Critical Topological Photonics in Synthetic Dimensions

Topological states and criticality have long been regarded as incompatible ingredients: the former requires a finite spectral gap, whereas the latter demands its closure. Guided by this view, topological photonics has focused almost exclusively on gapped phases, treating gap-closing transitions as mere phase boundaries. In this work, we propose a class of topological states in which topology coexists with criticality in experimentally accessible synthetic-frequency photonic platforms. In a one-dimensional (1D) synthetic lattice, we identify such critical topological photonic states through midgap degeneracies in the single-particle entanglement spectrum, and uncover a topology-enforced multicritical point that reorganizes the topology of neighboring critical states. We further extend this framework to two dimensions (2D). Our work provides an experimentally accessible route to critical topological photonics, and may also inspire novel applications such as critical topological sensing.

Mode Conversion of Hyperbolic Phonon Polaritons in van der Waals terraces

Electromagnetic hyperbolicity has driven key functionalities in nanophotonics, including super-resolution imaging, efficient energy control, and extreme light manipulation. Central to these advances are hyperbolic polaritons - nanometer-scale light-matter waves - spanning multiple energy-momentum dispersion orders with distinct mode profiles and incrementally high optical momenta. In this work, we report the mode conversion of hyperbolic polaritons across different dispersion orders by breaking the structure symmetry in engineered step-shape van der Waals (vdW) terraces. The mode conversion from the fundamental to high-order hyperbolic polaritons is imaged using scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) on both hexagonal boron nitride (hBN) and alpha-phase molybdenum trioxide (alpha-MoO3) vdW terraces. Our s-SNOM data, augmented with electromagnetic simulations, further demonstrate the alteration of polariton mode conversion by varying the step size of vdW terraces. The mode conversion reported here offers a practical approach toward integrating previously independent different-order hyperbolic polaritons with ultra-high momenta, paving the way for promising applications in nano-optical circuits, sensing, computation, information processing, and super-resolution imaging.

Every Angle Is Worth A Second Glance: Mining Kinematic Skeletal Structures from Multi-view Joint Cloud

Multi-person motion capture over sparse angular observations is a challenging problem under interference from both self- and mutual-occlusions. Existing works produce accurate 2D joint detection, however, when these are triangulated and lifted into 3D, available solutions all struggle in selecting the most accurate candidates and associating them to the correct joint type and target identity. As such, in order to fully utilize all accurate 2D joint location information, we propose to independently triangulate between all same-typed 2D joints from all camera views regardless of their target ID, forming the Joint Cloud. Joint Cloud consist of both valid joints lifted from the same joint type and target ID, as well as falsely constructed ones that are from different 2D sources. These redundant and inaccurate candidates are processed over the proposed Joint Cloud Selection and Aggregation Transformer (JCSAT) involving three cascaded encoders which deeply explore the trajectile, skeletal structural, and view-dependent correlations among all 3D point candidates in the cross-embedding space. An Optimal Token Attention Path (OTAP) module is proposed which subsequently selects and aggregates informative features from these redundant observations for the final prediction of human motion. To demonstrate the effectiveness of JCSAT, we build and publish a new multi-person motion capture dataset BUMocap-X with complex interactions and severe occlusions. Comprehensive experiments over the newly presented as well as benchmark datasets validate the effectiveness of the proposed framework, which outperforms all existing state-of-the-art methods, especially under challenging occlusion scenarios.

Quantum Cross Nonlinearity for Photon-Number-Resolving Nondestructive Detection

We present an unconventional mechanism for quantum nonlinearity in a system comprising of a V-type quantum emitter (QE) and two Fabry-Perot cavities. The two transitions of the V-type QE are effectively coupled with two independent cavity modes. The system exhibits a strong quantum nonlinear control in the transmission even at the single-photon level, which we refer to as quantum cross nonlinearity. The underlying physics can be understood as quantum competition between the two transitions of the QE sharing a common ground state. By leveraging this quantum cross nonlinearity, we further show photon-number-resolving quantum nondestructive detection. Owing to the widespread nature of this V-type configuration, our approach can be readily extended to diverse cavity quantum electrodynamic systems beyond the realm of optics, encompassing, e.g., microwave photons and acoustic wave phonons. This versatility may facilitate numerous unique applications for quantum information processing.

High-Dimensional Two-Photon Quantum Controlled Phase-Flip Gate

High-dimensional quantum systems have been used to reveal interesting fundamental physics and to improve information capacity and noise resilience in quantum information processing. However, it remains a significant challenge to realize universal two-photon quantum gates in high dimensions with high success probability. Here, by considering an ion-cavity QED system, we theoretically propose, to the best of our knowledge, the first high-dimensional, deterministic and universal two-photon quantum gate. By using an optical cavity embedded with a single trapped 40Ca+ ion, we achieve a high average fidelity larger than 98% for a quantum controlled phase-flip gate in four-dimensional space, spanned by photonic spin angular momenta and orbital angular momenta. Our proposed system can be an essential building block for high-dimensional quantum information processing, and also provides a platform for studying high-dimensional cavity QED.

