Ghost instability in the teleparallel gravity model with parity violations

In this paper we consider the parity violating gravity model within the framework of teleparallel gravity. The parity violations are caused by the couplings of a scalar field to the scalar invariants which are parity-odd and quadratic in the torsion tensor. Totally there are two such type independent invariants, and one of them is the Nieh-Yan density. Through investigations on the cosmological perturbations of this model, we find that in general it suffers from the difficulties of ghost instability in the scalar and vector perturbations. But in the special case only the coupling to the Nieh-Yan density exists, this model is ghost free and reduces to the Nieh-Yan modified Teleparallel Gravity model. We also analyze the severity of the ghost instability by studying the perturbations around the Minkowski background.

Target-aware Abstractive Related Work Generation with Contrastive Learning

The related work section is an important component of a scientific paper, which highlights the contribution of the target paper in the context of the reference papers. Authors can save their time and effort by using the automatically generated related work section as a draft to complete the final related work. Most of the existing related work section generation methods rely on extracting off-the-shelf sentences to make a comparative discussion about the target work and the reference papers. However, such sentences need to be written in advance and are hard to obtain in practice. Hence, in this paper, we propose an abstractive target-aware related work generator (TAG), which can generate related work sections consisting of new sentences. Concretely, we first propose a target-aware graph encoder, which models the relationships between reference papers and the target paper with target-centered attention mechanisms. In the decoding process, we propose a hierarchical decoder that attends to the nodes of different levels in the graph with keyphrases as semantic indicators. Finally, to generate a more informative related work, we propose multi-level contrastive optimization objectives, which aim to maximize the mutual information between the generated related work with the references and minimize that with non-references. Extensive experiments on two public scholar datasets show that the proposed model brings substantial improvements over several strong baselines in terms of automatic and tailored human evaluations.

Possible consistent model of parity violations in the symmetric teleparallel gravity

Many parity violating gravity models suffer from the ghost instability problem. In this paper, we consider a symmetric teleparallel gravity model that extends the general relativity equivalent model by several parity violating interactions between the gravitational field and a scalar field. These interactions exclude higher derivatives and are quadratic in the nonmetricity tensor. Through investigations on the linear cosmological perturbations, our results show that, in general, this model suffers from the difficulty caused by the existence of ghost mode in the vector perturbations. However, in cases where a special condition is imposed on the coefficients of these parity violating interactions, this model can be ghost free.

A simple parity violating model in the symmetric teleparallel gravity and its cosmological perturbations

The parity violating gravity models based on the symmetric teleparallel gravity have been considered in the literature, but their applications in cosmology and especially the modifications to cosmological perturbations have not been fully explored. In this paper we consider such a simple model which modifies general relativity by a parity non-conserved coupling, within the framework of the symmetric teleparallel gravity. We study in detail its cosmological applications and focus on its cosmological perturbation theory. Besides the already known parity violation in the tensor perturbations, we find that the vector perturbations in this model are promoted to be dynamical degrees of freedom, and the left- and right-handed vector modes propagate with different velocities. More importantly, we find that one of the vector modes is a ghost at high momentum scales, which will give rise to the problem of vacuum instability in the quantum theory of cosmological perturbations.

Revisiting a parity violating gravity model without ghost instability: Local Lorentz covariance

Recently, based on the theory of teleparallel gravity, a simple and ghost free parity violating gravity model was proposed in [M. Li, H. Rao, and D. Zhao, J. Cosmol. Astropart. Phys. 11 (2020) 023], where the Weitzenböck connection was adopted for simplifying the calculations but breaks the local Lorentz symmetry explicitly. In this paper, we restore the local Lorentz symmetry of this model by giving up the Weitzenböck condition on the spin connection. With full local Lorentz covariance, this model is not a pure tetrad theory any more. We also apply the new version of this model to the universe with general Friedmann-Robertson-Walker background. This further generalizes the studies of [M. Li, H. Rao, and D. Zhao, J. Cosmol. Astropart. Phys. 11 (2020) 023] where only the spatially flat background was considered. Through the investigations of this paper, we confirm the results obtained in [M. Li, H. Rao, and D. Zhao, J. Cosmol. Astropart. Phys. 11 (2020) 023] and in addition get some new results.

Gravitational leptogenesis in teleparallel and symmetric teleparallel gravities

In this paper, we consider the possibilities of generating baryon number asymmetry in thermal equilibrium within the frameworks of teleparallel and symmetric teleparallel gravities. Through the derivative couplings of the torsion scalar or the non-metricity scalar to baryons, the baryon number asymmetry is indeed produced in the radiation dominated epoch. For gravitational baryogenesis mechanisms in these two frameworks, the produced baryon-to-entropy ratio is too small to be consistent with observations. But the gravitational leptogenesis models within both frameworks have the possibilities to interpret the observed baryon-antibaryon asymmetry.

