundance: omega_HI= 0.000454. We find that a double Schechter function with the same slope alpha better describes our HIMF, where the two different knee masses are log(Ms1) = 9.96 and log(Ms2) = 9.65. We verify that the measured HIMF is marginally affected by the choice of distance estimates. The effect of cosmic variance is significantly suppressed by combining the three surveys and this provides a unique opportunity to obtain an unbiased estimate of the HIMF in the Local Universe.

FAST Discovery of A Gas-rich and Ultra-faint Dwarf Galaxy: KK153

Based on a high-sensitivity HI survey using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST), we identified an isolated HI cloud with a system velocity of ~127.0 km/s, which is associated with an optical galaxy KK153 in space. The HI gas of KK153 shows a typical disk-galaxy structure. Using the Baryonic Tully-Fisher relation, we obtained that the distance to KK153 is 2.0_{-0.8}^{+1.7} Mpc. Adopting such distance, we derived a stellar mass of 4.1_{-2.6}^{+10.0}*10^{5} Msun and a neutral gas fraction of 0.63, implying that KK153 is a gas-rich ultra-faint dwarf (UFD) galaxy in the Local Group or its outskirts. KK153 shows a cool (~200 K) and warm (~7400 K) two-phase neutral medium. The g-r color distribution of KK153 suggests that new stars are mostly forming in its inner disk. The dynamical mass of KK153 is 6.9_{-3.0}^{+5.5}*10^{7} Msun, which is about 60 times larger than its baryonic matter. Detection of such a low-mass and gas-rich halo poses a challenge to the theory of cosmic reionization.

Magnetic field properties of the SNR HB 9

We aim to study the polarization and magnetic field properties of the SNR HB 9 using new 21-cm continuum cube data from the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio telescope (FAST). We computed the Faraday depth at 21 cm, and re-analyzed the rotation measures (RMs) of HB 9 using in addition Effelsberg 2695-MHz and Urumqi 4800-MHz polarization data. FAST total-intensity images of two subbands are decomposed into components of multiple angular scales to check spectral-index variation via temperature versus temperature plots (TT-plots). The filamentary emission has a spectral index ($S\simν^α$) of $α=-$0.52, corresponding to freshly accelerated relativistic electrons. The diffuse emission has a steeper spectrum of $α=-$0.63, corresponding to confined electrons that are no longer accelerated. The FAST detected 1385-MHz polarized emission might come from a thin layer in the outer envelope of the shells, with a Faraday depth of 4-28 rad m$^{-2}$ from the Faraday rotation synthesis result. The RMs derived from the Effelsberg 2695-MHz and Urumqi 4800-MHz polarization data show about 70 rad m$^{-2}$ in the eastern and northern shell, and 124 rad m$^{-2}$ in the inner and southern patches. The regular magnetic field is about 5$-$8 $μ$G over the remnant. The northern shell shows depolarization at 2695 MHz relative to the 4800-MHz polarization data, indicating an additional random magnetic field of 12 $μ$G on the scale of 0.6 pc. The shock wave might have entered the dense gas environment in the northern-shell region and has driven turbulence to cause depolarization at 2695 MHz.

Formation of the dark-matter deficient S0 galaxy NGC 4111 under the tidal interactions

We present the high-sensitivity and large-scale atomic hydrogen (HI) observations towards lenticular (S0) galaxy NGC 4111 using the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Radio Telescope (FAST). The column density map shows that NGC4111 and seven other different types of galaxies share a huge HI gas complex. The data also suggest that NGC 4111 is interacting with seven galaxies. Moreover, we identified a rotating gas disk associated with NGC 4111 from the HI complex. Still, the HI disk rotation direction has deviated from its stellar disk about 34.2$^{\circ}$, indicating that the NGC 4111 galaxy is undergoing a transition from a spiral galaxy to an S0 galaxy by the tidal interactions. The obtained dark matter-to-stellar mass ratio of NGC4111 is 3.1$\pm$0.7, which is lower than the average value of the Local Universe, implying that the interactions may strip its dark matter. Our results suggest that in a galaxy group environment, tidal interactions have a significant effect on galaxy features.

