Superconductivity Favored Anisotropic Phase Stiffness in Infinite-Layer Nickelates

In unconventional superconductors such as cuprates and iron pnictides and chalcogenides, phase stiffness - a measure of the energy cost associated with superconducting phase variations - is on the same order of magnitude as the strength of Cooper pairing, translating to superconductivity governed by phase fluctuations. However, due to a lack of a direct experimental probe, there remains a fundamental gap in establishing microscopic picture between unconventional superconductivity and phase fluctuations. Here we show a vector current technique that allows for in-situ angle-resolved transport measurements, providing exclusive evidence suggesting an anisotropic nature of phase stiffness in infinite-layer nickelate superconductors. Pronounced anisotropy of in-plane resistance manifests itself in both normal and superconducting transition states, indicating crystal symmetry breaking. Remarkably, the electric conductivity of Nd0.8Sr0.2NiO2 peaks at 125° between the direction of the current and crystal principal axis, but this angle evolves to 160° near zero-resistance temperature. Further measurements reveal that the superconductivity is favored along a direction with minimized phase fluctuations, an orientation strikingly deviating from the symmetric direction imposed by both electronic anisotropy and the underlying crystal lattice. Identical measurements conducted on a prototypical cuprate superconductor yield consistent results, suggesting that this previously unknown behavior could be ubiquitous. By shielding insight into the contrasting anisotropy between electron fluid and superfluid, our findings provide clues for a unified framework for understanding unconventional superconductors

Trinity: A Scalable and Forward-Secure DSSE for Spatio-Temporal Range Query

Cloud-based outsourced Location-based services have profound impacts on various aspects of people's lives but bring security concerns. Existing spatio-temporal data secure retrieval schemes have significant shortcomings regarding dynamic updates, either compromising privacy through leakage during updates (forward insecurity) or incurring excessively high update costs that hinder practical application. Under these circumstances, we first propose a basic filter-based spatio-temporal range query scheme \TrinityI that supports low-cost dynamic updates and automatic expansion. Furthermore, to improve security, reduce storage cost, and false positives, we propose a forward secure and verifiable scheme \TrinityII that simultaneously minimizes storage overhead. A formal security analysis proves that \TrinityI and \TrinityII are Indistinguishable under Selective Chosen-Plaintext Attack (IND-SCPA). Finally, extensive experiments demonstrate that our design \TrinityII significantly reduces storage requirements by 80\%, enables data retrieval at the 1 million-record level in just 0.01 seconds, and achieves 10 $\times$ update efficiency than state-of-art.

EC-Chain: Cost-Effective Storage Solution for Permissionless Blockchains

Permissionless blockchains face considerable challenges due to increasing storage demands, driven by the proliferation of Decentralized Applications (DApps). This paper introduces EC-Chain, a cost-effective storage solution for permissionless blockchains. EC-Chain reduces storage overheads of ledger and state data, which comprise blockchain data. For ledger data, EC-Chain refines existing erasure coding-based storage optimization techniques by incorporating batch encoding and height-based encoding. We also introduce an easy-to-implement dual-trie state management system that enhances state storage and retrieval through state expiry, mining, and creation procedures. To ensure data availability in permissionless environments, EC-Chain introduces a network maintenance scheme tailored for dynamism. Collectively, these contributions allow EC-Chain to provide an effective solution to the storage challenges faced by permissionless blockchains. Our evaluation demonstrates that EC-Chain can achieve a storage reduction of over \(90\%\) compared to native Ethereum Geth.

Partially Synchronous BFT Consensus Made Practical in Wireless Networks

Consensus is becoming increasingly important in wireless networks. Partially synchronous BFT consensus, a significant branch of consensus, has made considerable progress in wired networks. However, its implementation in wireless networks, especially in dynamic ad hoc wireless networks, remains challenging. Existing wireless synchronous consensus protocols, despite being well-developed, are not readily adaptable to partially synchronous settings. Additionally, reliable communication, a cornerstone of BFT consensus, can lead to high message and time complexity in wireless networks. To address these challenges, we propose a wireless communication protocol called ReduceCatch (Reduce and Catch) that supports reliable 1-to-N, N-to-1, and N-to-N communications. We employ ReduceCatch to tailor three partially synchronous BFT consensus protocols (PBFT, Tendermint, and HotStuff) for seamless adaptation from wired to ad hoc wireless networks. To evaluate the performance of the ReduceCatch-enabled consensus protocols, we develop a three-layer wireless consensus testbed, based on which we implement 20 distinct consensus protocols and measure their latency and throughput. The experimental results demonstrate the superiority of the ReduceCatch-based consensus protocol in terms of latency and throughput.