Sketching Merge Trees for Scientific Data Visualization

Merge trees are a type of topological descriptors that record the connectivity among the sublevel sets of scalar fields. They are among the most widely used topological tools in visualization. In this paper, we are interested in sketching a set of merge trees. That is, given a large set T of merge trees, we would like to find a much smaller basis set S such that each tree in T can be approximately reconstructed from a linear combination of merge trees in S. A set of high-dimensional vectors can be sketched via matrix sketching techniques such as principal component analysis and column subset selection. However, up until now, topological descriptors such as merge trees have not been known to be sketchable. We develop a framework for sketching a set of merge trees that combines the Gromov-Wasserstein probabilistic matching with techniques from matrix sketching. We demonstrate the applications of our framework in sketching merge trees that arise from time-varying scientific simulations. Specifically, our framework obtains a much smaller representation of a large set of merge trees for downstream analysis and visualization. It is shown to be useful in identifying good representatives and outliers with respect to a chosen basis. Finally, our work shows a promising direction of utilizing randomized linear algebra within scientific visualization.

The design of the Ali CMB Polarization Telescope receiver

Ali CMB Polarization Telescope (AliCPT-1) is the first CMB degree-scale polarimeter to be deployed on the Tibetan plateau at 5,250m above sea level. AliCPT-1 is a 90/150 GHz 72 cm aperture, two-lens refracting telescope cooled down to 4 K. Alumina lenses, 800mm in diameter, image the CMB in a 33.4° field of view on a 636mm wide focal plane. The modularized focal plane consists of dichroic polarization-sensitive Transition-Edge Sensors (TESes). Each module includes 1,704 optically active TESes fabricated on a 150mm diameter silicon wafer. Each TES array is read out with a microwave multiplexing readout system capable of a multiplexing factor up to 2,048. Such a large multiplexing factor has allowed the practical deployment of tens of thousands of detectors, enabling the design of a receiver that can operate up to 19 TES arrays for a total of 32,376 TESes. AliCPT-1 leverages the technological advancements in the detector design from multiple generations of previously successful feedhorn-coupled polarimeters, and in the instrument design from BICEP-3, but applied on a larger scale. The cryostat receiver is currently under integration and testing. During the first deployment year, the focal plane will be populated with up to 4 TES arrays. Further TES arrays will be deployed in the following years, fully populating the focal plane with 19 arrays on the fourth deployment year. Here we present the AliCPT-1 receiver design, and how the design has been optimized to meet the experimental requirements.

The Style-Content Duality of Attractiveness: Learning to Write Eye-Catching Headlines via Disentanglement

Eye-catching headlines function as the first device to trigger more clicks, bringing reciprocal effect between producers and viewers. Producers can obtain more traffic and profits, and readers can have access to outstanding articles. When generating attractive headlines, it is important to not only capture the attractive content but also follow an eye-catching written style. In this paper, we propose a Disentanglement-based Attractive Headline Generator (DAHG) that generates headline which captures the attractive content following the attractive style. Concretely, we first devise a disentanglement module to divide the style and content of an attractive prototype headline into latent spaces, with two auxiliary constraints to ensure the two spaces are indeed disentangled. The latent content information is then used to further polish the document representation and help capture the salient part. Finally, the generator takes the polished document as input to generate headline under the guidance of the attractive style. Extensive experiments on the public Kuaibao dataset show that DAHG achieves state-of-the-art performance. Human evaluation also demonstrates that DAHG triggers 22% more clicks than existing models.

VMSMO: Learning to Generate Multimodal Summary for Video-based News Articles

A popular multimedia news format nowadays is providing users with a lively video and a corresponding news article, which is employed by influential news media including CNN, BBC, and social media including Twitter and Weibo. In such a case, automatically choosing a proper cover frame of the video and generating an appropriate textual summary of the article can help editors save time, and readers make the decision more effectively. Hence, in this paper, we propose the task of Video-based Multimodal Summarization with Multimodal Output (VMSMO) to tackle such a problem. The main challenge in this task is to jointly model the temporal dependency of video with semantic meaning of article. To this end, we propose a Dual-Interaction-based Multimodal Summarizer (DIMS), consisting of a dual interaction module and multimodal generator. In the dual interaction module, we propose a conditional self-attention mechanism that captures local semantic information within video and a global-attention mechanism that handles the semantic relationship between news text and video from a high level. Extensive experiments conducted on a large-scale real-world VMSMO dataset show that DIMS achieves the state-of-the-art performance in terms of both automatic metrics and human evaluations.

A simple parity violating gravity model without ghost instability

In this paper we consider a parity violating gravity model without higher derivatives, thus ghost free. This model is constructed from the tetrad and its derivatives and coupled to a dynamical scalar field, like axion. It can be reduced from the Nieh-Yan term within the framework of teleparallel gravity. We apply this model to cosmology and investigate its consequences on cosmological perturbation theory. We find that the coupled dynamical scalar field lost its independent dynamics at the linear order and the parity violating term itself behaves like a viscosity. For gravitational waves, this model produces velocity difference between left- and right-handed polarizations, but generates no amplitude discrepancy.

