The low-energy Goldstone mode in a trapped dipolar supersolid

A supersolid is a counter-intuitive state of matter that combines the frictionless flow of a superfluid with the crystal-like periodic density modulation of a solid. Since the first prediction in the 1950s, experimental efforts to realize this state have focussed mainly on Helium, where supersolidity remains elusive. Recently, supersolidity has also been studied intensively in ultracold quantum gases, and some of its defining properties have been induced in spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) and BECs coupled to two crossed optical cavities. However, the periodicity of the crystals in both systems is fixed to the wavelength of the applied periodic optical potentials. Recently, hallmark properties of a supersolid -- the periodic density modulation and simultaneous global phase coherence -- have been observed in arrays of dipolar quantum droplets, where the crystallization happens in a self-organized manner due to intrinsic interactions. In this letter, we prove the genuine supersolid nature of these droplet arrays by directly observing the low-energy Goldstone mode. The dynamics of this mode is reminiscent of the effect of second sound in other superfluid systems and features an out-ofphase oscillation of the crystal array and the superfluid density. This mode exists only due to the phase rigidity of the experimentally realized state, and therefore confirms the genuine superfluidity of the supersolid.

Transient supersolid properties in an array of dipolar quantum droplets

We study theoretically and experimentally the emergence of supersolid properties in a dipolar Bose-Einstein condensate. The theory reveals a ground state phase diagram with three distinct regimes - a regular Bose-Einstein condensate, incoherent and coherent arrays of quantum droplets. In the latter the droplets are connected by a finite superfluid density, which leads - in addition to the periodic density modulation - to a robust phase coherence throughout the whole system. We further theoretically demonstrate that we are able to dynamically approach the ground state in our experiment and that its lifetime is only limited by three-body losses. Experimentally we probe and confirm the signatures of the phase diagram by observing the in-situ density modulation as well as the phase coherence using matter wave interference.

Dipolar Collisions of Ultracold Ground-state Bosonic Molecules

The dipolar collision between ultracold polar molecules is an important topic both by its own right from the fundamental point of view and for the successful exploration of many-body physics with strong and long-range dipolar interactions. Here, we report the investigation of collisions between ultracold ground-state sodium-rubidium molecules in electric fields with induced electric dipole moments as large as 0.7$\;$D. We observe a step-wise enhancement of losses due to the coupling between different partial waves induced by the increasingly stronger anisotropic dipolar interactions. Varying the temperature of our sample, we find good agreement with theoretical loss rates assuming complex formation as the main loss process. Our results shed new light on the understanding of complex molecular collisions in the presence of strong dipolar interactions and also demonstrate the versatility of modifying molecular interactions with electric fields.

Collisions of ultracold ^{23}Na^{87}Rb molecules with controlled chemical reactivities

The collision of molecules at ultracold temperatures is of great importance for understanding the chemical interactions at the quantum regime. While much theoretical work has been devoted to this, experimental data are only available sparsely mainly due to the difficulty in producing ground-state molecules at ultracold temperatures. We report here the creation of optically trapped samples of ground-state bosonic sodium-rubidium molecules with precisely controlled internal states and, enabled by this, a detailed study on the inelastic loss with and without the NaRb + NaRb $\rightarrow$ Na$_2$ + Rb$_2$ chemical reaction. Contrary to intuitive expectations, we observed very similar loss and heating, regardless of the chemical reactivities. In addition, as evidenced by the reducing loss rate constants with increasing temperatures, we found that these collisions are already outside the Wigner region even though the sample temperatures are sub-microkelvin. Our measurement agrees semi-quantitatively with models based on long-range interactions, but calls for a deeper understanding on the short-range physics for a more complete interpretation.