Upcycling Noise for Federated Unlearning

In Federated Learning (FL), multiple clients collaboratively train a model without sharing raw data. This paradigm can be further enhanced by Differential Privacy (DP) to protect local data from information inference attacks and is thus termed DPFL. An emerging privacy requirement, ``the right to be forgotten'' for clients, poses new challenges to DPFL but remains largely unexplored. Despite numerous studies on federated unlearning (FU), they are inapplicable to DPFL because the noise introduced by the DP mechanism compromises their effectiveness and efficiency. In this paper, we propose Federated Unlearning with Indistinguishability (FUI) to unlearn the local data of a target client in DPFL for the first time. FUI consists of two main steps: local model retraction and global noise calibration, resulting in an unlearning model that is statistically indistinguishable from the retrained model. Specifically, we demonstrate that the noise added in DPFL can endow the unlearning model with a certain level of indistinguishability after local model retraction, and then fortify the degree of unlearning through global noise calibration. Additionally, for the efficient and consistent implementation of the proposed FUI, we formulate a two-stage Stackelberg game to derive optimal unlearning strategies for both the server and the target client. Privacy and convergence analyses confirm theoretical guarantees, while experimental results based on four real-world datasets illustrate that our proposed FUI achieves superior model performance and higher efficiency compared to mainstream FU schemes. Simulation results further verify the optimality of the derived unlearning strategies.

AutoIoT: Automated IoT Platform Using Large Language Models

IoT platforms, particularly smart home platforms providing significant convenience to people's lives such as Apple HomeKit and Samsung SmartThings, allow users to create automation rules through trigger-action programming. However, some users may lack the necessary knowledge to formulate automation rules, thus preventing them from fully benefiting from the conveniences offered by smart home technology. To address this, smart home platforms provide pre-defined automation policies based on the smart home devices registered by the user. Nevertheless, these policies, being pre-generated and relatively simple, fail to adequately cover the diverse needs of users. Furthermore, conflicts may arise between automation rules, and integrating conflict detection into the IoT platform increases the burden on developers. In this paper, we propose AutoIoT, an automated IoT platform based on Large Language Models (LLMs) and formal verification techniques, designed to achieve end-to-end automation through device information extraction, LLM-based rule generation, conflict detection, and avoidance. AutoIoT can help users generate conflict-free automation rules and assist developers in generating codes for conflict detection, thereby enhancing their experience. A code adapter has been designed to separate logical reasoning from the syntactic details of code generation, enabling LLMs to generate code for programming languages beyond their training data. Finally, we evaluated the performance of AutoIoT and presented a case study demonstrating how AutoIoT can integrate with existing IoT platforms.

I'm Spartacus, No, I'm Spartacus: Measuring and Understanding LLM Identity Confusion

Large Language Models (LLMs) excel in diverse tasks such as text generation, data analysis, and software development, making them indispensable across domains like education, business, and creative industries. However, the rapid proliferation of LLMs (with over 560 companies developing or deploying them as of 2024) has raised concerns about their originality and trustworthiness. A notable issue, termed identity confusion, has emerged, where LLMs misrepresent their origins or identities. This study systematically examines identity confusion through three research questions: (1) How prevalent is identity confusion among LLMs? (2) Does it arise from model reuse, plagiarism, or hallucination? (3) What are the security and trust-related impacts of identity confusion? To address these, we developed an automated tool combining documentation analysis, self-identity recognition testing, and output similarity comparisons--established methods for LLM fingerprinting--and conducted a structured survey via Credamo to assess its impact on user trust. Our analysis of 27 LLMs revealed that 25.93% exhibit identity confusion. Output similarity analysis confirmed that these issues stem from hallucinations rather than replication or reuse. Survey results further highlighted that identity confusion significantly erodes trust, particularly in critical tasks like education and professional use, with declines exceeding those caused by logical errors or inconsistencies. Users attributed these failures to design flaws, incorrect training data, and perceived plagiarism, underscoring the systemic risks posed by identity confusion to LLM reliability and trustworthiness.