The FAST HI 21-cm absorption blind survey. II. -- Statistic Exploration for Associated and Intervening systems

We present an extragalactic HI 21-cm absorption lines catalog from a blind search at z $\leqslant$ 0.35, using drift-scan data collected in 1325.6 hours by the ongoing Commensal Radio Astronomy FasT Survey (CRAFTS) and FAST All Sky HI Survey (FASHI), which spans a sky area of 6072.0 deg$^{2}$ and covers 84533 radio sources with a flux density greater than 12 mJy. 14 previously identified HI absorbers and 20 newly discovered HI absorbers were detected, comprising 15 associated systems, 10 intervening systems, and 9 systems with undetermined classifications. Through spectral stacking, the mean peak optical path, mean velocity-integrated optical path, mean FWHM and mean HI column density are measured to be 0.47 and 0.30; 27.19 and 4.36 km s$^{-1}$; 42.61 and 9.33 km s$^{-1}$; 0.49 and 0.08 T$_{s} \times$ 10$^{20}$cm$^{-2}$K$^{-1}$, for the associated and intervening samples, respectively. Statistical analysis also reveals that associated systems tend to be hosted by red ($g-r>$0.7) galaxies at lower redshifts, whereas galaxies hosting intervening HI absorption are typically found at higher redshifts and are of a bluer ($g-r\leqslant$0.7) type. A noticeable difference is observed in the positions of foregrounds, backgrounds of intervening systems, and high-redshift and low-redshift associated systems on the WISE color-color diagram. All identified foreground sources in our sample have W1-W2 magnitudes below 0.8, suggesting no Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). In contrast, backgrounds of intervening systems tend to have W1-W2 magnitudes above 0.8, indicating AGN presence. For associated absorption, most low-redshift ($z\leqslant$0.5) systems show W1-W2 values below 0.8, while higher-redshift associated absorption ($z>$0.5) displays a broader range of W1-W2 values.

Simultaneous optical power delivery and distributed sensing through cross-band wavelength multiplexing over fiber link

Optical fibers offer significant advantages in both power delivery and distributed sensing. In remote areas where stable power supply is not easy to access, the distributed optical fiber sensing (DOFS) which offers long distance monitoring capability and the power-over-fiber (PoF) which can provide energy for connected electronics or other sensors are highly desired simultaneously. In this letter, the PoF-DOFS hybrid system is proposed and experimentally verified for the first time. By multiplexing the power channel and sensing channel with large wavelength separation, the cross-talk is greatly reduced. The results show that the Brillouin frequency shift under different temperature in the Brillouin optical time domain reflectometry remains unaffected by the high-power transmission background and the power delivery efficiency up to ~66% can be achieved over 1.3 km fiber link. This work paves the way for further research on PoF-DOFS hybrid system and gives a valuable solution for creating multi-parameter, multi-scale sensing network without the need for local power source.

Redshift drift effect through the observation of HI 21cm signal with SKA

This study presents the findings of using the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope to measure redshift drift via the HI 21cm signal, employing semi-annual observational interval within redshift around z $\sim$ 1 with main goal is to directly gauge the universe's expansion acceleration rate with millimeter-per-second (mm/s) precision. The SKA can detect over a billion HI 21cm emissions from individual galaxies to the redshift z $\sim$ 2 and thousands of absorption lines from Damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) systems against bright quasars to the redshift z $\sim$ 13, with the sensitivity limit of 100 mJy. By utilizing SKA's high spectral resolution settings (0.001, 0.002, 0.005, 0.01 Hz) to detect redshift drift, particularly focusing on the 0.001 and 0.002 Hz configuration, one aims to achieve the necessary mm/s in precision measurement by the 0.5-year observation period. The velocity drift rate, crucially determined by the two operational regimes within 0.01 to 0.21 mm/s and 0.031 to 0.17 mm/s, respectively, exceeds the theoretical accuracy limit of 1.28 mm/s. The analysis thoroughly restricts cosmological parameters related to dark energy using the Sandage-Loeb (SL) signal from the HI 21cm emission and absorption lines. It estimates $\rm H_0$ of about 70 km/s/Mpc, $\rm Ω_m$ near 0.3, with w close to -1, $\rm w_0$ around -1, and $\rm w_a$ approaching -0.1. These results strongly endorse the SL effect as an effective method for confirming cosmic acceleration and exploring the dark sector in real-time cosmology with the SKA.

