Co-Propagation of Quantum Time Synchronization and Optical Frequency Transfer over a 122 km Hollow-Core Fiber

The co-propagation of quantum and classical signals through shared optical fibers is crucial for scalable quantum networks. However, this coexistence is fundamentally limited by spontaneous Raman scattering (SpRS) from the bright classical light, which generates overwhelming noise that disrupts the single-photon-level quantum signals. Here, we overcome this long-standing challenge by leveraging the inherently ultralow nonlinearity of hollow-core fiber (HCF) to suppress SpRS noise. By operating both the quantum time synchronization (QTS) and classical optical frequency transfer (OFT) signals within the telecom C-band, separated by only ~10 nm, we successfully demonstrate their simultaneous transmission over a 122-km HCF link. With a classical OFT power of 1 mW, the QTS performance shows negligible degradation, maintaining sub-picosecond time stability at 2000 s, while the OFT achieves a fractional frequency instability of 10^-20. Near-sub-picosecond QTS stability is preserved even when the classical power is increased to 3 mW. Furthermore, simulations based on our experimental data indicate that with next-generation low-loss HCF, the platform can tolerate classical powers beyond 10 mW and extend the QTS range to over 500 km. By realizing a unified quantum-classical time-frequency distribution framework, this work establishes HCF as a highly capable and practical platform for future scalable quantum networks.

Efficient multiplexed quantum memory with high dimensional orbital angular momentum states in cold atoms

Quantum memory plays a pivotal role in the construction of quantum repeaters, which are essential devices for establishing long-distance quantum communications and large-scale quantum networks. To boost information capacity and signal processing speed, the implementation of high-efficiency multiplexed quantum memories is essential for the development of multiplexed quantum repeaters. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate an efficient multiplexed quantum memory by consolidating photons carrying high-dimensional orbital angular momentum (OAM) state from 4 individual channels into an elongated cold $^{87}$Rb atomic ensemble. Benefiting from the cold atomic ensemble with high optical depth, we obtain a storage efficiency exceeding 70% for the 4-channel multiplexed beam. The storage fidelities surpass 83% when all channels are operated in a 4-dimensional Hilbert space, which is far above the classical benchmark and validates the quantum functionality of our memory system. The achieved high-efficiency OAM multiplexed quantum memory opens up an avenue for efficient quantum information processing over multiple parallel channels, promising significant advances in the field of quantum communication and networking.

Quantum microwave photonic mixer with a large spurious-free dynamic range

As one of the most fundamental functionalities of microwave photonics, microwave frequency mixing plays an essential role in modern radars and wireless communication systems. However, the commonly utilized intensity modulation in the systems often leads to inadequate spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) for many sought-after applications. Quantum microwave photonics technique offers a promising solution for improving SFDR in terms of higher-order harmonic distortion. In this paper, we demonstrate two types of quantum microwave photonic mixers based on the configuration of the intensity modulators: cascade-type and parallel-type. Leveraging the nonlocal RF signal encoding capability, both types of quantum microwave photonic mixers not only exhibit the advantage of dual-channel output but also present significant improvement in SFDR. Specifically, the parallel-type quantum microwave photonic mixer achieves a remarkable SFDR value of 113.6 dB.Hz1/2, which is 30 dB better than that of the cascade-type quantum microwave photonic mixer. When compared to the classical microwave photonic mixer, this enhancement reaches a notable 53.6 dB at the expense of 8 dB conversion loss. These results highlight the superiority of quantum microwave photonic mixers in the fields of microwave and millimeter-wave systems. Further applying multi-photon frequency entangled sources as optical carriers, the dual-channel microwave frequency conversion capability endowed by the quantum microwave photonic mixer can be extended to enhance the performance of multiple-paths microwave mixing which is essential for radar net systems.