VMID: A Multimodal Fusion LLM Framework for Detecting and Identifying Misinformation of Short Videos

Short video platforms have become important channels for news dissemination, offering a highly engaging and immediate way for users to access current events and share information. However, these platforms have also emerged as significant conduits for the rapid spread of misinformation, as fake news and rumors can leverage the visual appeal and wide reach of short videos to circulate extensively among audiences. Existing fake news detection methods mainly rely on single-modal information, such as text or images, or apply only basic fusion techniques, limiting their ability to handle the complex, multi-layered information inherent in short videos. To address these limitations, this paper presents a novel fake news detection method based on multimodal information, designed to identify misinformation through a multi-level analysis of video content. This approach effectively utilizes different modal representations to generate a unified textual description, which is then fed into a large language model for comprehensive evaluation. The proposed framework successfully integrates multimodal features within videos, significantly enhancing the accuracy and reliability of fake news detection. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed approach outperforms existing models in terms of accuracy, robustness, and utilization of multimodal information, achieving an accuracy of 90.93%, which is significantly higher than the best baseline model (SV-FEND) at 81.05%. Furthermore, case studies provide additional evidence of the effectiveness of the approach in accurately distinguishing between fake news, debunking content, and real incidents, highlighting its reliability and robustness in real-world applications.

In-depth Understanding of the Band Alignment and Interface States Scenario in Bi$_2$O$_2$Se/SrTiO$_3$ Ultrathin Heterojunction

Bismuth oxyselenide (Bi$_2$O$_2$Se), a novel quasi-2D charge-carrying semiconductor, is hailed as one of the best emerging platforms for the next generation semiconductor devices. Recent efforts on developing diverse Bi$_2$O$_2$Se heterojunctions have produced extensive potential applications in electronics and optoelectronics. In-depth understanding of the band alignment and especially interface dynamics is, however, still challenging. In this work, a comprehensive experimental investigation on the band alignment is performed by a high-resolution X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (HRXPS), and the properties of interface states are also fully discussed. The results show that the ultrathin film Bi$_2$O$_2$Se grown on SrTiO$_3$ (TiO$_2$ (001) termination) exhibits Type-I (straddling gap) band alignment with a valence band offset (VBO) of about 1.77\pm0.04 eV and conduction band offset (CBO) of about 0.68\pm0.04 eV. However, further considering the contribution of the interface states, the bands on the interface present a herringbone configuration due to sizable build-in electric fields, which is significantly different from the conventional band alignment. In this sense, our results provide an insightful guidance to the development of high-efficiency electronic and optoelectronic devices, specifically of the devices where the charge transfer is highly sensitive to interface states.

Controllable and Fast Growth of High-Quality Atomically Thin and Atomically Flat Bi$_2$O$_2$Se Films

As a novel and promising 2D material, bismuth oxyselenide (Bi$_2$O$_2$Se) has demonstrated significant potential to overcome existing technical barriers in various electronic device applications, due to its unique physical properties like high symmetry, adjustable electronic structure, ultra-high electron mobility. However, the rapid growth of Bi$_2$O$_2$Se films down to a few atomic layers with precise control remains a significant challenge. In this work, the growth of two-dimensional (2D) Bi$_2$O$_2$Se thin films by the pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method is systematically investigated. By controlling temperature, oxygen pressure, laser energy density and laser emission frequency, we successfully prepare atomically thin and flat Bi$_2$O$_2$Se (001) thin films on the (001) surface of SrTiO3. Importantly, we provide a fundamental and unique perspective toward understanding the growth process of atomically thin and flat Bi$_2$O$_2$Se films, and the growth process can be primarily summarized into four steps: i) anisotropic non-spontaneous nucleation preferentially along the step roots; ii) monolayer Bi$_2$O$_2$Se nanosheets expanding across the surrounding area, and eventually covering the entire STO substrate step; iii) vertical growth of Bi$_2$O$_2$Se monolayer in a 2D Frank-van der Merwe (FM) epitaxial growth, and iv) with a layer-by-layer 2D FM growth mode, ultimately producing an atomically flat and epitaxially aligned thin film. Moreover, the combined results of the crystallinity quality, surface morphology and the chemical states manifest the successful PLD-growth of high-quality Bi$_2$O$_2$Se films in a controllable and fast mode.

