Large genus asymptotics for frequency of non-simple curves

We give an expression for the frequency of non-simple curves in closed surfaces and exploit it to study relative frequencies of such curves in large genus. This extend to the case of non-simple curves Mirzakhani's expressions of frequencies in terms of Konsevitch polynomials and Delecroix-Goujard-Zograf-Zorich large genus asymptotics for those frequencies. In particular, with K fixed, we identify which types of curves with K intersections are most common.

Random surfaces with large systoles

We present two constructions, both inspired by ideas from graph theory, of sequences random surfaces of growing area, whose systoles grow logarithmically as a function of their area. This also allows us to prove a new lower bound on the maximal systole of a closed orientable hyperbolic surface of a given genus.

Length spectrum of large genus random metric maps

We study the length of short cycles on uniformly random metric maps (also known as ribbon graphs) of large genus using a Teichm\"uller theory approach. We establish that, as the genus tends to infinity, the length spectrum converges to a Poisson point process with an explicit intensity. This result extends the work of Janson and Louf to the multi-faced case.

Low-lying geodesics on the modular surface and necklaces

The m-thick part of the modular surface X is the smallest compact subsurface of X with horocycle boundary containing all the closed geodesics which wind around the cusp at most m times. The m-thick parts form a compact exhaustion of X. We are interested in the geodesics that lie in the m-thick part (so called m low-lying geodesics). We produce a complete asymptotic expansion for the number of m low-lying geodesics of length equal to 2n in the modular surface. In particular, we obtain the asymptotic growth rate of the m low-lying geodesics in terms of their word length using the natural generators of the modular group. After establishing a correspondence between this counting problem and the problem of counting necklaces with n beads, we perform a careful singularity analysis on the associated generating function of the sequence.

Length statistics of random multicurves on closed hyperbolic surfaces

In this paper, we determine the distribution of the length partition of a random multicurve of fixed topological type on a closed hyperbolic surface using the methods of Margulis' thesis and Mirzakhani's equidistribution theorem for horospheres. This distribution admits a polynomial density, whose coefficients can be expressed explicitly in terms of intersection numbers of psi-classes on the Deligne--Mumford compactification, and in particular it does not depend on the hyperbolic metric. This result generalizes prior work of M. Mirzakhani in the case of random pants decompositions. Results very close to ours are obtained independently and simultaneously by F. Arana-Herrera.