Photonic indistinguishability characterization and optimization for cavity-based single-photon source

Indistinguishability of single photons from independent sources is critically important for scalable quantum technologies. We provide a comprehensive comparison of single-photon indistinguishability of different kinds of cavity quantum electrodynamics (CQED) systems by numerically simulating Hong-Ou-Mandel (HOM) two-photon interference. We find that the CQED system using nature atoms exhibit superiority in indistinguishability, benefiting from the inherently identical features. Moreover, a $Λ-$type three-level atoms show essential robust against variation of various system parameters because it exploits the two ground states with considerable smaller decay rates for single-photon generation. Furthermore, a machine learning-based framework is proposed to significantly and robustly improve single-photon indistinguishability for non-identical two CQED systems. This work may pave the way for designing and engineering reliable and scalable photon-based quantum technologies.

A passive bias-free ultrabroadband optical isolator based on unidirectional self-induced transparency

Achieving a broadband nonreciprocal device without gain and any external bias is very challenging and highly desirable for modern photonic technologies and quantum networks. Here, we theoretically propose a passive and bias-free all-optical isolator for a femtosecond laser pulse by exploiting a new mechanism of unidirectional self-induced transparency, obtained with a nonlinear medium followed by a normal absorbing medium at one side. The transmission contrast between the forward and backward directions can reach ~14.3 dB for a 2π5 fs laser pulse, implying isolation of a signal with an ultrabroad bandwidth of 200 THz. The 20 dB bandwidth is about 57 nm, already comparable with a magneto-optical isolator. This cavity-free optical isolator may pave the way to integrated nonmagnetic isolation of ultrashort laser pulses.

Tailor Versatile Multi-modal Learning for Multi-label Emotion Recognition

Multi-modal Multi-label Emotion Recognition (MMER) aims to identify various human emotions from heterogeneous visual, audio and text modalities. Previous methods mainly focus on projecting multiple modalities into a common latent space and learning an identical representation for all labels, which neglects the diversity of each modality and fails to capture richer semantic information for each label from different perspectives. Besides, associated relationships of modalities and labels have not been fully exploited. In this paper, we propose versaTile multi-modAl learning for multI-labeL emOtion Recognition (TAILOR), aiming to refine multi-modal representations and enhance discriminative capacity of each label. Specifically, we design an adversarial multi-modal refinement module to sufficiently explore the commonality among different modalities and strengthen the diversity of each modality. To further exploit label-modal dependence, we devise a BERT-like cross-modal encoder to gradually fuse private and common modality representations in a granularity descent way, as well as a label-guided decoder to adaptively generate a tailored representation for each label with the guidance of label semantics. In addition, we conduct experiments on the benchmark MMER dataset CMU-MOSEI in both aligned and unaligned settings, which demonstrate the superiority of TAILOR over the state-of-the-arts. Code is available at https://github.com/kniter1/TAILOR.

A perspective of twisted photonic structures

Moire superlattices-twisted van der Waals (vdW) structures with small angles-are attracting increasing attention in condensed matter physics, due to important phenomena revealed therein, including unconventional superconductivity, correlated insulating states, and ferromagnetism. Moire superlattices are typically comprised of atomic layers of vdW materials where the exotic physics arises from the quantum electronic coupling between adjacent atomic layers. Recently, moire electronics has motivated their photonic counterparts. In addition to vdW materials, twisted photonic systems can also be comprised of metamaterials, metasurfaces, and photonic crystals, mediated by interlayer electromagnetic coupling instead. The interplay between short-ranged interlayer quantum and long-ranged electromagnetic coupling in twisted structures are expected to yield rich phenomena in nano-optics. This perspective reviews recent progress in twisted structures for nanophotonics and outlooks emerging topics, opportunities, fundamental challenges, and potential applications.

Nonreciprocal single-photon band structure

We study single-photon band structure in a one-dimensional (1D) coupled-resonator optical waveguide (CROW) which chirally couples to an array of two-level quantum emitters (QEs). The chiral interaction between the resonator mode and the QE can break the time-reversal symmetry without the magneto-optical effect. As a result, a nonreciprocal single-photon edge state, band gap and flat band appear. By using such a chiral QE-CROW system, including a finite number of unit cells and working in the nonreciprocal band gap, we achieve frequency-multiplex single-photon circulators with high fidelity and low insertion loss. The chiral QE-light interaction can also protect one-way propagation of single photons against backscattering. Our work opens a new door for studying nonreciprocal photonic band structure and exploring its applications in the quantum regime.

Quantum Squeezing Induced Optical Nonreciprocity

We propose an all-optical approach to achieve optical nonreciprocity on a chip by quantum squeezing one of two coupled resonator modes. By parametric pumping a nonlinear resonator unidirectionally with a classical coherent field, we squeeze the resonator mode in a selective direction due to the phase-matching condition, and induce a chiral photon interaction between two resonators. Based on this chiral interresonator coupling, we achieve an all-optical diode and a three-port quasi-circulator. By applying a second squeezed-vacuum field to the squeezed resonator mode, our nonreciprocal device also works for single-photon pulses. We obtain an isolation ratio of >40 dB for the diode and fidelity of $>98\%$ for the quasi-circulator, and insertion loss of <1 dB for both. We also show that nonreciprocal transmission of strong light can be switched on and off by a relative weak pump light. This achievement implies a nonreciprocal optical transistor. Our protocol opens up a new route to achieve integrable all-optical nonreciprocal devices permitting chip-compatible optical isolation and nonreciporcal quantum information processing.