Optimizing VGOS observations using an SNR-based scheduling approach

The geodetic and astrometric VLBI community is in the process of upgrading its existing infrastructure with VGOS. The primary objective of VGOS is to substantially boost the number of scans per hour for enhanced parameter estimation. However, the current observing strategy results in fewer scans than anticipated. During 2022, six 24-hour VGOS R&D sessions were conducted to demonstrate a proof-of-concept aimed at addressing this shortcoming. The new observation strategy centers around a signal-to-noise (SNR)-based scheduling approach combined with eliminating existing overhead times in existing VGOS sessions. Two SNR-based scheduling approaches were tested during these sessions: one utilizing inter-/extrapolation of existing S/X source flux density models and another based on a newly derived source flux density catalog at VGOS frequencies. Both approaches proved effective, leading to a 2.3-fold increase in the number of scheduled scans per station and a 2.6-fold increase in the number of observations per station, while maintaining a high observation success rate of approximately 90-95%. Consequently, both strategies succeeded in the main objective of these sessions by successfully increasing the number of scans per hour. The strategies described in this work can be easily applied to operational VGOS observations. Besides outlining and discussing the observation strategy, we further provide insight into the resulting signal-to-noise ratios, and discuss the impact on the precision of the estimated geodetic parameters. Monte Carlo simulations predicted a roughly 50% increase in geodetic precision compared to operational VGOS sessions. The analysis confirmed that the formal errors in estimated station coordinates were reduced by 40-50%. Additionally, Earth orientation parameters showed significant improvement, with a 40-50% reduction in formal errors.

A Treatment of EIP-1559: Enhancing Transaction Fee Mechanism through Nth-Price Auction

With the widespread adoption of blockchain technology, the transaction fee mechanism (TFM) in blockchain systems has become a prominent research topic. An ideal TFM should satisfy user incentive compatibility (UIC), miner incentive compatibility (MIC), and miner-user side contract proofness ($c$-SCP). However, state-of-the-art works either fail to meet these three properties simultaneously or only satisfy them under certain conditions. In this paper, we propose a burning $N$-price auction TFM named BNP. This mechanism divides the transaction fee into a base fee, which is burned, and a priority fee, which is allocated to miners. Theoretical proofs and experimental analyses demonstrate that, even under conditions of significant transaction congestion, this mechanism satisfies UIC, MIC, and $c$-SCP simultaneously. Furthermore, the BNP mechanism is not constrained by the type of blockchain consensus, making it widely applicable.

A Systematic Survey of Blockchained Federated Learning

With the technological advances in machine learning, effective ways are available to process the huge amount of data generated in real life. However, issues of privacy and scalability will constrain the development of machine learning. Federated learning (FL) can prevent privacy leakage by assigning training tasks to multiple clients, thus separating the central server from the local devices. However, FL still suffers from shortcomings such as single-point-failure and malicious data. The emergence of blockchain provides a secure and efficient solution for the deployment of FL. In this paper, we conduct a comprehensive survey of the literature on blockchained FL (BCFL). First, we investigate how blockchain can be applied to federal learning from the perspective of system composition. Then, we analyze the concrete functions of BCFL from the perspective of mechanism design and illustrate what problems blockchain addresses specifically for FL. We also survey the applications of BCFL in reality. Finally, we discuss some challenges and future research directions.

DataSafe: Copyright Protection with PUF Watermarking and Blockchain Tracking

Digital watermarking methods are commonly used to safeguard digital media copyrights by confirming ownership and deterring unauthorized use. However, without reliable third-party oversight, these methods risk security vulnerabilities during watermark extraction. Furthermore, digital media lacks tangible ownership attributes, posing challenges for secure copyright transfer and tracing. This study introduces DataSafe, a copyright protection scheme that combines physical unclonable functions (PUFs) and blockchain technology. PUF devices use their unique fingerprints for blockchain registration. Subsequently, these devices incorporate invisible watermarking techniques to embed digital watermarks into media for copyright protection. The watermark verification process is confined within the devices, preserving confidentiality during extraction, validating identities during copyright exchanges, and facilitating blockchain-based traceability of copyright transfers. The implementation of a prototype system on the LPC55S69-EVK development board is detailed, illustrating the practicality and effectiveness of the proposed solution.

