Safety-Regulated Transfer Reinforcement Learning with Adaptive Teacher Guidance

We propose Safety-Regulated Adaptive Transfer Reinforcement Learning (SRATRL), a teacher--student framework that combines safety-triggered intervention, safety-adaptive value shaping, and policy-compatibility-based optimization for efficient target-domain adaptation. First, a safety-triggered closed-loop intervention strategy is developed that activates teacher guidance according to the instantaneous safety cost and adaptively adjusts the intervention threshold based on the student policy's recent safety performance, thereby providing timely safety supervision while progressively restoring student autonomy as its safety improves. Next, a safety-adaptive teacher-guided value-shaping scheme is introduced, in which a teacher-consistency signal is incorporated into the critic target, and its contribution is dynamically regulated by the safety-constraint multiplier, enabling stronger teacher guidance under elevated safety risks and gradually weakening such guidance as the safety constraint is better satisfied. In addition, a teacher-student policy-compatibility weighting approach is proposed to alleviate the adverse optimization effects caused by policy mismatch. It reweights teacher-intervened transitions according to the relative likelihood of the executed action under the teacher and student policies, thereby improving policy-update stability. Experimental results demonstrate that compared with a Proximal Policy Optimization with Lagrangian constraint baseline, the proposed method improves the average velocity by 6.90%, and reduces the crash ratio by 75.00%. These results demonstrate that the proposed method can reduce safety costs while maintaining competitive task efficiency.

Photon-pair generation in a heterogeneous silicon photonic chip

Integrated Silicon photonics has played an important role in advancing the applications of quantum information and quantum science. However, due to different material properties, it is challenging to integrate all components with excellent performance based on homogeneous material. Here, by combining high nonlinearity and low losses in a heterogeneous silicon platform, we efficiently generate high-quality photon pairs through spontaneous four-wave mixing in hydrogenated amorphous silicon waveguide and route them off-chip through low loss silicon nitride waveguide. A record high coincidence- to- accidental rate value of 1632.6 ($\pm$ 260.4) is achieved in this heterogeneous design with a photon pair generation rate of 1.94 MHz. We also showcase a wide range of multi-channel photon sources with coincidence- to- accidental rate consistently at 200. Lastly, we measure heralded single-photons with a lowest $g^{(2)}_H(0)$ of 0.1085 $\pm$ 0.0014. Our results demonstrate the heterogeneous silicon platform as an ideal platform for efficient generation of photon pairs and routing them off-chip with low losses. It also paves a way for the future hybrid photonic integrated circuit by collecting distinct features from different materials.

Efficient Frequency Doubling with Active Stabilization on Chip

Thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) is superior for integrated nanophotonics due to its outstanding properties in nearly all aspects: strong second-order nonlinearity, fast and efficient electro-optic effects, wide transparency window, and little two photon absorption and free carrier scattering. Together, they permit highly integrated nanophotonic circuits capable of complex photonic processing by incorporating disparate elements on the same chip. Yet, there has to be a demonstration that synergizes those superior properties for system advantage. Here we demonstrate such a chip that capitalizes on TFLNs favorable ferroelectricity, high second-order nonlinearity, and strong electro-optic effects. It consists of a monolithic circuit integrating a Z-cut, quasi-phase matched microring with high quality factor and a phase modulator used in active feedback control. By Pound-Drever-Hall locking, it realizes stable frequency doubling at about 50% conversion with only milliwatt pump, marking the highest by far among all nanophotonic platforms with milliwatt pumping. Our demonstration addresses a long-outstanding challenge facing cavity-based optical processing, including frequency conversion, frequency comb generation, and all-optical switching, whose stable performance is hindered by photorefractive or thermal effects. Our results further establish TFLN as an excellent material capable of optical multitasking, as desirable to build multi-functional chip devices.

Efficient Reservoir Computing using Field Programmable Gate Array and Electro-optic Modulation

We experimentally demonstrate a hybrid reservoir computing system consisting of an electro-optic modulator and field programmable gate array (FPGA). It implements delay lines and filters digitally for flexible dynamics and high connectivity, while supporting a large number of reservoir nodes. To evaluate the system's performance and versatility, three benchmark tests are performed. The first is the 10th order Nonlinear Auto-Regressive Moving Average test (NARMA-10), where the predictions of 1000 and 25,000 steps yield impressively low normalized root mean square errors (NRMSE's) of 0.142 and 0.148, respectively. Such accurate predictions over into the far future speak to its capability of large sample size processing, as enabled by the present hybrid design. The second is the Santa Fe laser data prediction, where a normalized mean square error (NMSE) of 6.73x10-3 is demonstrated. The third is the isolate spoken digit recognition, with a word error rate close to 0.34%. Accurate, versatile, flexibly reconfigurable, and capable of long-term prediction, this reservoir computing system could find a wealth of impactful applications in real-time information processing, weather forecasting, and financial analysis.