A versatile quantum microwave photonic signal processing platform based on coincidence window selection technique

Quantum microwave photonics (QMWP) is an innovative approach that combines energy-time entangled biphoton sources as the optical carrier with time-correlated single-photon detection for high-speed RF signal recovery. This groundbreaking method offers unique advantages such as nonlocal RF signal encoding and robust resistance to dispersion-induced frequency fading. This paper explores the versatility of processing the quantum microwave photonic signal by utilizing coincidence window selection on the biphoton coincidence distribution. The demonstration includes finely-tunable RF phase shifting, flexible multi-tap transversal filtering (with up to 15 taps), and photonically implemented RF mixing, leveraging the nonlocal RF mapping characteristic of QMWP. These accomplishments significantly enhance the capability of microwave photonic systems in processing ultra-weak signals, opening up new possibilities for various applications.

Dynamic temperature compensation for wavelength-stable entangled biphoton generation

A dynamic temperature compensation method is presented to stabilize the wavelength of the entangled biphoton source, which is generated via the spontaneous parametric down-conversion based on a MgO: PPLN waveguide. Utilizing the dispersive Fourier transformation technique combined with a digital proportional-integral-differential algorithm, the small amount of wavelength variation can be instantly identified and then compensated with active temperature correction. The long-term wavelength stability, assessed though Allan deviation, shows nearly a hundredfold enhancement, reaching 2.00*10^(-7) at the averaging time of 10000 s. It offers a simple, ready-to-use solution for precise wavelength control in quantum information processing.

Quantum two-way time transfer over a 103 km urban fiber

As a new approach to realizing high-precision time synchronization between remote time scales, quantum two-way time transfer via laboratory fiber link has shown significant enhancement of the transfer stability to several tens of femtoseconds. To verify its great potential in practical systems, the field test in long-haul installed fiber optic infrastructure is required to be demonstrated. In this paper, we implement the two-way quantum time transfer over a 103 km urban fiber link. A time transfer stability of 3.67 ps at 10 s and 0.28 ps at 40000 s has been achieved, despite the large attenuation of 38 dB leading to fewer than 40 correlated events per second. This achievement marks the first successful step of quantum two-way time transfer in the task of high-precision long-distance field transfer systems.

The multiplexed light storage of Orbital Angular Momentum based on atomic ensembles

The improvement of the multi-mode capability of quantum memory can further improve the utilization efficiency of the quantum memory and reduce the requirement of quantum communication for storage units. In this letter, we experimentally investigate the multi-mode light multiplexing storage of orbital angular momentum (OAM) mode based on rubidium vapor, and demultiplexing by a photonic OAM mode splitter which combines a Sagnac loop with two dove prisms. Our results show a mode extinction ratio higher than 80$\%$ at 1 $μ$s of storage time. Meanwhile, two OAM modes have been multiplexing stored and demultiplexed in our experimental configuration. We believe the experimental scheme may provide a possibility for high channel capacity and multi-mode quantum multiplexed quantum storage based on atomic ensembles.

Implementation of field two-way quantum synchronization of distant clocks across a 7 km deployed fiber link

The two-way quantum clock synchronization has been shown not only providing femtosecond-level synchronization capability but also security against symmetric delay attacks, thus becoming a prospective method to compare and synchronize distant clocks with both enhanced precision and security. In this letter, a field test of two-way quantum synchronization between a H-maser and a Rb clock linked by a 7 km-long deployed fiber was implemented. Limited by the frequency stability of the Rb clock, the achieved time stability at 30 s was measured as 32 ps. By applying a fiber-optic microwave frequency transfer technology, the stability was improved by more than one-magnitude to 1.9 ps, even though the number of acquired photon pairs was only 1440 in 30 s due to the low sampling rate of the utilized coincidence measurement system. Such implementation demonstrates the high practicability of two-way quantum clock synchronization method for promoting the field applications.