AgentOhana: Design Unified Data and Training Pipeline for Effective Agent Learning

Autonomous agents powered by large language models (LLMs) have garnered significant research attention. However, fully harnessing the potential of LLMs for agent-based tasks presents inherent challenges due to the heterogeneous nature of diverse data sources featuring multi-turn trajectories. In this paper, we introduce \textbf{AgentOhana} as a comprehensive solution to address these challenges. \textit{AgentOhana} aggregates agent trajectories from distinct environments, spanning a wide array of scenarios. It meticulously standardizes and unifies these trajectories into a consistent format, streamlining the creation of a generic data loader optimized for agent training. Leveraging the data unification, our training pipeline maintains equilibrium across different data sources and preserves independent randomness across devices during dataset partitioning and model training. Additionally, we present \textbf{xLAM-v0.1}, a large action model tailored for AI agents, which demonstrates exceptional performance across various benchmarks. FASHI: An untargeted survey of the 21 cm HI absorption galaxies with FAST

The FAST All Sky H I survey (FASHI) will cover the entire observable sky ($\sim$22000 square degrees) with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). With the currently released data, we perform an untargeted survey of 21 cm HI absorption galaxies at redshift $z\lesssim0.09$ over an area of about 10000 square degrees. We have detected 51 HI absorbers, including 21 previously known and 30 new ones. The probability of occurrence for the HI absorbers in all HI galaxies is 1/1078. The radio flux densities of the FASHI absorbers are mainly concentrated in the range of $S_{\rm 1.4GHz}=10\sim100$ mJy, but also as low as $2.6\pm0.4$ mJy. We find that the host galaxies of the associated HI absorbers have relatively high star formation rates, and there is a negative correlation between the HI column density and the stellar mass in the host galaxy. Consequently, FAST has significantly improved the capabilities and performance for HI absorption observations and has provided a true untargeted survey of 21 cm HI absorption galaxies for such studies.

Non-Interrupting Rail Track Geometry Measurement System Using UAV and LiDAR

The safety of train operations is largely dependent on the health of rail tracks, necessitating regular and meticulous inspection and maintenance. A significant part of such inspections involves geometric measurements of the tracks to detect any potential problems. Traditional methods for track geometry measurements, while proven to be accurate, require track closures during inspections, and consume a considerable amount of time as the inspection area grows, causing significant disruptions to regular operations. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a track geometry measurement system (TGMS) that utilizes an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) platform equipped with a light detection and ranging (LiDAR) sensor. Integrated with a state-of-the-art machine-learning-based computer vision algorithm, and a simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM) algorithm, this platform can conduct rail geometry inspections seamlessly over a larger area without interrupting rail operations. In particular, this semi- or fully automated measurement is found capable of measuring critical rail geometry irregularities in gauge, curvature, and profile with sub-inch accuracy. Cross-level and warp are not measured due to the absence of gravity data. By eliminating operational interruptions, our system offers a more streamlined, cost-effective, and safer solution for inspecting and maintaining rail infrastructure.

PRACT: Optimizing Principled Reasoning and Acting of LLM Agent

We introduce the Principled Reasoning and Acting (PRAct) framework, a novel method for learning and enforcing action principles from trajectory data. Central to our approach is the use of text gradients from a reflection and optimization engine to derive these action principles. To adapt action principles to specific task requirements, we propose a new optimization framework, Reflective Principle Optimization (RPO). After execution, RPO employs a reflector to critique current action principles and an optimizer to update them accordingly. We develop the RPO framework under two scenarios: Reward-RPO, which uses environmental rewards for reflection, and Self-RPO, which conducts self-reflection without external rewards. Additionally, two RPO methods, RPO-Traj and RPO-Batch, is introduced to adapt to different settings. Experimental results across four environments demonstrate that the PRAct agent, leveraging the RPO framework, effectively learns and applies action principles to enhance performance.

Deep HI Mapping of M 106 Group with FAST

We used FAST to conduct deep HI imaging of the entire M 106 group region, and have discovered a few new HI filaments and clouds. Three HI clouds/filaments are found in a region connecting DDO 120 and NGC 4288, indicating an interaction between these two galaxies. The HI features in this region suggest that DDO 120 is probably the origin of the HI stream extending from the northern end of NGC 4288 to M 106. This structure is similar to the SMC-LMC stream, but much longer, about 190 kpc. Furthermore, based on the distance measurements, we have determined the satellite galaxy members of M 106. With an absolute magnitude cutoff of M_B=-10, we obtained a sample of 11 member satellite galaxies for M 106. Using the observed HI mass with FAST, we studied the properties of satellite galaxies in M 106 and found that satellite galaxies with lower stellar masses exhibit more significant deviations from the star-forming main sequence (SFMS) in their specific star formation rates. Furthermore, the relationship between the HI mass of satellite galaxies and optical diameter generally follows the field galaxies relation. We discuss the possible mechanisms leading to the quenching in the M 106 group based on the new data from FAST