Modeling Unified Semantic Discourse Structure for High-quality Headline Generation

Headline generation aims to summarize a long document with a short, catchy title that reflects the main idea. This requires accurately capturing the core document semantics, which is challenging due to the lengthy and background information-rich na ture of the texts. In this work, We propose using a unified semantic discourse structure (S3) to represent document semantics, achieved by combining document-level rhetorical structure theory (RST) trees with sentence-level abstract meaning representation (AMR) graphs to construct S3 graphs. The hierarchical composition of sentence, clause, and word intrinsically characterizes the semantic meaning of the overall document. We then develop a headline generation framework, in which the S3 graphs are encoded as contextual features. To consolidate the efficacy of S3 graphs, we further devise a hierarchical structure pruning mechanism to dynamically screen the redundant and nonessential nodes within the graph. Experimental results on two headline generation datasets demonstrate that our method outperforms existing state-of-art methods consistently. Our work can be instructive for a broad range of document modeling tasks, more than headline or summarization generation.

FileDES: A Secure Scalable and Succinct Decentralized Encrypted Storage Network

Decentralized Storage Network (DSN) is an emerging technology that challenges traditional cloud-based storage systems by consolidating storage capacities from independent providers and coordinating to provide decentralized storage and retrieval services. However, current DSNs face several challenges associated with data privacy and efficiency of the proof systems. To address these issues, we propose FileDES (\uline{D}ecentralized \uline{E}ncrypted \uline{S}torage), which incorporates three essential elements: privacy preservation, scalable storage proof, and batch verification. FileDES provides encrypted data storage while maintaining data availability, with a scalable Proof of Encrypted Storage (PoES) algorithm that is resilient to Sybil and Generation attacks. Additionally, we introduce a rollup-based batch verification approach to simultaneously verify multiple files using publicly verifiable succinct proofs. We conducted a comparative evaluation on FileDES, Filecoin, Storj and Sia under various conditions, including a WAN composed of up to 120 geographically dispersed nodes. Our protocol outperforms the others in terms of proof generation/verification efficiency, storage costs, and scalability.

On Protecting the Data Privacy of Large Language Models (LLMs): A Survey

Large language models (LLMs) are complex artificial intelligence systems capable of understanding, generating and translating human language. They learn language patterns by analyzing large amounts of text data, allowing them to perform writing, conversation, summarizing and other language tasks. When LLMs process and generate large amounts of data, there is a risk of leaking sensitive information, which may threaten data privacy. This paper concentrates on elucidating the data privacy concerns associated with LLMs to foster a comprehensive understanding. Specifically, a thorough investigation is undertaken to delineate the spectrum of data privacy threats, encompassing both passive privacy leakage and active privacy attacks within LLMs. Subsequently, we conduct an assessment of the privacy protection mechanisms employed by LLMs at various stages, followed by a detailed examination of their efficacy and constraints. Finally, the discourse extends to delineate the challenges encountered and outline prospective directions for advancement in the realm of LLM privacy protection.

BFT-DSN: A Byzantine Fault Tolerant Decentralized Storage Network

With the rapid development of blockchain and its applications, the amount of data stored on decentralized storage networks (DSNs) has grown exponentially. DSNs bring together affordable storage resources from around the world to provide robust, decentralized storage services for tens of thousands of decentralized applications (dApps). However, existing DSNs do not offer verifiability when implementing erasure coding for redundant storage, making them vulnerable to Byzantine encoders. Additionally, there is a lack of Byzantine fault-tolerant consensus for optimal resilience in DSNs. This paper introduces BFT-DSN, a Byzantine fault-tolerant decentralized storage network designed to address these challenges. BFT-DSN combines storage-weighted BFT consensus with erasure coding and incorporates homomorphic fingerprints and weighted threshold signatures for decentralized verification. The implementation of BFT-DSN demonstrates its comparable performance in terms of storage cost and latency as well as superior performance in Byzantine resilience when compared to existing industrial decentralized storage networks.
