Depicting the Landscape of Generic Effective Field Theories

We describe a general framework to depict the space of Lorentz invariant effective field theories, which we call the landscape, given any kind of gauge symmetry and field content. Various operator bases in the landscape can be systematically constructed, with the help of amplitude-operator correspondence, to emphasize different aspects: operator independence (y-basis), flavor relation (p-basis) and conserved quantum number (j-basis). The transformation matrices among the bases encode model-independent properties of the operators, such as implications on their UV origin. We illustrate this salient feature in examining the dimension 9 operators relevant for neutron-antineutron oscillation.

Complete Set of Dimension-9 Operators in the Standard Model Effective Field Theory

We present a complete and independent list of the dimension 9 operator basis in the Standard Model effective field theory by an automatic algorithm based on the amplitude-operator correspondence. A complete basis (y-basis) is first constructed by enumerating Young tableau of an auxiliary $SU(N)$ group and the gauge groups, with the equation-of-motion and integration-by-part redundancies all removed. In the presence of repeated fields, another basis (p-basis) with explicit flavor symmetries among them is derived from the y-basis, which further induces a basis of independent monomial operators through a systematic process called de-symmetrization. Our form of operators have advantages over the traditional way of presenting operators constrained by flavor relations, in the simplicity of both eliminating flavor redundancies and identifying independent flavor-specified operators. We list the 90456 (560) operators for three (one) generations of fermions, all of which violate baryon number or lepton number conservation; among them we find new violation patterns as $ΔB = 2$ and $ΔL = 3$, which only appear at the dimensions $d \ge 9$.

New Selection Rules from Angular Momentum Conservation

We derive the generalized partial wave expansion for $M \rightarrow N$ scattering amplitude in terms of spinor helicity variables. The basis amplitudes of the expansion with definite angular momentum $j$ consist of the Poincare Clebsch-Gordan coefficients, while $j$ constrains the UV physics that could generate the corresponding operators at tree level. Moreover, we obtain a series of selection rules that restrict the anomalous dimension matrix of effective operators and the way how effective operators contribute to some $2 \rightarrow N$ amplitudes at the loop level.

Standard Model Effective Field Theory from On-shell Amplitudes

We present a general method of constructing unfactorizable on-shell amplitudes (amplitude basis), and build up their one-to-one correspondence to the independent and complete operator basis in effective field theory (EFT). We apply our method to the Standard Model EFT, and identify the amplitude basis in dimension 5 and 6, which correspond to the Weinberg operator and operators in Warsaw basis except for some linear combinations.

Complexity-action of subregions with corners

In the past, the study of the divergence structure of the holographic entanglement entropy on singular boundary regions uncovered cut-off independent coefficients. These coefficients were shown to be universal and to encode important field theory data. Inspired by these lessons we study the UV divergences of subregion complexity-action (CA) in a region with corner (kink). We develop a systematic approach to study all the divergence structures, and we emphasize that the counter term that restores reparameterization invariance on the null boundaries plays a crucial role in simplifying the results and rendering them more transparent. We find that a general form of subregion CA contains a part dependent on the null generator normalizations and a part that is independent of them. The former includes a volume contribution as well as an area contribution. We comment on the origin of the area term as entanglement entropy, and point out that its presence constitutes a robust difference between the two prescriptions to calculate subregion complexity (-action v.s. -volume). We also find universal $\logδ$ divergence associated with the kink feature of the subregion. Similar flat angle limit as the subregion-CV result is obtained.

Rotating traversable wormholes in AdS

In this work we explore the effect of rotation in the size of a traversable wormhole obtained via a double trace boundary deformation. We find that at fixed temperature the size of the wormhole increases with the angular momentum $J/M\ell$. The amount of information that can be sent through the wormhole increases as well. However, for the type of interaction considered, the wormhole closes as the temperature approaches the extremal limit. We also briefly consider the scenario where the boundary coupling is not spatially homogeneous and show how this is reflected in the wormhole opening.

Holographic complexity and non-commutative gauge theory

We study the holographic complexity of noncommutative field theories. The four-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ noncommutative super Yang-Mills theory with Moyal algebra along two of the spatial directions has a well known holographic dual as a type IIB supergravity theory with a stack of D3 branes and non-trivial NS-NS B fields. We start from this example and find that the late time holographic complexity growth rate, based on the "complexity equals action" conjecture, experiences an enhancement when the non-commutativity is turned on. This enhancement saturates a new limit which is exactly 1/4 larger than the commutative value. We then attempt to give a quantum mechanics explanation of the enhancement. Finite time behavior of the complexity growth rate is also studied. Inspired by the non-trivial result, we move on to more general setup in string theory where we have a stack of D$p$ branes and also turn on the B field. Multiple noncommutative directions are considered in higher $p$ cases.

Electroweak Baryogenesis in a Scalar-Assisted Vector-Like Fermion Model

We extend the standard model to a scalar-assisted vector-like fermion model to realize electroweak baryogenesis. The extended Cabbibo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix, due to the mixing among the vector-like quark and the standard model quarks, provides additional sources of the CP violation. Together with the enhancement from large vector-like quark mass, a large enough baryon-to-photon ratio could be obtained. The strongly first-order phase transition could be realized via the potential barrier which separate the broken minimum and the symmetric minimum in the scalar potential. We investigate in detail the one-loop temperature-dependent effective potential, and perform a random parameter scan to study the allowed parameter region that satisfies the strongly first order phase transition criteria $v_c \ge T_c$. Several distinct patterns of phase transition are classified and discussed. Among these patterns, large trilinear mass term between the Higgs boson and the scalar is preferred, for it controls the width of the potential barrier. Our results indicate large quartic scalar couplings, and moderate mixing angle between the Higgs boson and the new scalar. This parameter region could be further explored at the Run 2 LHC.

Stabilizing Electroweak Vacuum in a Vector-like Fermion Model

To avoid possible electroweak vacuum instability in the vector-like fermion model, we introduce a new singlet scalar to the model, which couples to the vector-like fermion, and also mixes with the Higgs boson after spontaneous symmetry breaking. We investigate the vector-like fermion predominantly coupled to the third generation quarks, and its mass is generated from the vacuum expectation value of the new scalar field in the model. In this setup, as running towards high energies, the new scalar provides positive contribution to the running of the higgs quartic coupling, and the matching on the scale of the scalar mass gives rise to a threshod effect that lifts up the higgs quartic coupling strength. The two effects help stabilize the electroweak vacuum of the Higgs potential. Therefore, this setup could evade possible vacuum instability in the vector-like fermion model. We show that a large range of parameter space is allowed to have both stable Higgs vacuum and perturbativity of all the running couplings, up to the Planck scale. We also examine the experimental constraints from the electroweak precision observables such as oblique corrections S, T and non-oblique corrections to the Zbb coupling, the Higgs coupling precision measurements, and the current LHC direct searches.