Using GGNN to recommend log statement level

In software engineering, log statement is an important part because programmers can't access to users' program and they can only rely on log message to find the root of bugs. The mechanism of "log level" allows developers and users to specify the appropriate amount of logs to print during the execution of the software. And 26\% of the log statement modification is to modify the level. We tried to use ML method to predict the suitable level of log statement. The specific model is GGNN(gated graph neural network) and we have drawn lessons from Microsoft's research. In this work, we apply Graph Neural Networks to predict the usage of log statement level of some open source java projects from github. Given the good performance of GGNN in this task, we are confident that GGNN is an excellent choice for processing source code. We envision this model can play an important role in applying AI/ML technique for Software Development Life Cycle more broadly.

Two-field mimetic gravity revisited and Hamiltonian analysis

We revisit the two-field mimetic gravity model with shift symmetries recently proposed in the literature, especially the problems of degrees of freedom and stabilities. We first study the model at the linear cosmological perturbation level by quadratic Lagrangian and Hamiltonian formulations. We show that there are actually two (instead of one) scalar degrees of freedom in this model in addition to two tensor modes. We then push on the study to the full non-linear level in terms of the Hamiltonian analysis, and confirm our result from the linear perturbation theory. We also consider the case where the kinetic terms of the two mimetic scalar fields have opposite signs in the constraint equation. We point out that in this case the model always suffers from the ghost instability problem.

Joint constraint on primordial gravitational waves and polarization rotation angle with current CMB polarization data

Cosmological CPT violation will rotate the polarized direction of CMB photons, convert partial CMB E mode into B mode and vice versa. It will generate non-zero EB, TB spectra and change the EE, BB, TE spectra. This phenomenon gives us a way to detect the CPT-violation signature from CMB observations, and also provides a new mechanism to produce B mode polarization. In this paper, we perform a global analysis on tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ and polarization rotation angles based on current CMB datasets with both low $\ell$ (Planck, BICEP2/Keck Array) and high $\ell$ (POLARBEAR, SPTpol, ACTPol). Benefited from the high precision of CMB data, we obtain the isotropic rotation angle $\barα = -0.01^\circ \pm 0.37^\circ $ at 68% C.L., the variance of the anisotropic rotation angles $C^α(0)<0.0032\,\mathrm{rad}^2$, the scale invariant power spectrum $D^{αα}_{\ell \in [2, 350]}<4.71\times 10^{-5} \,\mathrm{rad}^2$ and $r<0.057$ at 95% C.L.. Our result shows that with the polarization rotation effect, the 95% upper limit on $r$ gets tightened by 17%.

Probing Primordial Gravitational Waves: Ali CMB Polarization Telescope

In this paper, we will give a general introduction to the project of Ali CMB Polarization Telescope (AliCPT), which is a Sino-US joint project led by the Institute of High Energy Physics (IHEP) and has involved many different institutes in China. It is the first ground-based Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) polarization experiment in China and an integral part of China's Gravitational Waves Program. The main scientific goal of AliCPT project is to probe the primordial gravitational waves (PGWs) originated from the very early Universe. The AliCPT project includes two stages. The first stage referred to as AliCPT-1, is to build a telescope in the Ali region of Tibet with an altitude of 5,250 meters. Once completed, it will be the worldwide highest ground-based CMB observatory and open a new window for probing PGWs in northern hemisphere. AliCPT-1 telescope is designed to have about 7,000 TES detectors at 90GHz and 150GHz. The second stage is to have a more sensitive telescope (AliCPT-2) with the number of detectors more than 20,000. Our simulations show that AliCPT will improve the current constraint on the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ by one order of magnitude with 3 years' observation. Besides the PGWs, the AliCPT will also enable a precise measurement on the CMB rotation angle and provide a precise test on the CPT symmetry. We show 3 years' observation will improve the current limit by two order of magnitude.

Conformal invariant cosmological perturbations via the covariant approach: multicomponent universe

In recent years there has been a lot of interest in discussing frame dependences/independences of the cosmological perturbations under the conformal transformations. This problem has previously been investigated in terms of the covariant approach for a single component universe, and it was found that the covariant approach is very powerful to pick out the perturbative variables which are both gauge and conformal invariant. In this work, we extend the covariant approach to a universe with multicomponent fluids. We find that similar results can be derived, as expected. In addition, some other interesting perturbations are also identified to be conformal invariant, such as entropy perturbation between two different components.

Direct couplings of mimetic dark matter and their cosmological effects

The original mimetic model was proposed to take the role of dark matter. In this paper we consider possible direct interactions of the mimetic dark matter with other matter in the universe, especially the standard model particles such as baryons and photons. By imposing shift symmetry, the mimetic dark matter field can only have derivative couplings. We discuss the possibilities of generating baryon number asymmetry and cosmic birefringence in the universe based on the derivative couplings of the mimetic dark matter to baryons and photons.

On (in)stabilities of perturbations in mimetic models with higher derivatives

Usually when applying the mimetic model to the early universe, higher derivative terms are needed to promote the mimetic field to be dynamical. However such models suffer from the ghost and/or the gradient instabilities and simple extensions cannot cure this pathology. We point out in this paper that it is possible to overcome this difficulty by considering the direct couplings of the higher derivatives of the mimetic field to the curvature of the spacetime.