Development of a Platform to Enable Real Time, Non-disruptive Testing and Early Fault Detection of Critical High Voltage Transformers and Switchgears in High Speed-rail

Partial discharge (PD) incidents can occur in critical components of high-speed rail electric systems, such as transformers and switchgears, due to localized insulation defects that cannot withstand electric stress, leading to potential flashovers. These incidents can escalate over time, resulting in breakdowns, downtime, and safety risks. Fortunately, PD activities emit radio frequency (RF) signals, allowing for the development of a hardware platform for real-time, non-invasive PD detection and monitoring. The system uses an RF antenna and high-speed data acquisition to scan signals across a configurable frequency range (100MHz to 3GHz), utilizing intermediate frequency modulation and sliding frequency windows for detailed analysis. When signals exceed a threshold, the system records the events, capturing both raw signal data and spectrum snapshots. Real-time data is streamed to a cloud server, offering remote access through a dedicated smartphone application, enabling maintenance teams to monitor and respond promptly. Laboratory testing has confirmed the system's ability to accurately capture RF signals and provide real-time PD monitoring, enhancing the reliability and safety of high-speed rail infrastructure.

New HI observations Toward the NGC 5055 Galaxy Group with FAST

We report a new high-sensitivity HI mapping observation of the NGC 5055 galaxy group over an area of $1.^\circ5\times0.^\circ75$ with the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical radio Telescope (FAST). Our observation reveals that the warped H\,{\sc i} disk of NGC~5055 is more extended than what previously observed by WSRT, out to $ 23.'9$ (61.7 kpc). The total HI mass of NGC 5055 is determined to be $\rm\sim 1.1\times10^{10}\,M_\odot$. We identified three HI clouds with HI masses of the order of $\rm \sim 10^7\,M_\odot$ at the southeastern edge of the HI disk, as well as a candidate high-velocity cloud with an HI mass of $\rm (1.2\pm0.5) \times10^6\,M_\odot$ to the north of NGC 5055. The HI content of UGCA 337 is robustly detected for the first time by the FAST observations. It has a narrow HI linewidth of $W_{50}=17.4\pm3.8$ km s$^{-1}$ with a total \HI\ mass of ($\rm 3.5\pm0.3)\times10^6\,M_\odot$. Comparing the gas content and g-r color of UGCA 337 with typical low-mass dwarf galaxies, UGCA~337 appears relatively gas-poor despite its blue color. This suggests that UGCA 337 may have undergone gas stripping in the past. We also analyzed the possible origin of the diffuse HI clouds located at the outskirts of NGC 5055, and speculate that they might be the remnant features of a merger event in the past.

MOSS: Enabling Code-Driven Evolution and Context Management for AI Agents

Developing AI agents powered by large language models (LLMs) faces significant challenges in achieving true Turing completeness and adaptive, code-driven evolution. Current approaches often generate code independently of its runtime context, relying heavily on the LLM's memory, which results in inefficiencies and limits adaptability. Manual protocol development in sandbox environments further constrains the agent's autonomous adaptability. Crucially, achieving consistency in code and context across multi-turn interactions and ensuring isolation of local variables within each interaction remains an unsolved problem. We introduce MOSS (llM-oriented Operating System Simulation), a novel framework that addresses these challenges by integrating code generation with a dynamic context management system. MOSS ensures consistency and adaptability by using a mechanism that maintains the Python context across interactions, including isolation of local variables and preservation of runtime integrity. At its core, the framework employs an Inversion of Control (IoC) container in conjunction with decorators to enforce the least knowledge principle, allowing agents to focus on abstract interfaces rather than concrete implementations. This facilitates seamless integration of new tools and libraries, enables runtime instance replacement, and reduces prompt complexity, providing a "what you see is what you get" environment for the agent. Through a series of case studies, we show how this framework can enhance the efficiency and capabilities of agent development and highlight its advantages in moving towards Turing-complete agents capable of evolving through code.
