Infinitesimal Weak Rigidity, Formation Control of Three Agents, and Extension to 3-dimensional Space

In this paper, we introduce new concepts of weak rigidity matrix and infinitesimal weak rigidity for planar frameworks. The weak rigidity matrix is used to directly check if a framework is infinitesimally weakly rigid while previous work can check a weak rigidity of a framework indirectly. An infinitesimal weak rigidity framework can be uniquely determined up to a translation and a rotation (and a scaling also when the framework does not include any edge) by its inter-neighbor distances and angles. We apply the new concepts to a three-agent formation control problem with a gradient control law, and prove instability of the control system at any incorrect equilibrium point and convergence to a desired target formation. Also, we propose a modified Henneberg construction, which is a technique to generate minimally rigid (or weakly rigid) graphs. Finally, we extend the concept of the weak rigidity in R^2 to the concept in R^3.

Pointing consensus for rooted out-branching graphs

Given a network of multiple agents, the pointing consensus problem asks all agents to point toward a common target. This paper proposes a simple method to solve the pointing consensus problem in the plane. In our formulation, each agent does not know its own position, but has information about its own heading vector expressed in a common coordinate frame and some desired relative angles to the neighbors. By exchanging the heading vectors via a communication network described by a rooted out-branching graph and controlling the angle between the heading vectors, we show that all agents' heading vectors asymptotically point towards the same target for almost all initial conditions. Simulations are provided to validate the effectiveness of the proposed method.

Theory and Applications of Matrix-Weighted Consensus

This paper proposes the matrix-weighted consensus algorithm, which is a generalization of the consensus algorithm in the literature. Given a networked dynamical system where the interconnections between agents are weighted by nonnegative definite matrices instead of nonnegative scalars, consensus and clustering phenomena naturally exist. We examine algebraic and algebraic graph conditions for achieving a consensus, and provide an algorithm for finding all clusters of a given system. Finally, we illustrate two applications of the proposed consensus algorithm in clustered consensus and in bearing-based formation control.

Consensus under Misaligned Orientations

This paper presents a consensus algorithm under misaligned orientations, which is defined as (i) misalignment to global coordinate frame of local coordinate frames, (ii) biases in control direction or sensing direction, or (iii) misaligned virtual global coordinate frames. After providing a mathematical formulation, we provide some sufficient conditions for consensus or for divergence. Besides the stability analysis, we also conduct some analysis for convergence characteristics in terms of locations of eigenvalues. Through a number of numerical simulations, we would attempt to understand the behaviors of misaligned consensus dynamics.

Formation Control of Rigid Graphs with a Flex Node Addition

This paper examines stability properties of distance-based formation control when the underlying topology consists of a rigid graph and a flex node addition. It is shown that the desired equilibrium set is locally asymptotically stable but there exist undesired equilibria. Specifically, we further consider two cases where the rigid graph is a triangle in 2-D and a tetrahedral in 3-D, and prove that any undesired equilibrium point in these cases is unstable. Thus in these cases, the desired formations are almost globally asymptotically stable.

Distance-based Control of K4 Formation with Almost Global Convergence

In this paper, we propose a distance-based formation control strategy that can enable four mobile agents, which are modelled by a group of single-integrators, to achieve the desired formation shape specified by using six consistent inter-agent distances in a 2-dimensional space. The control law is closely related to a gradient-based control law formed from a potential function reflecting the error between the actual inter-agent distances and the desired inter-agent distances. There are already control strategies achieving the same objective in a distance-based control manner in the literature, but the results do not yet include a global as opposed to local stability analysis. We propose a control strategy modified from the existing gradient-based control law so that we can achieve almost global convergence to the desired formation shape, and the control law uses known properties for an associated formation shape control problem involving a four-agent tetrahedron formation in 3-dimensional space. Simulation results verifying our analysis are also presented.