Demonstration of 50 km Fiber-optic two-way quantum time transfer at femtosecond-scale precision

The two-way quantum time transfer method has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated for its potential enhancements in precision and better guarantee of security. To further testify its advantage in practical applications, the applicable direct transmission distance as well as the achievable synchronization precision between independent time scales is of great interest. In this paper, an experiment on two-way quantum time transfer has been carried out over a 50 km long fiber link. With the common clock reference, a short-term stability of 2.6 ps at an averaging time of 7 s and a long-term stability of 54.6 fs at 57300 s were obtained. With independent clock references, assisted by microwave frequency transfer technology, the achieved synchronization showed almost equal performance and reached a stability of 89.5 fs at 57300 s. Furthermore, the spectral consistency of the utilized entangled photon pair sources has been studied concerning its effect on the transfer accuracy and long-term stability. The results obtained have promised a bright future of the two-way quantum time transfer for realizing high-precision time synchronization on metropolitan area fiber links.

Visualization of magnetic fields with cylindrical vector beams in a warm atomic vapor

We propose and demonstrate an experimental implementation for the observation of magnetic fields from spatial features of absorption profiles in a warm atomic vapor. A radially polarized vector beam that traverses an atomic vapor will generate an absorption pattern with petal-like structure by the mediation of a transverse magnetic field (TMF). The spatial absorption pattern rotates when the azimuthal angle of the TMF is changed, while its contrast decreases when the longitudinal component of the magnetic field increases. By analyzing the intensity distribution of the transmitted pattern we can determine the magnetic field strength. Our work provides a framework for investigating three-dimensional magnetic field distributions based on atoms.

Phase gradient protection of stored spatially multimode perfect optical vortex beams in a diffused rubidium vapor

We experimentally investigate the optical storage of perfect optical vortex (POV) and spatially multimode perfect optical vortex (MPOV) beams via electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) in a hot vapor cell. In particular, we study the role that phase gradients and phase singularities play in reducing the blurring of the retrieved images due to atomic diffusion. Three kinds of manifestations are enumerated to demonstrate such effect. Firstly, the suppression of the ring width broadening is more prominent for POVs with larger orbital angular momentum (OAM). Secondly, the retrieved double-ring MPOV beams' profiles present regular dark singularity distributions that are related to their vortex charge difference. Thirdly, the storage fidelities of the triple-ring MPOVs are substantially improved by designing line phase singularities between multi-ring MPOVs with the same OAM number but $π$ offset phases between adjacent rings. Our experimental demonstration of MPOV storage opens new opportunities for increasing data capacity in quantum memories by spatial multiplexing, as well as the generation and manipulation of complex optical vortex arrays.

Towards efficient quantum memory of orbital angular momentum qubits in cold atoms

The spatial modes of light, carrying a quantized amount of orbital angular momentum (OAM), is one of the excellent candidates that provides access to high-dimensional quantum states, which essentially makes it promising towards building high-dimensional quantum networks. In this paper, we report the storage and retrieval of photonic qubits encoded with OAM state in the cold atomic ensemble, achieving an average conditional fidelity above 98% and retrieval efficiency around 65%. The photonic OAM qubits are encoded with weak coherent states at the single-photon level and the memory is based on electromagnetically induced transparency in an elongated cold rubidium atomic ensemble. Our work constitutes an efficient node that is needed towards high dimensional and large scale quantum networks.

Identifying the orbital angular momentum of light based on atomic ensembles

We propose a scheme to distinguish the orbital angular momentum state of the Laguerre-Gaussian (LG) beam based on the electromagnetically induced transparency modulated by a microwave field in atomic ensembles. We show that the transverse phase variation of a probe beam with the LG mode can be mapped into the spatial intensity distribution due to the change of atomic coherence caused by the microwave. The proposal may provide a useful tool for studying higher-dimensional quantum information based on atomic ensembles.

Spin polarization separation of reflected light at Brewster angle

A novel spin polarization separation of reflected light is observed, when a linearly polarized Gaussian beam impinges on an air-glass interface at Brewster angle. In the far-field zone, spins of photons are oppositely polarized in two regions along the direction perpendicular to incident plane. Spatial scale of this polarization is related to optical properties of dielectric and can be controlled by experimental configuration. We believe that this study benefits the manipulation of spins of photons and the development of methods for investigating optical properties of materials.