High-resolution Internal State Control of Ultracold $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb Molecules

We report the full control over the internal states of ultracold $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb molecules, including vibrational, rotational and hyperfine degrees of freedom. Starting from a sample of weakly bound Feshbach molecules, we realize the creation of molecules in single hyperfine levels of both the rovibrational ground and excited states with a high-efficiency and high-resolution stimulated Raman adiabatic passage. Starting from the rovibrational and hyperfine ground state, we demonstrate rotational and hyperfine control with one- and two-photon microwave spectroscopy. This achievement of fully controlling the molecular internal states paves the way to study state dependent molecular collisions and state controlled chemical reactions.

High Resolution Molecular Spectroscopy for Producing Ultracold Absolute Ground-State $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb Molecules

We report a detailed molecular spectroscopy study on the lowest excited electronic states of $^{23}\rm{Na}^{87}\rm{Rb}$ for producing ultracold $^{23}\rm{Na}^{87}\rm{Rb}$ molecules in the electronic, rovibrational and hyperfine ground state. Starting from weakly-bound Feshbach molecules, a series of vibrational levels of the $A^{1}Σ^{+}-b^{3}Π$ coupled excited states were investigated. After resolving, modeling and interpreting the hyperfine structure of several lines, we successfully identified a long-lived level resulting from the accidental hyperfine coupling between the $0^+$ and $0^-$ components of the $b^3Π$ state, satisfying all the requirements for the population transfer toward the lowest rovibrational level of the X$^1Σ^+$ state. Using two-photon spectroscopy, its binding energy was measured to be 4977.308(3) cm$^{-1}$, the most precise value to date. We calibrated all the transition strengths carefully and also demonstrated Raman transfer of Feshbach molecules to the absolute ground state.

Creation of an ultracold gas of ground-state $^{23}\rm{Na}^{87}\rm{Rb}$ molecules

We report the successful production of an ultracold sample of absolute ground-state $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb molecules. Starting from weakly-bound Feshbach molecules formed via magneto-association, the lowest rovibrational and hyperfine level of the electronic ground state is populated following a high efficiency and high resolution two-photon Raman process. The high purity absolute ground-state samples have up to 8000 molecules and densities of over $10^{11}$ cm$^{-3}$. By measuring the Stark shifts induced by external electric fields, we determined the permanent electric dipole moment of the absolute ground-state $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb and demonstrated the capability of inducing an effective dipole moment over one Debye. Bimolecular reaction between ground-state $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb molecules is endothermic, but we still observed a rather fast decay of the molecular sample. Our results pave the way toward investigation of ultracold molecular collisions in a fully controlled manner, and possibly to quantum gases of ultracold bosonic molecules with strong dipolar interactions.

Long-range states of the NaRb molecule near the Na($3^2S_{1/2}$)+Rb($5^2P_{3/2}$) asymptote

We report a high-resolution spectroscopic investigation of the long-range states of the $^{23}$Na$^{87}$Rb molecule near its Na($3^2S_{1/2}$)+Rb($5^2P_{3/2}$) asymptote. This study was performed with weakly bound ultracold molecules produced via magneto-association with an inter-species Feshbach resonance. We observed several regular vibrational series, which are assigned to the 5 attractive long-range states correlated with this asymptote. The vibrational levels of two of these states have sharp but complex structures due to hyperfine and Zeeman interactions. For the other states, we observed significant linewidth broadenings due to strong predissociation caused by spin-orbit couplings with states correlated to the lower Na($3^2S_{1/2}$)+Rb($5^2P_{1/2}$) asymptote. The long-range $C_6$ van der Waals coefficients extracted from our spectrum are in good agreement with theoretical values.

Coherent heteronuclear spin dynamics in an ultracold spin-1 mixture

We report the observation of coherent heteronuclear spin dynamics driven by inter-species spin-spin interaction in an ultracold spinor mixture, which manifests as periodical and well correlated spin oscillations between two atomic species. In particular, we investigate the magnetic field dependence of the oscillations and find a resonance behavior which depends on {\em both} the linear and quadratic Zeeman effects and the spin-dependent interaction. We also demonstrate a unique knob for controlling the spin dynamics in the spinor mixture with species-dependent vector light shifts. Our finds are in agreement with theoretical simulations without any fitting parameters.
